There is nothing more American than a good hamburger and hot dog, served with in-house made potato chips and a Coke or a beer by friendly and welcoming, young ladies, who make you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door. And that is precisely what I discovered when I visited Top Dawgs Pub & Deli for the very first time this late afternoon for a late lunch and early dinner. This casual family-owned and operated American restaurant for over 12 years is located in the Roanoke/Botetourt County area and is known for its pub fare like hot dogs, burgers, and wings, with a large selection of craft beers and Coke products. When I arrived, I immediately noticed this family-oriented restaurant's community-focus. There were signs up of Family Meal Box, Taco Tuesday Family Pack, Karaoke Every Other Saturday, and Sunday Funday. There were couples, young and older dining there, as well as families. It's dog-themed decor was very unique, with dogs pictures all around the walls. It had seating areas with high tables and chairs, low tables and chairs, and chairs at the bar counter. The large screen high definition TVs were set at an appropriate distance so one could conveniently watch a game while dining there and having some beers. As soon as I entered, a young lady in the back asked me to seat at the table of my choice, and then she came down to bring me a menu and take my drink order. Even though they had an extensive selection of beers, since I was driving, I opted for an iced-cold Coke. To dine I started out with a Bam Bam Shrimp appetizer. The shrimps weren't Jumbo as described in the menu, but tasted delicious with the bam bam sauce. And to dine I ordered a Cowboy Burger that came with in-house made potato chips that were out-of-this-world and a Cheezy Dawg. The burger came in a fresh, soft bun and the patty was juicy and cooked to perfection, although the bacon inside was not crispy and I couldn't see the onion ring inside, it tasted good with the cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. The home-cut potato chips were just amazing. Best I've ever had. And the hot dog was an all beef quarter pound jumbo hot dog, split in the center and had chili, cheese, onions, and mustard, also in a fresh hot dog bun, and I added some ketchup as well. My server Tammie made sure to refill my drink without me having to mention it to her. For dessert I had their Fried Oreo Cookies and they tasted amazingly delicious. The best I've ever had. They were about 5 or 6 fresh Oreo cookies dipped in a light batter and fried mildly, then sprinkled with sweet powder sugar. They were so good and I was so full that I took 3 of them home with me to have as a snack later on. To pay, my server brought me a convenient little machine, where I paid with one of my credit cards, including my tip, Overall it was an extraordinary, relaxing dining experience and I highly recommend this restaurant when you want to have a truly enjoyable American meal. read more

We visited this restaurant for the first time on Feb 13th. We placed an order by phone and they told us 20 minutes. However, when we arrived they could not find out order. We found out after she took the order she said she didnt send it off to the cook. There was a time when a place that screwed up would comp the customer in some way. I have been going there years, especially for the wings. I went a week ago in the floors are sticky and the tables were disgusting. The waitresses were just talking to each other. They no longer have half priced wing night and charge for sauce. The wings were undercooked. One of them was raw. The top dawg sauce, which I used to rave about is now runny. The wings were not crispy because evidently the oil was not hot enough. The bathrooms were not much better. The trash can was overflowing. It comes with chips. The chips here are homemade, which is great, but they arent pub style chips, they're so thin, they won't hold up for the onion dip (onion dip is extra). Which is fine. The onion dip, for being homemade, isn't good by any standard. It was creamy, but no onion flavor. I thought I would like a side salad. And I was right! The side salad was very good. Ranch dressing makes everything taste good! It was served first, and built me up to expect at minimum a good sandwich. Darn! Oh well. I expected a pub type place. Here, there is no indication this is a pub. It's more of a strip mall diner, that has a bar. I am glad to have experienced it. Now I know where not to go. Maybe the hot dogs are good? I will find another place and take my chances there. My experience, if ya want a good side salad, this is the place. But I wouldn't bring my friends or family here for a sandwich or "dawg". Oh! Came because my realtor gifted me an item from here. The top dawg hot dog was pretty basic. The service was terrible! I don't know if it was bad because they were not staffed adequately considering there was a group who just up and left due to lack of acknowledgement or if they just are not organized and efficient at running the place or other reasons I would hope don't play a part but nevertheless I wouldn't recommend coming here. It is just a little cramped for space and the majority of the tables are high top. It isnt very toddler friendly but they did enjoy the kids menu items. I can no longer give this place praise. I was going here since shortly after it opened as Lucky Dog and recently lowered my Google rating from 5 to 3 stars (tonight reduced to 1). The quality/quantity of the food has diminished over the past year and the service is nowhere near where it used to be (likely due to regularly being understaffed) but tonight was close to being the worst dining experience I've ever had (and I've dined in countries where English isn't the primary language). First off, it was really slow though it wasn't very busy with two tables outside, two inside and there were two servers on the floor. There were nine of us and our drinks were taken almost immediately but there was a 15 minute wait before our food was even ordered. It was maybe 30-35 minutes until food started being brought out but I got to sit an additional five minutes for my 6 wings (you drop 'em in a fryer; how is there a delay on wings?), My steamed veggies came out another five minutes after that. As a result, I was still eating when my family was all done; not the most comfortable thing being watched while you eat. This is something I would normally let slide since we like the wait staff but the billing changed all of that. Bills came out and I saw our waitress left off one of my beers. We're regulars of hers and she's hooked me up in the past when things have been less than pleasurable so, thinking how terrible it'd been up to this point, i thought, "cool, she's compensating." Well, she takes my card and my parent's card (both Amazon cards) to run them. In the process, she mixes up our cards. Alright, that's fine, they look the same but I was curious on how she got the cards mixed up when they were in tow different trays. Turns out, she ran my card for the bill minus the one beer, negates that charge, modifies my bill (without informing me), mixes up the cards because she'd already ran my parents', charges on me for theirs, negates that charge, then charges me for the new price (again, without informing me that the price being charged was going to be different). That being said, I paid what I should have (well, she charged me for a side that was a little more expensive than the veggies) and I'm fine with that. I previously would've had no problems with the flubs and slow service but something isn't right with someone messing around with your credit card because they messed up and didn't charge you for something and then charge you a different amount without consulting you. We have now been three times in one month! So glad we found this place. Where to start...the Spinach Dip is fantastic and the pita point were so crispy and delicious. I have had a the hot dogs twice now, they are huge. The first time I got two and barely finished one...I learned my lesson the and only got one this last time (Cheezy Dawg) and it was perfect. The house made chips are so good and they have homemade ranch for dipping! I have also tried the Buffalo wrap and loved it...not too spicy but still had a kick and you can get any of their wing sauces with it. My husband has tried several different sammies and has loved each one! I am so glad we finally stopped and tried this restaurant. I am thankful this sports bar/restaurant can operate during Covid. They have the NFL ticket which is hard to find locally. The food is good and the servers are friendly. They have a really good number of Craft beers on tap. Some of the servers need better training and I hate to be nickle and dimed. For instance, the menu says the wings come with ranch or blue cheese but if you get one, they will try to charge you for it. They will also charge a higher price than the menu says and when questioned, they say that the menu needs to be updated. I have been here a dozen times or more and these are constants. The two stars is because the last time I went there it was 10 minutes before closing at 8pm on a Sunday. The place was full. I didn't see the small sign that had the hours. There were people that still hadn't gotten thier food the open light was on. We sat down then was told to leave that they were closed. As s business owner I would have been pissed if my employees did this it was before closing it was busy never turn a customer away. Then I get an FB message from them with store hours and no apologies. That being said it does have great food and usually great service. I just personally want be back. The service is adequate, the food is okay. The cook refuses to do something as simple as cutting my burger in half so I can box up the other half. I ordered a mushroom swiss black bean burger and received a lettuce and tomato one. I didn't send it back after his refusal to cut it. I was there this past weekend and had the same issue with the refusal to cut the burger. I had a staff member, I believe a manager, come tell me how that would not happen again, he was very apologetic and said he had spoken to the cook. I'm sorry to say that in less than a week I received the same (lack of) service. I will not be visiting the establishment again. I believe, as a customer, I am entitled to what I ask for. We moved here in August 2016 and discovered 1/2 price wing and microbrew night at top dawgs. Of course- it quickly became our favorite go to place. I hate to say it, but since then the quality of food and service has continued to decline for us. The mango chili wings are my favorite and used to be perfect, now when they come out there is barely any sauce and they're mostly dry. The next time I went I addressed that and just asked if they could put a little more sauce because it's gradually been less and less. My wings came out like dumplings in a sauce soup. They have ran out of wings the past 3 times we have went. The first time we were a large group and it was nearing the end of the night so it was understandable, and the next two times it was right around 5pm. The first night they ran out we placed our order and about 30 minutes later they came and told the table they were out of wings and asked if anyone wanted something else instead. A few of us did and waited about an hour. When the food came out a couple of us indeed got wings, some got the food we changed our orders to, and some of us never got any food at all! We love the environment and when they HAVE the food it is normally very very good. The servers are hit and miss, some are quick and friendly- others slow and forgetful. We will likely give them another chance since we enjoy it so much, but I do hope that their service doesn't continue to decrease or we will have to find a new favorite wing spot read more
