There are not too many mexican restaurants in the area so this place is worth checking out. You get a pretty big portion of food and free chips and salsa prior to your meal. We have eaten here a few times before. In the past we have had great service and food. Yesterday the opposite happen. I was very disappointed in the service, atmosphere and the food. I understood they seem to be very busy when we got there. It took about 15-20 minutes before our server even acknowledged we were there. Once he took our order it took forever again. Wondering if our order was even placed. Finally I got his attention and asked if our food was coming. He said yes, he did refill our drinks a couple of times. Once we got our food he never asked if it was ok or offered anything else. He brought the check but didn't let us look at it. He picked the card up with the check and ran it through. Another find right off the freeway. I had Chile Pablano and George had mole. The wine selection was limited but the beer and margaritas were great! The biggest surprise was they had churros. I have been going to Torero's for multiple years now and can hands down say it is my favorite Mexican place in the area! The service is fast--I have yet to receive my meal in over 20 minutes, and the food is very good. In the small amount of time you are waiting, you can snack on the free chips and salsa. They have a very diverse menu, however I recommend the carne asada burritos; they are very big and can easily be split into two meals. In addition, the food is a good price and are generously served. I've been to a hundred A-OK Mexican joints just like this. That's not necessarily a bad thing; you just need to manage your expectations. The atmosphere here feels like a chain and what a surprise, it is a small chain! The décor is better than many hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints. It's also very clean. I travel a great deal on business so I'm often alone. I like to sit at the bar to have my meal. The bar here is a joke. It's small and uncomfortable and feels like an afterthought. I can't imagine meeting friends here to have a drink. For that, there are a dozen better places within a three minute drive. The house margaritas are pre-made and are served from a giant five gallon metal container. They are cheap and forgettable. For my meal I ordered Carne Asada ($12.75). It was filets of skirt steak charbroiled and garnished with whole green onions, jalapeños, guacamole, pico de gallo, rancho beans, Mexican rice, and corn tortillas. It was served in a flash and was a large portion. And yes the plate was hot. If I'm ever served a Mexican meal on a cool plate I'll drop dead from shock! As expected it was A-OK and the price was right. If you need to fill up on cheap Mexican food these folks will get the job done. Tried this place at the reco of a coworker who was just through the area. Overall food quality was very good. See my pics. Hot tasty and it hit the spot for my entire family. Chimichangas, burritos and enchiladas were excellent and very filling. My wife ordered fajitas that offered a lot of food and tasted great. The letdown here was not the food - it was very good, however he service was sub par. The server took our order quickly, and was fast returning with our drinks... The food also came out very quickly.. However, once we had food he never returned. No follow ups on how he food was, drink refills etc. We sat for 15 mins surrounded by empty dishes and finally had to go to the bar to request our bill. We never did see our waiter again. Having to drive 850 miles in 1day is challenging enough. Add to that a tire situation in Erie, PA which caused us to go Firestone to get it fixed. As we were waiting for the tire, we decided that my partner needed a drink to relax from the previous 6 hrs and for the remaining 6hr drive ahead. We decided to take the food on the road. We didn't want fast food and she needed alcohol, so when I noticed the $2.99 margaritas on a review it became an easy decision. While we sat at the bar, my partner had 2 drinks, we both ate chips n salsa and waited for our to-go order. The chips are Top-Notch because they are made in-house!! Ask for the beans n rice, that come with the entree to be brought out as an appetizer. It's great. The portions are very nice. There was something weird in the toilet, so I went to the bbq spot to do my thing. It won't be there when you go. ;-) just being honest I had a burrito with pork n green sauce. It is very good. My partner had the tortas. They are also very good. I can't imagine anything here wouldn't be good. Lastly, the staff was very attentive and quiet about it. I don't know if they are always that way. Wow, this place is awful. This is the worst mexican food I've ever had. I don't understand why it's rated four stars. I have done a lot of traveling and been to some really great mexican restaurants. The only positive I can list is the prices but once you get the food, you will understand why. The salsa is bland and thin. It took some of the hot sauce at the table to give it any flavor. I ordered the mole poblano which featured a couple thin strips of chicken in a large pool of flavorless mole sauce. The rice was burnt and the refried beans were average. My boyfriend ordered the steak fajitas which were similar in portion. Barely enough steak to lightly line the bottom of two tortillas and a small pile of peppers and onions. It also came with the same burnt rice and average refried beans. The only food that actually tasted good was the cheese dip which was sufficiently flavorful. All I can surmise is that the people in this area who are rating it highly haven't been exposed to good mexican food so don't have anything better to compare it to. Service is neglectful. The server avoided eye contact and took forever to come back to give us our check. All in all, I'd pass on Torero's. Go to Taco Bell. At least there the food has some flavor. read more

Wow! What a great find when we stumbled on Toreros's over 4 years ago. The local Mexican food chains pale in comparison to this authentic restaurant. I buddy from work took me to try Oaxakena (sp?), a lunch menu dish of beef strips, bacon strips, with veggies, rice, beans and tortillas. It may not sound all that special, but my girlfriend and I go there nearly monthly just to both have this dish. We found a place in Springfield, KY that has a similar (not quite similar enough) they call Alhambre. The staff are authentic as is their extensive menu and they have drink specials. I may have to take back all the bad things I've said about east coast Mexican food in the last couple of years-- Torero's delivered! Chips and salsa are free, unlimited, and delicious, if not as spicy as I'd hoped for. Prices are low; a lot of dishes are under $10, and "fancier" options like carne asada and the seafood entrees are still under $15. They've got a respectable beer menu, and what looks like great margaritas. Most importantly, the food is great! Things ordered at my table included: --carne asada: I loved this! It's been years since I had a good rendition of this, and Torero's was great. I really liked that it came with grilled jalapenos. The rice was a little dry for my taste, and the black beans weren't anything special, but overall I'd definitely order this again. --seafood burrito: my friend raved about this dish, so it must have been good. --mojarra: you don't see an actual whole fish very often. The presentation was impressive, and the friend who ordered it seemed to like it. If you find yourself in Erie, this little nonassuming spot is worth a visit. read more

My fiancé and I were really surprised to see that our favorite restaurant has such unfavorable reviews. Toreros is a rare gem in Erie. The wait staff are friendly, the service is lightning fast and the food is phenomenal. Gigantic portions and the best guacamole I've ever had. It's so hard to find restaurants in Erie that have vegetarian options worth ordering but Toreros has at least 10 meatless dishes that are all incredible. I love Mexican food. I loved it in Cozumel and I've loved it in Alabama. Took a friend to a party and decided to have dinner with my one daughter while friend was doing her thing. Looked this place up and was impressed by the pictures. All in the it was just okay. The chips were good but they ran out way to fast and the salsa was like tomato juice with onion. I didn't really taste any salt or garlic or cilantro. The burritos and tacos were all filled with meat. It just wasn't really seasoned. The cheese was monterey jack and not the delicious Mexican cheese that I've had elsewhere. The beans and rice though, those were flavorful and impressive. It's a little pricey for food I didn't even finish. Maybe it was an off day or I got the wrong combo. But our trips to Erie are few and far between so we will probably try someplace else next time. read more
