Debra Alexander is a scam artist and can be vindictive. I went to see her for contacts in December 2025 because I wasn't given a contact exam during my regular visit. I wasn't aware that a contact visit was separate because my eye doctor in CT always did both at my yearly visit. When I came in I had my eye exam and ordered my box of contacts. Then I came back in March for my regular yearly exam. Before I came in I received many messages telling me to wear my contacts at the visit. I thought why should I? I already had my eyes checked for contacts. When Alexander came in the exam room there were no pleasantries and she just immediately sat down and started asking me how my vision was and she put the letters on the wall. She changed the letters and each time I could not see them at all. I immediately panicked because I couldn't see anything and she had flipped the letters many times. I thought I drove here and could see fine and I was sitting in the lobby reading on my phone just fine. I didn't know what was wrong with me that I couldn't see. When I asked questions, but she didn't answer she just kept on with her test. When she was done she said I had a different prescription in both eyes and that I would need two new different boxes of contacts. She had me take out my new contacts I had just worn to the office and throw them away. I refused to do that so she gave me a case to put them in and I put her contacts in she was prescribing me. I told her they were uncomfortable. She wanted me to try them for a few days and let her know as soon as possible if I liked them so I could bring my other prescription contacts in. She then took me out to the front to place an order with the tech. Mean while as I'm trying to keep up with her I'm thinking wait a minute when am I going to be checked for glasses? I wanted to use my insurance for glasses. I tried to ask her but she went back in the technician office and she said she would be back. I hoped then I would get a chance to say I want to use my insurance for my new prescription for lenses. I didn't even want to change my frames because she doesn't have a good selection or very many choices of glasses for women. The glasses selection cater more to men. The tech came out and I asked her if the doctor was coming out and she told me no and that she was seeing her next patient. Alexander told me she would be right back. The tech started talking to me about the contacts and placing my order. I was very confused and frustrated and I told the tech I feel very scammed. I told her I had just come in the office and had my eyes checked in December how is it my eyes dramatically changed in a few months and now I'm going to need two new boxes(a different prescription for each eye), which is going to cost me even more money and these are not the same brand and they probably cost more because they were a contact that dealt with stigmatism and bifocals. I told the tech I didn't come in to have my eyes check for contacts. She said well it's because it says in your records that I complained that I should have had my eyes checked for contacts during my yearly visit. I had that conversation on the phone with the receptionist and she explained that they are separate visits. I understood once she explained it but clearly I was being punished and scammed at my yearly visit. I told the tech right then that I felt scammed and that I didn't want to order the new contacts and that I would stay with the contacts that I just received in January. I was happy with them and I wanted to use my insurance for new lenses in my present frames. The tech said she would report my feeling scammed and how I was treated by Alexander to the office manager. I thought to myself what for? She works for her what is she going to do. Once I got my glasses I requested my records so I could go else where. The receptionist told me that she would let Alexander know. I said ok but why can't I just come in and pick up my records. She told me that Alexander needed to look over them and clean them up. I found that very suspicious. Why do they need to be cleaned up. I asked for the last 3 visits and it took 5 days to get them. I went in and picked them up and left. When I got home I looked at them and saw that my December visit was not included. I went back the next business day and requested my records for that visit. They then had to get permission. I told them I wanted the records for the visit but they asked me did I want my contact prescription. I said well yes I want that included but that I wanted all the information on that visit like what I had been given for my other visits and I showed them the records that I had been given. After they talked to Alexander I was only given my contact prescription and not the test records of that visit broken down. How convenient that I wasn't given those records to compare my December visit with my March visit. Very Calculating! read more

Big fan. Was quick and efficient. Dr. Yu was so likable and super frank. Did not try to push glasses on me but was honest they might help with my night driving if I decided I wanted them. After hearing I was concerned about price, he made sure his assistants only pulled frames that were covered by my insurance. And he gave me my prescription in case I wanted to go somewhere else. What a guy! His assistant, Manu, was such a gem. Walked around and gave me her opinion on glasses. So happy I came here for my eye needs! I don't like leave bad reviews, I won't say too much other than I'm just not happy with the service and they have a funky way to make appointments. It doesn't work. The ladies that fit the glasses aren't helpful at all, so being new I ended up with some really unattractive frames and the batch that I got last time was crooked. I tried making phone calls to speak to somebody and left messages but they didn't have the personalized service that I was looking for ..... I can't believe they are considered Southbay's best. The only positive thing about this place is Dr. Alexander. I had come to this optometrist late December and received my glasses early January. Though I was excited to receive my new glasses, I was a bit disappointed in how thick the glasses were. In my first visit, I was told I was getting high index glass. But when I picked it up, I was told there was a higher index, and I got the second highest. Now my prescription is quite bad (-5.0), so I was confused as to why it wasn't communicated to me that I was getting the second highest index glass. No worries though, people make mistakes. So I sent it back so I can be given the highest index. I come in today, and the glasses do not look any different. I was told this was the highest index, but they look identical to the last pair I was given. I express my disappointment to the man who was helping me, and he increasingly becomes quite hostile and annoyed. After asking for a refund (because I certainly do not want these glasses, nor deal with this ordeal any longer because at this point I've been waiting on my glasses for a month) and wrapping up the conversation, he walks off in a huff and nearly snatches the glasses cloth I held in my hand. I don't understand why he became so hostile, I was honestly trying my best to be patient and not be a Karen lol :( I really never write reviews like this. Most of the time, with bad experiences, I do not give a flying f. Stuff happens. But I don't understand the lack of communication and empathy from this place. The workers made something that should be so simple, suddenly more complicated than it has to be. My family and I Have been coming here for several years and getting glasses here. We have spent thousands of dollars over the years. I went in two weeks ago to order some glasses. I was told that I had a $150 credit towards my frames from my insurance. I was advised to pick the frames from the manufacturer website so they can order it for me since their inventory was limited. I picked the frame from the manufacturers website and gave them the model. The frames MSRP was $189 and the manufacturer had it on sale for $151. The person who was helping me banged away on a calculator and said $289 for the frames. When I brought it to her attention they they are well over MSRP she said well that's our prices. I asked if they raise the cost of the frames well above MSRP to eliminate any savings I would get from my insurance coverage and she just smiled and said I'm sorry. I asked to speak to the owner and the gentleman at the front told me to speak to the manager who I later found out was the front desk manager. She told me she would speak with the owner and have him get back to me. No response for a week so I called back to let them know I was still waiting and the gentleman who answered the phone told me to speak to the office manager who I have since learned was still the front desk manager. Again I was told someone would get back to me. No response again so I call back and asked to speak to the owner - I was told to speak to the office manager to which I replied no thank you and that I would like to speak to the owner, he refused, told me to speak to the manager and then placed on a twenty minute hold which gave me ample time to write this review before I gave up and hung up. Just when I thought this review was done... I get a call from someone named Charlotte* who said she was the office manager. this was what she said 1. She first claimed VSP sets the price / markup - when I said that's odd and that I will check with VSP she changed her answer 2. She then said we can charge whatever we want and don't have to go by the companies suggestion. So I asked if it's ok with VSP for them to mark up the prices to almost double, and dilute my insurance benefits and she said yes because we markup all our glasses. 3. She the. claimed that I had called to talk to her and complain how they ripped me off. when in fact I have been trying to reach the owner for the last three weeks and they refused to allow me to speak to him. When I said I did not ask to speak with her and that I wanted to reach the owner, she tells me that I can call tomorrow "to tell the owner how horrible we are and how we ripped you off" in the most condescending and disrespectful tone possible. I mentioned that I will take necessary actions I see fit including reaching out to VSP and reviewing the business on yelp and She finished with you can write a negative review on yelp, people write negative reviews, or call VSP and complain because we can charge what we want etc. I work in a customer oriented business and I have to be honest, if this manager is what my clients had to deal with when they had an issue, I would close my business down. Till today, I have never had the misfortune of being so disrespected and actually mocked by someone who is responsible for managing a business. read more

Dr Yu is great at explaining and answering my many questions about eyes. Staff is also great at doing & explaining the routine pre-exam eye tests. Wrote me several versions of my glasses prescription, so I have choices. Regular daily bi-focals for reading, driving bi-focals with lower part focused at dashboard distance, and single vision computer glasses. They have a lot of high-tech wazoo equipment that makes the exam more accurate. That's great. read more

I have been a client of Dr. Yu's for several years. Even after I moved to a city an hour away, I would still use this office. And now, after moving to Texas, I STILL fly to LA to see Dr. Yu. I trust him and don't want to go to anybody else. I have been to multiple Optometry offices over the years as I have relocated quite a bit for work and also am very near-sighted and have an astigmatism. Changing eye doctors is a hassle when you have a long eye history and you have a lot of files to transfer over. The last eye doctor I went to was not familiar with my type of nearsightedness and astigmatism, and that's when I returned to Dr Yu. Dr Yu is very experienced and he goes over and beyond to research the latest options and to provide me with alternative solutions due to poor eyesight and limited options. During the quarantine, Dr Yu and his staff emailed me to address all my questions and needs. When my current contacts were about to be discontinued, Dr Yu noticed me over 6 months out just too start planning ahead. I recommend this Optometry place. Dr. Do is simply the best. I have been seeing him for almost 20 years. I've sent my friends and family to see him as well. He is personable, friendly, and really cares about his patients. Recently I noticed a change in my eyesight, and he saw me right away. It turned out one my retinas was torn. When my PCP lagged and didn't get me the approval I needed, Dr. Do stepped in. He connected me with another doctor that saw to my care. He stayed in touch with me checking to make sure I got the care I needed, even texting me before he went on a family vacation to make sure I was OK. I have came to this location for years and it gets better! Their service is amazing-very friendly staff. They help you in every way. If you're on a budget and try to get the best glasses for its price, they help you and recommend certain glasses. I was considering getting glasses from Costco but they said they hear customers saying Costco doesn't make glasses well or something like that. I forgot what they said so I sticked with their glasses. Dr. Yu is very nice and I recommend him as your doctor. Very friendly personality and helps you get the best prescription and doesn't sugarcoat any bad news! I checked in here using Yelp and my screen popped up saying I can redeem free cleaning solution for glasses and a micro fiber cloth. I didn't know they offer this! They really want to stand out and it's great way treat customers well! they said if I show them my Yelp review I get free chocolate. Horrible customer service... One of the workers behind the desk distributing mail was very very sick coughing & yacking up her lungs. I made an appointment here last month and today would be my first time going here. We waited a bit for them to get off lunch, and more people arrived. When the door finally opened, a lady told us to come in one by one without asking who was there first. While I got up to go inside, the lady closed the door on me. If I hadn't walked so fast toward the door it would've slammed on me. I made appointments for my daughters and I but the lady rudely told me it was only for me. I've worn glasses since the 4th grade, so I've been to more than my fair share of optometrists all around the world and I can say with confidence that this is The Best place I've ever been to! The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to picking out the right frame and lenses for any purpose, especially Lety. She's assisted me to find the right goggles for my Vespa, the perfect glasses for sitting in front of a computer all day, and the best sunglasses for being on the open water. Occasionally I'll stumble upon glasses when I'm out & about and whether I have the model number or just describe them I know the staff will help me find them. Even better, they'll order them and let me come try them on before I actually make a commitment. Dr. Alexander is a fantastic optometrist! I have been coming to Torrance Optometry since I was a teenager, but this specific review is for Dr. Alexander. This was my daughters first time with an eye doctor (she's 5), we were greeted by awesome staff at the front. While I filled out some paperwork, they quickly said Frankie's name and she went to start the examination (my mother went with my daughter while I finished the paperwork). My daughter freaked out a little because of that little puff machine that they do first but the girl who was helping us was super sweet and patient. They did a couple other tests then we were seated in the examination room to wait for the Dr. Along comes Dr. Alexander, greeted Frankie like an adult and totally put the focus on her! I loved that. She really knew how to talk to my daughter and got her to explain why she thought she needed to be there. After a couple minutes of conversation with my daughter, Dr. Alexander turns and greets me and talked to me about my concerns. She was extremely informative. She examined my daughters eyes, dilated, and examined again. It was a process and we were there for quite sometime but I expected it. My daughter was able to pick out some really cute ray bans and should be ready in a week. Our experience at Torrance Optometry was exceptional. Dr. Alexander really is amazing at what she does, she was so sweet to my daughter and I and explained everything in terms that was fully understandable. We are in the process of correcting my daughters eye, so we will be coming here frequently and that doesn't bother me one bit. read more

The people at the front desk are very helpful, and nice. However, if you come here I highly recommend against seeing Debra L Alexander. When she walked in to start my eye exam, in the most aggressive and condescending way possible, she asked "why aren't you vaccinated?" She didn't bother to ask how I was or say hello. She was extremely rude, she's not my primary care doctor and I told her it's none of her business. I won't be coming back here, as this lady doesn't understand people's freedoms to make choices for themselves, and leave it up to medical doctors to address vaccination status. If she wanted to change minds about those that have not yet been vaccinated maybe she can at least say hi to them first; but beyond that, it's not her place to give her opinion, nor is it wanted. I went to the dentist last week, and they didn't ask me about my vaccination status, so why should she? Maybe the other optometrists are okay but if they're anything like Debra I'd highly recommend not going here. read more

This is my first year going from single vision glasses to either bifocals or progressives. Dr. Alexander explained how they work to me (a demonstration) so I understood how my vision had changed. She walked me out to a desk to for someone to help me with lenses, etc. She informed him of my changes and answered a couple of questions that popped into my head. I decided on progressives and probably asked the man helping me three times how they work / properly look through them when changing from driving to stairs to reading, etc. I feel very well informed and not at all upset or old about having to wear progressives. My family had been going to this optometrist for many years. A few years ago when I started needing reading glasses I also came here and received very good service and attention. But the last few visits which have now been a couple of years ago started to decline to the point of me becoming extremely dissatisfied. The problem started with the last pair of progressive lenses I was attempting to get. When the prescription first came back I couldn't see as good as with my old glasses. When I expressed my concern about this, I felt like Dr Yu blamed me for the problem saying that he would adjust the prescription because I didn't LIKE what he made for me. It wasn't that I didn't like it, I simply expected them to give me proper vision. Anyway, they tried again. When I got the new pair I took them to work for the first day and then thought there was a smudge on the lenses. I do graphics work and my vision is extremely important and little blur spots are a big problem. I cleaned and cleaned the section that had the smudge and then I realized there was etched writing right in my field of view! I understand that progressives have writing on them, but the etching blurred my vision where my old ones did not. When I brought this up to the doctor's intern, I was informed that this was just the way they were. I objected and they said they would try it again. When I was given back the new pair, they were etched exactly the same way and had the exact same problem. I was not informed or spoken to about this and I concluded they simply didn't care and were satisfied to blow me off. Well, that is where I decided it was time to take my business elsewhere. Frustration is an understatement! Please take the time to read the 1 star reviews. They're there for a reason and I assure you I WISH I wasn't swayed by the 4 1/2 star rating they unbelievably have. This place deserves zero stars. Myself and my family had been going to the same optometrist for many years and we've always been very happy with them. Unfortunately they relocated so I decided to find a closer optometrist which is how I ended up here. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!! I do the eye test and order my glasses. I pick them up and when I eventually wear em I realize that something is wrong because they make my vision blurry versus clearer. I call the office to explain the situation and the woman that I spoke to kept insinuating that it was me and not an actual error of the lenses. (Ie: I'm sure YOU FEEL that it's blurry because you're not used to it) To which I would have to reiterate that it's not about how I feel. If the glasses make my vision worse, that's a fact not a "feeling" I end up coming in to see the Dr again to sort this out. I kid you not this Dr ends up saying the same thing to me. At some point I even tell her stop saying that to me. This has nothing to do with the way I feel. Long story short....my glasses were sent in to get remade. 2 weeks go by and I call to find out what's going on. Apparently the lab messed up and they have to remake them again. Ok that's twice now. They said it would be EXPEDITED so after a week I call which is today and guess what?? Lab messed up again. (Number 3 just in case u forgot) and supposedly they're going to expedite it again on the off chance that chance number FOUR is going to work out. I don't trust this lab. I don't trust this office. (And since they're so adamant on how I FEEL).....NEVER AGAIN are they getting my business read more

Having been going to Torrance Optometry for over ten years with no problems. I paid for and received a prescription on 10/12/21 that stated the prescription was valid for 12 months, expiring 11/11/22. Ordered contacts on 10/4/22 and uploaded the valid prescription. When the company contacted Torrance Optometry to validate the prescription, Torrance Optometry denied the prescription indicating the prescription was expired. When I called to understand the issue, they claimed they would not approve the prescription even though it was still valid. Well, no more business from me. I also made sure the two individuals I referred to them will also cease doing business with them. read more

Best eye doctor I've ever been too! The staff in the office are all so nice and have always been super helpful and when they checked my eyes over I actually felt for once I was given the right prescription! Any other eye doctors I have been to I still felt like I couldn't see that well or something felt uncomfortable with my contacts but I left there being able to see clearer than I ever have and with no strains or discomfort on my eyes! Doctor Do is not only attentive to my eyes needs he checked over multiple times to make sure everything was correct and comfortable not to mention he's hilarious and super nice!!!
