The Von Trapp family lodge is a gorgeous establishment still ran by one of the Von Trapps. The uniforms of the staff are cute, and the layout of the lodge is timeless and elegant. The food was all farm to table, and you could tell that everything came by hand. I loved the food that I had there. The downside is that the food took extremely long to come, and service was terribly slow as well. read more

I was 11 years old when the Sound of Music first opened in theatres, and I've been a huge fan of anyone or anything related to that movie or period in history. The fact that the story was true and that this famous singing family settled in Stowe, VT because it reminded them of their homeland, well, it's been a long-time dream of mine to visit the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe and feel the connection in person. And so I did... in July 2025, some SIXTY years after seeing the Sound of Music. We actually didn't stay here, which seems kind of odd considering what a fan I am. Now that I know how much there is to do in Stowe... and at the lodge itself, perhaps if we come back with plans to stay longer, I would stay here. The Von Trapp Family Lodge has so much to offer a person... whether one stays here or not. These are some of the activities: 1. Hiking 2. Mountain biking 3. Skiing / Cross-country skiing 4. 6 of us met here for a friends reunion and loved our time here. Rooms were large and comfy, plenty of eating options and Dailey led tours of their resort and family history. Enjoy as many as you possibly can, they are free with your resort fee. Very quiet and relaxing and plenty of open family/rec/reading rooms for all Ages!!!! This review is for the paint and sip event (2 hours) offered at the Von Trapp Brewery. It is located on the 2nd floor and next to the observation deck overlooking the brewing of lager and other beers on site. Natalie our art instructor guided us each step of the way to ensure that we had a cow painting to call our own. Since the class was on the smaller size, she was able to slow it down and give us tips on how to fix our paintings if we messed it up. For the price (currently $60ish), it includes a charcuterie board with lots of cheese options. read more

We had a lovely two night stay at the Trapp Lodge. I'm a sucker for historical hotels and especially those that boast the views (and inspiring story) of the Sound of Music. I can easily see why the Von Trapp family was attracted to this slice of America and how it reminded them of their homeland in Austria. The views are unbeatable and it's so peaceful at the lodge. We gobbled up several of the activities including swimming in the fitness center, the Von Trapp historical tour, dinner at the brewery up the road, visits with the cows and sheep and a hike to the chapel in the woods. We also enjoyed our Austrian-American-esque breakfast buffet. It's around $22 per head but worth it if you linger and soak in the views (highly recommend the overnight oatmeal and fluffy scrambled eggs). This hotel was on the pricier side for us but I felt that we made the most of our stay. The room was clean and well-appointed. It also didn't hurt that the whole experience had me feeling like we were on a trip to southern Germany or Austria. If we had more time, I would have played tennis, caught one of the yoga classes and popped into the Austrian cafe up the road. read more

What a beautiful property! The views are amazing along with the grounds. We stayed here on our annual hiking weekend and there was so much to do in the area. Resort itself has pools, plenty of outdoor space, animals on premise, hiking and walking trails, and a brewery right down the road. All of the staff we encountered always had a smile on their face and were very helpful. The only complaint we had is we really wanted to do the lodge tour but it was sold out when we arrived. A lot of the events did not coincide with our few days there so we missed out on a lot of the extra activities they offered. We didn't realize these activities were included with our Resort fee so I did not know I could have booked them in advance. But otherwise, I highly recommend staying at this great Resort. read more

The Hills are alive... wait, that's just in the movie. We were up in Stowe fro a family wedding being held at the Trapp Family Lodge and truly enjoyed every moment. I'd have to say it was one of the loveliest weddings we'd had the opportunity to participate in. Everything was top notch and the staff at the Lodge delivered the goods. We had a ton of questions about this, that and a third thing and he answered all of them with Trappist poise and grace. I recommend immediate promotion ahead of peers. [Shoutout to our server Michelle too!] BILL at Cows: Bill was a solid tour guide - kept the group engaged and safe, clearly knows the cows like the back of his hand. Ditto the history and lore of the grazing areas and the Highland program in general. You want a friendly, knowledgeable guy for this role and he fits the bill. (Hehe.) The perfect place for a winter get away! And from the looks of it, a perfect place for a getaway during any season... The property is huge with miles of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The trails are well groomed and you can tell they take great care of everything around the property. We stayed in the main lodge and our room was spacious yet cozy with amazing views of the mountains. There was a great balcony which would be lovely if it hadn't been 11F out. Brrrr! They offer a tasty brunch buffet, and we enjoyed dinner in the main lodge one evening. Located a quick 5 minute drive from downtown Stowe, it's easy to venture into town for a meal. We went on the Meet the Cows tour which was a fun experience. There are lots of cute Scottish cows on the property and the tour was a good way to learn more about the cows as well as some history about the Von Trapp family. I hope to be back one day to experience what the place had to offer during the warmer times of year. read more

The experience was great, however the room we stayed in was less than perfect. The mirrors were located in a manner that made them hard to use. The shower by having a glass wall without a closure allowed water to get on the bathroom floor. The door to the outside balcony did not have a working lock. The staff were wonderful and extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The meals were excellent. The tours were plentiful and extremely interesting and informative. We were early for our reservation for dinner at Von Trapps bier house so decided to go for a cocktail in the main lodge . The front desk person was lovely and very helpful stating we could stroll the first floor and downstairs to see photos, which was so enjoyable. Then we proceeded to the lounge ,everyone was on the patio but due to our wheelchair we were unable to get there. We chose a nice table by the window. The bartender and another employee were casually conversing and never acknowledged us . We sat for a while then I went up to the bar to ask if they had a drink menu , he handed me one but never said we can help you in a minute, again waiting at our table for a while. Once we decided on our cocktail I went up to the bar to order. He poured 2 wines. Nothing which was difficult to make. Then flipped the machine around to me which prompted me to tip which I did . He saw me trying to balance 2 wines my wallet and the notebook drink menu and never offered to help back to the table. We are in our 70s and we expected reasonable service especially form an established venue. I tried calling restaurant manager twice and went online to speak to someone regarding this prior to writing this review but no one got back to me. read more

I will start with the few positives about this place. The property itself is really nice and well kept, but is extremely hilly which is not advertised well and is something that should be kept in mind while planning to travel, especially if you are older and struggle with rough terrain like at the Von Trapp Lodge. The tours were enjoyable, and was one of the only things my grandfather really enjoyed on this entire trip. Food on property was good, but was way too overpriced. We traveled to the lodge for my grandfathers 80th birthday as a family, and were looking forward to a good time, especially since he is a super fan of the Sound of Music films. We arrived with high hopes and were let down in every which way by this resort. First off, the service, besides maids in room service, were just awful. Upon arrival, the front desk staff told us that they changed our reservations and rooms around, despite the fact that we made them over a year and a half in advance. They separated the entire family, putting three rooms in the 400s and then one room on the other side of the lodge in the 200s when we had specifically booked 4 rooms all alongside each other. The service was terrible when we tried to have them fix this huge issue, and they made it seem almost as though it wasn't their problem to deal with. Conveniently, there was a wedding being held there the night we arrived, and we have heavy suspicion that our relocation was in relation to this wedding party that came in. The entire lodge itself is full of stairs and is like one big maze for the people staying there to navigate. It was exhausting for my grandparents, and heavy limited their activities while on the trip. The amenities seem nice, but aren't as advertised. Everything the place has to offer is spread out across the entire 2,600 acre property. The pools and hot tub are a big walk down a huge hill, and the pickleball courts are even further down another huge hill that was super inconvenient for the elderly and physically challenged in our family. No one wanted to play pickleball because it was so ridiculously far away, and essentially inaccessible. The disc golf, meeting cows, and meeting goats, etc. are anywhere between a 0.5 - 1 mile of a travel, so don't plan on walking anywhere because that distance once again includes tons of hills and ups and downs that aren't easy to get by. One of our rooms occupied by our family had a huge mishap, as the ceiling began to fall apart and water came into the room and soaked the clothes of someone traveling with us. The leak caused a huge issue and forced our family to once again have a relocation of rooms. All of a sudden, 4 rooms right next door to each other became 4 rooms on 3 different floors. Once again, only the maid staff was actually helpful in this situation, and they helped clean the mess and offered to wash the wet clothes. Then in the room I stayed in, the door to the patio broke from the inside, which basically made it inaccessible from the inside, unless you wanted to go all the way around the building to sit outside, and then do the same to come back inside. We alerted the staff multiple times about this, and not a single person ever came to fix the issue. One morning of our stay was also ruined by the hot water being shut off for hours at a time.Mind you, all of these troubles occurred in the modern wing of the lodge built in 2000, so I can only imagine what it was like for people staying in the older rooms from the original, rebuilt lodge in the early 1980s. In all the issues we had, not once was the front desk staff ever any help at all, and the manager was always conviently in some meeting or conference and avoided speaking with us. Almost nothing is actually included in your stay, there were fees implemented for basically anything you may have wanted to do, outside of the tours they offered. The fees were not cheap at all, the meals are expensive, and nothing is super affordable, so the fact that we paid thousands to stay at this place, but then had to pay more to actually use the amenities was absurd. I would never recommend staying here to anyone in my entire life, even if you enjoy the movies. My family travels a decent amount as well, so we have comparisons from countless other trips, and all of us more or less agreed that this is hands down one of, if not the worst places we've ever stayed at in terms of value for the price paid. I will also note this, in all my families travel, we have never had a stay somewhere that was bad enough to prompt us to write a review, so I legitimately created a Yelp account just to write this. I want this to be a guide for people who consider this place in the future, because if the things I listed dont bother you than go right ahead! You dont have to use this review as a direct reason not to go, but I do urge you to heavily consider these things before you hand youre money over to the Von Trapps, as this was just our personal experience with the place. read more

On a trip to VT with my family, we decided to stop into the Trapp Family Lodge and the Beer Hall to see the lodge and beautiful grounds. Let me preface this by saying that every single person we met on our trip was so incredibly kind and friendly, EXCEPT at the Trapp Lodge. Not just 1, but every single staff member at the lodge, outdoor center, and beer hall that I encountered was either cold, rude, or straight up didn't even acknowledge me or my family at all. It was as if we weren't even there. So glad we didn't stay here because the place wasn't even nice, certainly not worth the high price tag to stay there. Not worth the stop. read more

Went here with my parents as part of our Vermont Vacation on August 28th 2023. We didn't stay at the hotel or anything but i'm sure that it is beautiful, especially if one is overlooking the mountains. We drove and parked in the parking lot, and Will say "The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music", in other words, the mountain view is very beautiful. Unfortunately, there were no tours because it was a monday. Which i was disappointed about actually. We did look in the gift shop, and my mom got a magnet and an ornament. I was considering getting a book about the real maria, but didn't. Restrooms that were located in the gift shop was very clean as well. There also seems to be lots of things to do there, like one can run around the trails, or bike probably too. Definetely a must stop- even if it is just for the views! read more

The Trapp Family Lounge has year-round activities such cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, hiking, mountain biking, tennis, and yoga. You can experience one of there many on site restaurants or special culinary offerings such as tours of the Von Trapp Brewing . My mother researched this place before we came to Vermont and she wanted to visit. The lounge definitely has history behind how the Trapp family came into the United States and how the Trapp Family Lounge all began. In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. In the summer of 1950, they began welcoming guests to a rustic, 27-room family home/lodge. After a devastating fire in 1980, the original structure was replaced by the new Trapp Family Lodge, a striking, 96-room alpine lodge situated on 2,600 acres offering magnificent indoor and outdoor resort amenities. The entire property is owned and operated by the von Trapp family. You can learn all about the von Trapp family history by reading below or taking a tour while staying at our resort. My mother and I toured the hotel but without a tour guide. We did not stay here. We just visited. As we walked into the hotel, it had many artifacts and information about the lounge. The lounge is definitely Austria influenced and the decor really is back in its time. All the furniture was very old fashioned and so was the hotel. It looked liked it was stuck in the past time. The hotel was very clean and the front desk personal was gracious enough to give us a map and marked all the places on the grounds he recommended we should go. The outside is beautiful. It's filled with a backdrop of mountains and sky's that were just beautiful and breathtaking. We rode around on the grounds but we couldn't find anything that was marked because the grounds are so big. It must've took us like twenty minutes alone to get off the grounds. Although we didn't get to see much of we wanted, the experience was wonderful to see the atmosphere and to learn the history behind the Trapp Family. I recommend getting a tour guide. I checked the pricing of the hotel and it's almost four hundred dollars to stay for a night. The complaints I seen on Yelp were mostly due to the rooms not being up to date and the nightly prices don't add up to the rooms. You should definitely do your homework before staying because it might not be your style. read more

While it's still a beautiful property, the staff seems slow to update. The wood stoves in the main living area are now 40 years old, in need of repair/replacement, wallpaper and paint are peeling in MB, etc, little/no handicapped accommodations. Now you can't check in until 4 PM, effectively reducing your "week" from 7 days to 6, all while raising yearly cost. You're now paying more for less. The entire property, except The Villa's (which BTW, are owned and operated independent of TFL) appears to have not been updated since the 80s, yet they're charging prices of today. The rooms are old and extremely dated. There are no king-sized beds! 5 star?? The carpets are tired and worn..pitted from fireplace embers, threads peeling around thresholds, stains around the main entryway, etc. The wooden steps to our guest house are cracked, uneven, not up to Code(!) and have become a hazard. The exterior stain on them as well as on the railings is either gone or badly peeling. Your hands will receive wooden splinters if you don'e exercise caution! I dare say they haven't seen any love since they were built. The furniture! Sofas have torn piping, the living room chair has broken springs as if it were used as a trampoline, that emit a loud BANG every time you sit down. Does anyone ever take note of these things, and inspect them?! The quality of firewood has deteriorated. The woodsheds were always full of perfectly sized oak and maple. This year, they are massive chunks of beech, that are too big to burn and too heavy to tote up to the room. They now require you to complete a pre-arrival agreement/checklist..asking for your car make, year, model, plate#, etc, among other things..just about every personal piece of information about you and who's arriving, except your SS#. On a positive note, internet connecting has been markedly improved..it used to be atrocious until 2023. Trapp's was my parent's favorite place. I have tried to keep that tradition going with my family. Sadly, the experience is not the same. We have seen little change. The entire property is dangerously close to being labeled "run down" on some social media sites. Their own newsletter of March, 2024, includes "A Letter From The Board of Directors" in which I quote "We are hearing loud and clear that we need to replace the sofas, chairs, wallpaper, and put a king-sized bed in the master bedroom." Talk's cheap; actions speak louder than words is most appropriate here! Why have the principals procrastinated to such a point that the situation has become so dire? For us, it's becoming less of a good experience and value. Consequently, we are contemplating selling our week 6, one of THE most prime weeks of all. My parents were original Guest House owners in 1986. The place was new, impressive, affordable, quality built, with nice furnishings. We along with them looked forward to returning, and did so for many years. Times have changed and in our opinion, Johannes, Sam, Treg, Christina, now Walter, & the Board of Directors have not managed the property intelligently. The turnover rate among staff is inordinately high. They once had a marvelous Executive Chef named "Cody" who left after 2 years. They have been behind the curve resisting change, late to modernize, upgrade, make accommodations for the handicapped, etc. Unfortunately, this is an opinion held by many, including some of our long established Trapp owners/patronizers who have since sold their timeshares. The place looks tired and worn...caulking around the showers shows mold(!), the sofas in the living have torn cushions, radiator covers are dented and smashed, the fireplace inserts are original, outdated, and warped. Walkways are unkept, steps are original and in hazardous condition, outdoor wooden bannisters are rotted at their bases, etc. inviting lawsuits..not if, but when. The quality of firewood was downgraded dramatically about 5 years ago, (ostensibly to save money), and is now nearly junk. Promises heard in shareholders meetings for the past 5-7 years have been routinely broken or mysteriously abandoned. (I'm happy to give examples) In essence, the owners have become viewed with increasing insincerity by our friends...trading on the family notoriety of the 1960's, in lieu of shareholder's wishes, while ignoring deteriorating physical conditions, modern renovations, and popular conveniences. They've bitten the hands that feed them! Sadly, what was once rated a 5-Star resort is now downgraded to 3.6 on Yelp, and appears to be routinely falling. Now we find ourselves paying more than twice the Annual Fee my parents incurred in 1986, PLUS a recently enacted $350 "Special Assessment" annually for the next three years for diminishing returns! It is no longer a promising investment. While we may return, (we'd take a loss if we sold) we can no longer recommend it. There are now considerably better choices in Stowe, and across the nation. Americans of my generation are familiar with the Von Trapp family who emigrated from Austria in the U.S. shortly following the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. While there is a good deal of history concerning the family, many Americans are familiar with "The Sound of Music," which originally opened as a Broadway musical in 1959 starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. However, Julie Andrews starred as Maria in the 1965 academy award winning film that brought national acclaim to the Von Trapps, who by this time were known as the Trapp family. The family actually located in Stowe, Vermont in 1950. The original lodge featured an Austrian theme, and the time-shares were added later. Several members of the family still own the enterprise. The Trapp Family Lodge is a 2,400 acre setting for the nature enthusiast. The Trapp Family Guest House is about one and one-half hours from Killington, VT., the largest ski area in the east. When is the best season to visit the Trapp Family Guest House? Winter, of course for the great skiing. Unless one enjoys the epiphinany of spring or the enrapturement of the Green Mountains in the summer, or unless one must view the ardent fall colors of Vermont. Ideally, one will holiday at the Trapp Family Guest House during all four seasons. I have often expressed my resilient love of the outdoors; my wife enjoys the outdoors, but she also is an avowed shopaholic. The sensitive resolution is to spend some time in Stowe and the many towns and villages that have been designed to appease the shopaholic. If properly planned, there are nearby trails to explore and timing will permit a rendezvous for lunch and dinner. For those of you who have seen the SOUND OF MUSIC you already know a little about the history here. Trapp Family Lodge is a ski resort nestled in 2,700 beautifully maintained acres of land in the lovely town of Stowe Vermont. The resort is on the actual site of the Von Trapp family home, built in 1983 after the original home, built in 1942 burned down in a fire. The year 1942, the family had fled Nazi occupied Salzburg to settle in America. The architecture is very much the design of a typical alpine Austrian ski lodge. Vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, heavy wooden furniture. The place is surrounded by forests filled with many gorgeous trees: Maple, Birch, Apple, Arborvitae, Pine, throughout, plus exquisite gardens of butterfly and hummingbird attracting flora. Trapp Family Lodge is a great place during the winter season as well as summer and autumn, with an abundance of trails to hike, ski, sleigh or cycle. There's a fitness club, pools (indoor and outdoor), restaurant, Bierhall and Kaffeehaus all within walking distance to the main lodge. On day one, join the Trapp history tour. You will actually get to meet one of the children or grandchildren of the original ten offspring of Captain Georg Von Trapp and Countess Maria. Scottish Highland Cattle Tour was a bust. We paid $100 for 4 adults. We walked 1/2 mile to the cows to find a group of folks who parked cars near them and were around them feeding and petting the cows. We were supposed to go in up close to the herd but the cows were expecting food from us so were mooing and seemed agitated so we watched from afar didn't really learn much about them other than to be afraid. Total waste of time and $$ we should have driven down in our car and got a good look at them! read more

We just got home from our 2nd stay at the Lodge with our daughter and her two girls. The girls enjoyed the pool and the many events..They loved it last year so we returned this year. The Guest Houses are very comfortable with great views. The staff is wellcoming and very helpful. Hopefully we can return again next year. read more

The Trapp Family Lodge is what you imagine and dream of when you think of the northeast countryside, especially in the autumn. It's so amazing that the Vontrapp family made this legacy and massive farm out of basically having nothing when they came to the US. This review is about the cow tour, for which I spent $50 for myself and my daughter. It ended up being disappointing since the cows were "in the forest" and the guide told us at the start of the tour that that morning, he couldn't find them. We walked about 200 yards into a field and stopped. We saw one cow (partially) about 50 yards away. Others were further away behind trees. We could hear them but barely see them. (The occasional swishing of a tail was about it.) Other reviews of the cow tour I read online made it seem like you could get up close to the cows and even touch them. Not on this tour. Every time the one cow we could sort-of see turned its head towards us, our guide would make up move further away. We ended up leaving early, as did two other families. My recommendation to the Von Trapp Outdoor Center would be if it's a day when the cows are in the forest-field, let guests know ahead of time and give them an option to reschedule to another day. 2 out of 5 stars. Definitely not worth $50. Would not recommend to others. read more

The history talk was way too drawn out. Narrators repeated themselves. We didn't really "tour anything - we sat in a boring conference room. And then walked less than a quarter mile to a graveyard. To hear more repeated stories.. Thus boil Radiohead have been shortened up 45 min. Trails were nothing spectacular. Nicer places with views for free in town. My husband booked a weekend get away for my birthday over here since the sound of music has been my favorite childhood movie. It was so thoughtful of him. It was a great experience for the most part because the views are stunning. The suite he booked wasn't what we were expecting as we are used to staying at 5-star hotels that are mostly on the more modern, luxurious and clean side when entering the lobby and our first impression of the lodge inside was a bit underwhelming. The views from our balcony were serene and calming however the rooms were quite outdated. I understand that the theme is from that era and it really does feel like you're in the 60's and 70's however a little bit can be upgraded/modified. The lobby definitely needs a face lift as the first impression can be underwhelming. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast but my hubby did not. The breakfast hall definitely needs a revamp for sure. We still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly because we stepped outside of the lodge and explored the surrounding areas and neighboring towns in Stowe. The sound of music/Maria Von Trapp history and tour was nice (quite informative). We met Sam Von Trapp (Maria's grandson) once the documentary ended which was nice. The lodge is very pretty from the outside with scenic views however some tweaking is necessary. The elevators have a strong odor and so do the carpets - with the rates being charged I am sure they can afford to renovate parts of it every year - it's quite pricey to stay at a suite here so upgrades are necessary in my opinion. We went to the coffee house one morning, which was nice and also made a stop for lunch at their beer brewery which was great. I like their gift shop it has some cute stuff. All in all our experience in Stowe was excellent because we enjoyed our stay in Vermont and I am forever grateful to my husband for planning everything so meticulously. Unfortunately, the negatives outweighed the positives. We couldn't enjoy our balcony or even open our windows because of the excessive smoking done by the adjacent room. We talked with the front desk a few times but nothing was done. We spoke to staff upon check out & completed their survey - not one apology. Although the restaurant only had 6 tables occupied, they fell short in all categories during breakfast - a long wait to be seated, cold food, a struggle to get something to drink & obtaining a spoon was near impossible. The catering during a conference was confusing and sad - sitting outside with no lights and served cold food to the wrong people each night (meals were pre-selected ahead of time, so they knew in advance what was needed for each attendee). The positives: the acreage was beautiful, the tour guides were knowledgeable & engaging and some staff were very helpful. read more

We had such a great time here! We stayed for only one night in a family suite. It was expensive, but I was willing to pay it just for a night to be able to experience a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. When we rolled in, we checked in and then took the free shuttle to dinner at the bierhall - that was super nice! After dinner, we walked over to the kaffeehaus and did a sing-along with s'mores. Then we walked back to the lodge. The building itself is very well taken care of, with tons of flowers and a really neat design that feels European. In the morning, we had the breakfast buffet in the main dining room and then took advantage of a number of activities that are included in the price of the stay. We did the cows tour, which was neat to see. Then we did the history tour, which was the highlight including getting to meet Kristina von Trapp, and then we did a hike to the chapel. We also saw sheep and the cemetery where the Captain and Maria plus all the kids are buried. So glad we did this. Would highly recommend. read more

What can I say, after five stays Trapp Family Lodge is simply incredible. In the mountains above Stowe you really get away from it all with magnificent views. Rating mainly for the restaurant - My daughter and I came here for dinner one evening during our trip to Vermont, and while the dinner was good (they even provided our dinner split to separate plates, $2 extra FYI, as we wanted to share our dishes since not that hungry), it wasn't terribly memorable. We started with the watermelon salad - the mint goes wonderfully with the watermelon. Otherwise nothing terribly remarkable about the salad. We then had the salmon with farro, which had good flavor and the farro was done perfectly. Salmon was a bit oversalted, but the crisp skin was delightful. The tarragon sung through the farro and was a good balance for the salt on the salmon. Perhaps some lemon would help cut it. Dessert, linzertorte was a bit heavy, but their puff pastry with cream (can't remember the flavor infusion) and berry drizzle was a solid plus. The property itself is lovely, good trails and beautiful views. Come for the views (but try not to get seated at the tables right by the emergency exit at the restaurant - I get the code and egress needs, but the placement right in the middle window is regrettable for the view the restaurant is celebrating), pay for a day pass for access to the grounds, but we may try the bierhall next time instead of the lodge. read more

Not really fair for 2 stars but I would go with 2 1/2 (yelp). Went here w my soon to be bride for a weekend to get the hell out of dodge and avoid the travers/phish crowd. And this place has always been on my bucket list considering I k ow by heart every single song from the movie. Personal favorite you ask? The hills are alive...duh! Anyway the real reason for the low review is value. This place isn't cheap. In fact it's stupid expensive. So with stupidity I expect certain things. Like rooms that aren't the same as they were in 1981 when the Von Trapps rebuilt this place after the fire. Don't misunderstand...the rooms are clean and decent but circa 1981. You can still keep that Austrian charm, just update them please. And in other reviews people complained about not being able to get 2 cars under the check in spot. Yep! That's stupid too. So we check in and take this crazy walk to our room and the family pics and history on the walls is really cool. We go down to the bar/restaurant/library for a cocktail and some appy's. Decent Manhattan and they've got Bar Hill. So we get the cheese plate for $20 and get a lump of blue cheese and 4 slices of cheddar (?), some bread and a handful of walnuts. Aaahhhh....yeah. That was stupid. So we recuse ourselves to freshen up and the return to the same spot for dinner. The entire restaurant is a bit of a scooby doo ghost town. A note on the decor...same bland worn out look. And the liquor part of the bar was less than inspiring unless you like Whistle Pig rye. So we start w a bib salad that was pre made with these really old looking soggy onion thingys. And we both get the Wiener schnitzel w spatzle. I added to eggs to mine and an extra side of the spatzle. I had already decided I was all about that but perusing the menu there weren't very many choices. Weird. So the food comes out and the schnitzel is cooked perfectly and the spatzle is clearly homemade. But ZERO seasoning or flavor. Ugh. In the morning we walked to the kaffehouse for breakfast. A ham and cheese croissant, an egg and sausage croissant and some coffee. Both croissants were good but served cold. How about you chuck them in a microwave for a sec. Long ago, I stayed at the original Von trappe lodge before it burned down. Last night I thought it would be a big treat to take my seven-year-old granddaughter to the lodge main dining room for dinner. She loves sound of music. I was surprised at how rundown it was. The waitresses, in wrinkled dirndls were pretty good, but the place had no sound of music ambience at all. It could've been anywhere. The original Lodge really put you in an Austrian mood. I got the feeling that it was all about money now. Like one of those huge ocean liners that just crampeople in and don't even resemble a boat they are so huge. It was too bad. read more

My husband and I vacation in Maine every year but wanted a little bit of a change for a portion of it. I love the movie The Sound of Music and have read many books about the family. Knowing this my husband booked this hotel as a special treat for me. I must say the grounds are gorgeous and the view is spectacular. Checking in was a challenge to start with. The driveway doesn't have space for two cars to fit especially if they are big (ours is) and have to unload in uneven payment. The front desk staff were very pleasant and were able to answer my many questions. We got the room we requested overlooking the mountains with a private balcony. When I started unpacking and went to place drink in the fridge there were two dirty towels in there . Everything else seemed fine although it could use some updating. The next day we went out and left a tip and a note for housekeeping for extra towels. Not only did we not get extra towels, she didn't clean the bathroom, empty the ice bucket and left the extra pillows on the floor. I was very disappointed. We ate in the dining room our first night and enjoyed our meal, although expensive. Our server was wonderful. The second night we sat outside since it was beautiful. We ordered the same thing as the night before, however it tasted much different and we didn't enjoy it as much. For the same price you get better service inside than out. read more

What a sweet retreat in the beautiful area on Stowe,VT! The history, heritage and legacy is preserved well in this Austrian inspired retreat nestled in the magnificent white mountains! We were only able to stay one night, however our stay left us with a desire to return with our girls one day! The von Trapp family settled here and turned their home property to a wonderful retreat with hiking, biking and so much more! We stayed in a king room overlooking the mountains. Everything was so peaceful including a walk through the gardens and our short drive into the small town for ice cream!
