I'll admit I don't know Toronto well enough to speak knowledgeably about the vibe of the surrounding area and how that would play into the expectations of this cool pub. All I'll say is it reminds me of the cozy pubs of places like Dublin and Galway, and thus takes me back to funner times and good friends. The layout is, as mentioned, cozy and intimate, almost too much so. The beer selection is large and diverse enough that I feel most people will find something appealing. I've been to Toronto twice in the last few months and I've made it a point to visit the Town Crier. I recommend you give a visit and judge for yourself. read more

Probably one of my favorite stops during my stay in Toronto and it was just a happy accident. It was snowing and cold and we wanted a watering hole so we wandered into Town Crier Pub. It's a cozy German pub with a really fantastic array of German, Czech, Austrian, and Polish beers on tap. Plus, they have MC Chouffe in bottles. Sadly we didn't get a chance to try the food, but the menu looked amazing. It had one of my favorites, currywurst, and a bunch of other drool-inducing items. There are no tvs which is really quite nice. The bar tender was super friendly and talkative. When I go back in August, I hope to look up this establishment again. This is THE pub for beers in Toronto. They have a wide selection of beers and accompanying German inspired pub food. I am not a fan of beer but I always get Fruli when I come here, it's a light and fruity strawberry beer that's only 250 calories per bottle! You can't even tell it's beer. I've also tried their fries (classic and thick cut) and their "Fitness Burger". Very self explanatory name, it's a healthy, bunless burger with a salad. Not bad, but I'm not the biggest fan of the pickled vegetables that come on the side. Portions are pretty large! read more

Beer, wonderful beer! While visiting the fair city of Toronto recently, I was introduced to the Town Crier Pub (henceforth TCP) by a friend who knew I liked my beer. I was not disappointed. The beer menu had a fairly wide list of delicious European beers, along with some American and Canadian beers. As soon as I spotted Delirium Tremens at an attractive price point, I was hooked and I feel slightly* guilty that I didn't sample anything else...but I had a Blue Jays game to attend and after three DT's, I was lucky I could walk. Service was great. We had a beautiful and friendly waitress from Manitoba**. She could have been a model! The food we had was good. German meatballs were very tasty and generously sized (I'll admit it, I like big balls!) and the calamari was grilled to perfection. Seriously, it was amazing...so tender and delicious. The patio was a lovely place to spend an hour on a Friday afternoon. For supper before the Blue Jays game tonight, Gord and I went to the Town Crier Pub/Halfway Beer House. It's at John/Adelaide Street and recently opened (it's where the Fat Belgian used to be). Gord had been there on Wednesday evening and liked it. It's a cute place. There are two levels and it was packed. We managed to grabbed a table upstairs. They have about 50 drafts from around the world at the two bars. Gord had gotten the chicken club sandwich and fries Wednesday night and got it again tonight. I ordered the burger and fries. It was okay ... the burger was a bit dry and not very juicy. The place was packed and our food came out quickly so I'm assuming it was precooked and put on the grill to heat up. Have been here a few times with friends and folks. Cozy but noisy (common I know) atmosphere when busy. I have tried their duck breast dish, kartoffelpuffer (German pancakes or so), lamb chank and various Schnitzels as well. I love their food so far and the Schnitzels are very good. Very close to what you would get served in Germany. The mashed potatoes you can order with it seem to be homemade and not made with potato powder mix. They have a huge variety of beers from Europe and elsewhere and other spirits. Place seems clean and the staff is usually attentive. I will go back over and over. read more

This underground pub has the cosy feel of a old world club, complete with dark wood paneling, leather club chairs and low hanging chandeliers. There is an extensive beer list and they are known for their large schnitzels!! The service is courteous and efficient. A lovely intimate space to have a drink, chat with friends and do some unwinding. We had the Jagermeister Peppercorn Schnitzel ($20), which was more than enough schnitzel for two people. Especially if you order a salad to balance out all the protein and carbs! Will be back for more drinks in the future. read more

In terms of style, comfort and vibe, the pub scores higher than other places as their indoor seating is a little more upscale, nice and cozy. They also have a patio. Knowing we were coming here for dinner, I looked up the menu and reviews beforehand and wasn't very excited for what awaited. Had difficulty deciding on what to eat. The food is not particularly tasty. We ordered a selection of foods and many items lacked flavour. Chicken schnitzel had no seasoning and was dry. The Jägermeister schnitzel is slightly better as it's drenched in sauce, masking what would otherwise be an inedible piece of breaded chicken. Flatbreads are ok. They're definitely not flat. Vegetarian options aren't much better, tasted off. Fries are crunchy, come in large portions. The pretzel appetizer was good, though there was more dip, greens and pickles than bread itself. A friend ordered the tuna steak sandwich and raved about it being delicious. The salads looked appealing and colourful but I didn't try any and not everyone finished their plates. The food left something to be desired. Menu offers a vast selection of beverages. We tried different kinds and stayed with what's familiar and pleasant. Service needs work. read more

We had a quick dinner here after a long day of sightseeing and walking around the Entertainment District. They didn't have high chairs but our daughter sat in a booth with me carefully monitoring her so she didn't try and explore. I had two delightful raspberry beers, we got the burger, onion soup, and a pretzel/cheese plate. The pretzel plate had pickled vegetables and a ball of cheese. It was ok, but we probably could've done without it. The onion soup was the perfect size, served with bread on the side. My husband said his burger tasted a bit strange, but the french fries were fine. Our server was really accommodating to our 17 month old, offering to bring her extra hard pretzels or cucumbers from the kitchen. She's a finicky eater so it was very kind of the server to offer. It wasn't crowded as we arrived early, but they have swiveling lounge style seating and booths and I believe a private upstairs space which was being occupied by a party. Overall a great experience. If you like beer, you will have a good time here. Party of two, we came here on a weekend early evening. Got seated right away upstairs by the window. True to its name, it feels like a pub with the seating and decor. It wasn't a busy night and we got good service. We got a couple of salads and they were better than what I've had at Panera Bread. The portions were generous as well. They have a lot of European beer on tap and proper glasses for each beer (a big deal!). Cannot go wrong with that. This place competes with the Office Pub next door for patrons. If you ever happen to make that decision, the Town Crier is a great choice. read more

I had the German Potato Pancakes that came with a little gallop of sour cream. They give you 8 pieces I believe, and I got full fast and still had 2 pieces left. The flavour isn't all that interesting, it's a cool concept but really it's just flattened, fried potato with sour cream. After awhile the taste gets bland and that might also account for why I didn't finish all the pieces. My friend got the Belgian Poutine and he let me try a fry (heh, rhyming). I didn't like the added flavour (I'm not sure exactly what flavour they added to make it "Belgian") as it's a bit strange but some people might find it appetizing. Great Little German Bar! Who would have thought that such a German Gem would be found in Toronto. After being told by my traveling buddies that I needed to find a good "Dive Bar", we ended up here......and so glad we did. Town Crier occupies a really good location on John Street. It has a really fabulous selection of beers, particularly of those from German or Belgium. The inside décor is nice, and it has one of the best though with rather cramp in seating of any sidewalk patio in town. Its menu is wide ranging and I found the quality of food to be rather good, however, the best are those that are German or Belgium; it's their specialty. So for food I'd be incline to skip the lasagnas or raviolis concentrating more upon the schnitzels, spatzles or any of those being more German or Belgium. read more

I'm going with 4.5 stars. I love this place. I think it will be my new "go to" pub in Toronto. Two visits so far - the first being a Yelp event organized by Jennifer K where I got to meet lot's of great yelpers and a second trip for beer and appetizers before a concert. Here's the good: - Cozy comfortable bar. Two floors of seating - tables or at the bar. - Great service. The bartender on the second floor was amazing, she made lot's of recommendations and knows everything about beer. When i was waiting for one of the Keg's to be changed, I got a beer on the house while I waited. - Great beer selection. Beers from Germany, Belgium, UK, Canada, France, Holland and a few other places. I love the Belgium selections - the Grimbergen is my favourite. ALl the beer is served in the correct glasses. I tried 6 different beers so far and they were all good. - Prices are good. They have a few expensive items but most pints are in the $5 - $7 range. - I love the Belgium fries and the portion is huge for $5. They are served with Dill mayo but I prefer Ketchup. - Good Irish beef stew. Most of the food items are cooked in or with beer in some way. Dishes have a German, Irish and Indian influences. Food is not 5 star dinning but rather good for a pub menu. What more could I ask for... well maybe my own reserved table at all times! On the downside: - This place can get busy, so try and arrive early to get a table. - Why would a beer pub only have a one urinal washroom? There were a few lineups to use the washroom. Highly recommended. I'm on a mission to try all the beers - I'm like a kid in a candy store when I arrive. They even have a Yelp sticker on the door. read more

Brought to you by the same team that owns Sin and Redemption and the Village Idiot is the Town Crier Pub at John and Adelaide. Having assumed and renovated the spot that once housed the Fat Belgian, the TCP is much like her sisters on McCaul: a cozy gastropub with a determined focus on suds. There are fifty (count 'em, FIFTY) beers on tap here, with some very interesting selections. The brews are sorted geographically, and they have some really interesting picks. On my visit I tried a Grimbergen; a trappist style brown beer that was sweet and deep. It comes served with a walnut on the side (weird, I know) which is apparently meant to bring out some of the flavours. Or maybe it's just a walnut. Who knows. The space is a bit of a let down. I was disappointed that they have boarded up the glorious open-to-below that once was in order to maximize square-footage on the two floors. It does make the lower level seem a bit claustrophobic, but hey, it's a pub so that's hardly worth complaining about. Also for some reason there are fans everywhere. Is there something we should know? I have yet to try the food, so I shall reserve comment until next time. For my first visit, the Town Crier proved itself to be an excellent addition to John street. Obligatory Title Pun: It's my PUB and I'll CRIER if I want to. Menu Readability: While I hate that each page is printed to resemble a scroll (MS Publisher anyone?), it's actually laid out neatly, and I appreciate the geographic divisions. What a lovely little pub! It was a rainy, dreary day in Toronto, and I really wanted to find a cozy spot to enjoy my lunch. Enter Town Crier. I had a pint and a salad. (The sandwiches and entrees looked great, like really good pub fare, but I had been eating so many carbs lately, my body really just craved a salad.) So a salad I had- a hearty one with chicken, ham, some really tasty cheese, and fabulous greens tossed in a vinaigrette made from one of the many beers they offer here. Tonight after work I decided to check out a new pub a block away from where I work, the Town Crier Pub/Halfway Beer House. I had heard they had many beers on tap and was not disappointed. I counted 47 taps but heard there were actually over 50. A great variety too, from different countries and a few Ontario craft beers too, including Urthel Hop-it which is very hard to find in Toronto. I enjoyed the atmosphere. Of course I sat at the bar and Sam, the bartender, really seemed to know his beers. He had a few good stories too. I was well served and treated well. Later Toni took over for Sam when his shift was over and she too looked after everyone well. Although I was there for the beer selection, I decided to stay to eat. The woman who was sitting a few seats down ordered a burger with fries which looked great, so I decided it looked like a good place to eat and ordered a club sandwich, with fires and no tomatoes. Glad I did. Real chicken and bacon, a Dijon mayo sauce on a fresh bun and it was great. On Friday nights I enjoy stopping on the way home for a couple of pints, a chance to read, and unwind from my weeks work. I am sure the Town Crier Pub will be a regular place for me to do just that. read more

Now, I'll be honest. When you say you have 50 European beers on tap and you're counting a Stella tap, a Creemore tap, and 5 Hacker-Pschorrs (Hackers-Pschorr?) I make a bit of a face. Still, the Town Crier redeems itself ably. Kwak, Erdinger, Palm, La Trappe, Affligem, Delirium, Grimbergen, to say nothing of the better half of Fuller's selection and at least 3 interesting ciders make for a very strong showing. The food menu is solid German pub fare - currywurst, beef stew, braised pork, frites. Our 3-cheese beer flatbread was just-okay, but the stew was rich and meaty, and the frites were exactly right. Service was friendly and reasonably quick, and once you factor in the patio and the upstairs dining room, capacity is excellent for this neighbourhood. The atmosphere is pubby - dark walls, low chairs, comfortable but not dingy. Would be 5 stars if the kitchen blew me away but as it is we're still talking about a very solid choice for beer drinkers in the area. Pro-tip: you dips the frites *in* the stew, see? read more
