This was our first time using an in-home euthanasia service. It was a tough decision and my husband and I debated if it was the right thing to do. When we called, I believe, Kim, answered the phone with so much sweetness and kindness. She was patient and answered all of my questions and concerns, all through my tears and sniffles. I called on a Friday afternoon and booked our appointment for Sunday afternoon. She sent clear email instructions and told us to call for anything. Dr. Justin Altman showed up at 2:30pm on the dot. He came in with a comforting confidence. He sat with us and let our Big Black Bear, Rossi, the sweetest 14 year old Black Lab, warm up to him. It didn't take long, as Rossi loved everyone. He was a gentle giant. Justin saw the large mass on his front left leg and immediately said bone cancer as well as explained the quick decline he must have had. He asked us questions about Rossi's health and behavior and reassured us it was the right decision, we NEEDED to hear this from a professional, as the cancer had most likely spread elsewhere in his body and the mass would not go away. Once he explained all of this, we were ready to proceed. My husband and Justin easily moved Rossi onto his bed. Justin explained the process, and allowed us all the time we needed. The sedative that would kick in and relax him and take away his pain, and then the euthanasia injection. He gave us privacy to say our final goodbye after he had checked that his heart had stopped beating. He returned with a small stretcher to carry out Rossi's body to his car. His wife Robin would receive Rossi's body for aquamation. A three week process. We had filled out the form prior to the euthanasia so Rossi could start right away. We picked him up in Lakeside and was given a paw print and a beautiful brown box with his remains. Kim, Justin, and Robin were extremely professional and sympathetic. We said goodbye to my soul cat Stanley 6 weeks ago with Transitions. The whole experience was as positive as something like that could be, and far better than my expectations. Our cat was (omg in past tense now...) antisocial, scaredy-cat since she came to live with us, and that was the part we were most worried about. Didn't want to take her anywhere to stress her out. Josh (if my recollection of your name is wrong, I'm sorry...), the vet, came in the house, Misti, our cat, didn't run or hide but was eager to check him out like she knew why we were there. He set his gear up, and quick shot in butt to make her sleepy. He made her lie down, we all watched surrounding her, playing nice music touching her, and talking to her. He gave the second injection in her hind leg vein after shaving a little. It was really nice peaceful ending for Misti. I called around animal hospitals and other euthanasia services here in SD and OC. The place we thought sounded wonderful wanted to charge $970 with individual cremation and the ashes returned to us. Some places didn't let us keep the body (we took Misti to Humane Society to be group cremated for $15.) Another place wanted to charge late in the day fee $170, for appointment after 4:30. Transitions Vet charged me $300 (as advertised on their website) plus coming out to North County fee of $75, no after hour fees nor weekend up-charge even though our appointment was at 5:30pm on Saturday. I was really struggling with learning I was going to have to immediately euthanize my beloved Cane Corso after learning he had cancer throughout his organs. I want to send you my deepest sympathies. If you are in a hard situation I will cut to the chase. You are making the best decision you possibly can given your circumstances. Your pet and the experience will be vastly better than shuttling your sick pet to the scary vet. It is worth the money. It is truly the most loving way to go about this difficult task. This service allows you to be with your loved one, and grieve in your own personal way. If you have the funds, do it this way. You will be giving your pet a true gift in their final moments. Now, if you are looking for more detail I will share my experience below. It is extremely hard for me to do so, as it is still a fresh and raw sorrow I feel. I am making myself do this because I want to help anyone who is in the situation I was. My beautiful cat Sophia (pics in some of my profile photos) has struggled with FIV. She took her final turn for the worst. Despite my best efforts (vets, heart specialists, plasma transfusions, the whole deal) she was dying and it would be up to me to lovingly give her the relief she so deserved. I was so bereft during this that I could not even call them up. I had to email and text because not a word could escape my mouth. They were so kind and communicated with on terms that were easiest for me. I made an appointment, but as time went by I saw my little love was in increasing pain. They accommodated me, and moved the appointment earlier in the day. A vet will arrive. He will go through the steps that he will take. You get to decide when to do it. It is a very personal service. Below I will go into a bit more detail. Please don't read it if it will upset you. I can promise you that having a vet come to your home is the best choice you can make. Alright. What happened in my experience: Again, I was told the process. I was also able to control a lot of the timing. Once I was ready (I quickly was ready if only to save her from more suffering) we went through the following steps. The first shot puts the animal into a twilight sort of phase. They will still breathe and be there, but they won't know what is going on. They won't feel pain, they won't feel fear. They won't even know what is going on. If you are looking into this service then you know that is a blessing. You are allowed some time to be with them. Our vet was very understanding and did not rush us at all. I so much wanted to spend more time with her, but I knew the best thing was to free her. So after a few minutes, and my last words to her, he administered the second shot. (There are various ways to deliver this to the animals system. My cat wasn't able to get an IV so a shot it had to be) She wasn't aware of anything. The cocktail works quickly. Be ready for that. Much faster than you might imagine. I was already ready for this fact but I feel I should warn you as well. Remember that it is a good thing that it does. During this process you are given room and not rushed. You can grieve and hold and be there how you see fit. Once your pet reaches the clearing or crosses the rainbow bridge (as folks like to say). You are given time with them. Which honestly sounds horrific at first. But I was so thankful not to be rushed. I was thankful for the time to just feel her fur, and grieve. I, don't really know how to explain it. This bit of time is obviously for you. I never thought in a million years it would mean so much to me. I opted for single cat cremation (just her remains). You are given the option to have the remains sent, pick them up from a vet, or pick them up from the business they use. You will have many options to best fit your needs. Her ashes were sent to me quickly. I wish I could tell you more. I think they take a paw print and some fur keepsake... I can't bring myself to open the box at this time. So, that update will come much, much, later. I can't even open up sympathy cards and the like. Safe to say I'm truly messed up over losing her. The grief I feel so so vast. I have no way to communicate it. These aren't just animals, they are gifts that enrich our lives. The loss is so momentous. Even feeling all of this. I believe I made the right decision. This service is so personal and so much less stressful than a trip to the vet. Plus, with COVID restrictions, you might not even be allowed to say goodbye in the final moments at the vet. It was important to me to be there. From start to finish (again still have opened the box of remains yet) they were truly compassionate. My heart goes out to anyone who is in this position. It is so sad and it is so ridiculously hard. Doing this at home really is the most personal and caring way to do it. If your finances allow, spend the damn money. Don't even think twice. read more

I am writing this in hopes it provides comfort and reassurance in a time where you feel conflicted with a decision that is so difficult to make. I was blessed in life to have my 4 legged fury baby, Kobe. I had rescued him along with his twin sister when they were only 2 years old. They are MY KIDS. Kobe had been by my side through all life's journeys so when I saw him declining this year (canine cognitive disorder), it broke my heart. Physically he was intact (still went on walks and appetite was good). But mentally and emotionally he was suffering. I look back at pictures and within the last 4-6 months he lost a significant amount of weight. Yes, he was still walking around but it was more of a pacing around type of walk- not out of fun. He appeared anxious, Shiba screaming throughout the day (something he never did), awake throughout the night, bumped into anything, would get stuck in corners where he could not navigate his way out of and would even walk away from me when I would pet him (unusual because he loves being petted and would jerk my hand when I would stop). Yes, physically he was still with me but he was merely "existing" and no longer LIVING It took me a few more months to come to terms with the fact that I was keeping him alive for my sake. Even bought him calming chews in hopes he would feel better but it was just masking and delaying the inevitable. I believe things happen for a reason and I was home on a day I shouldn't have been. It can be such a hard decision about when to put down a pet and it was very much this way with my kitty. Transitions was amazing. I was unsure of my decision and one of the vets gave me a call and discussed my situation with me, which really helped to give me perspective. On the day of, Justin arrived and what an amazing man he is. He also helped me with the guilt I was feeling about putting my kitty down. I waited way too long with my first cat and I was worried I was not waiting long enough with this second one. He shared some things that really had me see that I was doing the right thing for her. He passed peacefully at 4:30 PM 11/17/2022 Rainbows to Heaven was referred to us in order to put to rest a quality of life significantly not our buddy. This has been a tough review for me to write. Our 15-year-old dog, Dandi, has been suffering for some time from the progressive effects of degenerative myelopathy plus a variety of other physical issues that were causing him a lot of pain. Justin from Transitions made one of the worst days of my life into one of the most peaceful. He is so kind, calm, understanding and even funny. I never felt rushed, he explained exactly what he was doing and assured me my sweet baby would not be in pain. Of course I was second guessing my decision to put Baca down, but Justin lovingly let me know that I was doing the right thing. His wife will take care of Baca's ashes and I'm just so glad the process was so smooth. Even as he put Baca's body in the back of the car, it was cushioned with pillows and stuffed animals.
