My first visit ever at North Torrance Optometry and I'm beyond words of the professional service that I experienced. I had a 4:30 pm appointment and as soon as I walked in, I waited about 3 minutes and they had called my name already. I was greeted by the front desk receptionist Silvia with a welcoming smile! I was then helped out by Micah who performed the preliminary procedures for my eye exam. He was very professional and took the time to explain what each state of the art equipment does. I was then seen by Dr Chad Shimazaki. Awesome optometrist. Very professional and helpful! He took the time to explain what all the results meant from my eye exam. He made me feel like I was part of North Torrance Optometry family already! Lastly, I was able to meet his father Dr Tak Shimazaki, the one who started it all. He was very friendly and welcoming. He was even doing some housekeeping to make sure the office was nice and tidy. Hands down I highly recommend North Torrance optometry to anyone looking for help with their vision. I came in to get my glasses adjusted, which I hadn't purchased from them. I realized I was due for a new pair and they squeezed me in right then. I had an eye exam and got some nice new glasses ordered. They said they'd be ready in about a week or two but they were ready in about 5 days. I'd mentioned to Dr. Chad that my son had recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, so he suggested I get him in for an exam. Everyone was so nice and accommodating to him. He's only 7, so he can be quite fidgety but they made it work! I cant recommend them enough! I have been going to Dr. Shimazaki for a few years now. He's been wonderful at handling my eye exams, contacts, and glasses. I received excellent care each visit with him. In addition, his staff are friendly and helpful. After having my second child, I asked Dr. Shimazaki if I'd be a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery. He referred me to an excellent eye surgeon named Dr. Lusby at Nvision eye centers in Torrance. Dr. Lusby performed the surgery on me in June, and I couldn't have been happier with my current 20/20 vision. Dr Mayeda is amazing!! I've been coming to this office for about 2.5 years and the staff there is amazing. I'm always happy with the service and the ability to get my eye exam done, ask all questions and view frames all in a timely manner. My son had his first eye exam w Dr Mayeda and loved it. This is by far the best optometrist in the Torrance/Gardena area. I wanted new frames and the staff was very informative about what my insurance would cover and how it worked. I chose some really nice Tom Ford frames that I just couldn't resist. I love that they allow you to browse the frames, and they are still close enough that if you need assistance they can come right over. read more

Unfortunately, this office uses sneaky practices to overcharge patients. The doctors here are in-network with my insurance and, as a patient, I only have a small copay for eye exams. However, this office will charge you $39 for an optional back-of-the-eye picture that is not covered by insurance and is not part of a standard eye exam and not necessary for prescription of glasses. The doctor will not inform you that the procedure is optional and unnecessary for prescriptions. As a matter of fact, he will not even inform you that he is performing the procedure. He will squeeze in the picture in the many diagnostic exams that are part of the regular eye exam and then charge you for it at the end of the exam. Buyer beware! read more

Dr Wong was okay but I felt pressured from the staff into getting prescription sun glasses that I didn't need to use the insurance money for the frames. The glasses instantly made me sick and even for hours after wearing them. I was told at the time that I could switch them for non-prescription lenses if they didn't work. I took them back immediately and was then told I could only switch for other prescription lenses and I only had one more chance. The doctor saw me again and tried to prescribe a milder option. However, there's no way to actually test these in sun glasses. So now after paying out of pocket $150 for the polarization, etc, I would be stuck with these new prescription lenses even if they didn't work. When I tried to explain this to the office manager, she basically called me a liar. At that point I just demanded a refund so I could find a new doctor. I have no time for power tripping office managers who have no empathy for their patients' concerns. read more

I have been a customer at North Optometry for years. Unfortunately, I will NOT go back because of their horrible customer service. I ordered two pairs of bifocal glasses- one for computer work, the second were bifocal sunglasses. The computer glasses worked great. The sunglasses, however, had to be returned because the bifocals were not placed correctly and I was seeing double. When I picked them up a second time I told the office I wasn't sure they would work because the glasses slid on my face a bit, which meant I wasn't hitting the bifocal "sweet spot" but I was willing to try them. After trying them for a week, I discovered I could see street signs in the distance better without them. I told the office I was not happy with the lenses and I wanted to return them. I was told I couldn't because they had already been modified. They offered to test my prescription again but I told them I was done trying, I just wanted a refund. They said a refund was against office policy!!! They think it's okay for me to pay $300 for a pair of sunglasses that don't work!! I will NEVER go back. I called my insurance and I can have my prescription filled at another facility at no cost. Thank goodness read more

Great doctor. Recently my vision had worsened for distance vision and for the first time, I needed a reading correction. I did get new glasses for my new prescription but I was confused as to what my reading glasses prescription was. The doctor was kind enough to give me a follow up appointment for no additional charge to double check my reading prescription and explain a few things to me about my eyesight. During covid19 could not use my optometrist. Found North Torrance was open and took a chance. It was a good, wise choice. Good service. Knowledgeable staff. Decent prices for frames. One thing to note they know their frames. I have been using plastic frame glasses for a while. My problem is they don't stay in place since I sweat a lot. Glasses literally slide off my face. They showed me a frame that has a modified bridge you could only get with wire frames. Now in plastic I not only get my prescriptions here but now I have frames that literally fit my face. read more

Update: being older now, I have more demands with my vision. This time, Dr. Chad provided an exam for computer glasses, working in tandem with my left eye's lens implant and a distance contact in my right eye. I could see the computer screen without glasses after the cataract surgery, but developed crushing headaches, the cause so far undetermined. The only difference was the absence of dedicated prescription computer eyeglasses (with blue-light blocking and glare protection), a staple in my wardrobe for decades. I picked up the glasses and the images are crisp. (Also, the office was able to order a specific frame I'd wanted - YAY!) Thank you, Dr. Chad and North Torrance Optometry! read more

Dr. Chad was my optometrist for my annual exam. He has been my doctor for the past 3 years and I have no complaints. He sits down and explains each diagnostic procedure and begins to break it down to my specific case. I've recently transitioned from glasses to contacts because of my profession and was really apprehensive about it. Dr. Chad was able to explain in detail how to maneuver through using contacts, how to clean them properly, and when to replace them. The staff also allowed me to practice taking them on and off while I was still in the office. When the specific brand of contacts wasn't working for me, Dr. Chad was able to listen to my reasons and modified the brand accordingly. Now I'm completely smitten with wearing contacts. I can't say more good things about this optometrist office. The wait is never long, they send reminders regarding your appointment, and the entire staff are really friendly. I was here back in January , walked in and ask the counter person, that I was told by my health insurance that they take VSP. The lady said, that she never heard of that insurance , rolled her eyes and walked away. I have not being treated like this since, I was down South! I have been going to NTO for a few years now. Dr Chad and the staff are the best! From technical questions to emergency visits to routine exams, NTO is beyond accommodating and professional. I work for the City of Torrance and have referred several employees to them. Recently, I purchased a pair of prescription safety glasses from NTO and they are WONDERFUL! I found this place via Yelp so THANK YOU Reviewers! I haven't had vision insurance since I was a kid and just been going to clinics and paying out of pocket the last few years. Once I got insurance I was like okay now I have to find a place and I'm glad that I ended up coming here! The entire staff and Dr. Mike were super helpful and accommodating. They walked me through the process and helped me pick out frames. I ended up getting two pairs and one with transition lenses. When I came to pick them up they adjusted the sizing so they fit even better. I have another appointment this week to dilate my eyes but there is also an option to take a retina picture if that suites you better. read more

So out of the 5yrs of coming here I don't know why I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt. I got one good pair of glasses and that's the only reason I went back after. I've ordered contacts and they were always off and the reason given was it just takes time to adjust. My prescription has gotten worse but my contact number continues to lower not get higher. I went from a 4.25 to a 3.75 and that's normal for me not to see clearly. My brand new glasses I ordered this past December are no better than my old ones that are 4 years old. I've asked to use frames I've had as a backup and have been told no even though I'm paying and taking liability. Another thing I was called and reminded of an appointment I did not schedule and told there is a $25 no show fee. Interesting especially since I wasn't the one to schedule the appointment in the first place. I'm glad others have had great experiences but I continued coming here out of the convenience.
