I'm glad there's a close place where I can grab fresh produce and even a quick breakfast/lunch if needed. They also have a great assortment of drinks and various imported goods. Love, love, love this place! The South Loop has a few markets in the area. However, none of them are as unique or caters to the neighborhood as Totto's. They've your basic staples for veggies along with produce when you walk in. The store is brightly lit and very easy to find what you're looking for. They also have a great deli area that has cheese plates, salads, deli meats, and sauces. They also have rotisserie chickens too! Mighty tasty and easy for supper. Their deli also has sandwiches they sell. I haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but they look delish. The thing I like most about this place is that they sell PQM breads. You must try their breads! I've been coming here weekly for baguettes ..it's that good! Their ice cream selection is also another thing that keeps me coming back. Great selections of ice creams with eclectic flavors. Totto's is a great addition to the neighborhood. The store has great selection and you can find everything you need easily. None of that scanner aisles and aisles. What can I say I'm an impatient person. The owner is super nice and the customer service is just outstanding. Come check out the place and make sure to grab some baguettes! read more

I got two cups of chicken noodle soup from them. They stacked them on top of each other and since the containers were made of paper and so hot, the top of the soup on the bottom disintegrated and caused the top bowl of soup to fall into the bottom bowl and they exploded in my backpack. Chicken noodle soup everywhere. Could use better packaging please or more thoughtful packaging when taking things to go. read more

Long overdue review for this place. It'll start with the good: It's convenient (only a few walking blocks away) and generally has things when needed in a pinch. They also carry some speciality products that I appreciate like Publican Bread and Bang Bang pies. There are 2 helpful male staff members. One sometimes works the register or front door, the other works the deli counter. I've generally had pleasant experiences with both. I've generally been impressed with teh convenience of the place and have recommended it to other friends who have moved to this area. Now for the bad: The place is pretty overpriced, mostly the produce. That wouldn't be so bad if their food was fresh, but I have now on multiple occasions bought produce (like tomatoes) that quite literally have gone bad/ moldy the next day. It's a disappointment for the price. I'd pay the premium if the food was actually fresh. Further, god help you if you come in when the woman is working the check-out counter. She is downright rude and seriously lacks customer service skills. She consistently overfills my bags. Pre-COVID I would bring my own reusable bags in so this was less of a problem because I knew the cloth wouldn't break. Then once the pandemic happened we were told we couldn't use our own bags anymore. Ok, fine. Totally understandable. She will quite literally pack them to the brim and then "weigh" them in her hands to see if she can fill any more in. I have repeatedly asked her if she could divide my items among an additional bag because I walk to and from the store since I don't have a car. If the bag is heavy and there is anything wet inside, I will have all of my groceries on the street. Today I came in. First she looked at me and asked if I had my own bag. She proceeded to notify me that they are *now* allowing people to use their own bags. That's great-- good to know for the future. For context, I spent over $110 on side items I needed for a BBQ, but sadly didn't have my own bag because, you know, their policy JUST changed. Again, she overfilled my bags and one was single-bagged. I politely asked if she could double bag the other bag because it was heavy and I was worried it would break on my walk home. "That will be 7 cents." I was honestly shocked. I just spent a sizeable amount of money on groceries and you can't even give me the courtesy of a single paper bag, because your policy just changed, so my groceries don't fall out? I reached in for a dime and she proceeded to say "card only." In the snippiest, rudest, tone ever. Fine, I paid a whole 7 cents on my card. I asked that in the future she should ask people if they want their items double bagged as I would have happily paid the extra 7 cents with my total bill but I found it silly to be charging 7 cents to my Amex (they'll get hit with the fees, not me). She walked away mumbling something under her breath and I walked away in a terrible mood due to the encounter. Point being the money wasn't the issue, the attitude was. I think if they work on trying to get fresher produce and address some of the customer service issues, this place could be a neighborhood gem. I'll still come in for the Oatly milk, bang bang pies, and publican bread, but I am seriously hoping I don't encounter this woman again or that she changes her attitude towards customers a little. read more

I'm sorry to say that I'm a bit disappointed with the store recently. Since the "shelter in place" the store has taken a lot of strict measures to slow the spread of the virus but I did notice that they still offer dog treats from a bowl outside of the store. Multiple people are reaching into the same stainless steel bowl to grab a treat, which is not the best practice under the circumstances. I mentioned it to the store clerk who opens the door and he took the basket out of my hands, opened the door and told me to get out. I have always thought that the store was a bit pricey and not particularly friendly with customers, but this clarified to me that they don't care about the community and I don't need to shop here. I understand that we are in a crisis but there is no excuse for being unnecessarily rude to a customer. read more

I'm really not sure why there are so many rave reviews about this place. Even before the epidemic, this place acted like it's a privilege to shop here rather than vice versa. Now you can only pay via a credit card, you can only enter if you have a mask , and blah blah blah blah blah. I don't know how this place expects to stay open in the post epidemic world with high unemployment? You certainly don't go here for the staff nor the selection nor the prices only for the convenience. And they've made it too difficult for me to even do that. I live right around the corner from this cute little place and its a perfect spot to grab a quick snack or lunch on the go! It has a very fun farmers market type variety inside, they stock these amazing preserves one is "berries and rose" and the other "fig and earl grey" and they are both a great hit on every cheese board I create. my friends have started to even ask me to pick up a jar on my way over to wine nights! read more

This is a nice addition to Printer's Row. The store is incredibly tidy and inviting and the staff is really welcoming and helpful. But, I think the product lines and prices need to be more basic and affordable so people in the area can take full advantage of everything they have to offer. Just a few things that I noticed in my visit to Totto's: Produce was very expensive, I would say two times more expensive than other options in the area. Everything seemed to be locally grown and organic, which is nice but having more affordable options would be great too. For example, bananas were .50/EACH compared to the .19/each at Trader Joe's or Target. They had basic items like hot dogs and hamburgers. I was unfamiliar with the brand but the six pack of hot dogs was marked $12.99. They had basic pretzels and chip items, as well, but they were all specialty brands. Their freezer selection was nice, but again, filled with expensive specialty brands, such as $12.99 for a pint of Jenni's Ice Cream. (Across the street is 711 and you can buy a pint of Talenti or Haagen Daaz for $6.99) They had prepared Rotisserie Chickens that smelled absolutely excellent but they were marked at $13.99 compared to the $7.99 that Jewel sells them for. I understand that this is a small business, so their inventory won't be in the mass amount of a giant supermarket chain, which automatically causes retail prices to rise, but it would be nice to see prices come down to a more affordable level where neighbors could afford to do a good amount of their grocering there. There's also no shortage of convenience stores/small markets in the South Loop that sell more basic products, so I understand why Totto's would want to go the more specialty line route, but it would be great to make the specialty lines a little more accessible (I don't think many people have it in their budget to buy a $12.99 pint of ice cream). Overall, I liked Totto's. I will absolutely go back but it will probably be more of a convenience based "I need to grab XYZ in a pinch" kind of place for me. I was so excited for Totto's to open in my neighborhood, and I am so happy to have it! I love the sandwiches (the pressed sandwich and the turkey are my favorite). I like how they offer unique and local products you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. I also love that they stock good bagels and Publican bread! It is a great place to grab a sandwich on your way into work or pick up some fun goodies for a weekend lunch or brunch. The interior is also warm and inviting and a fun place to stop into. read more

I had a very disturbing shopping experience at Totto's on Sat. April 11 between 2:00 and 2:30pm. After reading some negative Yelp reviews, it appears that I am not alone. Since the lockdown, I have shopped at Totto's a few times in the past few weeks as it feels safer than shopping at the larger store chains. I was willing to pay the higher prices in exchange for feeling safer from catching COVID-19. In the past few weeks, there have been new rules on every visit...no reusable bags, taking a basket even if only buying one item, not touching anything in the store unless you buy it, mandatory masks, etc. The rules are not posted, however, some employees treat you like an idiot if you are unaware and often rude in explaining the new rules. I just normally shake it off and move on as I realize we are living in unprecedented times. However, on April 11, the behavior was so rude that I could not shake it off which compelled me to write this review. I entered the store to buy a loaf of bread and return some spoiled basil that I had just purchased the night before. When I entered the store, I was told by the extremely rude guy manning the door that my face covering was unacceptable. Mandatory face masks were not mandatory at this time in Chicago but apparently they were at Totto's. So I left and retied my face covering outside. I reentered the store and my face covering passed the test. I proceeded to find the bread and I was scolded for not grabbing a basket. I explained that I was only buying one item but he shoved a basket at me. After grabbing the bread, I proceeded to check out and I handed the spoiled basil with the receipt to the cashier. The cashier grabbed the manager to do the refund. He said, " OK, I will do this in back". I told the cashier that I would wait outside and please bring me the receipt when the return transaction was completed. I sat on a bench outside for a good 15 minutes. I thought they might have forgotten so I went to the door and got crucified by the rude guy manning the door. He proceeds to yell at me and say, "He is working on it and you need to understand that we do not do returns due to COVID-19 but we are making an exception for you." I tried to explain that I was only doing the return as the basil was spoiled. He snaps back at me and says, " And you need to understand, there are NO returns. I want you to leave and never shop here again." I felt like a criminal. I was humiliated as there were other customers waiting outside. I thought did this really happen or am I living a Seinfeld episode? I waited a few more minutes then the guy doing the return came outside and told me the printer was broken and would it be OK to text me the receipt. I could not wait to leave the premises. So, if a customer buys poor quality food, then we cannot return it and we lose $? How can this be acceptable? When I got home, I completed a survey that I received on the text receipt and asked if someone could contact me regarding my experience. Now it has been one week yet no one has contacted me. It is disappointing that I gave Totto's a chance to respond and listen to my concerns. I also believe this could be a learning experience for owners/ managers. The team at Totto's is clearly not on the same page as the guy behind the counter had no issue doing the return but apparently the guy at the door had a huge problem with it. If Totto's had reached out to me and apologized for my experience then I probably would not be writing this review as I have better things to do with my time. I truly wish I could give a ZERO rating. I concur with some other Yelp reviews on Totto's, if your business cannot handle the current climate then close or just do contactless online ordering! I realize these times are unprecedented but no excuse for rude behavior. We are all in this together...Totto's is supporting the Printer's Row neighborhood but we are also supporting Totto's business. I have spent $150 at Totto's in the past few weeks and now I wish I would have spent those $ elsewhere. I have been trying to support the neighborhood businesses during these challenging times and every business I have visited in Printer's Row has been so appreciative except for Totto's Market. I am a Retail District Manager and I would be appalled if my team displayed rude customer service. However, Totto's management does not care either as I did not receive an apology for purchasing poor quality product or receiving rude customer service. With this attitude, Totto's will not be in business long as there will be no repeat customers which is the backbone of every successful business. I will gladly take my business elsewhere. Fellow neighbors, please DO NOT shop here! You deserve better from the customer experience as well as the higher prices! And lastly, buyers beware as there are NO returns! Kelly L. read more

There must be a problem with the quarantine here. My story is shockingly similar to the one repeated a few days ago. I started regularly going here when they opened because they are across the street from my family and I always love to support local businesses. I have always gone in to get things and even though they are overpriced, I liked the selection. I went for the first time during the quarantine to pick up a chicken for my family after dropping some essentials off for my family members. I walked in and the clerk at the door thrusts a basket to me and I said - "I don't need it Im only getting one thing." He said "No everyone has to use a basket, it doesn't matter." I said ok. Go pick up a chicken. Put in said basket. When I put it in the basket, the chicken container is not sealed and hot juice / broth pours out all over the floor. Im startled and say ahh its leaking - its not sealed! I also work in a field where falls are common and I was very concerned someone would slip and fall. The person behind the counter said no problem, I take another and move on. I went to the register and I put my basket down. The counter person says someone is already in line you need to move back - I said "oh ok. I didn't know" and take my basket and move back. Now there was no items on the counter, no reason to know that this person was waiting in line, all I know is someone is standing around the center island. Now this is a deli, he could be waiting for a coffee or a sandwich or whatever - who knows? The counter attendant then proceeds to stop and give me a death stare while so slowly making his way to the coffee mill to grind coffee. I think Uh ok I see you're angry - whatever. Then I get to the counter and take my chicken out, place it on the counter out of the basket and then open my wallet to get cash out to pay. He again gives me a dirty look and says "the chicken has to be in the basket." I said "I dont know what the problem is and why you're giving me dirty looks I just want to buy the chicken." He then tells me to get out. I said "Dont be ridiculous, Im just trying to buy a chicken for my family." He then says "Im the owner (REALLY? WOW!) and you can get out - I'm not going to sell you a chicken. Get out." I said "well, clearly you're an asshole and walked out." Heres the thing Scott, you're not doing a favor to the neighborhood by being open. Your neighbors are doing you a favor by supporting your overpriced store. We all are stressed and we ALL are getting used to a new system. 1) I dont shop at your store regularly enough to know your protocol, basket or not. Most stores have signage, and are explicit with their policies. How about a sign on the door that says: Please take a basket? Boxes on the floor: Please wait here? Give your customers a clue maybe? 2) You should make sure your $17.00 chickens are sealed when you put them on the counter for sale. 3) Don't give dirty looks to customers - what are you 12? And what the hell kind of example are you setting for your team? Im embarrassed for you. 4) And finally - not selling a chicken to someone? Give me a break. If you can't handle the current climate Scott, then CLOSE THE STORE. Do contactless online ordering. DON'T KEEP THE STORE OPEN AND BE A JERK. Wow. Good luck surviving the challenging arena. This place is a waste of prime real estate. Everything is over priced. They literally have items from Whole Foods and just doubled the price. The staff is rude and unwelcoming. The store is tiny and unorganized. I will gladly shop at the other great stores in Printers Row, that are friendly and reasonably priced, such as the South Loop Market, Urban Grocer or Printers Row Wine Shop just to name a few. I went there to buy a snack since Trader's Joe's was closed for Easter and to my surprise, one of the employees did not let me in because I was not wearing a "mask". Honestly I did not understand it since to the best of my knowledge wearing a mask is recommended, but not mandatory. There is an employee who usually stands at the door and is generally unpleasant, but today he crossed the line from being unfriendly to being condescending and mean, such that I felt the need to leave. I'm not sure what to make of this place. The produce I bought was really good but the prices are so absurd that I couldn't help laughing while making my way through the store. $10 for a dozen eggs? Hilarious. $11 for a pint of ice cream? Almost fell on the floor. $15 for a rotisserie chicken? My knees will never recover from the slapping. Totto's is worth a visit. It's a handy and unique addition to the South Loop--not quite a convenience store, more of a mini grocery specialty store. They have an array of interesting fare, from grocery basics to interesting and unusual items to try. But the store suffers from 3 major flaws that make me a less than devoted customer: (1) Unfriendly employees. REALLY unfriendly employees. (2) Absurdly high prices. (3) Non-fresh goods. I've been burned by spoilt milk and stale dry goods on multiple occasions, and like I said, I hesitate to go there all that often because of the rude staff. read more

This boutique grocery is a nice addition to the neighborhood given the food desert within walking distance in printer's row. The store is nicely put together and the selection is fairly healthy and tasty. I have tried the sandwiches and premade tofu dishes and they are excellent. So is the bread from Publican. To top it all off they have Jenni's ice cream, my personal favorite and the only store to carry other than whole foods, a mile away. My only complaint is the exorbitant pricing like others have mentioned. I've winced more than once at the register. Overall this is a great place but I'll only be going when I'm unable to go to Trader Joe's or whole foods. read more

This specialty grocery is a welcome addition to the South Loop. Their fresh salads, veggies, sandwiches and deli are fantastic. All top quality products. Pricing is as you would expect for a gourmet/specialty grocer. Their roast chickens are delicious also. The location can't be beat for the neighborhood and those walking home from work. I stop quite often and I love their prepared salads. I find the size, quality and price - approx. 6.99 quite fair. Purchasing a salad in the Loop would cost almost double at lunch. The staff is helpful, friendly and courteous. Keep up the great job. read more
