Curtis Park Creamery clearly is an establishment rich of history and it is awesome that places like this are still around. However, with that being said, I did not think that the food is worth anything more than 3 stars. I thought everything tasted very bland and just mediocre overall. I thought that maybe it was just what I ordered, but my friend who ordered something completely different had the same sentiment. When I first moved to Denver it reminded me of Oz: everything was all shiny and new, full of promise and vigor, a beautiful place no doubt, with a spectacular snow-capped backdrop. Where the sun's radiance is omnipresent, and the inhabitants conceal their individuality behind mirrored shades as they chase their wants, and where their dreams do indeed come true. I also thought that maybe this was a bit of an illusion; there had to be a little grit behind all those reflective glass clad skyscrapers, where the wide concrete freeways give way to neighborhood streets with timeworn houses based on human scale and a different kind of vitality. Where the pace is less hurried and whose inhabitants occasionally reveal their soul, but most importantly share in their secret places for good, cheap, and thoroughly satisfying food. I was not wrong. Denver does have grit, you just have to work for it, seek it out a bit, and just ask. You will be rewarded more than you know. The Curtis Park Creamery is a local kind of place and has been for a while. This restaurant is not only a place that is locally owned, it has a funky history, and serves up some mighty tasty and cheap Mexican food. I am not an authority of this type of food, but I do know what I like and that usually involves some kind of cheese. No problem finding that here. And when that cheese comes encased in smoky poblanos, is deep fried, and then is 'smothered' in an amazing red chile, then you have definitely reached my soul. I ordered the #17 combo which consisted of two of the aforementioned smothered (smo. on the menu) rellenos and a side of beans and rice that were also both smo., all for only $6.99. Wow. The sauce had a warming heat which is perfect for a cold Denver day, heck it's great for a hot Denver day. The side of refried beans is not your usual chain version but a slightly soupy rendition and had a depth of flavor which could never be mistaken for anything remotely resembling 'fast casual'. And the rice, again surprisingly flavored with more of that wonderful smo. Mmmm. I think that smo. really means "give me some mo'!" In addition to the combo plates, there are burritos (all for less than $5, with a smo. bean and cheese, $3.35), enchiladas, menudo (yup!), tacos, etc. Oh, there is also Frito Pie on the menu board. Frito Pie! The Curtis Park Creamery is strictly a carry out place, you will need to get in line with everyone else, and when it is your turn to place your order you better know what you want from the menu board because this place gets busy. I've eaten here 3 times in the past week, and I feel comfortable giving them a rating, to bump them up a little. I should preface this by saying that I grew up near a Taco Bueno in Texas, and since their mismanagement and all-but-demise, I've been looking for something along those lines, especially for beef burritos. I even figured out how to make a beef burrito myself, with a McCormick spice pack. I moved to Denver to a place close by Curtis Park. Upon visiting the park, I had to stop here. Their beef burrito is fantastic, especially if you pour their delicious chili on it. The next meal I had was a chicken quesadilla, which was shredded whitemeat, very nice. Finally, I tried their enchiladas, which were also excellent. I haven't tried their breakfast tacos or rice & beans yet. I make my own breakfast tacos my way, and rice & beans aren't on my diet. But if they're as good as everything else, I'm sure they're great. I'll definitely be doing my part to keep this place in business, and I'm happy it's close by! read more

Curtis Park Creamery is an institution! The menudo is the best for take-out; I always order it with my food. Who cares that you can't wait until you get home and you are now eating your Mexican treasure in your car! Fresh food always; I've not had anything bad from the Creamery--even thought the menudo, bean tostada, and bean/cheese burritos are what I've eaten most. Growing up in Denver, this was a quick spot to get homemade Mexican food and a soda; it still is as a grown up. My kids eat here--family eat here. I feel really bad giving such a Colorado relic a two star review but the food just isn't up to par. Like, at all. While the woman who took my order was extremely nice, the tacos/food itself were the equivalent to those that I can make at home.... Tacos came with loads of shredded cheddar and lettuce with chicken, thats it. SUPER CHEAP but I can get four amazing street tacos with veggies, homemade hot sauce and seasoned chicken for the same price of 4.50$. Won't be coming back I'm sorry to say. read more

Delicious! I love their beef and bean burrito smothered with half and half chile. They put lettuce and cheese in the inside, which is different, but I don't mind it. You gotta loce a nice sized burrito for under $4. They do take credit cards, but make sure you bring your ID too, otherwise, you have to pay cash. read more

In my three days in Denver, I came to Curtis Park Creamery twice. The only reason it wasn't thrice was because I didn't know of its existence on the first day. This is a no frills, no nonsense, Mexican joint. You better damn well know what you want to order when you walk up to the counter to order. No one is going to rush you or give you a hard time as you make up your mind, but just make sure your mind truly is made up when it's go time. I got a smothered breakfast burrito on both my visits. It was truly addictive. I asked for my order hot, and it really did pack a punch (which was much appreciated!). In addition to the heat, it was a legitimately delicious breakfast burrito. Heck, it was probably the best breakfast burrito I've ever had! It was so generously packed with eggs and meat, and that sauce was so delightfully fresh. At $4 a burrito, you'd be hard pressed to find a tastier meal for your buck. There aren't any tables to sit at for a dine-in meal, so takeout is your only choice. You can either walk across the street to the park, or take it wherever you desire. Since my accommodations were just three blocks away, that's where I always ended up with my food. If you ever find yourself in the Five Points neighborhood in Denver, I would highly suggest you head to this spot right away. The neighborhood is going through a gentrification phase right now, so I truly hope this spot can survive the changes over the coming years. Truly a gem. read more

This place was absolutely outstanding. I stepped in on a walk a few minutes before they closed. Normally that type of thing gets you a dirty look from the employees, but the gentlemen at the register couldn't have been nicer. I ordered a smothered burrito, a taco, and a red tamale for dinner, which is a lot, but the prices are extremely cheap so I figured the portions would be smaller. The taco was good, as was the burrito, and the meat was well seasoned and not at all greasy, which I loved! Next time I'll do a burrito without smothering it, however. It was just a little watery, and I felt took away from the other great flavors a little bit, but again I ordered it that way. The best part, hands down, were the tamales! I've grown up with tamales since I was a kid, and can be very particular about them. These were the closest to granny's I had in a LONG TIME! Taco Bell/Del Taco is better than this place by far!! I've been here twice and think that my two experiences are enough to warrant a decent opinion. First off, this is almost all "American" Mexican and the food I have had was not "good" at all. It was very close to sub par and by no means is this a 1st destination for anything I've ordered. Let me explain myself..... 1. They use thick shredded cheddar cheese on almost everything I've had. 2. They have horrible hours. (Only open til 5) 3. The "salsa" is terribly watery and ran straight through my tacos. (If you've ever ate a taco with a broken shell, add a red juice in there to make everything more fun!) 4. The food is greasy and seems low quality compared to other Mexican restaurants. 5. Their clientele isn't necessarily the cream of the crop, I've been in line with some crackhead looking folks. Overall, my advice is to avoid this place. Your dollars will be be better spent at Taco Bell. read more

I stopped in and asked what they would recommend. One of the women working the counter let me try two salsas, a little chicken (so moist) and some beans - I didn't even ask, I thought that was so nice. The hot sauce is very hot but not like other hot sauces where they taste like noting but "fire" - this had real dynamic flavor. So get the tamale and relleno and be better than me and take pics! I love this confusing little place. Curtis Park Creamery? No ice cream? Whaaa? I walked in on a busy afternoon, got in line, ordered 3 smothered tamales for a whopping $4 and drank up the awesome 'hole in the wall' atmosphere. These ladies mean business so take your time and choose what you want before you hem and haw in line with them because they MAY kick your ass out of line. No bullshit here. Love that. You wait in line after you order and they'll call out your number. Don't pass up those delightful chicharrones while you wait. The guy behind the register is beyond friendly and there isn't a credit card minimum which I was thankful for when my whole order cost under five bucks. A word of warning - the hot chili is NO JOKE. Before ya'll gabachos started moving into the E, this place was and still is a hit with the true "locals". I've since moved from the E, but still take the extra time to drive down here just for this. Yummmm, smothered chile relleno and #4 smothered were on my mind today....after being deathly ill for the past week, something other than liquid lunch popped into my mind and here is where I ended up. 4 stars for having lots of character: longtime joint, frequented by locals, everyone has character 2 stars for food I was looking for a place to grab a bite after stopping by the nearby DMV. At 11:15am, this place was already hopping - looked like a lot of locals and regulars. I ordered the #7 chicken burrito with beans, cheese, and lettuce. Order first, wait for food, pay when your food is ready. With a half dozen people ahead of me, I still had to wait 15 minutes for my order to be ready. I'm not sure where the slow down is, as I could see all the orders lined up and waiting to be packaged. Unfortunately, my burrito was lukewarm and the flavors uninspiring. I'll go there again if I'm in the neighborhood, so I can try their breakfast burrito (get there before 11am). read more

Went there not knowing what to expect, but the "anti-nit-picky" signage by the menu and the simplicity of the menu left something to the imagination. Expected short and snappy remarks judging from the vibe and signage, (think Chubby's do's and dont's signs everywhere) as they took our order, but they were incredibly friendly (albeit slow at the time). Simple, good and cheap. We got two combo plates and each was better than the last. Chili was good (got the mix of mild and hot, going to get hot next time), Tamales and Rellenos were FANTASTIC. FYI: Its called the Curtis Park Creamery because the name was grandfathered in when they took over the space 42 years ago and they just never changed the name. So if your going for ice cream you'll be disappointed but pleasantly surprise with great Mexican food! Not ice cream as originally thought, but Mexican food in my neighborhood?! Awesome! Went and loved it even more: great service, really friendly staff, delicious food! You can't really ask for more! Had the green chili tamale, bean burrito and chili rellano and they were filling, extremely cheap and I felt like I was part of a cool club of people who actually knew what this place was. Of course, if you're looking for a fancy joint, I can imagine you've already figured out that you should go elsewhere - this place is the real deal. It's a great place to just grab and go, as a lot of the other reviews mention, it doesn't have a place inside to sit, but there is Curtis Park right across the street, so you can just grab a spot to eat on a nice day. It's filling and tasty - I'd go here the morning following a fun night out, or just for a nice afternoon of delsh Mexican food! Highly recommended. read more

Ain't nothing bad about my neighborhood Mexican takeout joint. Its fast, its cheap and it tastes good. So I can't complain. I haven't eaten here more than once so this review is purely based on the tasty not smothered burrito I ordered. It was hot and delicious. The (i think) mild green chilli sauce wasn't too spicy, but had just enough kick to flavor up the basic base of meat, beans, tomato, lettuce and cheese. Service was fast and friendly. I really want to rave about this place because it's got a lot of character, is very tucked away, the workers were so nice, and it has been around for a long, long time. MAYBE... And I hope that's the case, MAYBE, I had a bad day. I got three tamales to test out for Christmas, and they were just okay if you're going to compare them to the talent that's out there. There isn't much variety here, they're pretty small, and certainly don't hit the taste that others have. I had the green.
