For the second year I scheduled Torres to come do tree trimming at my home. I scheduled well in advance, a month ahead of time to work into their schedule and mine. Then they sent me an email the next week that they had changed the scheduled date to the following week, arriving between 7:30 am and 12:30. So I had to rearrange my weekend travel plans to accommodate them changing my reserved date. They never called to confirm and never showed up. I called them the morning they were scheduled at 9:00 am to confirm they were coming. After hearing a long excuse about why their workers didn't show up they said they would call back later to confirm a time. This happened last year too - when they said an employee had a baby so the crew would have to come later in the day. I never heard from them all morning so at 12:30 we left for our weekend travel. Just before 1 they called to say the crew would be there in 45 minutes. I said nope we already left. So the woman just said ok, bye. Not oh we are so sorry, can we reschedule? Also last year the workers set their equipment on my driveway and spilled fuel all over that stained the pavement Bottom line folks - not a dependable or reputable company. Their website is clear, their online appointment form is easy to use, they call you back right away to confirm your appointment... but then they don't show up. This has happened twice and in neither instance have I received any kind of notification, explanation, or apology. They just don't show up. First time I used this company over a year ago, the services was great but this time around, it was horrible. I called them for three days straight just to set an appointment and after I was able to get ahold of someone, they forgot to send me the contracts via email twice. So it took me one week to just set an appointment. After the appointment was set, they didn't show up to my place. I called them the day of and no one answered all day or called me back. Then this asshole David Torres had the nerve to email me with an update that they are coming the following day. No sorry, no call. After I replied back to him stated that I already got another company and they lost my business, they still showed up to my house. I am very pleased with Torres Tree Service. They were fast and efficient. They took down a Benjamin Ficus that had grew over two stories tall. I had to get rid of it because the branches were encourching on my neighbor's property and the tree looked more like a safety hazard for surrounding properties. I first hired Torres Tree Service to remove a tree in my front yard that had grown so tall, it was twice the height of my single story home. They removed the roots and it hasn't grown back in the last 9 years. Fast forward to today and they came to trim a backyard tree that had started to approach the same out of control growth. The owner was able to give me quotes based on photos I submitted both times (this month and almost a decade ago!), which was very convenient for me. He is well versed in what type of tree his service will be working on just based on the photos. His correspondence was very polite and cordial. The price is very reasonable. I recall the last time I waited around a long time but this time, they were very prompt, even showed up early. Communication was very good every step of the way. These guys are real pros. I had used a friend of a friend for years who always flaked, came late, or did a half a$$ job. When he flaked three times in a row I found Torres tree service on yelp and was so glad I used them. The estimator came out and explained the issues to my wife, scheduled the job a few days later. When you get a detailed invoice e-mailed to you for an electronic signature you know you are dealing with people who take their business seriously, and just to be clear this wasn't a major project, just two trees in my small backyard. The day we were scheduled came and there was wind and heavy rain. They called first thing in the morning to let us know it wouldn't be safe for their crew and would re-schedule. A few days later the work was done quick by a friendly crew and price was the same as I was paying with the other guy but the service was so much more complete and professional. They also made sure any branches that went into my neighbors yard were picked up before they left. Read past reviews: they are TRUE. This company is so unprofessional and flake on their appointments . I called in to have my tree branches hauled away on Saturday. They told me to email pictures so they could give me an estimate which I did. They emailed me back with a quote and a date and time which I agreed to. On the day of the appointment, I call in because they are a no-show. Receptionist first says "they couldn't find my appointment". I tell her to check her email. She then gives the excuse that it's "raining and none of the crew showed up" I said that was ridiculous. Finally she settles on a good enough excuse (third times a charm right?) - I didn't sign the agreement on time and when I signed it it was Sunday at 10 and they don't work on Sundays. These guys did a fantastic job making my big dumb carrotwood tree look like a sculpture! It was crazy overgrown and growing out of every limb, overpowering my front lawn. I showed the crew that came out a picture of what I wanted it to look like....and an hour later it was even better! My neighbors for 20+ years even came over to compliment the look of the tree! Waking up to multiple chainsaws at 7am on a Saturday morning is not a pleasant experience. This is exactly what happened to our neighborhood this morning. When confronted and asked to wait until at least 8am, the workers at Torres laughed in our faces and just made more noise. They were inconsiderate, rude, and upset the entire neighborhood. The head office was called and nothing was done about it. All the neighbors called the police and by the time the police arrived it was already 8am and the workers had finished. Update at end of review~~ 08/30/2011 This review is truthful, is based in fact, and is in full accordance with California Code of Civil Procedure 425.16(a) At 7:30 am the workers took the padlock off of our rear gate, broke into our yard and fired up their chainsaws. It's a good thing the dogs were inside the house or they would have been let out. If they knocked, we didn't hear them, and neither did the dogs. However, rather than have their office call us for access, they chose to break into our yard. Imagine our surprise - Oh yes! We were home! It took me an hour to repair the gate after they left. They sent a three man crew, none of whom spoke English. We don't hire non-communicative workers! If we had wanted to to do so, Home Depot is just up the road. They absolutely MUTILATED our beautiful 100+ year old, 30ft Fruitless Mulberry tree. The workers ignored everything we said and revved up their chainsaws to drown us out when we tried to communicate with them - not that they understood what were were saying anyway. One of the workers, Pedro, actually told my elderly mother to shut up! David was extremely apologetic, but apologies won't fix the damage done. That will take years. We have been promised that they will send an "arborist" to examine our tree. We'll see. Made 2 attempts to schedule appointments for quotes but both times were no shows. David didn't even bother to call back, I called multiple times and emailed but I heard nothing. The office lady did call back in the afternoon of the first no show to reschedule and told me David's dad was ill. Ok, understandable so I rescheduled to next morning at 8:30am. Later on that night I had to run a family member to ER and didn't get home until 4am but I managed to set my alarm to get up at 8am for the appointment. Yes, you guessed it; he didn't show. I called the office and left a message but this time no one even bother to call back. Till this day I haven't heard from anyone from Torres. I don't think they valued people's time and probably have way too much business than they can handle so they really don't need your business. I don't care how cheap they are or how good they are but if they are not professional enough, you are better off taking your business elsewhere. By the way, I am a returned customer. They first job they did for me was a big job ($3500+) and that was a good experience. The second one was a smaller job and they canceled and rescheduled me the morning of the job and that was crummy. Very disappointing!!! Just like every other yelp reviewer has mentioned, their professionalism has gone down the drain! I used them back in 2012, to have two large ficus and an olive tree trimmed. They came on time, ave me a reasonable estimate, did a decent job, and cleaned up after themselves- no problems. This year, I called them back for an estimate and the job. They scheduled me for 9:30 appointment on a friday- At 8:05, their office calls and claims that David is stuck at a job and wont be able to make it in at 9:30. Really, if they start their jobs at 8am, how could he be stuck at a job in 10min? Suspicious already. Rescheduled for a monday at 9:30- NO SHOW! At 10:30, after waiting for an hour, I called to office, to find out if he was coming, and Darlene, who is a very sweet receptionist, responds that David is stuck in a job again!...REALLY! Its bad enough, that they rescheduled me twice, but its even worse, when they don't have the courtesy or professionalism to notify a customer, if they are not going to show up!!! I've written about this company before, happily giving them a 4-star rating, but after my past experience, I'm dropping that rating down to a 2.5. I'll sequence my review based on the events that led to the star demotion. What does appointment mean to you? It's an arrangement to meet/show-up somewhere at a particular time. Torres scheduled one of these "appointments" with me on a Saturday "approximately 1:30PM". What does "approximately" to you mean? To me, within 30 minutes or so (otherwise a phone call is due explaining why they will be late). To Torres, that Saturday, it meant at least 1.5 hours without calling to indicate that their other job was running late and that they would not show up that day. I ended up calling the foreman of the team, that was going to come to my place. During the call he made it seem as though he had no idea that he had another appointment (at my house). After hearing me out, our phone connection dropped and he wouldn't answer any calls afterward. Missing an appointment and not calling, not good. I called the Torres business manager, Darlene to inquire about why the team hadn't showed up yet and she said that they were working on a job (quite far away) that was taking longer than expected and that they will not show up. She rescheduled me for a Tuesday, to which I commented, "just get it done any time that day and do not ring the doorbell asking for payment, I will call in the payment". I stressed that last point twice. I didn't want anyone disturbed at the house. Darlene said that she would convey that message. So after not showing up on Sat, they arrived some time on the following Tuesday and completed the work as expected, trimming two trees. The quality of the work done is what you would expect from any tree trimming service (no better or worse). After the work was done, they moved several things out of the way in the backyard without restoring them to their original positions leaving my backyard in a bad state. Moved a picnic table that I found pushed onto a garden hose (that fortunately didn't break) along with a few other heavier items. There was certainly enough clearance for them to do the work without needing to move my yard furniture. Not good. One of my plants was damaged, that was immediately beneath one of the trees that was trimmed, so they weren't careful. Damaging existing plants and/or trees during service and not telling me about it, not good. Finally, they did not listen and proceeded to hound my family for payment once the work was completed (I wasn't home). This company just does not trust their customers to pay a day after service has been completed and seems to expect you to be home at the time the service is being done so they can collect their payment. Hounding us for payment immediately after service after we agreed to settle the bill over the phone, not good. I advise that everyone who uses Torres to inspect the work done first before remitting payment. Overall, Torres has issues with logistics, ever since I've worked with them from day one. They do not convey your "words" to their field staff. If you must work with this company, get everything in writing and make sure that you photograph everything on your property where you think they'll be working. Will they show for your appointment? Who knows, it's like Las Vegas with these guys. So I'll end this review with a question, like I did my last review... would I use Torres again for my tree-trimming needs? No. They're probably growing too fast which is why they don't know how to manage their staff and expectations while on site. read more

The Torres Crew were a Very good team. I worked for a tree guy in Northern California for 7 years and I learned things from the Torres crew that were awesome. And they did a great job until... The stump grinding. I think they did a not first-class job grinding the stumps. And the cleanup was terrible even after they came out the second time to clean up. The whole purpose of having a tree company do it is it is supposed to look like there was nobody there after they have left. There should be no evidence that they were ever there when they are done. Other than the cleanup and not completely grinding All of the Roots the Torres guys were great. And it looks like from the repeated reviews about not showing up on Yelp, they have some serious issues to figure out. I don't know how a business simply doesn't show up for a scheduled service, am I crazy to assume that this is not an unusual happenstance? I mean, we did sign a contract and everything saying what day and time they would be here, but no one showed up, no one returned my calls, nothing. Oh wait, someone did show up, only 8 hours later. I should have taken this first hint. We had an appt. scheduled IN WRITING ON A SIGNED CONTRACT for the crew to show up at 7:30 AM to cut down our tree. We were ready. Our neighbor was ready. They didnt show up at 7:30 AM, and after calling several times, I didn't get a call back until AFTER the appt. time (7:30AM-12:30PM), citing phone and internet issues. I have a feeling they use this excuse all the time. The crew did show up until 8 hours AFTER the appt. time. Part of the service was for the crew to repair the sprinkler if they broke it in the process. That didn't happen. They just capped the sprinkler. They did not fix it. We had to call again to schedule an appt. for the crew to come out again and actually fix the sprinkler some time this past Saturday. It is now Tuesday, and they have not showed, nor have I received a call back from ANYONE. This is EXTREMELY RUDE. Their customer service is nil. They obviously have no consideration of their customers' time, or our surrounding neighbors' time. We had such a good experience that we called and retained them again for the same scope of work. David said he won't come out to do an estimate as he's already delivered the same scope before. Our appointment was set and canceled at least four times over two weeks (a couple of them were related to a wind advisory and I accept that). His team arrived, did a great job with the trees they did trim but refused to do all of the work. Reason being, it wasn't on their paper that described the job. So, lesson learned, we need to scrutinize the paper they emailed us ahead of time, not expect them to be on time, and expect to pay way more for less work. Won't be using them again. read more

I needed 4 tall palm trees removed, and called Torres again because of my great experiences from the past. Getting an appt for an estimate was easy, and when David didn't show up on time, I called the office again and the lady (sorry didn't get your name) said she would see where he was and get back with me. She called me back in a couple of minutes to say he was driving back from San Diego and would be there shortly. David came and gave me a great estimate for the removal of the palms including the roots. He followed up his quote with an email of the contract, as well as copy of his license and insurance. All communications with David and his office has been courteous and professional, which I really appreciate. The crew, however, was fairly rude and unprofessional (maybe I just got a bad crew this time). They wouldn't remove 2 of the palm roots, covered it up with "mulch" and left the place messy. They then argued with me and called me "honey" when I pointed it out to them. Not til I called the office to complain and got the lady at the office to talk with the crew, did they do what they were supposed to. I would have knocked off 2 stars, but gave back 1 star for the lady at the office who intervened and saved the day. Overall, interactions with David and the office was great, and I would still recommend this company... however, I would HIGHLY recommend that you are present for the work, and check the crew's work before they leave to make sure that they do all they need to per your contract. read more

While Torres Tree Service did an admirable job of removing a dozen trees from our property at a very reasonable price, I will likely never use them again simply because they failed to show up for the job on time. My appointment was confirmed for a Wednesday morning, 7:30 AM start in an e-mail from David Torres, yet the crew did not arrive until 3:15 PM! Seriously? Almost 8 hours late! Absolutely ridiculous! My time is valuable and having to use a precious vacation day to sit around my house waiting for the company with whom I had signed a service contract to show up was a complete waste of a day. When the crew failed to arrive by 8:30 AM, I called Torres Tree Service's office to get an update. It was during this call that I was informed that an e-mail had been sent to me the day before confirming my "2:30 PM" appointment. Feeling rather stupid that I had made an error, I checked my e-mail. Sure enough, I did, in fact, receive confirmation that the start time had been moved to 2:30 PM............. One problem, Juanita (the scheduler, I assume) sent the e-mail at 11:16 PM on Tuesday night (the evening before my appointment!!!!!!!!!!) Are you serious, Juanita? After becoming even more angered about their scheduling blunder, I immediately called Torres Tree Service back. Oddly, my call (and follow-up e-mail) went unanswered because they must have seen my name on their caller ID. Suspecting that this may have been the case, I blocked my number and rang them back a minute later. Guess what? Juanita answered! Luckily, after wasting a vacation day, Juanita told me she was "sorry" for the mix up. Her "sorry" really made up for the whole debacle (that was written with a VERY sarcastic tone intended). Instead of a sorry, I would have appreciated Torres Tree Service knocking a few dollars off the total price.... OR..... offering a discount on a future job (neither of which was offered). "Sorry" simply doesn't cut it. Needless to say, arriving to start the job at 3:15 PM meant that the crew did not have enough daylight to properly complete the full-price job. One stump I had paid to have ground out still graces my yard. Last, but not least, my week old paver driveway now has oil stains from the stump grinder..... a permanent reminder of a botched day. We received a very low cost quote, we'd received a few other estimates but I have to say it wasn't the amount of the estimated that sold us, it was the presentation. I loved that he had his insurance and bonding paperwork with him. My trees were in the power lines so I need someone with insurance and knew what they were doing. I was completely satisfied, actually 5 stars just isn't enough. They showed up early and did the job well under the time they quoted. Very professional, cleaned up everything. I did a lot of estimates from a lot of different tree services. I needed to get a large tree trimmed, and another large tree either removed or stumped. I got estimates from $550 to over $2000. Do your research people! So I started to see a pattern. Some guys were dressed unprofessionally with dirty clothes and writing estimates on back of business cards or scrap paper. On the other hand, some were dressed in an uniform and gave me a proper clear itemized carbon estimates, but they were always more expensive. TORRES! They were the perfect blend of the two. They weren't the absolute cheapest, but they were pretty close. However, more than that, he arrived promptly, was in a clean white Torres shirt and wrote out a clear estimate on a Torres form. The professionalism and just the general feel made me go with them. Oh, of course, the price. They were punctual, quick, clean and did everything stated with minimal disruption to anything in my backyard. I couldn't be happier with their service. I would definitely use them again...and I am. I had to cut down a queen palm tree in my back yard. I told about 5 vendors to email me a quote. Torres was the only one that emailed me a quote in about a week. He also included his liability insurance. And it was only about $265 plus getting the stump removed. We scheduled a time via email. He came out, I didn't even watch them do the job. And I came home, the tree was gone. Done. Billing time comes around and things got really messy really quick. When I first called, the amount quoted to me over the phone was less than what the signed proposal was. Also, this entire time, I kept asking about the Yelp discount. It turns out David was reluctant to give me the discount because I didn't mention it prior to signing the proposal. I was caught off guard that one could be so technical over a Yelp discount. After some back and forth, David agreed to honor the 5% Yelp discount. I would've given 3 stars if he hadn't honored the Yelp discount. Due to the back and forth needed to get the 5% I give 3.5 / 5, and I'll just round it up because I hope he sticks around for my next round of quotes. read more
