A friend took me to VA due to there being a better beer selection there. His go to is Total Wine & More, a chain of stores that specializes in beer, wine, other drinks, etc. This location was great; street parking was easy to find, and it being off the main streets it was quiet and convenient. It was like being a kid in a candy store, way more beer than one person could drink in years. They had a lot of local and regional breweries as well, plus solid selections from around the world. They also had a surprisingly large selection of NA and gluten free beers, which made some of my friends happy to be trying something new. It was all very organized and colorful as well, with wheeled ladders to get to the high stuff. There was a lot kept cold as well. My only main complaint is there were many beers that must be kept cold out on room temperature shelves, which will affect freshness and maybe even make some undrinkable. I did a mixed six pack and bought a variety case of a favorite brewery I can't get at home. Prices were reasonable as well. The staff was great, friendly and fast to help. If you live near one, be sure to join their rewards and discount programs if you're a frequent shopper. read more

Avoid their wine tasting events. 90 minutes of poor information punctuated by cheap, inexpensive and poorly crafted wines. $40 for two people is an outrageous price for a very poor event. Total Wine in Ballston can do much better and provide much better staff members to lead these events. read more

Usually don't leave reviews, but was having a seamless experience until I met Tim. I was coming in with a return from my wedding and Tim proceeded to grill me about why I was returning to that specific store. Went so far as to ask me if a rep from another store told me to come into his store and return it. As he racked up the dollar amount of the return he goes "well there went our day". I'm not sure what kind of individual would represent their company in this fashion, but it was incredibly uncomfortable and unwelcome. At least the Reston Total Wine was a pleasure to work with. Total Wine & More is the largest specialty wine and beer shop in the D.C. area. This particular location is in Ballston in the bottom of a high rise building. The aisles are well marked by different types of wine, craft beer and hard cider. Being a cider guy, I was pleased to find an entire aisle of local, national and international hard ciders. If you love red wine, buy Earthquake zinfadel. It's one of the only places where you can find it in the area. One thing to note is that Virginia doesn't allow liquor sales at places like Total Wine so go in knowing you won't find liquor. read more

I have never experienced worse customer service in my life. I went in to purchase a gift card for the holidays and the woman checking me out was so incredibly rude. Rolling her eyes, being disrespectful and dismissive. I will no longer be purchasing a gift card because I genuinely do not want to give them any business whatsoever. Ok, so this place doesn't have spirits because Virginia. So what?! That just leaves space for more amazing stuff! I pass this store often, but have never stopped in to look around. Was definitely doing myself a disservice. I should have dropped in here a long time ago. This place has everything you need to create a respectable, and even impressive home bar experience. There's a decent selection of glassware, bar tools and accessories, plus a variety of sweet and savory snacks to pair with the vast selection of beer and wine offered here. It's kinda hard to get help from staff while you're on the sales floor, but you can usually find them at the front near the registers. I unexpectedly found two things that I had been looking all over for, but had a tough time finding; a whiskey decanter that matched the glasses I already have, and the "Sugar Lips" candy from the Sugarfina candy boutique, now that both of the local boutiques have closed. I was able to find both here, in addition to being introduced to an amazing line of wines from Imagery winery out of Sonoma County. The store was doing a tasting that day and I bought several bottles because it was just that good. Yay for new favorites! This store had a wine selection that is unparalleled. Whether you are a seasoned and sophisticated sommelier who only drinks bottles with a 3-or 4-digit price tag, or just looking for something fun on a Saturday night ("melted popsicle" wine, anyone?) there's definitely something here for everyone. read more

This place is great. If you are an alcohol person, please please, please check this place out! There are tons of options for wine, but this is also a great place for spirits and craft beer. (As a craft beer drinker I love this). The selections and variety throughout the store are wondrous, everything is always organized, the staff is very friendly and always helpful with recommendations or pointing you in the right direction. The classes (I've attended four) are always fun and very informative. The bathroom and store are always clean and their order online, pick up in store is quick and always communicative. On top of all of this, Total Wine now has a rewards program! I come here to buy craft beer sometimes, and they have a great selection of domestic craft beers (mostly local ones, but some from other States as well). They also have a decent selection of imported beers, but I am disappointed that they do not carry any South African beers, especially since there is a distributor in the area that happens to carry some. South Africa has a great craft beer scene, the best in all of Africa, and it should not be overlooked! Other than that, everything else is good and the customer service is good. read more

Visited Total Wine on Saturday 8/27 got some great deals and value. In the garage I caught site of an elderly couple struggling to get a case of Iter Chardonnay in their SUV. As I started toward their car to help them - CHASH - the open box fell to the floor and one of the bottles fell out and shattered on the floor. These folks were obviously in need of help. I took the broken bottle up to the store to let them know about the remaining glass in the parking lot, and I mentioned to the manager that it would be a really nice gesture to this good customer if he would offer to round out the case by replacing the $9.99 bottle. "No, can't do that." When I asked why the store did not volunteer to help them to their car with the burden which was obviously too much for them to handle, I got the same answer,"No, we don't have the manpower for that." On my way back to the parking lot, I ran into an employee making a delivery to a car in the lot in the spot adjacent to the elderly gentleman's. I was told this was a curbside pickup/delivery. REALLY? I kind of feel bad for the manager I spoke with. He said his hands were tied as he was just implementing company policy. C'mon Total, as a long time customer I expect your policies can reflect better than that. read more

This total wine is in a great location in Ballston that includes a parking garage underneath (with validation). The selection is what you'd expect, though it isn't as large as the one I usually go to in Fairfax (which makes sense). Great prices, really good selection and some very nice craft beers (six-packs and even great singles). Staff uses PPE, other patrons seem to take things seriously when I've been there, though they do have a pickup option too. Staff is knowledgeable and can either make a recommendation or find another staff member who can find you what you're looking for. read more

Yes!....a Cab tea made from the grape skins and still contains it nutritional benefits ...questionable but of course, I had to try this. Great experience with total wine! I was able to use the app to place a pickup order, including a discount coupon. I showed up to the parking garage where it's easily labeled where to pick up your pickup order. I checked in and said I had arrived on the app and I had the wine in my trunk within less than 5 minutes. Also, you don't have to pay to park in the garage if you're there for 15 minutes or less. All in all super easy to place the wine order and pick it up, thanks total wine staff! Also, as a side note, disregard any of the negative reviews that complain that this location does not sell liquor. This is not their fault; only ABC stores can sell liquor in Virginia. People should not leave negative reviews about something that is legally outside of their control. read more

I have been a Total Wine frequent costumer and used to love it. However, my most recent experience was extremely disappointing. 1) First my shipment broke during transit and went back to the original store. I didn't received any update (email or call) from the company about reshipping or refund until I call them. I had to ask for the order to be reshipped. 2) I received the reshipped order very quickly but it was my EXACT SAME ORDER, except they replaced the broken bottle. The rest of the bottles were still sticky and the labels ripped and stained from the broken bottle from the first damaged shipment and they didn't include the receipt as they have in the past. I am very disappointed because one of the damaged bottles was my dad's birthday present. I recommend exploring other wine delivery services. read more

Yes total wine is recommended by me. They have what you want when you need it and good wines at a very good price you can get good wines from southern Italy at the $10 mark. The store in McLean has wine from Georgia and Romania and Greece also. My only gripe with total wine is that they don't carry Hungarian Bulls blood wine. They also have a cigar humidifier walk in . I recommend total wine for a lot of people who like wine. read more

I love the Total Wine chain. I value how knowledgeable​ and service oriented the staff is during each visit. The Ballston location is no exception; however, at this location, you have to ask for assistance, as opposed to them offering. The only major flaw I can point out about this location is that it is not as large as the other stores so less product. Despite this, I have never had issues finding a wine I wanted, so that is a plus. Total Wine is such a great place for an extensive wine and beer selection in VA. Their selection is unmatched, and their prices are great. During COVID, the online ordering and pickup has been AMAZING. The Ballston location is so quick to fulfill orders and when you arrive for pickup, the employee is down with your order with the snap of a finger. I'll admit- Trader Joe's used to be my wine spot. But as of 2020, Total Wine is my new go-to. read more

He always greets me with a smile and asks me what I'm looking for so he can point me in the right direction. He is extremely knowledgeable about the inventory and has always met me at my price point and objective without batting an eye (gift/anniversary/specifics). An interesting experiment. I spent $600 on wine and signed up for their "more rewards program" I received two different emails stating that I had a $10 credit and a $15 credit. I attempted to shop online and use the credit; low and behold it would not take. I spent 3 hours off & on trying to get it to apply to the online purchase. I also called the store who told me I was in fact doing everything correctly. When I finally gir my More rewards to take , it showed that I only had a five dollar reward it's not about the savings it's about the principle that none of this worked and I just wasted my time. I went to Total Wine for stock up for a big birthday party right before everything shut down for Covid-19. I worked with a sales associate (I think it was Sue) who was great. Very helpful and knowledgeable. I identified my price range for a case each of red, white and sparkling, and came away with three great selections, wines that were not the best known/sold everywhere but that really hit the spot. Sue (?) even made sure my case of Oregon Pinot was screw-top, as I wanted, since the winery makes it with corks as well.
