The owner welcomes you into Toro with a smile. If you've been there more than twice, chances are he will remember your name. The first thing I noticed, after the warm greeting, is how unbelievably clean the store is. The menu has many choices-- options for the vegan, carnivore, or pescatarian. Everything is made fresh and can be as a burrito, bowl, or salad. I prefer chicken, so the first time I went in, tried the Bird Rock and was pleasantly surprised by the texture of the rice and how the seasoning of the chicken mixed perfectly with the unexpected blend of vegetables. For my second visit I went more traditional with the Standard Issue. Again, I came away from that lunch completely satisfied with the amount of food and freshness of the ingredients. I expect to explore more into the Vegan and other Carnivore options soon. The selections are simply too interesting for this foodie to pass up. Toro also has catering on the menu. The owner said they've done events up to 60 so far, but I have a feeling they'll soon be doing larger ones. The food is too good to not consider if you plan to entertain guests. read more

I heard a lot of great things about this restaurant. So I went out of my way to check it out. Food was pretty good. I got pork empanadas and asked for the manager's recommendation. He told me about the Sicilian empanadas. I ordered 5 of each. I showed up around 5pm but it felt like I walked in 5 min before closing. Not disrespectful but just apathetic. It wasn't welcoming. That didn't discourage me because I wanted to try out the food The pork empanadas were good and the dip complimented the dish really well. Next I tried to manager's choice, the Sicilian empanadas. I ate one and then I felt this would be perfect for a breakfast meal. I saved the rest of them for tomorrow morning and it was perfect with my coffee. Both selections were crunchy and had good flavor. The place was clean but small, and the parking was very limited. All the other restaurants reserved the main parking spots so you either have to walk a bit or park on the street. I took a picture of the automatic tip. Small hidden place but a great find. I got the Barbie bowl and the pork and pineapple blend was amazing. It was super flavorful and fresh. The only drawback was the price. It wasn't a huge portion and they charged a 16% service fee for counter service so it was quite expensive for a smaller portion. read more

Automatic 15% tip on all orders. This is a small restaurant with only a handful of tables, maybe enough room for 10 people. Portions were way too unbalanced for my liking. It said it came with tomatoes, but I got only 3 diced tomatoes on top which is a joke. Not enough chimichurri and way too much rice. Just wasn't impressed with it. I finished everything else in the bowl and still had a bunch of white rice. It is quality food but if I am paying $20 for a bowl it better give good portions and flavor. The flavor of the pork in the San Juan is spot on. I really enjoyed the taste. The portions were unbalanced - too much rice, not enough beans, and a sad serving of meat. Shoutout to any place that can handle 9 girls rolling in at 3pm with a smile! Not only were these guys super funny and helpful, but their dishes were delicious. We probably spent longer deciding what to get than we did actually eating, everything just sounded so good. And it was! Food here is so inventive and delicious! The plantains are cooked so perfectly and I loved the flavors in my risi beastie bowl. I couldn't help but order the fluffatellanananutter (because that name haha) and it was decadent!! It was a frozen banana covered in Nutella and marshmallow fluff, all encased in a deep fried casing. Delish. They also just started serving beer and cocktails, and feature a happy hour weekdays 2-5pm! The staff (owners??) were really friendly and kind. Decor was fun and trendy. The space was small though so it lends itself more to take out unfortunately. Definitely plan to come back! read more

I really like my chicken bowl from here! I got it as a bowl and it had rice, black beans, bell peppers, sour cream and a pico. The chicken was marinated and was really tender. He got the pork one as a burrito and it is huge! It was slow cooked pulled pork with plantains, rice, and beans. We just needed to add some hot sauce. I don't have a ton to say here, but I will start by appreciating how apt the name "Food Concepts" is here - the menu is really baffling. The burritos are not served build-your-own (Chipotle) style. Rather, they are chosen from a curated menu, which seems to have been assembled by spinning a large ingredient wheel and combining the random selections. This is not what I ordered, but there is a burrito that includes: chicken, bacon, peas, mushrooms, and risotto - huh? A majority of the other menu combinations are .. equally as random! Remarkably, the menu item I did order (Bombay) has not a single overlap in ingredients. The menu is made up of 16 combinations of 57(!!!) unique ingredients. That is insane, impossible to scale, and makes me feel like I have now been part of a clandestine Harvard experiment that will conclude in six months. Anyways, a lede I'm burying down here is that, at least in the case of the burrito I ordered, Toro Food Concepts will deep fry the fully assembled burrito in its tortilla. This detail is unmentioned on the menu! I think this means their burritos are chimichangas? I'm not sure on that. The taste of my deep-fried burrito, which was made with cauliflower rice for some reason, was almost exactly that of a donut. This was reinforced by the fact that the included mango chutney is very sweet. Imagine eating a glazed donut filled with cauliflower rice; now, try to imagine a reason you would ever want to do that. I get the sense that I have just beta-tested a restaurant. There were things to like here - all of the ingredients I tried were well-seasoned and prepared nicely. I suspect a normal, drastically simplified, and not-deep-fried burrito from here would be very tasty, but also not a Food Concept. All of the burritos can be turned into a bowl or salad, which I don't think can be deep-fried, so that's an option. The prices are also all reasonable, especially for the sides where the portions are very large. The environment and service was pleasant and fine. That said, at this point, I cannot recommend these Food Concepts. I would be willing to revisit this opinion after Harvard has gathered all of the data it needs from this experiment. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Locally owned is cool, the minute I walked in, after seeing the setup, it was an obviously one man show, which I totally respect but am immediately wary of. I got a bahn mi bowl for $20 after the auto-gratuity and man. This thing came out with 4 slices of pre-packaged ham that was touched to the grill, a bunch of pickled vegetables I recognized from my local king soopers, a few cucumber pieces, a drizzle of mayo, and white rice with butter. Even after looking at it, I still tried it and wanted to like it. Not once, but twice I bit into processed cartilage in the ham. The rest of it was nothing like a bahn mi and I could've made a better bowl at home for under $5. Will not be returning. read more

OMG! GET HERE NOW! This is probably the coolest food in town! WOW! This bowl concept is seriously delicious and SUPER high quality. I've never seen such an INCLUSIVE menu. It's just awesome. Delicious! I got the beef Picadillo, the mushroom/cheese/potato, and the sausage and potato empanadas- (pierogi lovers should try those ones out, they're like fried pierogis). At $4 they were a really decent size, and their spicy mayo/sauce was a great add. They were perfectly golden brown, no excess oil in the box even after my 10 minute walk home they were still hot and crunchy! The owner and service were so nice, and the food was ready quickly. I've been twice - first stop ordered Barbie (bowl), empanadas, and sweet plantains. The Barbie was very tasty but a bit sweet for my liking, empanadas were good, plantains are incredible. Second stop I ordered the San Juan (bowl) and plantains again. The San Juan is absolutely incredible. The food is cooked in front of you and is hot and fresh.
