I was in the Westwood area and decided to stop in for lunch after a shop owner recommended it, and I do love Frida Kahlo. This restaurant commits to a theme--Frida photos of the artist and replicas of her artwork adorn the walls. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. Their ice machine was not working, so we were unable to get iced tea or soda (they do not serve alcohol). Food was not bad. I tried a huarache for the first time. I needed to add a little more salt to my plate (something I usually don't do). The green chile was good, but it could have used a bit more spice. read more

We had such a great experience at Kahlos! There are about 5 dedicated parking spots right outside the restaurant, and plenty of street parking nearby, which made it super convenient. The place has such fun vibes with lots of cool art and photo ops throughout. We ordered the guacamole, chips and salsa, enchiladas plazeras , sope, and churros--and everything was packed with flavor. Tons of vegetarian options too, which we really appreciated! As someone coming from California, i was hesitant to even try Mexican food here. I can confidently say this is now my favorite Mexican spot in Denver. Big shoutout to Eric for his warm recommendations and fantastic service--he truly made our meal even more enjoyable! The food and service here is always spot on. Never disappointed, and we will be back more often now that we live closer. There's a lot of family-owned Mexican restaurants around Denver, and none have as much freshness and flavor. LOVED this place! I would have shared photos of the food but it was so delicious it was gone in an instant. The steak enchiladas with a tomatillo sauce and red sauce was so yummy. The fresh, homemade salsa was so addicting and flavorful. My favorite part was how great their menu was for a gluten free eater. So many items marked GF, Vegan, Vegetarian and they are welcoming and knowledgeable about GF which can be a rarity. The interior is amazing with so many Frida Kahlo works on display. Absolutely empty for lunch on a Thursday. Walked in to the fragrance of sewer and Pinesol. Okay, so not the best first impressions. We sat as far away from the restroom as possible. Our server was very patient and kind. My colleague was a vegan so we were pleased to see many options on the menu and actually I recommended the nopales tacos for my colleague. She had never had cactus before and she was pleasantly surprised how delicious they were. My carnitas tacos were bad either but the rice was flavorless and the beans too runny for my liking. I've been going to Kahlos more often lately to help support them after their sister restaurant, Terascos was closed from a car hitting their building (I live in the other side of town). So far, everything I've tried is excellent! The spinach enchiladas, the 7 chilies chicken mole, and my favorite out of everything so far is the red chili beef tamal plate! Pretty disappointed. We've eaten here about a dozen times and it's historically been pretty good with nice vegan options, but the last couple of times have been "meh" at best. The restaurant has been empty on our recent visits and we've had to call back to someone for a table. No big. Despite being the only diners, the service has been neglectful at best. Each time we've had to seek the server out for refills and the check. The last time we visited, my daughter noticed they had suiza sauce with another item on the menu and we asked our server for a side of this for her flautas. It was well worth the extra 5-$6 since they brought a nice sized to go container of it w her meal and she was able to enjoy for a few days after. This time we asked our server for a side of the sauce (it was the only reason we drove all this way to Kahlo's) and the server looked at us like we were speaking another language. It's in YOUR menu, you should know what we're talking about. We pointed at it in the menu, she shook her head yes in understanding then went off to order. The food came out with no suiza sauce. We asked about the sauce and again she looked at us like we were from another planet. We both work in restaurants and our Spanish is pretty good. We even used google translate to make sure she understood. She argued that the sauce comes on another dish, to which we are aware, which is why we asked for it to be special ordered and were willing to pay extra. She said no, then disappeared into the back. The food is sub par and the portions are not filling for the prices. The horchata is like chunky oatmeal. The chips are stale. The service is disappointing. I ordered the sopes and bean and cheese dip appetizer. The appetizer came out, and the chips were different than the first batch, yet they were also stale!! Kahlo's is one of Denver's best kept secrets. It's never busy when we go and we've always had a wonderful experience. Food: I always like to try something different here and I've never been disappointed. I've had the Mole Enchiladas, Rojas Enchiladas, Birria (Mexican stew with 15 ingredients), Carne Asada, and just last night I had the Huaraches (masa). I get the horchata almost every time, and when I don't get the horchata, I get one of their fresh juices or smoothies. This place is also known for their vegan options! Every server we've ever had has been welcoming and such a pleasure. Last night they had live entertainment which was an added treat to our date night! The restaurant is colorful and vibrant, and photos/art of Frida Kahlo adorn the walls - hence the name. Parking: there's a small little lot that holds about 5 cars, but there's plenty of street parking either on Morrison road or one of the side streets. We've never had an issue finding a spot to park. One thing to note: they do not serve alcohol, so if you're looking for a marg, you won't find it here. This place also has a large high top table that can fit about 10 people, and like I mentioned before, it has never been busy when we went so there's plenty of options to accommodate larger groups. read more

Amazing!! We were at an event an got hungry. I popped on Yelp and found this gem!! Super cute, chill and in the neighborhood I grew up in. I ordered Mole 7 Chiles with carnitas. The sauce was incredible and it came with sesame seeds which I've never heard of. The plate came with rice and it had a fried rice flavor to it which just complimented the entire mole plate. What a missed opportunity to have special Kahlo margaritas or specialty drink. The food was bland and the bean soup was just a bowl of refried beans. Went there one snowy evening based on a recommendation. There were only a few people in the place and so we sat and had our order taken quickly. My second visit first review. Found this amazing gem by accident and was so glad I went in to give it a try. First, it is named Kahlo's for a reason that is abundantly clear when you walk in to walls full of photos and artwork of hers. The decor is simple yet cozy. Quiet ambiance with music playing at the perfect level to hear it and your dinner mates with ease. Friendly, fast service and salsa and chips in front of me before I made it through the appetizer menu. Salsa is as I recall from my first visit; very finely minced veggies and perfectly smoky and hot. Being vegetarian was no worries here as they have an extensive vegan menu that does not disappoint. So many options and not boring, run of the mill standards. Nope! Please try the 7 chile mole. It is not award winning for nothing. It is outstanding. Smoky, hints of molasses come through and so satisfying. I had plenty left to bring home for topping breakfast with. The rice is served very plainly with simple peas, corn, and carrot and in this type of dish, that is how I want it. A complement to the mole as it should be. Fresh, hot corn tortillas come along with this dish and they were very well prepared, soft and thin. The salty lemonade was my drink of choice tonight~sounded too good to pass up and it did not disappoint. Can't even really describe it properly but, now I am on the hunt for recipes to do this at home. On a hot day, this would be my go to. Finally, ordered churros for dessert with the little pocket of space I had left. Simply done, with minimal amount of chocolate and berry sauce on the top and side. For me, this was just enough and the my were not overly sweet - win win!!! Nice crunch and no greasiness at all. Perfect way to end the meal. The check comes to you in a book with the pages cut out to allow your bill and card to sit inside nicely. Very clever touch. The chef greeted me as I left as that is always a welcome s experience. Cannot say enough to convey what an amazing experience we had here. The food was delicious clean and so much fun to eat. The atmosphere was calm, eclectic and visually very appealing. There are beautiful flowers painted on the ceiling with lights as the center bud. When u come in you are given chips and salsa.. the salsa is delicious hits all the right flavor and spice notes.. the chips are wonderfully crispy not overly salted and not at all greasy. We were given water and a nice slim jug was also delivered in case we needed more. There are fresh fruit waters about 10 offered and they also offer Mexican cokes, bottled sangria and tamarind soda, fresh horchata and jamiaca juice and there is a smoothie option as well.. the size of the smoothie is quite generous and it was very tasty. They also offer fountain drinks. Sadly no cocktail options but with the food being so great you don't miss it. Dessert did not disappoint and I even took food to go for my son. All in all delicious and fun. Best dining experience in Denver so far and I'm 4 years in. I know Mexican places are not known for salads but 14.00 for a plate of shredded chicken does not qualify as a salad anywhere. Probably the worse paid for meal i can remember. Absolutely terrible. We came in after the place being mentioned by a couple friends. I ordered the tamale for my daughter and the carne asada for myself. The tamale (elote) was as sweet as a dessert and my daughter - who is a huge fan of tamales- hated it. I thought it was gross as well. I told the waitress my daughter couldn't eat it and she apologized and said she should have mentioned how sweet it was. She took the food away and never offered to bring anything else so my kiddo ate the beans off my plate. My carne asada was CHEWY. Almost inedible, I couldn't even put it in a tortilla because my teeth couldn't rip it apart. No wanting to complain twice I ate it in small pieces I cut with my knife. Then the bill came $45! I asked the waitress if she was going to charge me for the tamale that we couldn't eat. She got mad and said "was something wrong with it?!" - "um yes, we couldn't eat it. And nothing else was offered. My kid is still hungry." She said no she wasn't going to do anything about it. So, if you want to pay $50 for a meal you won't enjoy, check it out. Terrible. read more
