On my first visit to this Trader Joe's, I was fortunate to have Sebastian as my guide. I am in a wheelchair. Sebastian ran around the store getting the snacks on my list, always making sure they were what I needed. He walked me outside carrying my bag and waited with me until my ride arrived. We had pleasant conversation. He is a huge asset to the store in my opinion. read more

I stop in about once a month, but one thing is constant....I am fully assured that all shoppers and staff will have a mask on. Unlike other stores, they were responsible and put their foot down to let all the "Karens" know that they won't cater to people who throw temper tantrums and are not respectful of others. I love this store and wish there were more around. They have almost everything I need and it's usually organic and at a fair price. The customer service is always stellar. I have not written a TJ review because I know words just can't do it justice. It's like writing a review for Heaven, or the sky. I keep meaning to start a blog to keep track of all the things I love here-to add to the hundreds of folks online who have tempted me to try items I may have otherwise skipped. There are even TJ wine review blogs!!! I'd say it's 97% love, 2% just ok, and 1% dislike. But TJ is great about taking things back you don't like. If I listed everything I loved here, yelp would cut me off for babbling, so I'll take that to mean that you guys do not want to hear my list of 2,000 delicious things, and I'll just get into the greatness. Trader Joe's has natural foods, most of them are MUCH cheaper, and better than the grocery store. Many of them are 'fast' foods, frozen, etc. but even those are still more natural than you can find anywhere else. I can pretty much trust that there aren't crazy additives in anything I get there. Even my dog loves their natural food and treats, that are CHEAP! Their taste testers really do a good job of making most things taste pretty authentic, and often improve upon many recipes. I didn't like wine until I tried the many flavors of Trader Joe's grapey goodness. I've had $30+ bottles I didn't like as much as their $5 bottles, even if I'm not a fan of 2 buck chuck. No matter what Trader Joe's you go to, the customer service is great. They seem to treat their employees well, and they always happily go out of their way to help me. They almost always suggest fantastic wines for my taste, often open up random foods for me to sample when I ask about them, and don't make me feel like a jerk when I forget my reusable bags. My problem is, I'll go in for cottage cheese, or one thing-and of course end up getting a bag or two worth of things. I should know this going in, but my small trip always ends up being a smorgasbord of deliciousness, courtesy of Trader Joe's. read more

I have a love affair with Trader Joe's. I can't explain why it is I love going here, maybe because I don't have to walk 90 miles of grocery store isles to get what I need. I like the compact size and fresh produce they offer. I like the prices they have on organic. You can find some neat stuff you don't see everywhere else and surprise and amaze your non-shopping-Trader joe's friends and family with some great dish. I like they put little suggestions on the food tags, so when one wonders in here too tired to really think about what to do for dinner, they've done it for you, in a small subtle way. You can grab a basil plant, a few tomatoes, their par cooked panini bread, and the marinated, presliced mozzarella and have a great snack or lite lunch. The par cooked panini bread cooks up in less than five minutes to be something that smells like you home baked it and has a very light texture inside. It might be my most favorite thing from here. I prefer this location since it doesn't get elbow throwing packed like the Hollywood Location. They harsh my mellow over there, in Hollywood. read more

This is my favorite Trader Joe's even though it's technically not the closest to my home. The shelves are always well stocked, the layout is great--just the right amount of space. The staff and management are aMAzing. They're attentive, friendly, helpful with any request. My children and I have broken bottles on the floor and the attitude was like I was at my sweet Gramdma's house--these things happen, so let's have fun cleaning it up! The staff folks whom I see regularly at the store even say hello if I see them around town. My daughter is now old enough that she doesn't come shopping with me regularly and she just recently noticed that the stuffie they hide for kids to find for a prize (do you know about the Trader Joe's stuffed animal thing for kids?!) was changed from Olivia the Octopus... I think it's a crab now. But it brought up fond memories for us of both my kids loving to come here and wander the isles looking for Olivia with occasional help from staff. Once my son said he wanted to avoid the staff during that visit since he didn't want their help finding Olivia this time. I think its very difficult to attain a five star status as a grocery store due to many obvious cliches in the market, but Trader Joe's always seems to be the exception no matter where I go. Clean store with bright lighting, easy to navigate aisles, little to no clutter (stock crew), and no smells to avoid even in the seafood section. Staff are friendly, plentiful, helpful, and always near to assist. Most grocery stores offer many workers but only 30% of their checkout lanes are ever open even during peak shopping times. Trader Joe's had all but one or two of their registers open. I also like their dress code for the employees. Casual. Casual is good, fun, and comfy. Prices here are mostly great deals, just like most other awesome stores there is a small percentage of overpriced merchandise here but its nominal. They have a wide selection of crazy concoctions from ceiling to floor. I can honestly say I have disliked less than 10% of what I have tried. For the most part Trader Joes is a novelty grocery store in many respects, however just because they dont offer the selection of other larger chain stores doesn't mean you cannot shop and create a meal from scratch here. Prices here are on average low, you are treated like a valued person + customer, and you generally have a smile on your face when leaving the store except maybe when you run over your own foot with the shopping cart and grimace. I don't know people, I think I'd rather take my chances spending 5 minutes shopping in a slightly more populated store of people wearing masks than be forced to stand in line for 45 minutes between groups of people that won't stop coughing and talking. I'm pretty sure if I can smell someone's cigarette breath and halitosis from every gust of wind that goes by I'm probably not much safer out here. Then you get in the store and there are completely empty aisles, and more employees standing around talking near the front of store than there are shoppers in the store. This is probably the best Trader Joe's location in Portland. The only downsides are that you have to trek across three giant strip mall parking lots to get to it from the MAX stop on Fuller Rd, and it's not easy to get there on your bike once you have to venture off the 205 bike path or Fuller Rd. Other than that, it's never over-crowded and the aisle widths leave you room to breath. They also are much more attentive to keeping things stocked if they're available. read more

When I lived in SE Ptld, I shopped at the 39th Ave. store. When I lived in Vancouver, I shopped at the Mill Plain store. Then I moved to Clackamas and I trekked all the way to 39th, just for my TJ's fix. Boy, oh boy was I happy when they opened this location! I really like the produce section here. It's smaller, but it's "focused". I'm very indecisive so it's nice for me to only see a few choices for oranges or lettuce. My weakness is the Black Bean and Jack Cheese burritos. Definitely not super healthy (not the way I can put 'em down!), but man, so good. I also love the Roasted Tomato Salsa. Oh my gosh, the smoky flavor of the tomatoes is to die for. (I smother my black bean burritos in this.) The yogurts are also very good decently priced. If you visit the frozen section, I recommend the frozen bell peppers. It seems that fresh bell peppers can be pricey, so I think the frozen bags are a good deal. The hummus options are endless and the snack are great too. Everything is decently priced. I feel I spend about the same amount of $ here as I would at a regular grocery store. Another thing I love here is the parking. Always plentiful. This was something that stressed me out a little bit at the 39th location - circling that lot was never fun. read more

I hate to brag about this TJ's for selfish reasons. It seems like either no one knows this one exists, lots of folks who like in the area opt to shop at Fred Meyer or WinCo instead, or I always go here when it isn't busy? While this TJ's is a bit further than the one on SE 39th near SE Holgate, I try to patronize this store more. I find everything to be better at this store except for the beer (which isn't the end of the world because I find that buying beer from TJ's can sometimes result in bad experiences with beer). The layout of this store is fantastic. The aisles are likely no wider than the other store nearby but they seem nicer. Great value, quality stuff... I loves me some Trader Joe's on SE 82nd! read more

I can't get all my shopping done at Trader Joe's, but this location is on my way home and provides a great opportunity to pick up a few high-quality ingredients for dinner... or even a little treat. I agree with Jodeen V. about the layout of this store versus the one on 39th. The aisles are much more navigable and you don't have to say "excuse me" 17 times every time you walk down one. And yes, parking is waaaay better than 39th, even at peak hours. If you're reading this, you're probably already familiar with Trader Joe's M.O.: lots of tastiness, generally healthy ingredients and relatively low prices (i.e. - I can get water crackers for $0.99 here or $4.29 at Safeway). This store is more of the same. The people are always super-friendly and the lines are never long. read more

I like this Trader Joe's because of it's location and the parking is much better than the Hollywood district location. But that's where it ends. They aren't quite as established, friendly, or solid as the other stores in Portland. They have crabby cashiers that won't help you one bit. Today, one cashier put his "closed" sign on after I'd already been waiting awhile and he didn't acknowledge me and the other cashier did not help lift my bags into the cart at all before rushing me to leave and moving on to the next customer. I've been here several times, each time the same experience. Whereas at the Hollywood location, the staff are way friendlier and ask every time if I need help with my bags out to my car. I think it's a management issue here, otherwise the staff would maybe be a little friendlier and not so protective of their time and energy. read more

I like the products at Trader Joe's but the service is downright disrespectful. I am so tired of telling checkers that I will not answer personal questions. I do not tell strangers what my plans for the weekend are or what I am going to eat tonight. Not everyone is an extrovert. Introverts do not want to engage in small talk. It exhausts us and I shouldn't be made to feel as if I am rude because I set boundaries. Disrespecting my boundaries is NOT friendly. LOVES IT! Huge, clean parking lot. Very clean store with huge aisles. I love Trader Joes for their frozen food section. They have everything you can think of, and then some.. and it's all cheap! I also love their cheeses, especially the pre-shredded asiago. The staff is very laid back and listen to what you have to say. They are super nice and helpful and I can't wait to go back.. mainly so I can get some more mini chicken tacos. Yum! read more

It's really hard to find anything bad to say about Trader Joe's. Really only the checkout situation. It sucks when you're standing with one item behind a bunch of people with huge amounts of groceries and then an employee opens a new checkstand and someone new walks right up and takes it. This review is more of a 4.5, not quite a 5. This is one of my favorite Trader Joe's. It's never too busy and everyone is so super duper nice. When I have rotations nearby, I often stop by to grab a salad for lunch. And darn it, I always forget to grab a friggin fork! Not an issue though because 10 out of 10 times I've forgotten, the kind cashier always asks if I needed one for my salad. It's an extra step that isn't necessary, but very appreciated! They are also my go to place when I want to grab healthy-ish goodies as goodbye gifts for the clinics. They always like the snacks I get and often tell me they will have to go get some for themselves after work! Sharing is caring... Only gripe I have is about their produce. I've boughten some not so fresh packaged produce unknowingly. It's always a bummer when you open your goods and get spoiled mush or they go bad too quickly. I avoid it and just stick to non-produce items (except for the salads for lunch, of course). read more

I used to think that Trader Joe's was expensive, but I'm not sure why now. We actually save so much money here compared to Fred Meyer. Their products are always amazing quality, you never have to watch for high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, etc. The one thing that always stands out as well, is how kind and helpful the staff is. We frequently shop here and love it. Employees are nice, always appear to be having a good time with one another and always ask if we need help finding anything. Today we went and there was no brown rice when we talked about it the cashier Wendi said a truck was being unloaded and the rice should be on it and asked a manager (Chase) about it whom went to the back to check and walked up to the register with a whole case of it! I'm a huge fan of Trader Joe's! When I moved to this area, the first stop I made was to the Trader Joe's at this location. For some reason, I feel like the selection was a bit different compared to the location I'm used to in Salem. There are more options here for produce and for the premade foods area too! This place seems a bit bigger too, so it makes me happy. The reason this gets a meager three stars? The cashiers didn't seem too friendly nor too happy to be there. All registers were busy, which makes sense to me since this place is so popular. One of the guys that worked at the register had a "closed" sign next to him, even though he was checking out someone's groceries at the register. I asked if he was open or closed and he snapped at me saying he guessed he was now open even though it was supposed to be his break time. I overheard another team member in the isles complaining to a colleague about how they were waiting for another employee to come back from their break yet they hadn't returned in a while. I don't know, maybe I just came at a rough time. Yet having staff members who aren't friendly (especially in front of new customers and TJ aficionados) seems a bit strange to me. Will be going back as I love TJ's, but I'm now better prepared for some grumpy employees. read more

I usually go to trader joes to do my grocery shopping because i like their produce, but today was different i came with my son who was in a carseat and was looking for my stuff on my list, i got to the cashier with waiting just foe a minute, and he asked if i found everything i needed, and i said yeah except for baking soda, which i thought they didnt have so i would need to go to a different store, and be said we do have it, i can have someone bring it over here, and i was happy because it saved me a trip to another store, next a young lady packed my produce in some bags, and then looked at my cart which had a carseat in, asked if i needed help out and i said yes i do. And she helped me with the bags and took it too my car, which was a huge help because i had to carry a carseat to my car too. I was very pleased with this service today! Keep it up crew! Plus, I swear the aisles are really narrow and always jammed full of people. I love the one on SE 39th (Cesar Chavez...whatever). I am a big fan of TJ's though - don't get me wrong. Wow! It's just like my little Trader Joe's on 39th, but it's BIG, and the aisles are like freeways instead of dirt roads, all my stuff is there! I CAN EVEN PARK IN THE CLOSEST ROW EVERY TIME! I haven't ever had to wait in line! It's like my fantasy of everyone in the world disappearing (but all the electricity and stuff staying on) so I can go shop my little post-apocalyptic heart out with no pesky humans to get in my way. Ive been coming to this Trader Joes for a while now, and I should have posted this review after this incident, but I try not to be petty. So let me start by saying I am a 45 yr old disabled veteran. So here is the deal, I had my items and ready to go and was in one line, a guy at another register says I got you over here, I say "its cool man, by the time I get over there she, meaning the cashier in my line will be done anyway, besides, shes cuter than you anyway". Now I said this in a friendly and playful manner, and apparently this upset the both of them. I get to the cashier and I say "how are you today" and she blatantly ignores me. I say, hellloooo.....she still ignores me, mind you she is ringing up my things at this point. So I say " are you deaf or ignoring me on purpose"? Continues to ignore me, I start getting really upset at this point. The "guy" in the line next to her says "what you said was INAPPROPRIATE". Im like im sorry, since when is a compliment a reason to disrespect your elders and be rude to a customer? This dude rings a bell and yells out, we have a situation on line so and so, like I said, mind you im a disabled vet with anxiety and social issues already, just being out and speaking to anyone is difficult for me. A so called manager comes over and stupid me thinking he is going to deal with his two rude employees has the nerve to chastise me!! So MONTHS have gone by since this happened, and since then, two of my female friends have commented to this girl about how cute she was or complimented her hair, without a similar response ( discrimination ). But today really put the nail in the coffin, Im with a friend that helps me with errands sometimes due to my social anxiety, and I mentioned this particular cashier before we enter the store, well my friend had to use the restroom, so I was done paying for groceries and was already back in my vehicle when she arrived. She says yes you were right about that girl, I overheard her badmouthing you to another employee on my way out, said "oh you missed HIM" but he wasnt causing a scene this time. This is discrimination at its finest, she SHOULD have been fired for acting this way, but nothing happened. I will now be contacting a lawyer since I now have two separate witnesses to her behavior, and filing a discrimination law suit. Congrats "Traitor" Joes, you hire rude and entitled brats to deal with customers. read more

I have been shopping at Trader Joe's off 39th & Holgate since they opened and had a horrible experience with returning their goat cheese that molded soon after I purchased it (unopened). I made cheese and if properly packaged and not opened will keep for a very long time, more than a couple of weeks. I was treated by the "Manager" very rude and accusatory. I was not going to go back but I did and I purchases their pickled beets, it was rancid and disgusting. I will no longer shop at TJ's, they are unethical, they have gotten in trouble for many unethical practices including putting returned red meat back on the their shelves. Be careful for their "Feel Good" mentality, they are not that. I am going to look into action against the TJ Scam! read more
