    Cider and beer
    Kimberly F.

We were seated almost as soon as we walked through the door. Our server was understanding about needing a table downstairs. We got our drinks quickly. The cherry cider had a tart flavor which went well with my food. We had Nachos as an appetizer. We tried a wrap, a U pick two- I chose a salad and Brussel sprouts, and a chicken sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. We enjoyed everything but the Nachos were very flavorful. The area to be seated downstairs is small and close to the bar. There is also additional seating upstairs.

I think it is a solid 4.5 place. Highly recommend this place if you are in Roanoke. 1. Service: top notch. Randy is the coolest guy, knowledgeable and nice. 2. Food: good. Love that you can have decent food on top of your drinks. 3. Drinks: excellent Bloody mary was great! and strong. Irish coffee was so good! Beers on tap are good too 4. Ambience: relaxed, well lit, 2 stories of brewery and nice big tables if you want to have a big group or play board games while drinking. Such an awesome spot!

Little did I imagine what I would find in this Craft Kitchen and Brewery located on one of the busiest corners of the building across from the Center in the Square in the corner of Campbell Ave and Wall Street in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. When I first walked in I was attracted by the large sign hanged high above in capital letters: "LEAVE YOUR MARK." It automatically gave a positive attitude of the place and of what life should be all about. The friendly host greeted me with a warm smile and immediately made me feel comfortable and at home. I told him.I was there to have dinner and he took me to a table in an excellent location next to a window. As I reviewed the menu I noticed that the place was very clean and cozy, and almost full even though it was early on a Monday evening. I also noticed how engaging and friendly all the staff members were with the customers who were enenjoying a good time either alone or with close friends. This was a place where members of the community could hang out with the ones they loved, either family or friends, and enjoy some time together with a quality drink and food. The ambiance of the place was such that reflected this very clearly. My server arrived also with a friendly and positive attitude, and very welcoming and happy to have me there for the very first time as a customer. She was very hospitable and knowledgeable about the menu and explained items on the menu that I had some questions about. The menus were nothing fancy, just simple pieces of paper, but what came after was an amazing dining experience with an extraordinary drink and food. To drink I ordered a Cherry Limeade Mocktail. And to eat I ordered the Big Pig Burger with bacon added and a side of French Fries. First came my drink and it looked as good as it tasted. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Just take a look at my photographs that came with this review and you will see what I mean. Then my server came walking toward me with the burger and fries, and with a big friendly smile. And never again will I think of a burger and fries in the same way. They looked and tasted amazingly delicious! The burger pattie was quality meat cooked as ordered and very juicy and tasty. And the fries were the perfect cut seasoned and fried Just perfect, and served inside a small replica of a frying basket. I highly recommend this restaurant to the entire community. It is one of the few quality Breweries that welcomes the entire family to come and share a wonderful time and meal together. The ambiance is warm, friendly, and relaxing. And the staff couldn't treat you better. The City of Roanoke should be proud and honored to house this local business next to its historical Marketplace.

    Pretzel Bites

I was in town, just getting there and hungry, saw Three Notch'd and checked out the menu. Though it was Sunday around 1PM, still brunch time for them, they had a very nice menu of lunch type food too. I opted for their pretzel bites to start. What drew me to them was the description of the mustard and beer cheese that came with them. The pretzels had a really nice flavor, but the texture was too hard. The cheese was decent, but not as "strong" in cheese nor beer flavor as I was hoping for and the texture was too thick, not good for dipping. The mustard was awesome. The pretzels still did taste really good, especially dipped into either, but the mustard was better. Next up I ordered their boneless wings, but first I asked the server how they were made. She described them as freshly battered sliced chicken tenders, which sounded amazing to me! I was still hesitant that they might come out like hard nuggets. Well, they were absolutely perfect! The batter on them was great and the texture, tenderness of the chicken was great. I ordered the gochujang flavor and that sauce was very tasty! It had a nice spice to it as well. Service was a mixed bag... The hostess who sat me was really friendly and helpful. My server seemed like she had better things to do. Though she did a nice job answering my questions about the menu, refills on my water and attentiveness were seriously lacking. Overall, I really did enjoy my visit and would definitely return.

Made a stop here with our pup while on a roadtrip. We were suprised this was open on a Labor Day,but we got the last outdoor seating spot and a water bowl to our pup right away. Quick and efficient service + amazing beer & food. Beer is probably some of the best IPAs I've ever had! So so good (Emperor's IPA). Quirky interior inside made this feel very cozy (while heading in to use the restroom lol-dogs are only allowed outside). I was worried that the outdoor seating will be in the way for everyone but the segregated chain offers separation from those passing by, and some privacy, too. Burgers were amazing (although I must say we came here really hungry after a strenuous hike!). Would come back again in a heartbeat!

We stopped in for happy hour where you can get $1 off draft beers ms appetizers from 3-6! The bartenders and all the staff were super friendly and accommodating. We tried different beers and the more we talked with the staff the more we enjoyed ourselves! The watermelon sour was delicious! Delicious enough for me to buy a 6 pack to take home! They also offer flights if you can't quite choose just one! The only reason for 4 stars was the food. We tried the pretzel bites (which honestly tasted like sweet bread not very pretzel like) and the nachos. The nachos needed more toppings, but all in all it was fine food to snack on while drinking great beer! There's lots of seating with an upstairs and downstairs. And a small patio if you want to bring your dog. The locations is perfect right in the center of downtown Roanoke!

After a 7 hour drive in the car, I needed a beer and some comfort food. Three notch being dog friendly fulfilled our needs. The beer was solid and went down easy. My side salad and Philly cheese sandwich fulfilled my needs and made me forget about the previous 6.5 hours. Located in the heart of Roanoke, VA this restaurant is very good and deserves 4 stars. Our waitress was personable and even brought water for our dog.

Pretzel bites and pit master fries. Yum

Brewery meets family friendly environment meets mid-scale restaurant meets hip atmosphere meets quality food and drink. Sit outside -- outdoor seating was definitely the move. Not a ton of space outside, but still a better option if you're looking for intimacy, privacy, a great experience. Even the starters were very filling. We shared two starters and two entrées, and it was way too much food, but everything was incredible. They have a great mix of traditionally fried food options, and healthier/unique comfort food styles. It was really hard to choose what to get because so many things sounded uniquely delicious. You can't go wrong with any of the drinks. Large beer selection, but as non-beer drinkers we opted for cocktail options and they were phenomenal. Lots of flavor.

After being ranked 4th among Yelp's Top 50 Most Prolific Elites of 2025, a distinction recognizing…read moremy consistent community engagement and high-quality contributions, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to go back and write follow-up reviews on those restaurants that impressed me the most during 2025, and The River and Rail Restaurant located in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example of one of them. Going back to this restaurant after the great honor that I had received from Yelp, made me recall the first time that I dined here. I invite you that after reading this review, you go back and read that one, and view my photographs accompanying it, because it's one of which I am most proud of, and an experience that I will never forget and forever cherish. I arrived at the restaurant on time at five o'clock sharp and as I waited for them to open I had an opportunity to meet and chat with a couple who had been loyal customers of this restaurant for years since it first opened. They, as well as I, were aware of the beautiful location of the restaurant on one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Roanoke. As soon as the doors opened, I allowed them to enter first and then when the host came back she gave me a warm and friendly greeting, welcoming me back, and took me to an ideal table, where I had a perfect view of the entire restaurant, from their open kitchen, to their bar, to the entire dining room and entrance, allowing me to capture in photographs the real feel of the ambiance of this cozy, yet elegant, upscale Southern, New-American restaurant known for its scratch-made dishes using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, including house-cured meats and pickled vegetables, as well as very creative cocktails. Shortly after I was seated, my delightful server Caroline arrived, and after a warm greeting took my order. To drink I order their Strawberry Fields Forever Mocktail. As appetizer I ordered a half dozen Oysters together with their famous Oyster Wraps. And as my main entrée, the Painted Hills Filet, cooked medium-rare. All the staff seemed so happy to see me and the manager came by to say hello and congratulate me for my outstanding Yelp accomplishment of 2025. My excellent server made sure that my order was well-paced, came by at the appropriate times to fill my glass with water and see if all was to my liking. Everything tasted amazingly delicious. Starting from the unique taste of my creative mocktail, to my flavorful appetizer, to my exquisite Filet main entrée that was so tender and cooked just right. The chefs in this fine dining restaurant are amazing and the quality of their meats is top notch. For dessert I had one of my favorite desserts, since I first had it there, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. This dessert is absolutely mouthwatering. What an extraordinary dining experience I once again had there. Fine dining at its best. For those very special occasions, I highly recommend this restaurant. Or you can always make any day special, by dining there.

My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.

And every time one returns to dine there, it only serves to reinforce the perfect attachment that one has acquired from the very first time they dined there and had the pleasure of enjoying an extraordinary fine dining experience. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Alexander's, in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. From the moment I arrived and walked through their door, I was greeted in such a way, by none other than Bjorn, the Dining Room Manager himself, that made me feel appreciated and immediately made me feel at home. Neither the coldness of the weather nor the accumulated snow could hinder me from my decision to dine here this evening. I was the first one to arrive after they opened their doors. Since the streets were still icy and filled with snow, I left my Lexus at home and took a Lyft to the restaurant, which was not far from my neighborhood, the Historic Old Southwest. Since it was a slow night due to the weather, the Dining Room Manager himself doubled as my server for the evening. To drink, we discussed my flavor liking for a Mocktail, and he came up with a special one, that ended up tasting amazing. To dine, I started with the Deconstructed cajunese california roll appetizer. It was amazingly delicious! Then I had a Salad vinaigrette, which was included with every entrée, and a French Baguette with a cube of butter. The baguette slices with butter were so fresh, soft in the inside and crispy on the outside, that they confirmed my view that the quality of a restaurant's bread and butter is a reflection of the quality of the restaurant and its cuisine. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. As my main entrée, I had the Grilled filet of beef, sauce marchand de vin, cooked medium-rare. The filet was cooked to perfection, just as ordered, so tender, juicy, and flavorful. It was a culinary masterpiece from Chef and General Manager, Boni M. Webb, who graciously came out to greet me, and gave me an opportunity to personally celebrate her magnificent cuisine. She reminded me of my Japanese student who obtained the best grade in my Business class at the university where I taught. She was very humble and kind. As the Grand Finale dessert, on the advice of my server and general manager, I ordered their Glace au chocolat. It was wonderful. What an outstanding dining experience I once again had in this outstanding restaurant with a unique combination of exceptional food, atmosphere, and heartfelt service. I highly recommend it, and can't wait to return.

Dinner started with some nice bread (and really good butter), and a salad came with my lamb ragu. It was all really good. The lamb was super rich and very flavorful. My only suggestion would be to serve the ragu over the polenta, and to add more vegetables. As it was, the dinner was "just enough;" I wasn't stuffed but I wasn's hungry, either. Really good dinner!

It has been in existence since 1948, owned and operated by a lovely Greek immigrant couple, who from the moment you walk in, make you feel at home. Open daily from Monday through Friday, it is one of the few restaurants around that opens the earliest for breakfast, at 6AM, and closes at 1:30PM. Today, I decided to re-visit the place for an early breakfast, since it has plenty of free offstreet parking up to 8AM. I arrived at around 6:45AM and parked next to the sidewalk in front of the restaurant on a street parking spot. There were already some steady customers dining inside. As soon as I arrived the wife and co-owner gave me a warm welcome and I reciprocated by wishing her a Good Morning in Greek. Somehow, I find that making an effort to speak to others in their native language, establishes an immediate, friendly connection with them. I sat at one of their booths, and she asked me if I wanted coffee to start off with. I answered in the affirmative and then gave her my order. I ordered Paul's Breakfast Special. 2 eggs, with choice of bacon, ham or sausage, home fries and toast. All this, including the drink of your choice, for $8.00. I ordered my eggs over easy, bacon for the meat, and white toast. If you look at my photographs accompanying this review you will notice the quality of each of the items in my breakfast and how they were cooked to perfection, just as I requested. The bacon strips were thick and meaty, and cooked to order. The eggs were perfectly over easy. And the home fries were slices of potatoes fried just right. After delivering my breakfast to my table, she came by to refill my coffee. While I was enjoying my breakfast, other groups of customers came in and also received a friendly, warm welcome. A father and daughter came in, and soon after, the lady co-owner brought a slice of freshly baked cake with a lit candle on top and sang to the girl the Happy Birthday song. Relaxed ambiance, quality food, and excellent service, make for an extraordinary dining experience. Sometimes one finds the most amazing restaurants, tucked away on a side street.

After all, I've often liked to sit in the front row when attending live events. What I found was a bit disappointing. More than a restaurant this is a place to drink beer and cocktails while watching a game on a large screen TV. It has a very limited food menu and when I went the place seemed deserted. While I was there only one other customer came in, drank two beers while watching the big screen TV, talked.over the phone, and left. My server was very nice and friendly, but the food left much to be desired. I ordered a BBQ Burger that was listed on the menu as a 1/3 lb Angus burger with onion rings, bacon, cheddar cheese, and BBQ sauce. Sounded great but I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review. The beef patty was small and dry and the one onion ring looked beaten. Even though it has a pool table in the back and signs up that seemed to have activities going on throughout the week, this is not a place that I would like to be in the front row, especially for the poor quality of their food and questionable ambiance.

Nothing spectacular and no imagination at all. Very overpriced for such a bland breakfast $40 a person. It was all buffet style. Service was not the best, had to ask for water multiple times, and the dirty dishes were taking up most of the table. We had to start stacking them. We had a table of four people so it was quite annoying. At one point our server said a large table was coming in after us and was about to be seated so he needed to take care of them before he could ask us our drink order. We had already eaten more than half our food before we ordered our drinks. There was plenty of parking cost $6 for up to two hours. Bathrooms and lobby were beautiful and very clean. I think I will stick to night time dining. At least i can check the Regency Sunday Brunch off my brunch list.

So much so that last year I had the privilege of dining at this restaurant on my Birthday. Once again my dining experience at The Regency Room at the Hotel Roanoke far exceeded my expectations. Lowell, the Maitre d' (French for 'master of the house'), known as the dining room manager, with primary responsibility of ensuring that guests are satisfied, greeted me with a warm welcome and took me to my favorite table which I had requested when I made my reservation. There I was able to enjoy my meal while listening to the live Jazz Trio Entertainment, who among other songs, graciously played the Aladdin theme song which they remembered I had requested they play last time I had dined here. Soon after I was seated at my table, my server Brittany came by and gave me a warm welcome. She helped me choose the Chai Blossom Mocktail to drink, and not long after, one of the assistant servers delivered a basket of nice fresh bread with a little bowl of soft whipped butter. To me, the quality of the bread and butter of a restaurant is one of those little things that make the big difference in the unique dining experience. The drink tasted just wonderful, and as I was enjoying it my server surprised me with a tiny hors d'oeuvre called Amuse Bouche, explaining what it was. I can only remember that the taste was exceptional. I had the Oysters Rockefeller as appetizer and the char-grilled Filet Mignon medium rare as my main entrée. Everything was prepared and cooked to perfection and with a wonderful presentation. For dessert I had their special Pistachio Crème Brûlée. It tasted amazing, and reminded me of the Dubai Chocolate, one of my favorites at the moment. And to finish off the evening, the maitre d' Lowell, surprised us all by singing the song "What a Wonderful Word", as the Jazz Trio played along. Louis Armstrong would have been proud of his rendition. What a grand finale to conclude what was an extraordinary dining experience!
