I went to the Gig Harbor Ace Hardware yesterday to buy a few things and was rudely stopped by a female employee as I entered the store telling me to leave the store immediately because my small dog was with me. I tried to let her know that my dog is welcome at Lowe's, McClendon's and Home Depot and didn't know that dogs were not allowed into Ace. She didn't even listen to me and sternly pointed to the door. I was embarrassed because other customers were looking at me when she raised her voice to tell me to leave. There was no reason for her to be rude to me and could have calmly told me the store rules. Rather, she didn't treat me with respect. I will never shop at Ace Hardware ever again and will tell my friends to avoid Ace in Gig Harbor also. Hey been going here since they were near Gig Harbor Post Office , and that's 1988 and AARP says they give a 15% discount to seniors, no no no they don't I was in ACE on Pearl st in Tacoma yesterday and asked why ACE doesn't give a senior discount anymore and they said "greed" as they give 20% everyday to seniors...There address is 2675 N Pearl in Tacoma and phone # is 253-752-2000 and Marti is the Manager....I gave 2- stars as Lois in her 70's is very helpful every time I go there, so thanks Lois....I think Gig Harbor people should check-out Tacoma ACE as they even have better prices on 80% of everything.....The Gerber family was always fair to senior's, but times are not the same....but Lois we love you..... Three Strikes, I'm out! 1) No Dogs. - Fine, some people don't like dogs and need a place to shop... 2) Bolt Cutters - 4.5 Stars. Yet the blades crumble when faced with 3/8" transport chain. Granted, this is the limit for most 36" bolt cutters, but I would expect more than a single use at this price point. Go to return them and they don't take returns on bolt cutters... Fine, I get it, people could abuse this kind of thing. I'll just write a review to help the next person who might have similar expectations. But... 3) Not Posting Product Reviews - Few days after posting my review of the "bolt cutters" on the Ace Hardware's website I went back to see if my warning had made it up... nothing. Those bad boys are still rocking 4.5 stars! I seriously doubt I am the first person to get hosed by these people. They carry some great stuff, but I wont make the mistake of buying anything with their name on it again. P.S. F**k this store and the management there. Two days ago a law was passed requiring face masks in public. It's obviously much more complicated than that, but it can be condensed down to this store is required to ensure all its employees are wearing masks. Went to visit today and half the employees did not have masks, and neither did most customers. Employees at the check-stands, which are constantly closer than 6 feet to another customer. No sneeze guards either. The manager made it clear when we asked about it that they didn't see this as a problem. Is it that hard, that inconvenient, to have to wear one in public? Are you so selfish that you'll potentially endanger others' lives? My family has shopped here for nearly 15 years even though it's more expensive. We're just one family and it won't make a difference, but know that we won't be shopping here anymore. Y'all are morally bankrupt. read more

I would not recommend this store to buy Stihl products. My husband and I purchased the Stihl 271 20" Farm Boss chainsaw. We used it about a month after we purchased it. He started it at the garage on a level driveway with the chain brake on. He carried it to the job site, which was in our backyard. He disengaged the chain brake to start cutting branches and it started smoking. It then it caught on fire. We called the store and the customer service person said, "It was most likely our fault" without even seeing the chainsaw. We took it into the store to show their service specialist with our receipt and warranty. The specialist before he looked at the chainsaw said that, "They don't guarantee anything that is the fault of the buyer." The service specialist said that. "You cannot have the chain brake on for more than a minute." He called it user error on our part. We then asked to talk to the store manager and he said it was our fault, as well. He would not honor the warranty. We didn't see anything in the owner's manual stating that the chain brake cannot be on for more than a minute. My husband and I also have several trees in our yard, and we hired a professional tree cutter to cut down about a 50 foot tree. They use Stihl chainsaws too. The tree cutter climbed the 50 foot tree and the person on the ground roped the chainsaw up the tree after he started it on the ground. We are assuming that the chain brake is on when it is being brought up by the tree cutter. We don't believe what the manager and service manager said is true. My husband and I also purchased a backpack blower and weed eater. and we were going to purchase a portable hand blower from Ace too. We decided that we will no longer shop at the Ace Gig harbor store, since we were treated so poorly. read more

The staff at this location are very helpful and accommodating. They did not carry a product that I needed in their store however, a staff member found it online and ordered it to be sent to the store. They have not however called me to tell me my item has arrived(which was supposed to be Friday and it is already Saturday.) and the store is a little clustered, hard to find good things when it's a little chaotic. NOT family friendly. I have two young children and the first time I visited this store I had multiple employees following us, and not-so-gently asking my toddler to not touch things. I myself was being attentive (and rather self conscious since I knew people were watching) and my toddler wasn't touching anything dangerous or fragile. It was a very uncomfortable experience. The second time I went we were on my way out of the store and were putting away the kid-sized shopping cart. We went to park it at the exit next to all the other normal carts. My hands were overflowing with merchandise as I was using my elbows and hips to push a baby in a stroller. The sales lady who was doing nothing at the cash register stopped us to say that the kid-sized cart belonged on the other side of the store and for us to please return it there. It felt really insensitive that she asked a mom/customer with her hands literally full and juggling a toddler to be responsible to do that while being stared at by bored employees. In fact, another customer even approached me to help as we exchanched looks of confusion over the situation. I have no plans on giving this store a third try. read more

This is the best hardware store in town. There's always someone who is trained and knows the products who can help find what you need or order it. Their prices are competitive to the local "discount" stores in the area. Sometimes their prices are even lower than the discount store. Most of their products are superior to those found discount stores. ACE can even sharpen tools and re-make window and door screens. I took in a bent screen door for them to repair and re-screen - I couldn't even find where the bend was! Everyone is so very cheerful. ACE also supports many local schools and charities. read more

For a small community, both stores have a good selection of just about anything you can think of. Although they can't always compete with the big box stores, they beat them hands down with the store associates. They hire people who have been in the trades, or really know how fix things. When you need to know how to do something, I can always find someone with an answer. When they don't know, they can direct you to another store, contractor, etc. They carry good quality products, and many brand names. What I like most about the store is that they carry a lot of different things for the home and garden. If you need to find a gift for someone, you can always find something here. read more

You gotta love a hardware store that stocks just about everything you might need (without a million square feet of floor space) and always seems to have the staff available to help you find it. Ace might not be able to match the variety of each item or volume discount pricing offered by the mega-chain stores (Lowe's and Home Depot), but chances are they've got something that will do just fine and it won't cost much more here than elsewhere. If that's not the case, at least you probably got some good information by stopping here first. Like several others have mentioned, customer service is king here. It seems like whenever I shop at Home Depot I have to go hunting for an employee to assist me (even when found, they may or may not actually be any help). Just about every time I've been into Ace, though, I've been offered assistance before I've even had a chance to ask! If I ask for an item's location, by the time I arrive there, help is waiting in the aisle to answer questions and give instructions. (Take that, Home Depot!) As a new home owner in the area, we've been at every home improvement store in a 20 mile radius. So when I first walked in looking for a quick can of paint and paint brush for touch ups, I was mortified by the amount of knick knacks in the front. It looked like my grandmother, who happens to be a hoarder, lined up everything she owned on the shelves. Then I walked past that and it looked like a normal hardware store. I had no idea what I wanted as I was confronted by two rows stocked full of paint. A nice gentleman came and not only helped me pick the right paint, but made sure I had the right brushes, checked that I had tape and a tarp at home for the project, and answered all of my inane questions with a knowing smile. I'll admit I'm still leery of it, but I'll definitely try it again because I was so pleased with the selection and service. read more

What a cool hardware store! I say that because it sells stuff other than hardware, or I just wouldn't care about it. I mean, martini glasses and decorative pillows and furniture and Mario Batali cookware and nice cookbooks... a family affair kind of a place! Most impressive of all is the service. Ace management is the worst ever. There should be a -0 rating. They have no concern for their current employees or past. I needed a verification of past employment from them for a home loan. I spoke with Lisa several times and was basically told "too bad"; I will get to it when I get to it. The verification was never sent. If the loan broker had not come up with a work around that would satisfy the loan underwriter, we would have lost our rate lock and not gotten the loan. Looking up the information they needed and filling out the form (4 questions) would have taken less than 5 minutes. This is just terrible business. The two managers there are full of themselves and only concerned with themselves. No respect for anyone. Unfortunately, only a government request that is not answered can be prosecuted. I might add that most everything in the store is over priced. read more

If I could give this ACE less than one star I would. I went in looking for a collapsible wagon and Darren looked for it in the computer. During this time my 2 year old decided to throw a fit because he wanted a toy. I held my child and tried to discipline him while Darren looked up the product. When he found it he gave me the price and I asked him if they price matched Costco. He slammed the book closed and said "no, you'll have to shop at Costco then!" He the. Proceeded to walk off with no further help. I did not even get a chance to order it through them. I was so shook up I was in tears. I mentioned it to the owner through tears and he simply said "Sorry but if he looked in the book it means we don't have it in stock." I try to shop locally and give ACE in any town my business because they are locally owned. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU NEVER USE THIS ACE. I would rather give my money to WALMART. I loved Ace Hardware. Locally owned (but not a franchise?), Ace was the place. Everywhere I've lived, I seek out Ace because they always have lots of knowledgeable people and work well with the community. This one, not so much. Two things. First, I've worked with other Ace stores so they will offer a 10% military discount to veterans. In the case of the Gig Harbor (Uptown) Ace, I've tried phone, email, and even fax to ask them to talk to me about bringing this discount to town to benefit our vets, but I have gotten no reply. Second, and as I've said, I go out of my way to shop at Ace because of the people. Today when I went there to buy a longer tailpiece for my sink, I saw an employee in an Ace vest in front of the store smoking. That did it. That prompted me to write this review. In short, there are not enough qualified employees at this store. It is very hard to find someone to help me, much less answer a question correctly. It's a big store, full of lots of neat stuff, but not enough (of the right) people to help. And the prices are higher than the big box stores. I now avoid Ace, and it makes me sad. I will drive to Home Depot for what I need, and get the 10% veterans discount. read more

Awesome!! One of the few places still left in the area that you can go to and still get the service you got 20 years ago. I remember going there as a kid with my grampa and it hasn't changed since then. It still looks and feels the same when you go inside. The customer service is great. There are always a lot of employees walking the floor, waiting and more than willing to help you with anything. Even if they don't have what you're looking for you still leave there feeling like you accomplished something. They usually have some kind of idea for you at least, like where you could go to find what you're looking for. I always find this place extremely helpful. The employees go above and beyond and sometimes totally out of their way to help you with anything! read more

Employees though knowledgeable are NOT friendly. Most of them are gruff and grouchy, and do not speak in a pleasant, helpful tone. They sound annoyed and irritated when asked for help. I get the feeling that they don't enjoy their work nor consider it their job to be nice to customers. I witnessed firsthand the rude response given to a customer in front of me at the check stand and saw the resentment on the customer's face at being treated in a disrespectful manner. My shopping experience there has generally been unpleasant. It's my last resort store. Their employees need training in the area of giving service that values and respects every customer who walks through their doors. Until that happens, I will limit my trips to that store to once or twice a year or avoid it altogether if I can help it. It's a pity because they do have a good selection of goods albeit on the pricey side. read more
