It's been a while since I've been there, but the last time I was there, they renovated the hell out of the place. They have a nice patio just south of the Second Cup on John St. with a nice view of the CN Tower. The menu has a bit more than offer than most places and the quality is above average. They also have a pretty decent beer selection which is decently priced. If you are ever stuck for ideas as to where to eat around that part of town, give these guys a try. read more

Richard was in town for a week prior to departing to Shanghai, how kind of him to reserve a slot for me in his schedule. I offered my extra ticket to a performance at the Roy Thomson Hall, prime seating. Naturally, afterwards we would be expected to grab a drink at somewhere equally as affluent, but Richard's friends joined the party, and the evening concluded with a few rounds at the Town Crier. Located at the heart of Toronto's Entertainment district, this pub shared the same poor lighting as the nightclubs that occupied the surrounding blocks. I browsed the menu with low expectations, and sure enough the food menu did disappoint. To my surprise, the beer menu was among some of the most plentiful I've ever seen. I took a chance and ordered the Liefman Fruitesse. A fruit flavoured beer with remarkable fruitiness that still tasted of beer. Richard got some other brand in a very tall glass. Richard's friends arrived, a couple. Perfect. Shake hands, smile, forget each other's names, return to seating position. The heavily bearded waiter took our orders with an unexpected level of professionalism, and I quickly saw past the beard as just facial hair, rather than the pressure of conformity which burdens a majority other heavily bearded men. The man spoke with elegance and knowledgeability, and already I was working out the respectable amount in tips even before placing my order. I ordered the burger, which variation I have forgotten, does it really matter? With a side of fries, fascinating! Nice guy Richard's friend, but his girlfriend from South America took objection to my opinions, and felt she needed to correct my use of the English language, as she felt it was archaic and not politically correct. Somehow the conversation ended up to her asking me my exercise routine, and I politely informed her that I don't work out. "At all?!" She inquired with the look of denial in her eyes. "At all." I replied with nonchalance in mine. The expression of utter disgust eclipsed her otherwise fairly exfoliated face and I could almost see the thoughts running through her head, completely appalled by my non-conformity. Surely, a man must exercise his body. Of course I do, not to the extent of which I once did, but of course I do. I just didn't want to give her the satisfaction of affirmation, and therefore somehow categorizing me in whatever feminist list she had towards people. She struggled for a very long moment before she could speak, and then decided to say nothing. There and then, I have created a new category of human being in her mind. I like to think that category named as "Not give a damn about what you think, Lady." When the waiter came to check up on us and ask that obligatory "How's everything?" a wet sensation overwhelmed the inside of my pants. It was not often this sensation is experienced, and so it took a second for it to register as Richard spilling his entire tall glass of beer onto my crotch. Good job, Dick. The waiter stifled his laughter, feminist girl I could only imagine was feeling something close to satisfaction, and I stood up in a display of total wet crotch. It didn't help that Richard's beer washed some of my pink fruit beer onto my pants, or that the two girls sitting next to our table witness the whole thing in amusement. I ascended upstairs to the washroom in a crab walk to rigorously rub paper towels around my 'wet area', only to come back to the table and see that Dick has ordered himself another beer. No beer for the victim of his table etiquette crimes, just a penniless sorry. After I treated him to a VIP concert experience, he repays me with beer in crotch. It occurred to me that immediately after the spill, girlfriend was wiping the table dry of split beer rather than the recipient of the accident. I pointed this out jokingly, and she proclaimed that it would have been awkward if she tried to dry my pants. If ever she required emergency CPR, don't be surprised if I found it just too awkward to perform chest compressions. The ambiance was a little too amber, the service was phenomenal, the food was average, and the beer was wet--and cold. I could very well return to the Town Crier simply because of the excellent service, and if Richard were ever in town, I'd definitely give him something to cry about. read more

Nice neighborhood pub with a GREAT selection of beers. Our server was very helpful in helping us decide what to appetize on. She suggested we get the pretzel and the grilled beef short ribs. Both great choices!! They also let you get a taster of the beers if you're not sure what beer you wanna get. The beers are all reasonably priced in the 6-7$ range. A pretty great selection of beers on tap - including Delirium Tremens, which always brings me back to the summer I spent in Belgium. Moules and Frites were passable, but nothing extraordinary. My friend ordered the Chicken Schnitzel, which was quite good. Beer isn't particularly cheap, but they don't gouge you like some other places nearby. A good selection of mixed drinks as well. Patio is always crazily busy - be sure not to sit at the table next to the umbrella; when they bring it down, you'll be barely able to see the person you're eating with, which I learned the hard way. read more

Stopped in on a (holiday) Monday night for dinner. Sat outside (which was packed in tight!). Patios are so nice in good weather. And this is a nice little neighborhood w decent ppl-watching. Overall, service was great. Waitress was super friendly and despite being busy, took the time to answer my questions and tell me all about the beers and food. So this place has a huge beer menu, and a really nicely done Menu that describes each beer quite well with pictures - it was awesome. And made it crazy hard to decide. With my servers help, I quite enjoyed my selections. I started with an appetizer of German meatballs. They were a decent size, 4 of them, and in a really tasty thick mushroom sauce. The meatballs themselves were decent - well put-together, but not very spicey (I like them well-flavored). That said, the sauce was so good and flavorful, it wouldn't have mattered. And that's likely part of the point. I had the Town crier burger w bacon and cheese. I love burgers and also like a lot of flavor. This was well cooked, had a good assortment of ingredients all in good proportion to the burger, and was quite flavorful. Also liked the bun. Fries with it were good - extra crispy like I requested. On a whim, we decided to check this place out. We arrived around 7 or so, and it was pretty quiet downstairs. The waitress was super friendly, and we got some recommendations on their massive beer selection then placed a food order. Service was speedy, and our meals - a tuna steak sandwich and the streudel - were incredibly good and well-portioned. As a Belgian Beer lover, I was ecstatic to find this place. Initially I thought it was just another British pub, but I quickly realized it was Belgian when I saw the beer menu. Yes, they have everything! Basically a Bier Markt without the pretentious wannabees, the ridiculous prices and focused on Belgium. What else can I ask for??? Been there twice already and every time 5/5. Service is courteous and the food is awesome. They even have the Charbonnades Flamandes (famous beef beer stew), although a bit runny for how I know it from Belgium (in BE it is a bit thicker) but still good. The pork schnitzel was awesome as well, same with the open faced burger. Beer wise they got everything - all the Trappistes, Delerium, Grimbergen, Abbaye des Rocs, Straffe Hendrik and Zot and several others that I didn't even know of. There is the occasional risk that they don't have the specific beer, but nothing horrible. Love this place... exactly what I needed. Great beer selection but possibly the slowest and worst service possible. Took 30 minutes from sitting down to getting out beer. The charcuterie plate at $24 is an absolute rip off containing about $5 worth of cold cuts and cheese. Ordered a second round and the bill, neither of which came so we flagged down another waiter, told him our server was useless, scrapped that round and for the first time ever, did not leave a tip. This is my go to bar every time I'm downtown. They have a great selection in beer including my precious Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier on tap - all reasonably priced. The food on the other hand is ALRIGHT. The only thing that stands out is their Belgium Poutine, which is I would choose over Smokes any day. Service is amazing and the staff are friendly! read more

Wow. So it took 20 minutes to order a beer. Then we managed to pick 7 beers they didn't have any more. When I tried to pick another one the waiter ran off and finished a couple of other orders before I even got to order a beer they had while my friend drank his beer. It was my favorite place to visit in Toronto for last five years(great service, food and selection of beers). After today's visit I'd say that you should never visit this place to enjoy food. A solid place to go for a drink (or a few) pre or post your choice of entertainment. It's got a huge selection of mostly international beers on tap, and they serve in the proper glassware. It's got a nice patio, great for people watching and basking in some nice fresh air. 2 levels - its a bit dark in there. And the tables are ridiculously close together, so if you want to have a heart to heart over dinner- maybe not the place. Noise level can get up there since there are so many tables squished in there, and it can get pretty busy there. The menu is decent, German/Belgium influenced menu and also a focus on beer incorporated dishes as well! I love the frites here! thin cut, crispy, salty and so tasty! Most meals come with the fries, and I always end up eating most of the fries rather than going into the other parts of my meal. Their signature salad is quite tasty too. It has sausage, and includes potato salad on a bed of greens, which is a nice change from the typical entree salads that usually features chicken or beef or fish. beef short ribs are tender and tasty, although, slightly on the sweeter side. Prices aren't bad -most dishes range from $10-15. Portions are decent, and it's a very diverse menu. read more

Would give 5 star is the space was not so cramped. On weekends there is hardly any room to move about. The seating needs a rethink. Now coming to the selection of beers, that is amazing. The delectable collection of beers is simply awesome. The guy on the top floor at the bar was nice and suggested us some good beer! Didn't order food so cant say what that is like. This was a great experience. I ordered their Steak Sandwich and even though the beer I wanted wasn't on tap (Blanche de Chambly) I did get Kronenburg white which was totally boss. Then when the steak sandwich came they made it to specification. Medium rare. It was bloody like most womyns menstrual cycles but incredibly enjoyable. It was succulent and the seasoning was just right. The Ciabatta bread used tasted good not flat and bland it tasted like white bread should, The ambiance of the venues is your standard pub. but its elegant not dirty and most of the crowd is your homosexual television people who want to eat well and get slammed before they hit up the brothels hidden behind the movie theater. Suffice to say it is conveniently located in a tourist hood but it doesn't feel annoying because most tourists will find themselves dining at milestones Harvey burgers at $12 a pop. What I'm trying to say here is that its a good place. The staff wasn't the most knowledgeable however they make it up by being gracious and attentive. Its loud in here too so if you are inclined to people watch on a first date or dumb some slag because she's uptight and terrible in the sack this is the place to let her down gently. read more
