Been going here for the last 6 months every Sunday. Most of the varsity A team staff know our drink order by heart. The last five weeks they have hired some new staff. If you don't get served water immediately, you're getting poor service. The last five Sundays have been a nightmare. The last time we went in the server asked for our drink order. Then she asked for our food order. Then she asked for our food order again. Then she asked what we wanted for our drinks. The coffee was lukewarm and full of grounds. When the food was brought out it was almost room temp. I asked for my eggs scrambled well and I guess she forgot to write that down. I asked for a side of salsa and upon looking at the bill she never wrote it down. I asked for fruit instead of hashbrowns and she brought me hashbrowns. We waited longer than usual to have our food brought to us and it was an about 2 hours before closing so they were not busy. The waitress never asked us if we wanted refills. In the past I haven't spoken up and just let it go, this time I spoke to someone about this and we never heard from the manager. They offered to remake my eggs but at that point I declined we had been there long enough. The week before that, I ordered my food with a cup of soup. The waitress specifically asked me do you want a cup or a bowl, I said cup, and she never brought me my soup. Similar issues have occurred in the previous weeks. This new staff is letting food sit to long, no water being given as soon as we sit down, orders constantly missing something or not getting what we asked for, toast coming out cold, butter not even melted. One server even brought out my to-go box and sat it right on top of my bacon that I was still eating. So, if you're planning on eating here make sure you sit in a section where you know your servers have been there a long time. read more

Gross! Fries were inedible ... tasted like oil was never changed. Split pea soup was disgusting!! Never again! However... our waitress was delightful and it was great service... but unfortunately the food quality was so low that the service didn't make up for it:( read more

I don't even know how to rate this... Food is great.. but service is another story.. I don't want to say rude but very unprofessional, get the feeling of being rushed.. I can't say all waitresses are this way but the one that served us today was very unprofessional.. Long Acrylic nails, didn't ask for our complete order, refilled cup that wasn't even coffee didn't even ask if we would like another cup, just walked away, had to ask for creamer and sugar twice.. I won't say I won't go back because I'm sure I will. But I hope I don't get that waitress anymore.. read more

Both times I have eaten here for Sunday brunch the place was packed but parking was easy and we were seated right away. They keep coffee mugs on the table ready for a cup to be poured. My friend wanted a cup so they filled er up. I started looking at the cup now full of coffee thinking I saw a brown hair on the lip of the mug. Turns out it was a hairline crack and coffee went everywhere. After replacing the cup the waitress waited for our orders. I had a couple of questions but while I was in the middle of my first question's sentence, the waitress walked away. My friend and I both looked at each other like ummm...okay. She came back and answered what she thought I was asking (It wasn't). I then started asking my second question and she did it again! After returning I had given up and just ordered a breakfast sandwich. It arrived quickly and my special request was fulfilled correctly (plus I was charged correctly). My friend had stuffed waffles and he was a little underwhelmed. Throughout the meal the male server assistant repeatedly peeked his head around the corner looking at my friend. Doesn't mean much as far as this review goes, I just thought it was kinda weird. My friend went back a second time and ordered biscuits and gravy. He said that meal was much better and now he understood why people seem to like this place so much. He and I went back two weeks later, me ordering the same special request breakfast sandwich and him ordering the same biscuits and gravy. My order arrived and was correct but it wasn't as good as before. The flavor was somewhat lacking this time and my breakfast sandwich was falling apart (which shouldn't happen when it was just a croissant, hard fried egg and two slices of American cheese). Oh and this is an $8 breakfast sandwich. I risked paying that a second time because I liked it so much the first time. The biscuits and gravy were also a fail. No flavor, the gravy had zero seasoning and lacked even the slightest bit of spice. read more

Stopped in here for lunch while waiting on a flight at the airport. Holy cow! This place is a gem. Had the Philly steak sandwich, fries and a bowl of potato soup (which all came as a meal). I ate less than half of what they brought out, not because of quality, but quantity. The portions are HUGE. They are also fantastic. Potato soup was uber creamy and tasty. The Philly steak was nice slices of steak, not the thin junk. Good quality, tender stuff. It was seasoned well and the peppers onions and mushrooms were awesome. Oh, and the fries were extra crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Simply a very nicely done lunch sandwich big enough for two. read more

We have been here 4x in the last 5 weeks, always for breakfast on the weekend. I love the pancakes and waffles and their breakfast selection is robust. My wife has had some non-breakfast items (BLT) and they were also good. Service has been nothing but great and for the price, you can beat it on the NW side of south bend. I marvel at how quickly the food comes out, and let's face it, nobody likes a long wait when they're foaming at the mouth for some waffles and bacon! This place is indeed "Top Notch" read more

Came here for brunch and it was delicious! I had crepes and they were good. The service was great and food came out quickly, even though they were somewhat busy. It was a great place to stop for a meal before getting on the train, which is only 5 minutes from here. read more

Having visited this location for numerous breakfast meals, I can feel confident in giving it five stars. Even when busy, you are seated quickly, served efficiently, and leave satisfied. Always delicious. Best breakfast this side of town. We both enjoyed "skillets" she had chicken fried steak with gravy along with scrambled eggs and potatoes, I had the hobo skillet, corned beef hash, cheese, eggs and potatoes. Hot and delicious, with plenty to take home. Love their new location but be forewarned, it has been busy! Dining room is noisy (needs some acoustical treatment) but the service was great. We stopped for breakfast while passing though town. The food was very good and service was "top notch" to go with their name. Portions are huge, so our family of four ended up quite a few left overs that couldn't travel with us. The kids' Mickey pancakes are huge and delighted our youngest daughter who could barely eat an ear. The tall stack of pancakes w/ cinnamon apples was delicious and also more than my husband could handle. The Mediterranean omelette was excellent. The bacon Belgium waffle was perfect according to my son. Top Notch definitely nails a good breakfast, though I would recommending some meal sharing if you don't want to waste a lot or be taking leftovers to go. read more

I took my mother and aunt for breakfast this morning. Everything was very good and certainly no one left hungry! They had basic eggs and bacon. I had the mexican skillet with a side of pancakes. Had a horribly overcooked "our 1/3 lb burger" for lunch meal. Dry, absolutely tasteless. I wouldn't use that description "our" if it isn't your best shot at being a better burger, "Top Notch," right?? The burger was not fresh ground. It was like a Gordon's frozen patty. Not a hand-made patty with fresh ground beef. Had fake grill marks on patty...too symmetric to be natural. It was a large burger and it looked fine. The homemade clam chowder had no flavor of the sea, no flavor of anything. It tasted like heavily flour-thickened potato soup. No herbs whatsoever. There were bits of something, which must have been clams, but so sparse it didn't flavor the soup. This was disappointing because what used to pull me to Top Notch was the homemade soups with entree meals. I remember having a great chicken noodle at the previous location. Place was fairly empty since after 1pm lunch crowd, so not that busy. Service was excellent. I raised my rating to 2 because of it. Dark-haired young woman who was our server was very attentive. She was super helpful with menu when we had a few questions. She was warm & wonderful. She observed I was not eating the burger or fries. Maybe had 3 bites of burger. She offered to talk to the kitchen about replacing it. I didn't want to make them cook something in place of it, but appreciated the commitment to service. They took a reasonable amount off the bill, since I had french fries and the fresh rolls. The fresh rolls are wonderful! I ate my husband's soup. Would suggest they use larger butter patties. There was 1/2 tsp butter cups. Had to use 4 for each roll. Wrapping costs more than the butter! My husband ordered about his BLT WITHOUT mayonnaise. We chatted with wait person about it, sharing that often we say "no mayo" but get it. (He will not eat it if it has mayo.). Well, it was made with mayo. Wait person realized it in kitchen, apologized, and said she would have another one out in a minute. Cashier was friendly. She asked how everything was. We chatted about it, upbeat way. I know one meal never represents a restaurant. The place is very clean & fresh looking. Comfortable booths. I was disappointed how it's not like the old Top Notch menu, which was huge. You could get anything on it! We took our out-of-state guests to the Western one in fall 2015. They RAVED about the broad food choices, quality, ample amount of food to eat, everyone found something good to order. One of our Favorite breakfast places! Great food, nice variety, large portions, good price. Excellent and quick service even when busy. Visited regularly when on mayflower road, new location on lincolnway even better. Try one of their Skillets and stuffed French toast! Also take carry out orders which are very fast. The portions were very big so I had to take half of it home. My friend had the Patty Melt and we split half of our sandwiches so we could try both! This was the BEST Patty Melt I have ever had. Where to start on this place!?! I first started eating here when I would call in my order and come pick it up to eat it at work. They have reasonable prices for the portion of food you get! They also have turkey sausage for people like me who try to avoid pork! When ever I go to dine in the waiter staff is polite and food is always prepared right and promptly. We stopped by Top Notch on a Sunday and it was very busy. It's your average locally owned restaurant serving breakfast all day. It was clean and our server was very friendly and efficient. It has the standard fare - eggs, omelets, biscuits & gravy, burgers, fries, etc. The portion sizes were very generous for modest prices.
