One of my fave wine bars in Queens. I love the chill atmosphere. Chad and his team always make sure to take care of me when I'm here. I love that the menu changes with the season and their wine selection is always on point. If you're not sure what to get, just ask! They have a new venison sausage with gruyer skillet that is the epitome of winter. It made me feel like I was in a French chalet apres-ski. My husband and I shared that with a charcuterie board and paired it with a bottle of red. They have a fantastic Happy Hour until 6pm with discounted apps, cocktails, and wine by the glass or bottle. We had been wanting to try this spot for a long time since a friend recommended it. When they won USA Today's readers' choice for best new restaurant, we finally committed. And unfortunately I was disappointed. We started with two apps: coq au vin wings and autumn salad. The wings were really just fine. The ranch was clutch in making sure the wings were a better texture/moister. The autumn salad was not worth getting. It was weirdly dry to a fault-not sure if there was a dressing on it? But the minimal ingredients of the salad were all pretty dry/plain together. Would've benefitted from maybe a nut and/or a cheese to liven it up. The Moroccan shrimp seemed like a good idea: nice portion and aesthetically pretty. But I'm not totally convinced they were completely cooked. They look like they'd have a bit of a crisp but they were much softer than I would expect for cooked shrimp. We wanted the squid ink pasta but this was out-fine. So we got the replacement pasta instead. This was the best meal of the night by far but still was pretty standard. The menu said it would come with calamari which it didn't, so not sure if that was because if was the alternative pasta? But I don't think we were told that. Service was a little lackluster. At least one thing was forgotten and they did admit that most of the staff is rather new. The layout itself isn't designed the best. The host stand is immediately inside the door and there is minimal space to wait for your table. The tables themselves are super close together and there wasn't much personality in the decor. I think ultimately this was the most confusing part- what the personality is supposed to be. The menu itself was a bit all over and didn't have any sort of cohesive theme. I think it was originally meant to be a wine bar, which I could gather, but the menu does not reflect this. All that said, they did win the readers' choice award. The bartender was very much a mixologist, providing recommendations to the other guests while also making friendly conversation the whole time (a rare find at any bar in NYC). We had read it was voted "Best New Restaurant" by USA Today, so we were excited to try it out. Heavy is the crown I think because everything here was... fine. We shared a few appetizers - Pasta Chips, Fried Mozzarella, and Sautéed Shrimp. The Fried Mozzarella was the winner - very good. The other two were fine little snacks. We then shared the Kale Salad and Spaghetti with Garlic & Oil. The salad was not well dressed and the kale had not been massaged - very rough. The spaghetti was okay. We had the creme brulee and a scoop of their strawberries and cream gelato. The gelato was good because it had a tanginess to it, but had a strange mouth feel. Creme brûlée was not bruleed enough in my opinion. The waiter was very eager to clear our plates when we were clearly still working on our appetizers, which is a pet peeve of mine. They even took away the pasta chips when there was still some in there. The restaurant was by no means packed, so I didn't understand why he wasn't just letting us enjoy our time. They did give us lots of water, which I always appreciate. The vibe was nice - not too loud, not too bright. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and it was the right amount of crowded. Overall this restaurant was fine - nothing blew me away that makes me want to come back, but if someone was in the area looking for drinks and bites I would recommend as an option. They were only serving the breakfast menu (it was a Sunday) so that was a disappointment. They also had a musician, who was actually not bad, but we went to be able to have a nice meal with my daughter who lives in Astoria. It was impossible to hear without yelling and the other tables were doing the same. For the food, my wife had the Brie Grilled cheese, which looked good but she said was barely warm/melted; my daughter had the chicken and waffles which she said was fine (her go to when not up to standard) and thought the waffles could have been frozen waffles and the chicken ok, but the syrup was outstanding; I had the sausage egg & cheese sandwich which was good and the aoli which I was nervous about was great. It came with potatoes and peppers which were good but had a ton of shaved cheese on top that detracted. It also came with a (very) lightly dressed salad which was just weird. We enjoyed our meal at this pleasantly appointed restaurant. There was a jazz band playing on a mid week evening, which was a nice surprise. Menu offers a variety of small and larger plates. We ordered from a prix-fixe menu. The highlight was the cheese plate, which had a nice assortment of cheeses and bread and a delicious, homemade jam. The shrimp fettuccine had plenty of pasta, but could've used a bit more shrimp. The gelato was quite tasty and provided a nice finale to our meal. We also ordered wine flights. Unfortunately, after three separate visits, I can confidently say: this is the worst food on the block. Let's start with the cocktails. They couldn't even get an Aperol Spritz right. It's basically bubbly orange juice for adults--how do you mess that up? The food? Bland, uninspired, and somehow managed to taste both overcooked and underseasoned. On my last visit, I found myself seriously considering asking for an apron just to see if I could do better. The service was fine, and the ambiance tries really hard--but at the end of the day, if the food and drinks are this bad, none of that matters. All I can say is "Tootles!" I won't be back. read more

I have to say, it's rare to see a business care so much for their patrons that they reach out to you to rectify a bad experience. I had the pleasure of returning to Tootles and French by request of Fabio. When we arrived we were treated so well, the hostess knew exactly who we were and was so accommodating. As for the food, we were delighted. This time we had the buratta, the tangerine salad, the crab pasta and the wild boar and mash. For dessert we had the strawberry sorbet. When we return we will certainly order the wild boar again. I think the care that management puts towards their patrons really sets Tootles and French apart. As for the ambiance, the restaurant seemed even nicer than the first time we came because the weather outside was nice so the opened it up. After I left my previous review, Vanessa from Tootles & French contacted me and invited me to give them another try. I went back with a friend tonight and I was very impressed! The service was very attentive like last time, and the meal was much better. We had the asparagus and the burrata appetizers. Both were refreshing on a hot day. The prosciutto was perfect. Even the cucumbers that came with the burrata were tasty. My friend and I both had the beef bolognese, which surprisingly hit the spot for a summer meal. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was perfectly spiced. We each had enough for leftovers, which our server boxed up for us. I had two glasses of moscato, which was delicious, and my friend had two cocktails that she really liked. So thank you, Vanessa and the rest of the staff at Tootles & French! I live around the corner and started coming here for the wine selection. I keep coming back because they have some real home run food items (love the coq au vin and bourgiugnon) and the staff is absolutely lovely. The place is well lit without being oppressively bright and I love to do the crossword puzzle there during brunch. I recently had occasion to host a dinner there and the team coordinated an amazing menu well within my budget. I was delighted by each course and the wine pairings were impeccable. Came in for a "solo" brunch after putting in a 12 mile walk to let off some steam and man was I so happy I did. Tony was my server and he greeted me warmly. Immediately offered me water and gave me a card to scan the menu. I decided I'd treat myself and indulge in something I try not to ordinarily. Enter: Tres Leches pancakes, which is on the shareable menu but since I was dining alone I'd have them all to myself. They were absolutely delicious and fluffy. A perfect balance of flavors paired with the sweet creamy tres leche and fresh fruit. Not overly sweet but sweet enough to quench your sweet tooth's desire. I washed it down with a "Sun Shower" which is just as refreshing as the name suggests. The drink consists of a 5-Year aged madeira, grapefruit and ginger beer. I couldn't finish it because the pancakes filled me up. Overall amazing service, delicious food and tasty drinks. Would definitely recommend you hop on over and give them a try.
