Usual Total Wine that has a large selection of beer and wine with a cigar area too if you're looking for those. They can't sell liquor thanks to Virginia's communist laws that restrict liquor sales to state owned ABC stores. The selection of individual bottles/cans of beer isn't as large as some locations but it's alright. They were giving out free samples of something when I was there but it was some mediocre seltzer so it was to too impressed. Parking can be crazy in this shopping center since there are a ton of stores in this place: I'm not too close to this location but so I won't make a special trip to come here but I'll stop by if I'm in the area and need something. read more

I'm a fan of Total Wine & More. They have an immense amount of merchandise, especially wine, obviously. But my review is going to focus on their wine classes. Luckily, I learned about these courses through a Yelp event. Recently I visited this location for a wine and chocolate pairing class. The class was educational and entertaining. Now I actually know a little better on how to pair chocolate and wines. I was surprised they offered small bits to those attending the class like pasta salad, a variety of fruits and vegetables, different selections of cheeses and cold cuts. We tasted eight different pairings. There were definitely some wines that I would not try again, but there were some wines that were excellent in my opinion. Horrible, went in with my sister in law to grab a wine for myself and they said she needed ID WHEN I WAS PURCHASING for me. They then told me she has to have ID because she came in the store but there was no sign saying everyone must be ID. The manager then siad i can't come back in for 24h unless she comes with a ID. IF IT'S YOUR POLICY WHY DOESN'T IT HAVE THOSE DETAIL ON THE DOOR? So if I brought in my daughter I can't buy anything because she has ID. Total Wine (years ago it used to be called Total Beverage) is a supermarket style experience for wine and beer shopping. It's one of the largest stores you'll find filled with alcoholic beverages, plus all of the acoutrements - sodas, mixers, garnishes, glassware, cheese, smoked meats, and so on. One of the reasons I frequent Total Wine is their excellent selection of Virginia Wines. While they don't carry all of them - they have the best selection I've seen outside of attending either Vintage Virginia or the Virginia Wine Festival. Their prices are also considerably better. I find that they charge about $2.00 per bottle less than the same Virginia wine that I can buy at Giant Food. They have an amazing selection of craft brewed beers (formerly referred to as microbrewery beer). You can buy singles of most beers to try them out, or pick up a six pack or more. I go here when I need to pick up some Naked Mountain Chardonnay, or a good Virginia red (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon) from say either Breaux or Horton Vineyards. They also carry a number of hard ciders. The one area they fall short in is in Mead selection. They carry several pseudo-meads - basically these are a concoction or mixture of something that has had some sort of white wine added to it. No true Meads here. They frequently conduct wine tastings in the store on weekends - they'll have a table set up just inside close to where you enter the store - you can taste whatever it is they've chosen for tastings that day. You ever have a good experience at a place that you assume doesn't have many reviews because it's not a restaurant? Thought I was doing this store a favor but I come onto Yelp and it appears I am not the only one who has had exceptional service here! Every. Single. Staff. Member. Was. Excited. And. Happy. To. Be. There. Idk about y'all, but when I step into any establishment and a staff member is just plain excited and energetic and happy, you immediately feel the same. Every staff member my friend and I asked questions to were eager to help us and bounced us off to a more informative staff member when we asked about certain wines. I wish I had gotten everyone's names, but David was the one we bothered the most haha. He was soooo helpful and incredibly knowledgeable and I appreciated his time and patience with us. After we checked out he even caught up to us outside and asked if we needed help loading the car! That was such a nice gesture and definitely not expected! I just moved to the area so it was such a pleasant experience and knowing my new local Total Wine has such great people in it makes me all the more excited to go there! read more

Several times I've come here folks at the register seem to hate their lives and give you major attitude. They usually always forget to ask you for your Loyalty Program number (phone #). This is a great store. They have the most diverse selection of wine and beer that I have ever seen. The best way to put it is, imagine your favorite grocery store with a wide selection of meats, fresh produce, cereal, complete with full variety. Now imagine instead of food, that store has nothing but wine and beer. That is exactly what total wine is like. They now have a rewards program too, full with discounts based on how often you shop there and how many points you have built up. They also have lots of information on lots of the wines and beers. Most of all i love the way that everything is organized in sorted. Last but not least, if you're a beer love (as my boyfriend is especially), they have a ton of options to make mixed 6 packs. I'm a big fan of TWM, but this place doesn't jive with me. I don't care for the layout, which seems discombobulated, and the front end (registers area) is overly cluttered with empty boxes and stuff. I also dislike the location; not the geographical location, but its slot in the shopping center. It's on a lower level than the rest of the center, so if you're shopping at Giant, say, and want to pop in to TWM, you either have to walk down hill and up again, or get in your car and drive a ridiculously short distance. It's a real inconvenience if you're trying to do a one-stop shopping trip. Selection is as good as any other location, and staff is friendly, although I don't think I've ever been asked something like "Are you finding everything all right?" like I usually do at other stores. read more

I had high hopes in finding some interesting mixers for a party before going, but it seems this store really only focuses on wine. There is one isle shoved in the back of the store that has basic mixer items and they were definitely a little dusty. I also wanted something fun to put in the rim of the glass like salt or sugar - maybe even in a fun color, but I think I could have shopped at the grocery store and found the same. I have only been to this Total Wine a few times, the other times I have gone the sales associates were super helpful. My review however is in regards to the experience I had yesterday. The day before yesterday I had purchased a case of San Miguel beer from the Philippines, which consists of 4 6-packs for a sports viewing party my family was throwing. The next day I came back to return 2 6-packs that were not consumed for the occasion for which they were purchased. Immediately upon seeing me in the store, the MANAGER made a really petty comment about me having to return the product because my team had lost, complete with fake "boohoo" and crying faces. I was really not amused by this gesture and made this very clear, and I think the guy realized his faux pas and walked away from me quickly. It really baffles me that this is how *management* treats their customers. Whether or not the team I was supporting had won or lost, I would have returned the excess product anyway- that is none of your business. I did not come into the store to hear the employee's opinion or be mocked for supporting a losing team. The most troubling aspect of this encounter was that the mockery definitely had racial undertones. I am considering calling to the corporate office to complain, the way I was treated was not only petty and unacceptable but it is a piss poor example of how *management* should interact with customers. read more

I love wine classes. It's seriously the best. Most of the time, if you start drinking at 1pm, you'll either have to start singing shitty Buffett songs about it being 5 o'clock somewhere (seriously people - retire that line. It wasn't that clever to begin with), or you'll have to look deep within yourself and acknowlege that you might be a lush. But a wine class??? That's like doing a wine tasting. Basically, you're not *drinking*...you're TASTING. When it's a class, it's also LEARNIN'. So like, that's a double bonus. (side note: is there such a thing as a PhD on drinking cheap wine? Because I think I could totally go back to school for that.) Total Wine & More has weekly wine classes. It's only $20, and you get somewhere between 8 - 12 wines (depending on the class). AND on top of that - they put out a nice spread of cheeses and crackers and pates and luncheon meats, and all sorts of delightful snacks. So basically, it's $20 for a semi-open bar and free food. Seriously - I don't want it to sound like I have a problem or anything...but this is as close to heaven as it gets for me. Oh and to top it all off...the staff is UBER NICE. At one point, I semi-tipsily asked them about one of the cheeses that they served during the wine tasting, and the manager walked me over to their cheese case to show me which one it was (I ended up buying something like 5 pounds of it. They do tend to have more interesting leftovers thanks to slower inventory turnover, but that's not to say new releases weren't available-- scored plenty of the Smitten I was looking for. Found a dozen Ghostface Killah singles, and some Bell's Winter post-season. Also note that it's actually cheaper to buy Dogfish from here than from the Alehouse around the corner. Beer. I love beer. And I don't mean crappy NASCAR beer, or even the range of imports and so-called microbrews that most places have to appease beer drinkers with standards. I am talking about finely crafted brew that dances on the pallet and taste of shear awesomeness. And the great thing about Total Wine is they have lots of beer. LOTS OF BEER. There are a lot of Total Wine & More locations in No.Va. (I wish they still used Total Beverage, but whatever) but this one is my favorite. This is a HUGE location and the selection here is outstanding. And when they have tastings, you get to speak with people who are actually knowledgeable about beer! I feel like when i walk into total wine, I have a similar feeling to that of a 5 year old at disney world. You feel completely excited and at the same time completely overwhelmed as you don't know where to begin! I think one of the best parts of Total Wine is the people working there. They have an extensive knowledge (or at least they sound like they do) about all kinds of different wines and beer. Its great! I especially like how when you walk into the place there is a section that says "the staff reccommends" where they have many different choices for those of you who dont know what you want. I was impressed when i went in there looking for a type of wine I had had at dinner and never heard of and was able to find someone who not only found the wine but was able to give reccommendations and was actually the authority on that style of wine (his picture was right by it!) I was pretty excited :) They have a wide selection of Virginia wines which definitely saves you a trip to the winery! And then there is also the beer! They have a pretty expansive selection of beers. Just be careful as sometimes the more "obscure" beers sit there a while so i've had some problems with expirations. Just double check and you should be good to go! Great place; I'm surprised I'd never heard of these. The beer selection is incredible, though I'm sure some of the obscure beers have been there for a bit. (If you're in a nice yuppie area with lots of snobs like me who drink only craft brews, you'll probably be okay.) I was in Chantilly for training for work, and I found this place on Yelp. I was looking for a bottle of wine for dinner at a friend's house, and I wound up buying a ton of beer that I can't get in PA, thanks to the idiotic laws there. I'm hoping that these guys will lobby PA hard to change their laws to open those markets up; otherwise, I'm going to be stuck with bad, expensive beer. (The manager of this location said they have 55 stores - mostly mid-Atlantic sans PA, but they've moved into CA recently. Local is nice, but since most wine and beer stores suck, I'm hoping these guys spur some changes in the wine & beer retail industry.) read more

The prices and selection at this store are wonderful and worth five stars in itself, but this review is for the kindness and wonderful customer service that my boyfriend and I experienced last evening. After we checked out, we got to our car and I realized that I didn't have our keys. My boyfriend set our purchase next to our car and we ran inside to see if we left the keys on the counter at checkout. After realizing that wasn't the case, we came back out to the parking lot to find our purchase was gone and the keys were locked in the car. My boyfriend went back into Total Wine and made the same purchase again thinking it was stolen from next to our car, and we were assured our car would not be towed overnight. After we called a cab and went home, we had a voicemail from Stephen Blackwell telling us that another customer had brought in our purchase thinking it was forgotten, and he had refunded my boyfriend's credit card for the extra purchase. This is the place to go in Fairfax if you don't feel like drinking the swill the grocery store shelves are populated with. They have an exhaustive selection of wines from just about everywhere, organized by place. If you're sitting around on a Monday night and decide you're craving some vin from Alsace-Lorraine then just head over to Total Wine. The center of the store is a double wide aisle featuring craft and microbrews both by the bottle and the 6 pack. They have empty packs you can use to make your own dream six pack, with bottles running from a buck up to about 5 depending on the make and model. There are almost always employees out on the floor who can answer any question you throw at them, and who seem to genuinely like working there. A quality hard to find in the retail world. This may be the greatest of all the big box chains. read more

One thing I really love about this place is the service that I've received. Once I walk into the store I'm warmly greeted and most of the time I request help as I'm on this phase where I'm testing out new wines. I went back a second time and was asking for assistance and they actually remembered what wine's I had the previous time which showed me that they were actually paying attention to me the last time. This is the place to go if you're looking for great service and great wine. I tried to venture out to Wegmans wine selection as it's closer to my home, but what I found was that the people there had NO idea what was going on, and I was so disappointed that I chose the easier route. It's both a very good and very dangerous thing that we live within walking distance of this wine and beer superstore. This is like a toy store for grown-ups - walking into this place and seeing all the amazing wine and beer can almost bring a tear to your eye. Total Wine & More has a seemingly endless selection of wines from all over the world, including a nice selection of local wines (support our VA wineries!) They have regular free wine tastings and other great events. They also have an amazing selection of beers from all over the world, and again locally brewed craft beers as well. Honestly, the place can be pretty intimidating and overwhelming. Fortunately, I've now been there enough that I can find my way around the various products and generally know what kind of beer or wine I'm looking for at that moment. But fear not, the staff are quite friendly and knowledgeable and can steer you in the right direction. This place has been here for a long time. It was the alcohol trio in the Greenbriar shopping center when ABC was here. I like how they stepped up in bringing in micro brew and other beers from local brewers. I even found beer from my parent's country. Update 11/28/2015 Came in the day before thanksgiving to buy wine. Wow was it busy. Busiest I have ever seen it. Got a ton of wines but am not real happy after having signed up for rewards and other customers are getting rewards coupons via email and I have gotten none. Am getting emails from my subscription and buy from here often, so scratching my head - I expressed my agitation with the cashier since the guy next to me had a $40 off of $250 on his email but I only had a $15 one I found in a circular. She said she didn't know why but didn't offer to give me the same despite spending over $350 - kind of disappointed with them. 7/15/2015.
