I've been coming to Mai at Tran's Barber Shop for some time now. I absolutely love her. I discovered her by accident while trying to consolidate all of my personal care services into my general area several years back. She does a great job, is very reasonably priced, and is normally very readily available (she is typically off Mondays and is gone maybe once a year for a longer period to visit family). The space definitely has an old school vibe, and there's really nothing sexy about it, but everyone is friendly. There is an ATM on site as only cash is accepted. I especially enjoy the straight blade shave at the end when Mai cleans my neck of stray hair. It always feels so good with the hot shaving cream. read more

I had initially visited another barber shop in Bethesda but was not pleased with the result as my haircut was not even and the hair stylist did not have any recommendations when I asked or looked fully comfortable as he was performing the task. It was in part my fault as i did not share my observations at that time as I wanted to give him the benefit of doubt and thought that maybe it would look better after i got home and washed my hair. After confirming it was the haircut, I went to Tran's to see if he could fix it, and not only did he take his time and correct it but surprised me at the end by telling me that no payment was necessary and it was "on the house". I walked in last winter after work, and an Asian man cutting hair screamed at me on site...and asked what I wanted? Someone else was calmly cutting a white gentleman's hair. At that point I knew the service level was based on their perception of the customer, I left and reported the business to the county's office of business affairs. Clear discrimination by their business, which is illegal and violates the 1964 Civil Rights Act. If you're black, you're not welcome there, and they show it. Was in the area, needed a haircut, this place didn't disappoint. It was my first visit so I didn't know what to expect. It's always questionable when you're traveling and need a haircut, but any time I'm in the area now this will be my go to spot. Staff was very friendly and it's apparent the barbers take pride in their work and the focus is on giving a quality cut. Jack was my barber and he did a great job on my hair. Got what will be my last haircut here the other week. The cut was ok, but the newer staff just isn't as good as my "go-to" favorites that I experienced in the past years. They are not as nice, don't take their time like the previous barbers, and don't perform the finishing touches (like eyebrow trim) that I used to get. And, their prices keep creeping up. I used to make the 45 minutes drive up to Bethesda for my monthly visit, but no more. I'll miss the old barbers at Tran's, but I won't miss the new Tran's. read more

I came in on Sunday afternoon of September 8, 2019 and got Bob to cut my hair. Bob was quick but obviously not skilled in creating fade haircut. At the barbershop, i thought it was ok. But when i came home and upon close inspection at the back of my head, I got an irregular and sloppy haircut. The terrible type of haircut that you'll be ashamed to be seen by any human being. Jack and Tran alway take good care of me but let's focus on Jack. Jack takes the extra time to make me feel extra comfortable in the chair. No talk and all action and I have changed from Tran to Jack which means a lot. For the comment below about Jack. As a military retiree you can either get a close fade or a close taper...they are two different types of cuts with two distinct results. Know what you want. Jack is great! read more

I have been there twice and I will say one of the best things about it is that it is open seven days a week. That is pretty convenient. On the flip side like most small barbers they only take cash. I will start with the good part. They are very detail oriented and use the warm shaving cream and straight blade to do the finished. That is always a nice plus. However, that does not come close to out weighing the bad job they do actually cutting hair. I rarely leave hair reviews because I get something so simple. I ask for a 4 on the sides and the back and a 5 on top. It is very simple and I have gone to Great clips and super cuts and they have done a perfectly fine job. I was seated in the middle chair which had a major disadvantage of not having a mirror where you can see what they are doing. When he finished it was clear that he used something shorter then a 4 on the sides and the back. Then when I got home I noticed he left very front top longer. Something that can only be described as a not so terrible version of Brazilian Ronaldo's haircut in the 1998 World Cup. Needless to say I was not happy. The other downside is that it is 17$ a haircut. There is many better barbers nearby that are better at the same price and many that are just as good if not better that are way cheaper. read more

When I got there looking for Tran he was already busy with a client so Tony took care of me and I couldnt be happier with my haircut. The place was cash only so I thought I was in trouble when I wanted to pay with my credit card but Tony was very comprehensive of the situation and let me go to find and ATM and come back !! Bon Lord knows finding a good barber is tough. I've had many bad haircuts in the past and once you've found a good barber who knows how to cut hair, you stick with them. I've been a loyal customer to Bon for over 4 years. Until just over a week ago he used to work at a barber shop a few blocks away. The owner told me that he'd recently parted ways. I thought I'd have to find a new barber, but out of "shear" luck after having lunch on St. Elmo Ave, who do I see but my guy Bon standing on the street in front of Tran's Barber Shop. Feeling elated that I wouldn't have to find a new barber, I thought I'd post a review. Just as many others have mentioned, Bon is my reason for heading to this barbershop. I have been here 3 times now and Bon always does an amazing job and is very focused on making sure you are happy. Just tell him what you want and he will make it happen. As for the shop, there isn't anything negative that I have experienced. Usually upon arrival someone always greets me and when I am leaving they thank me for coming in. Beyond that, the shop is very clean. This guy is thorough. I got the 'new customer' $11 special, normally it's $14. He trimmed my hair as I wished, then surprised me by smoothing the sides and neck with shaving cream and a barber's blade. First time I ever had that! Don't use Jack!!! Walked in asking for a trim and a low fade w a taper the back. Left with a high and tight, and almost no hair.....burned to all hell from the razor / machines they used. Jack proceeded to " cut " my hair and did a great job butchering it. I've been to many barber shops, I've never had a fade this bad. Patchy, lines, it was a mess. Tran the owner, attempted to fix Jack's work and it was bit better. Tran apologized, and said " only pay for the beard shave ". I wasn't going to pay a dime, but I get this is how people make a living. Gave him a 20 and literally ran out. To make this whole experience great, I had a small child literally belting and crying at the top of his lungs for the near hour I was there. Left with a jacked up head and a banging headache. I'll never go here again. I went straight to another barber shop to fix the so called haircut I got, and even the barber fixing my hair said he's never seen such a horrible haircut. As some who's very particular about their hair, please do yourself a favor. Don't go through the torture of a bad haircut and painful shave. Look at elsewhere read more

He understood exactly what I wanted and gave me the best haircut I've received in over a year. The price was very fair, too. Love this place! Tran has been my barber for almost 20 years. He started cutting my hair when I was in middle school and every time I've gone to someone else I've been disappointed. All of the barbers in the shop are experienced and do a good job. The customers are mainly men and children, but I've seen a couple of women getting their hair cut there over the years. I've recommended Tran's shop to family and friends and almost all of them have become regulars. I strongly suggest checking this place out if you need a barber. $16 for a cut and cleanup with the straight razor. Cash only. read more
