We stayed here twice for three nights in a pricey cabin and neither time received any welcome greeting or any hint of hospitality. I know it was October, the end of the season. but I still expected the cabin to be clean. The bathroom mirror was a mess and the baseboard had a season's worth of hair and dust from other guests. There were unwashed coffee cups and a big smear on the picture window. It was disappointin. Breakfasts were tolerable, melon the best part. Under the prior ownership, the lodge cooked custom breakfasts with the best muffins ever (fond memories of French puff and raspberry muffins), not a lukewarm buffet. We had dinner for 6 there one night and it was a debacle. Service could not have been worse. One fellow ordered an appetizer as his main course and it was dellivered to the center of the table for people to share. Plates came out at random so some people ate while others waited. One friend and I waited more than a hour while everyone else finished their dinners. We finally got our two dinners as one of our party finished his dessert. The timing was the worst I've ever experienced. The waitress was incompetent and had to be reminded to bring anything we needed. The dining experience was so wretched that I don't even remember the food. The cold lack of hospitality, the state of our cabin, and the at best mediocrity of our dining has led us to find another place to stay when we visit. We can do better and pay less. read more

We loved our dinner at the Highland lodge! We were staying nearby at the Craftsbury Farm and the owners recommend this spot for dinner. Before dinner, we walked down to Caspian lake with a cocktail from the beer garden and enjoyed the evening breeze. We ate dinner on a beautiful porch that had a prime view of the lake. Our dinner was excellent and extremely well-priced. They had vegetarian options for several dishes, which was perfect for my friend. If you are staying in the area, this local gem is definitely worth visiting! I would recommend making a reservation - You can email, call or text them the day of to confirm a spot! There isn't a ton of phone service in that part of Vermont, so email might be your best bet! read more

This is a really beautiful lovely little inn with a great view. If you like B&Bs, you will totally like it. But for those used to a traditional hotel, I feel obliged to mention that this is not that. You're basically staying in a room in a large house with other people. The night we stayed there, there was a wedding. It would be a lovely place to have a wedding. But if you were not a wedding guest, it was a little distracting and it meant the restaurant wasn't open so we had to go find our own food. Still, we slept well (the bed was really comfy), had a nice time and really enjoyed the scenery. I was somewhat surprised that there was no TV in the room. Not a big deal but just something to know. We did get to partake in the breakfast buffet, which was in some respects very good and in others very not great. So there are a couple of hot options served up by a very nice young man. On that day, it was egg cups (which I found to be super salty) and a bran muffin (which was OK). I didn't finish either. But they did have these awesome little mason jars with blueberry and yogurt and a lovely jar of what I think was homemade granola. That stuff was money. Also noteworthy: there is this amazing field of lupine (purple, pink and white) right next to the inn, which I absolutely loved and took a million pictures of. read more

Highland Lodge We have stayed at Highland Lodge five times over the last two summers and already have this coming summer's stays booked. The Highland Lodge offers a trip back in time with most of the amenities of the present. The lodge is charming and quaintly decorated with modern touches of charging charging stations and Wi-Fi. There is a in-house restaurant and bar and there is often live music. Breakfast comes with your stay and is a delicious way to start your morning. The views from the lodge and the cottages is worth the price of your stay, and you get access to Caspian Lake included with your stay. You can sun yourself on the beach, enjoy paddle boats, kayaks, rowboats, sail boats, paddle boards, canoes or swim out to the float anchored offshore and watch the clouds float by. Although it is a tiny town there is plenty in the vicinity to do. Top on many peoples list beside the lake is Hill Farmstead Brewery, a Mecca for a craft beer connoisseurs. It is also a wonderful place for families to picnic and they often have food trucks serving delicious food. Kids and dogs are welcome. Don't miss the general store in town nor the art gallery. It is Vermont so be prepared to drive a bit but you can find great dining in Harwick as well as West Glover. Although Highland Lodge is pretty much the only game not only in town but in the area, it does not rest on its laurels. The staff are friendly, conscientious and hard-working and you are treated as friends and family and they want you to enjoy your stay as much as you do. Even if there were several hotels in town Highland Lodge would be the only place for our family. If you are visiting Smirkus, you will only be a couple miles away. First review in 2018: This is our second stay at Highland Lodge in just over 2 weeks (dropping & picking up our child from Smirkus Camp) & it has improved in that small amount of time. If you pined over Dirty Dancing as a youth, this gets you close to the feel without the programmed children's activities. Very family friendly & welcoming-you feel like friends coming for a visit shortly after arriving. That doesn't mean you don't have solitude & privacy because there is plenty to be had. Furnishings match the environment-a century old farmhouse & our mattress was probably from that original farmhouse in our first stay, but by our second there was a nice modern mattress. Rooms are spacious enough, plenty of chest & closet space (my pet peeve is no space for clothes). Just note, there are only window fans no AC which is more than fine 95% of the time in northern VT. Breakfast sources local ingredients, a nice selection & is included. What to do? Loads & nothing! You can grab a book, game or puzzle from the Lodge & sit on the front porch enjoying views of Caspian Lake, while the day away in a rocker or head to the private beach & enjoy the shallows, swim out to the float or take the kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, sailboats, paddle boats, row boat or fishing boat for a spin. Or just chill in a beach chair and enjoy the beauty before you. There aware hiking trails, biking, roller skiing & more. After driving around all day finding hikes in rural Vermont, my husband and I were very relieved to find that the restaurant at Highland Lodge was open on the 4th of July. While it was a pricier option than we otherwise would have picked, we thought the holiday deserved a little something special and it was better than having to find a grocery store to get dinner at! We enjoyed a caesar salad, trout cakes, seasonal veggie gratin, and a fabulous brownie sundae while enjoying the lovely weather on the porch. Flavor of everything was really great. Waitresses were very kind. We saw a beautiful sunset and then were lucky enough to spot some private fireworks being set off over the lake! A wonderful way to end the fourth of July as visitors to the lovely state of Vermont. read more

Chad and Elsa make your stay at Highland feel special. The breakfasts are delicious and the cabins overlook the fields and Lake Caspian and are great for families. The short walk through the woods to the Lake is a great adventure for kids. The boat house has everything you would need from SUP, sun fish, paddle boats, row boat, kayaks and life preservers. There is a swim out dock that my kids love jumping off. We look forward to returning again next summer! read more

Upon arriving, the girl at the front desk was not very welcoming. She never got up from the desk and told us to just go to our cabin and key in. There were zero TVs in the cabin and very little WiFi. There was also not a single smoke detector in the cabin!! The bathroom was dirty with cobwebs in every corner. The entire cabin was lopsided and the front stairs/porch are corroding away. There were zero personal touches I was expecting from a cute B&B. We dined there on Thursday (which is their first day of the week the kitchen opens for dinner) and they were already out of chicken and potatoes. I ordered a steak med well and it came out rare. The bartender was great however and made great drinks. We never once heard from the owners or any other staff during our stay. I will say the views are beautiful and the main lodge is really pretty. It would be a great place to go for anyone wanting to unplug but avoid the cabins as they are in serious need of upkeep. And please put in a smoke detector!! read more

One of the most charming places I have stayed. I was greeted at the door by Brittany, who remembered my name at dinner, and my favorite drink! It was like stepping in to a Hallmark Channel Movie! My room, which was right off the main lobby, was clean and comfortable. I ate dinner and had a margarita on the beautiful porch at sunset and it could not have been any better! Heidi the owner is a total sweetheart and her staff are more than accommodating. I can't say enough good things about the friendly staff. It's also really nice to be treated with respect and dignity. I love it when owners are so proud of their business because it just means something when you see an owner totally enjoy what they do, and how they treat their customers, you can't get that just anywhere. The cabins are very clean, private and the grounds overlook the Caspian lake so it's a beautiful setting. If you want to unwind, take a break and relax, this is a perfect location. I live in Brooklyn so this was perfect for me to turn off my devices and just breath in the clear air. The bar is also a lot of fun, I only wish it was open more often but I was there during mud season so it wasn't their peak season and I still felt they attended to every need and want I had. I would strongly recommend this place for anyone, it's romantic, it's private, it's accommodating, its beautiful and Heidi is a proud owner who made me feel special. My sister and her husband also stayed there and they too are so happy with the Highland Lodge. It's a perfect slice of Vermont. I also think it's important to support small business who take pride in what they do. As a business owner myself it's harder and harder to compete because everyone now just wants the cheapest and then it's just a race to the bottom. I seriously can't recommend this place highly enough. My dad was visiting for a few nights and Highland Lodge was a perfect getaway spot. I live nearby in Hardwick but we spent most of our time in rocking chairs on the front porch of the lodge looking out over Lake Caspian. I was so grateful for the little staycation I enjoyed here - complete with paddle boarding, ping pong, nature walking, and a whole lot of just doing nothing in a beautiful place. It was very peaceful (especially since the high season had not started yet) and even though it's on a paved road, it was quiet (hardly any traffic and the lay of the land doesn't amplify the road sounds like in some places). I'm a big plant lover and appreciated that the lupines all over the property were just starting to bloom during our stay. Literally from one day to the next, they went from buds to blooms which is obviously lucky timing but it seemed really magical to me! Dinner was a major highlight - the menu is concise but I bet you would be safe with pretty much any of the choices. My dad and I were both very impressed with what we ordered - the local chicken and steak were incredibly tender and perfectly seasoned, and the roasted veggies and potatoes were flavorful and satisfying. I can't really speak to the room as much because I didn't stay overnight but I thought it was charming and my dad found it comfortable. We stuck to the main house but the cabins are super cute and would probably be perfect for a family or a group of friends. The lodge is cozy and familiar, with comfy furnishings and local art on the walls. It definitely reminded me of family vacations we took when I was a kid and I get the impression the owners really want to maintain that classic feel. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Went here for dinner the other night. Food was ok, nothing fabulous, but for the prices, it should be a lot better - $26 for a chicken breast might be expected at a high-end, big city restaurant, but at a rather average inn in a tiny town, it's exorbitant. All entrees come with starter salads, which used to feature a generous portion of nice, local, organic mixed greens... tonight the salad was a rather stingy portions of somewhat tired-looking conventional lettuce, but the dressing was very tasty, especially the maple mustard. They also serve delicious bread with dinner. I had a cheeseburger, which was cooked nicely. My dining companion had the tofu entree, which was bland and flavorless, and a relatively small portion for the $22 charge. They seem to be cutting costs with the sides as well - kale with the tofu, one of the cheapest winter vegetables available, and a handful of grocery store potato chips and a pickle spear with the burder. I tried the Ishkabible for dessert - brownie ice cream sundae with hot fudge. The hot fudge is excellent, but the brownie tasted like it was a few days past its prime, dry, crumbly, not at all rich, fudgy or chocolatey. As a country inn, one big shortcoming at the lodge is their lack of hospitality. When we arrived at the restaurant, no one greeted us, and we had to seat ourselves at our table. When my dining companion went by the desk in the gift shop, the person there didn't even look up, let alone issue a greeting. Most ridiculous of all: the Lodge is soliciting donations from their customers to update the facility. This is a for-profit, moneymaking endeavor, charging outrageous prices, and they want to squeeze their customers for donations. There are no other dining options in Greensboro, but if you are looking to dine out in the area, skip the Lodge and try Claire's instead, for a truly delicious meal without the request for a handout. read more

Excellent location across the street from Lake Caspian. They have a private beach along with canoe, kayaks and rowboat. The bed was comfortable and breakfasts were suberb. They also have food trucks, beer and Margaritas in Monday's, which was lots of fun. We were not there when they served dinner, which is just a few nights each week. read more

What a wonderful, we didn't even mind the fact that it rained most of the time. We stayed with another couple in the "Wolf Cabin" which was really comfortable and had great instructions about how to regulate the heat. We took advantage of hiking on the property, becoming familiar with the area, and even walked down to the lake. The lodge offered stunning nighttime views as there is no artificial light, we were able to see the name as well as glorious cloud formations. We had dinner at the Lodge the first night, and since I called ahead regarding my dietary restrictions, the lodge was well prepared and my meal was great! Heidi Lauren is a true find, not only as a great host, but is charming as well as talented. Will be back! read more

I want to live here! Highland Lodge is such a beautiful, spacious, comfortable place to stay. I've stayed here twice so far for just one night. We come here with a group and stay here, then ski to Craftsbury Outdoor Center, where we stay three more nights. Two very different types of accomodations so I am always sad to go. Next year, I will extend my stay at Highlands. Loved the breakfast buffet, and Barbara, the server on duty was fantastic! Heidi is so accomodating. I think I'd really like to experience this place in other seasons as well as winter. read more

I was there last summer and we had a fabulous time, dinner on the beach and somehow the same lady was doing breakfast in the morning. We felt like we were at our family's home. I think it was Ann was the cook. We came back recently and found she wasn't there and the food is terrible! Service was horrible and a manager Brittany is probably in the wrong business. The Highland Lodge is a great place! A real institution! I highly recommend it. And, while I realize these are challenging times, the food served for dinner was not good. Quinoa bowl was tasteless, Jasper Hill Mac and Cheese was also quite disappointing. It was surprisingly very bland. And, the burger was too well done. In addition wine portions were quite small. It's appropriate that during the pandemic that plastic cups are used but they didn't serve you very much. If the food were better, it has the potential to be a hot spot like it was in the good old days. read more

Older property, whose main building began life as a hilltop farmhouse well back in the century before last, decorated and furnished tastefully, with respect for its origins. Most attractive setting. The feature I liked best was the private beach on Caspian Lake, less than a ten-minute walk from the lodge, with watercraft available free to guests. Heidi Lauren, the owner, is very much in evidence and sincerely concerned for guests' comfort. Could anything be improved? Given that Highland Lodge positions itself in the middle and not in the upper range of the market, it would be hard for it to offer guests more than it already does. It would be a plus, for example, if the bar were open longer hours, for those coming in thirsty off the trail in the middle of the afternoon or off the water at the end of a long summer evening. read more

I took my family of 5 to Vermont for the first time this Summer and we had a genuinely magical dream vacation while staying at Highland Lodge. My husband and I researched air bnbs in the area for a month prior and all of them seemed slightly off, too expensive or a little creepy, but we were hesitant to book the Lodge because it seemed out of our budget at first. All of our close friends who are locals recommended Highland Lodge though so we stayed decided to save money by staying with friends one night and then staying there rest of the week. I'll never forget the night we checked in- there was the most charming handwritten sign on the front door of the iconic porch that explained that no one was in the office because they were having a free barbeque for the guests down at the beach! We stayed in the *Mamet* cottage, (aptly as we came from Chicago) It was immaculate- and nestled on a high ridge overlooking Caspian Lake, ( insanely beautiful view!) and as night gathered our children were enchanted by the brilliance of thousands of fireflies. Breakfast the next morning was not only delicious, fresh, all handmade and FREE, but a wonderful experience chatting with the genuinely warm and dedicated staff. It was like walking into a Norman Rockwell painting. Then, we went to THE BEACH! People, this beach is so incredibly lovely, with every manner of FREE kayak, pontoon, boat, toy, paddle boards, lounge chair, (and a lovely floating dock for us to swim out to!!) all FREE! It was the pinnacle of the classic east coast American summer experience, right down to the folk paintings and vintage drink coolers in the boat house. I was joking that it felt like we were on the French Riviera. That day we spent with our children swimming, lolling and messing about in boats was one of the very happiest days we've had as a family. Our youngest describes her trip to Vermont as " All of her wildest dreams coming true"- and Highland Lodge had everything to do with that. My husband is here to chime in, he is saying the care and professionalism of the staff were excellent, and the epic set up of the scenery remarkable. In the end the free breakfast feasts and the epic beach entertainment made it a very reasonable price for a family on a more modest budget like ourselves. This really is a great place to stay. My wife wanted to go to Northern Vermont, she spent summers at her grandfather's place growing up. We rented Grace Cabin for three nights for our wedding anniversary, and she could not have been happier. The breakfast there is terrific! We had dinner one night in the restaurant, and were very pleased. Things to do in the area include Willey's Store, a great pizza place up the road, oh and the world's best brewery about two miles away. beeradvocate.com ranks Hill Farmstead Brewery as the #1 brewery in the world, and who am I to argue? We made a trip over to Lake Champlain and did a lunch cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen - great trip, very reasonable price. Hour and a half boat ride, and a good lunch - $35 per person! Also try Parker Pie for a great evening, good food and more of that Hill Farmstead beer on tap. read more

Just got back from a beautiful stay at Highland Lodge. After visiting Hill Farmstead (which is super close), we were pleasantly greeted by Heidi Lauren and given the keys to our room: "Snowroller". The room was a tad small for us but it added to it's charm. We toured the library area, the dining room, and the game room before a private beer tasting I planned for my husband's birthday in the bar. Heidi Lauren brought us out some delicious complimentary snacks. We really enjoyed chatting with her while we sampled some of the local brews. After, we drove to get pizza at Parker Pie, a great recommendation. When we got back to the room we watched Netflix on my husband's phone. They don't have tvs in the rooms but great wifi. Bed was super comfortable. Complimentary breakfast of bagels, baked goods and Vermont sausage with various juices, coffee and tea. Will definitely stay again.
