    Wine and chocolate pairing class
    Melissa N.

I'm a fan of Total Wine & More. They have an immense amount of merchandise, especially wine, obviously. But my review is going to focus on their wine classes. Luckily, I learned about these courses through a Yelp event. Recently I visited this location for a wine and chocolate pairing class. The class was educational and entertaining. Now I actually know a little better on how to pair chocolate and wines. I was surprised they offered small bits to those attending the class like pasta salad, a variety of fruits and vegetables, different selections of cheeses and cold cuts. We tasted eight different pairings. There were definitely some wines that I would not try again, but there were some wines that were excellent in my opinion. So if you're reading this review, visit their website to check out their class offerings. By the way, they have the cutest wine-related merchandise. 5 stars.

Total Wine (years ago it used to be called Total Beverage) is a supermarket style experience for wine and beer shopping. It's one of the largest stores you'll find filled with alcoholic beverages, plus all of the acoutrements - sodas, mixers, garnishes, glassware, cheese, smoked meats, and so on. One of the reasons I frequent Total Wine is their excellent selection of Virginia Wines. While they don't carry all of them - they have the best selection I've seen outside of attending either Vintage Virginia or the Virginia Wine Festival. Their prices are also considerably better. I find that they charge about $2.00 per bottle less than the same Virginia wine that I can buy at Giant Food. They have an amazing selection of craft brewed beers (formerly referred to as microbrewery beer). You can buy singles of most beers to try them out, or pick up a six pack or more. I go here when I need to pick up some Naked Mountain Chardonnay, or a good Virginia red (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon) from say either Breaux or Horton Vineyards. They also carry a number of hard ciders. The one area they fall short in is in Mead selection. They carry several pseudo-meads - basically these are a concoction or mixture of something that has had some sort of white wine added to it. No true Meads here. They frequently conduct wine tastings in the store on weekends - they'll have a table set up just inside close to where you enter the store - you can taste whatever it is they've chosen for tastings that day. Love visiting and shopping at Total Wine!

We experienced older lady was so rude. ID CHECK acceptable 24 hour ban- I DID NOT understand So, my boyfriend and I were at the Fairfax Total Wine location, trying to buy a bottle of wine. He was the one paying, and he showed his ID. The cashier asked mine, but mine was in the car. The cashier said they need to check everyone's ID. We completely understood. When a group of people purchase, they have to present their ID. It is the store policy that applies to all states. Truly UNDERSTANDABLE. We said we'll go grab my ID from the car, and we'll be back in 2 minutes." The store was not even busy at the time; there were only two of us, and maybe there were two more people, including her. But then the lady at the counter said something that totally threw me off - she goes, "No, NOW I CAN'T SELL IT to you for 24 HOURS." She explained it was some POLICY that if anyone doesn't have their ID, EVEN IF WE GO AND GET IT, they won't sell us alcohol for a whole day. I said okay, I'll wait outside so he can get in and collect them again." But she refused to sell it to my partner and we felt like we'd been blacklisted from the store for the entire day. We asked to see the policy but no response. WHY make us wait 24 hours for something that could've been fixed in five minutes? The entire thing felt completely unnecessary. I was just standing there, totally shocked. I've never heard of any rule like that in any store! It's not like we were trying to SNEAK AROUND WITHOUT SHOWING ID. I know there are laws around alcohol sales, and stores have to be strict, but is this 24-hour thing really a Total Wine policy? Or was she just making it up because she didn't want to deal with us? I've never run into something like this before. PS: We did not argue with the group ID check policy, but 24 hour store ban.

My husband and I honestly took forever browsing and reading labels. The store manager was incredibly patient with us, even though we probably stayed way too long talking about the cheeses we wanted to try and reading through their recommended pairings pamphlet. She was so knowledgeable and helpful with all of our questions, and even mentioned that they could specialty order anything that might be out of stock for us. Because you can buy their cheese by the 1/4lb, we ended up mixing and matching a selection of five different cheeses and a few cured meats to sample. Everything was absolutely delicious, and they have some really unique flavors available. The wild ramp alpine cheddar was so different to anything I had before, and the truffle manchego cheese was completely packed with so much truffle. The shop is currently celebrating their 10 year anniversary, and I can absolutely see why. Between the incredibly friendly, helpful service and a thoughtfully curated selection of artisanal goods, it's no surprise this business is thriving. This will definitely be my new go-to spot for gifts!
