Toto was recommended to us by a life long resident of Rome, and it did not disappoint. I think we were the only non Italians in the place but I was happy to eat at a locally owned and loved place. We ordered drinks and were served bread while we looked over the menu. We started with a homemade pasta that we wanted to share....they even split the dish for us which we wouldn't have troubled them to do for us but was so sweet. Perfectly al dente and the sauce was so flavorful and yet light. Also ordered the cod and caper special and a chicken dish. Both were amazing but the cod was the star of the night, packed with flavor and had all the right elements. Loved every bite! We were too full for dessert so they brought us a complementary sip of lemonchello and homemade biscotti to finish. So welcoming and lovely....we enjoyed it tremendously. The most delicious food we had in all the cities we visited in Italy! Also, the most friendly and helpful waiter who come to find out has been loyal to this family restaurant for 20 years. We ordered the eggplant Parmesan to start -- absolutely delectable! We also had the truffle beef/steak and their homemade gnocchi! The limoncello spritz was made just right! We ate inside and enjoyed the atmosphere. The owner was present and you could tell how important it is to him that everyone is happy with their food and experience. This is our first time in Italy, and we went to this wonderful restaurant called ToTo it is over in the shopping district. We hadn't eaten breakfast and we wanted to go someplace to actually have a really good lunch. We found this wonderful restaurant and we sat outside. They turned on the heat for us and we had wonderful drinks and the food was amazing. My husband does not eat fish, and he ended up having tuna and loved it, when talking to our waiter Al he told us that this place has been here for 100 years. I have no idea what others experienced. Our server was so happy and grateful and helpful. The fact that he spoke English definitely helped us. We booked a 7pm reservation (the only ones there when we arrived...). The amount of food for the prices was AMAZING. The quality of the tuna over fennel was perfect. The tuna was so fresh and the fennel bulb was not overpowering. I've never had octopus and I hope it tastes like that every time, but I doubt it will. The perfection of the cooking made it so tender. We spotted Toto in the early evening, attracted by the lovely outside area, and returned after a few drinks down the street. After a day of travelling, we were eating very early for the area, so the restaurant was empty other than a few drinkers outside. We were warmly greeted and chose our table, then quickly presented with a free half glass of prosecco whilst looking over the menu. Bread was also provided, with the usual circa €2 price per head, but we can never resist a nibble! Neither of us were in the mood for a complex meal and went straight in for main dishes. My cheese and three pepper pasta (a popular combination in the restaurants of Rome, and well worth it) was simple but very well executed. The pasta was perfectly al dente with the sauce complementing rather than overpowering. The other half's macaroni with meat ragu was similar in simplicity, with a bit more depth of flavour due to the meat but still the same balance between pasta and sauce. Service was friendly throughout and never too overpowering. There was a waitress in training who was very sweet and practised some English with us when delivering the bill. Not a stand out meal but a nice first night in the city for us. read more

Found this cute corner spot walking by and it was a nice surprise inside. The hostess invited us inside and turned on the a/c. The first week of June, a/c is a must for this California girl. The dishes were typical of everything we have found in the area, although, a bit pricey. Caprese salad was good, but not my best, fettuccine a la bolognese was good but pasta was not the best I've had in the area and the veal was a nice change for an Italian plate. Only 3 stars only because we have had better in the area but this was not horrible. Go inside and enjoy your meal under the a/c if you chose to test out. read more

Awesome. We were all dressed up looking for a place we had seen the day prior during our travels. I could only recall it was near the Spanish Steps, when we ran across this place. We ordered the bruschetta which was delicious a bottle of wine and our lobster and fettuccini. It was all amazing. We had a great time and a great meal. The waiter was overwhelmed but the device was great. All the people around us looked happy with the food, service and ambiance. We had, by far, our best meal of a 2 week Italy trip here - better than Florence and Positano places.... We were there in June 2012 We stumbled on Toto after leaving the Spanish Steps area. Our food was incredible memorable: Buffalo Mozzarella was the stand out - best we've ever had. Must order. I had the special, which was homemade pasta with truffles - big pieces of delicious truffle. I'd like to preface this review with the fact that I am tour guide in Rome and therefore am familiar with many establishments that I happily recommend or personally take my clients to. Yesterday I had the worst experience I have ever had in my beautiful city. I head to Toto to meet my clients before their scheduled tour (they had chosen the place themselves to have a quick bite before our tour). I sit down in the shade (which was on free table for two next to my client) and the client offers me a drink to which I accept and order a glass of white with the waiter. The owner (I presume) or indeed manager, comes out and begins to aggressively speak to me in Italian (I am fluent). He refuses to allow me to have a glass of wine as we (the 2 clients - an 80 year old woman and her daughter) are sitting at different tables (due to the intense sunlight - we were avoiding the sun and I had only sat down to join them before the tour in the shade considering there were plenty of other tables free. He refuses to serve me a drink as it's only 8 euro and we were taking up tables to stay out of the blazing sun. Fair point to which I responded that there were plenty of other tables outside that were free (indeed the other two tables next to me had no one) and I responded that I would be more than happy to move if someone wanted to sit there, but that it would be nice to stay in the shade considering the temperature and the fact that the tables next to me were free. He continued his aggressive tirade repeating that he refused to serve me a glass of wine (despite the fact my clients had had lunch). I mentioned that I am a tour guide and often recommended restaurants and experiences to clients to which he responded that he did not care and that the restaurant had been in Rome since the 1920s and he didn't need new clients. The waiter who was serving the tables was incredibly embarrassed and tried to apologise. To be honest I felt sorry for him as it wasn't his fault and he made it clear that this sort of behaviour is not uncommon from this man (I certainly will not use the word 'gentleman'), As I mentioned at the beginning, I live in Rome, speak fluent Italian and often eat out at restaurants and I have NEVER EVER seen anything like this in the 5 years I have lived here. Apparently Toto do not need new clients and the owner has connections with 'important' people in Rome so please not that you will be looked down upon as a 'tourist' and indeed he has made it clear that he does not need your patronage (despite the restaurant being half empty at 2pm on a Sunday which, considering lunch time is 1.30pm in Rome tells you everything). I have also made sure that my network of tour guides in Rome are also aware of the appalling, rude and unnecessarily aggressive manner of the owner/manager of this restaurant and to not ever take clients here. There are so many delightful restaurants in Rome with kind, polite owners and great food. Do not eat here - there are so many other places that will appreciate your patronage (and also be aware that Italy is still in an economic crisis from 2008 so people should be working for your money and appreciate your patronage). read more

We've been in Rome for 5 days so far and we were lucky to find this one. Mediocre at best where some of the other restaurants we have tried. But Toto has been a gem. And we plan to return after long days of walking and seeing the sights. By no means is this the "best restaurant ever", but it's very good. The service is great, helped along by Arturo our waiter. The place was slow at 9 in the evening but we have heard from several other establishments it was due to the current state of world affairs (Paris attacks, etc). The other restaurants are slow as well. Our food was great, perfectly cooked ravioli with a seafood sauce, Osso Bucco was nice, the Caprese was simple as should be and fresh. Seared Salmon with perfect mashed potatoes and Roman meatballs that was light yet satisfying. For us it feels like a home base - a go to refuge - if we are running late or just exhausted from a long day. All in all we will be back while we are in Rome. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner on our honeymoon. Located near the Spanish Steps the area is very touristy but this street is very cozy and cute. We have an excellent server who was very sweet and attentive and the food was good but It wasn't memorable because neither of us can remember what we had. Two of us had seared tuna with a sesame crust and basmati rice. The rice had cucumber and sesame with a rich reduction of balsamic vinegar. OMG. Was seated on the mostly empty side street patio by the hostess with my wife and daughter. The hostess parked our stroller on the side and left to get us menus. I stood up to take a picture of my family and was screamed at by a creepy old woman who said we had to order food if we were going to take a picture. I told her we had been seated and were waiting on our menus and then she screamed at us to move our stroller. I told her that the hostess had put it there and asked if she didnt want us to eay there, because there are a thousand other restaurants nearby that would be happy to serve us and not treat us poorly. She mumbled some crap about the hostess making a mistake and we left the half empty restaurant and had a fine meal a half block away at another restaurant. In reading other reviews it seems like a common theme here to treat people rudely...probably not a great strategy considering tourism is so slow at the moment. read more

My husband and I were staying right next to this restaurant so we decided to go there on night for dinner. After reading some reviews we were looking forward to a great meal, however we were very disappointed. First the service was pretty bad. We waited 10-15 minutes before someone came over after we were seated. I had to ask the waiter multiple times for olive oil and he never came over to check on us after we received our meals. The food was pretty bad to and overpriced for what we got. My husband and I both had the specials that evening. I got the potato crusted sea bass that was way too salty and he got the duck that was very gamy. In addition he was never given proper silver wear to even cut his meat with. We ordered dessert hoping they could redeem themselves with a soufflé that came out in two seconds (therefore it was not made to order) and it was cold. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to people. Right around the corner are much better restaurants with better food, service, and price. read more
