This place has a lot of memories. So when I found myself in the area, I thought I would drop by for dinner. I remember when you had to go down some stairs to enter, but for quite a while they moved spaces. It's still a typical British inspired pub, but a gastropub. That is, bring lots of money. I managed to get a seat on the outdoor patio. Ordered a half pint and the chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. I was really hungry, which the attached photo shows. The crust of the pie was a great texture, nice and chewy at the edge, nice and soft where it was covering the filling. The chicken and veggies inside were cooked perfectly, as were the grilled green beans and carrots. And the mashed potatoes were smooth, but also from real potatoes. And the light brown savory gravy on top of everything brought it all together. Service was efficient and pleasant. They really knew how to handle a busy night. Just be aware that you may have to line up for a while to get in for Sunday dinner and no, there are no reservations. First off, the portions are generous e.g. humungous burgers and plentiful home fries and mash, plus when they say "mediallions" the size is more like a steak. The Sunday rib eye is the most succulent melt-in-the mouth and sizeable chunk of meat I've ever seen on a plate that is served for one. The mash is also dangerously delicious. Meanwhile the lavender drink may give you a sugar high, the Pimm's cup is noticeably alcoholic, and the Broadview station drink is likely to give you a surprising kick by the end if you drink from the rim lined with chilli powder, so maybe don't down any of their drinks too quickly! The House on Parliament is part of my regular rotation for good reason. The service is always friendly, the space is clean, and it has that classic pub vibe done right. The place has multiple floors, plus a front patio and even a rooftop patio. The food here consistently delivers, making it one of the best gastropubs in Toronto in my books. On this visit, I tried the kalbi beef ribs with kimchi fries from the daily specials menu--so flavourful and definitely a standout dish. I also snagged a bite of the Parliament House Burger (an 8oz Wellington County dry-aged brisket & chuck patty with all the fixings on a Blackbird bun) that my friend ordered. A little awkward when I went to the door and hollered in, finding out I needed to turn around and phone in the order. OK, fine, I'll do that outside and my burger will be ready soon, right? Wrong. Turns out my iPhone wouldn't show me the menu for some reason. So I left, puzzled, no wanting to give up on this lame internet problem, like really??!! When I decided to try again, of course I checked on the computer before lunchtime and of course the menu was fine, BUT it was from the day before and it was almost noon. The specials had changed which is ok, as I just wanted that burger, as pub burgers are usually the bomb. The prime rib sammie caught my eye, but alas, it was yesterday's feature so it was back to the burger. Freshly made from house-ground chuck, this is your classic pub burger done right! (perfectly cooked and not over-done) I got the "banquet burger" (that's a Toronto thing maybe?) option which is cheese and bacon, i.e., the works, except I wanted peameal bacon (definitely a Toronto thing) instead of side, and got side due to me mumbling, but still was awesome! Loaded with sliced pickles and tomato slices everything was perfect about this burger! The fries were the thin, kinda dry ones, not my faves but were good as a side, although luckily I had my own ketchup, albeit they supplied mayo with the fries which was very tasty on its own. This burger is huge and you better be hungry! It was one of those meals where I was finished for the day after eating it AND had no problem finishing it off in one go which is saying something positive. With other options in the area like the Irv on Carlton St., your burger better be good and THOP checks all the boxes in that respect. Love the thin-ish bun as well, very nice and easy to hold for a satisfying, mouth-watering bite of burger goodness. Have always visited here at least 3or 4 times year because of what was always a delicious fish&chip ( haddock) dinner. The best I've had while traveling and being a Maritimer , I know good fish n chips. Tonight was a terrible dining experience. The fish was over cooked and crunchy , the coleslaw was watery and tasted off and the French fries were soggy undercooked shoestrings, not even fit for a fast food chain. House on Parliament is a high end multilevel pub on the west side of Parliament just south of Carlton with superior quality pub fare, tastefully decorated with well spaced eating areas, with a nice patio and a little front street facing nook for those romantic moments. The Fish & Chips is really an enormous slab of delicious N.S. haddock with great Frites allumettes. Their beer selection is extensive and the Czech Kozel Dark Beer was a great substitute for the ubiquitous Irish G Stout. Staff are busy but attentive, and I'll definitely be back! read more

How have I not written a review for HoP yet?! I've been to HoP a couple of times over the years, and it's always such a fun time. The classic pub where everyone is friendly and you can strike up a conversation with the staff or table next to you (with covid protocols, of course). We decided to drop by right before the new 2022 restrictions came into effect. And so did a lot of people. The staff were friendly, got us seated as soon as tables became available, and checked for vaxx info. We got a couple of beers and some dinner. The menu is pretty comprehensive, I don't think you can really go wrong with anything. I highly recommend the steak and wild mushroom pie. It's the perfect meal on a cold winter night. Despite the sad news of new restrictions, everyone was in good spirit, and very friendly. Can't wait to go back once things open up again. read more

Lots of seating which was great and the servers were really on top of walking by to see if you needed anything or top up your water. I love the menu and how it's laid out "utensils options" "No cutlery needed" etc. Really cute and so many great options on the menu for any taste buds. I tried the Pretty Paper Plane cocktail and WOW it was so lovely! They added passion fruit juice to it, which I've never seen. So delightful! We shared the scotch eggs. Interesting to try them. Still really must look up how they heck they do it. I also got the Posh Ploughman. It had a good mix of cheese and meats. the salami wasn't my favourite so I ended up leaving it and they had a pickled egg which was interesting but not for me. The bread and candied pecans were great but the jam/chutney wasn't what I was hoping for. I'd love to go back and try more on the menu. Was a regular patron for years, the last few visits left a foul taste in our mouths. First meal Was overpowered by a particular flavour, but ate it as usual; but when I was asked about it by the server, I mentioned that and said she'd mention it to the chef. Second visit a few weeks later for brunch one dish was undercooked and asked for it to be cooked further; got it back and it was still underdone, so the server said she'll figure it out. we still ate it even though she wouldn't take it back to the kitchen. Then after the female manager approached with an attitude and said we aren't welcome back to the restaurant because of our food complaints. extremely poor customer service skills and rude management. If you love mediocre food with extremely slow service on average nights, enjoy this "English" style pub. read more

The term "gastropub" is heavily overused and usually describes nothing more than ordinary made from-frozen food. HOP stands as one of the rare examples of really great simple food, freshly made, combined with a great drinks, wine and beer menu. The wines is well chosen and especially for Niagara wines, reasonably marked up. This place has its regulars and I can easily see why. read more

Tried this spot because a friend said they had gone once or twice before and were always happy with their experience. I can't argue. Service was friendly and spot on as soon as you walked in. Definitely has a neighborhood feel. Shared a good start sized portion of nachos along side a couple of cocktails. I had a Pimm's and they ordered the Freddie Mercury which was a tad bitter but I loved mine. I was absolutely happy with everything I tried. I am definitely looking forward to another trip. I was pretty busy when i arrived but was seated quickly as I was going Solo . their menu actually y had a lot of good brunch options. Also their beer selection was good too. Before arriving in Toronto, I had my eye on this place for weeks. After unpacking our stuff at our rental, we took off and headed here. This beautiful old house is located in a quirky neighborhood called Cabbagetown with quite an interesting history. Upon walking in, first thing I noticed was the portrait of Queen Elizabeth the II on her coronation day. Felt like I had a jolly old piece of England there with me. The wood paneling and portraits on the wall remind me of an old Library, but I absolutely loved the essence of it all. I fell in love with every single thing that I ate. If this could be my "Eat, Pray, Love" plug..this is it. From the Scottish Eggs, Charcuterie Board, Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips and Sticky Pudding....it was quite divine. I washed this all down with a pint of ale. I'm drooling still thinking about this meal... The second best part of this experience was talking to one of the owners and the staff. I told them this was my first stop on my Toronto tour and that I wanted really good local recommendations on where to go and what I should see. This institution has been on my radar for a while, being the go-to place for my friend whenever she's in TO. Whenever I mention it, her eyes glazes over and she begins to drool. So naturally, I jumped at the chance to check it out this past weekend. Even though it was Victoria Day, there was plenty of space both inside in the cozy pub and outside on the patio. If they happen to be full, there is a patio space on the second floor and another indoor space upstairs. The environment can be described as cozy, comfortable and chill. The kinda space that makes you feel at home even though it's your first time there. Friendly staff and great service. My friend recommended the pies and mashed potatoes, so we got the tourtiere and the steak & wild mushroom pie. Both came with mashed baby red skin potatoes, some beans and a roasted yellow pepper. The steak & wild mushroom pie was the winner of the pie battle. The flavors are hearty, strong and the chunks of beef are fork tender. The pie crust is crisp and gives a good counterbalance to the plentiful stuffing. The tourtiere is lighter (in comparison), and the thoughtful addition of the tomato jalapeno chutney further cuts through the heaviness. Will definitely be back! read more

After a stroll through the Old Cabbagetown section of Toronto, my wife and I found the perfect place to relax, unwind and stuff our faces beyond recognition. House on Parliament is a busy yet welcoming gastropub that serves elevated pub grub raised to a high level. For an appetizer, my wife and I shared the Wild Boar, Pheasant, and Cognac Scotch Egg, served with Branston Pickle, grainy mustard, and Baby Arugula. The seasoning was perfect, the flavours, mouthwatering. I would have maybe preferred the yolks a bit less cooked but that's hard to achieve in a scotch egg. All in all, an amazing starter. For my main, I had one of the daily specials: Moroccan Braised Lamb Shank, in red wine, apricot, roasted tomato, sun-dried black olives and mint; just look at that list of ingredients -- they did not let me down! The dish was served with a side of polenta which I expected to be nothing more than plate-filler but ended up being rich and decadent and full of buttery goodness. More, please. The only downside was the vegetable side -- not the choice or preparation, but the promise. Grilled asparagus was advertised but I got roasted Brussels sprouts instead. Though they were fantastic, I found it odd that a daily special substituted the veg without even a mention from the server. Luckily I like sprouts -- but what if I had not... My wife had one of the other specials: Great Lakes Monty's ESB Braised BBQ Beef Ribs with Chipotle Bourbon BBQ sauce, Frites, and Coleslaw. I managed to pinch a taste from her plate and while the portions were ample and the flavours satisfying, I might have like a bit more imagination shown in the braising sauce other than BBQ. But all in all, another winning dish. A good meal can only be made better by a good beverage accompaniment and House on Parliament has a diverse selection of draft beers along with a couple of ciders (one of which suited my wife's tastes perfectly -- the Niagara No. 1 Dry Cider). I settled on the GoodLot Bock Bock, a malt-forward lager, with a slight caramel sweetness and a mild hoppy bitterness. Very moreish. Service was friendly but not overly attentive; the restaurant did have a constant flow of patrons to keep the staff hopping so it's somewhat understandable. But what sets a restaurant apart for us is not just the food, but the service. An establishment can sink or swim on that, alone. Having said that, I'd like to give House on Parliament the benefit of the doubt on this one as it's definitely a winner. We had inattentive and rude service. Our dinner was overcooked/burnt and the response was "it's always like that" and "Eat it or don't. Your choice". Upon tasting, it was inedible and most was left on the plate. We tried speaking to the manager, but he didn't care. He said that we had already paid, so there was nothing he could do. The sausage meatballs were crunchy, juicy and well seasoned, surrounding the hard-boiled eggs. They were covered by the steaming hot hollandaise sauce, rich in flavor with the right thickness in texture. The salad was provides a nice alternative and helps to balance the heavy scotch eggs. The veggies and the balsamic dressing were very refreshing. My friend had the liver and egg. She was also satisfied with her food, but did commented that she found the scotch egg better than the liver.
