I have always enjoyed shopping at Ace Hardware stores as they are inviting and easy to browse and the only store that has disenchanted my shopping experience is the Shelton Toziers store as the owner has impressed me as ' The king of Dickheads'. I know most employees there are great people though last couple years saw a couple have appeared as if they would rather not be there and I suppose it 'cause of p.o.s. owner. A couple years ago a lousy attitude employee gal took my order to mix a five gallon bucket of paint and sold me the wrong product and I went back to speak with owner (wish I recalled his name) to resolve issue and waited ten minutes for him to appear though he never did- just remained in his office upstairs so I'm out $200.00. Because of him and the dwindling customer service I so much enjoyed at every other Ace Hdwr. I steer clear of this one whenever I can. My apologies to the staff as most are stellar though it seems they deserve more consideration from owners. I prefer to support local business' though this guy takes the fun out of it. read more

Service is poor. We dropped by to look for a ph test thermometer and the sign clearly said 9.99$. At checkout, the person insisted on charging 20$ and did not give an option why. Very rude. We just left. This is typical treatment of customers at the Shelton Toziers. We have lived in Mason County for 20 years and now drive all the way to Thurston county for Ace Hardware to avoid dealing with this store. High prices, poor selection and poor customer service. read more

If your store is locking up inexpensive common items at such high prices, the staff should be quickly and politely asking customers whether they need assistance, not avoiding eye contact or having personal conversations. If there was any real competition in the area, this store would cease to exist. read more

I love this store. I've found staff to be knowledgeable and friendly (when spoken to in a respectful manner) even when trying to assist several patrons. Granted, they are short staffed and have more inventory then the footprint would typically dictate, but I appreciate that I can find almost anything I need with a little digging and assistance from staff, eliminating the need to go to a box store 30+ minutes away for a light switch. I appreciate it so much that I'll even pick up my own mess! I particularly like their garden department, no one is more knowledgeable than Elvia from what will grow where to what soil additive to use. read more

Husky lawnmower repairs (or not). Nothing but additional issues after the "Fix". Blade belt now jumps off repeatedly and metal-to-metal grinding from the drive train. Blade engage cable rerouted and now chafes... it won't last long. read more

Great store with a good selection of stuff, I live closer to Olympia but will usually go out of my way to shop at Toziers instead of the hardware stores that are closer to me due to the better selection and the fact that it's locally owned. read more

Would be 5 star customer service, but -2 for the bag-pushing. It's a lovely little store with most of what you need. We just moved to Shelton, are home owners & would prefer to support this local business, however the unyeilding insisting (bordering on harassment) that a customer MUST accept a bag is very unappealing. I, as your customer, have a right to refuse a bag, regardless of your paranoia over shoplifting. Please don't require your employees to insist on this, it makes them come off as pushy & leaves a negative tone at the end of a transaction. Overprice, total mess, management seems to not care about customers and it shows. Building looks dilapidated and bathroom is gross. Is this store a bit more expensive than the big box retailers in town, of course. But you get better service here and that does cost something. It also helps if you enroll in the Ace Rewards program. They will send you coupons every so often that you can use to bring the prices down. If you are looking for a certain part or don't know what tool you need to do a job the folks here can help. The nursery stock is well taken care of (which has been important this hot summer). Sale items sometimes have limited quantities so it is wise to get in at the beginning of their sale cycle if there is an item you want. read more

Today my spouse and I went in to get a new pipe with Valve for our outside hose. It has been leaking awhile. An older gentleman helped us and was amazing!! We realized we were not sure of the right size part so we drove back home to Lake Cushman and returned with the part to make sure it was matched properly, the part was $33.99, at checkout the cashier was so rude, she stated after scanning the item that the price and the item we not correct, that it was $42.99, I said there were 3 others on the shelf that said $33.99, she not only didn't care, but then stated that "obviously someone changed the price tag!" While staring at us, to which I said "We didn't" and she snapped "I didn't say you did, but let me call someone to get the right price!" They didn't honor the price that was on it and we checked out with a different lady that was less rude! Tozier's Ace Hardware is like any other Ace Hardware but it's in a small town. They are almost always going to have what you need and most likely someone you can talk to that understands. Polite employees, adequate parking, on Highway 3, in town, great variety of inventory. Prices are going to be a bit more than the big guys. Not only did DIANNA argue with me over $2, she got on the store's PA system and humiliated and embarrassed me AFTER I paid the higher price. The customer service was very bad. I went to the counter, and there were three women at registers. One was helping a customer, and the other two had to be asked just to have them check you out. Then the customer in front of me asked about a product, and both women went to help them, leaving me just standing there. The man in the warehouse was very helpful though. read more

Through Ace Hardware online I ordered a Weber barbecue which said in stock and available to pick up today. Clearly stated that it came with a cart in the description and picture. I called the store to make sure my friend could pick this item up for me. Their phone system is not very user friendly unless you are a regular customer there as it lists names not departments for most things and no general option. I spoke to Teri who was not very customer service oriented. She abruptly asked me if I received an email saying they had the item. I let her know it said in stock on the website. She then said that it didn't include the cart which I told her it did. She said she would have to call me back. She never did. I was glad to support a local business but I guess they don't need my support. I cancelled my order online. Will definitely not try to shop there again. This disappointed me greatly as I worked at Ace Hardware for most of high school and through college and I try to support them whenever I can. read more

Went in to return a defective hose connector and was told that even though the package said it was warrantied that the warrantee was by Ace and they would not honor it past 30 days. I had agreed to their terms , but commented that this policy should be stated to customers and asked her to toss it for me. Then the manager that she called up for the return, but was no longer needed came up and I told him I understood but the policy should be known by customers. He then stated that removing the connector in cold weather is common sense. I have left these connectors out many times before with no issue. I wasn't asking for him to change policy, just let customers know. Didn't need to have my good sense called into question. I will be shopping elsewhere as much as possible. read more

I recently purchased a power saw from Tozier's. It didn't work quite right, so I returned it. Tozier's does not seem to be fond of returns. I was greeted with mistrust, and had to explain why I wanted to return it several times, to two different people. One fellow took the saw into another room to test it, to make sure I was telling the truth. At a certain point, I made a comment comparing the experience to the Spanish Inquisition. They started to back off at that point. If you're the sort of person that never returns anything, Tozier's may be the place for you! It's also a great spot for those who like to be treated like a petty thief. I don't fall into either of those camps so I'll use them only in an emergency, when I don't have time to drive to Olympia or Belfair. read more

We have been going to Toziers for years. The service has always been very good. No complaints at all until today. While waiting around for my husband I asked a young employee named Cassie if I could have some popcorn. She was working on a project and gave me a big sigh like I was bothering her. I sad sorry to bother her, she had no comment and she also didn't seem to happy when I asked for one for my husband. Afterward I said you can go back to your project now. Still no comment. she needs customer service training badly. She needs to shadow any of the employees there as they are terrific. Maybe this job is not a good fit for her. I have shopped now at Toziers several times. Every time I have been helped by friendly and knowledgeable staff and the they have an extensive inventory. I wish I could have a critical comment but frankly I find this store outstanding. The mark-up here is awful and really not worth what you would save by driving to a big box hardware store. For instance, a plumbing part that you an purchase in Olympia for $4.99 (for the generic brand) and $8.27 (for the expensive name brand), is $12 (for the expensive name brand) because 1) they don't carry the less expensive alternative, and 2) the mark up is much higher because they feel they can gouge customers who don't want to spend $ on gas driving to Olympia where the nearest Lowes and Home Depot are. For an occasional part, they are ok, but as far as medium to large purchases, save yourself the money by driving. The occasional specials are worth it, but don't walk in expecting to find exactly what you are looking for. Sales are more for impulse buying. Its sad to say because I like to buy local. But the local businesses need to be smarter and cater to the customer and stock what they need to buy at a hardware store. read more

This Ace hardware is very bad in customer service. We recently went to this Ace hardware, and was looking at some 2nd hand equipment. We asked someone that worked there, how much is this equipment to buy? and he replied: "you buy? Around $120". We went back the next day to purchase the equipment and the owner Archie Tozier was so rude, we heard him cussing when we left his store. Apparently his worker "was a latino worker" doesn't understand what Buy & Rent means, He thinks it's the same thing. Due to Archies negative attitude, none of our 15 neighbors, or family will ever shop at this store again.Also there stock is very limited, DO NOT buy any equipment there like weed eaters, mowers, or anything, they do not carry any of the accessories. We bought a Husqvarna Weed eater and where you feed the line in broke, they have to special order and will take a week. read more

Toziers is the only hardware store in town so you are going to pay more. I am ok with that as they have what you need. My issue is they leave the sale tags up on items after the sale is over and do not honor the sale price. Cindi the front clerk is very rude. Yesterday I picked up a item that had a sale tag of $9.99 and had tp pay $13.99. This is not my first issue with Toziers but one of many in the last 15 years.
