It is considered one of the best steakhouses in the world for a reason! The Bistecca alla Fiorentina was PERFECTION. So tender, it almost melted in your mouth... and was seasoned PERFECTLY. Served on a sizzling plate, so that if still a little too red for your taste, you can cook it a little more. The roasted potatoes were also HEAVEN. Every bit of care and attention went into the preparation of this meal. The Carbonara al Tartufo also did not disappoint. Pasta was perfect and the sauce was delectable. We were wrapping up our honeymoon in Italy by spending a few days in Florence, and we heard good things about this restaurant, particularly their steaks. I had to get a Florentine steak while we were in the city, so we decided to make a reservation. Our day turned out to be very busy so we reached out to change our reservation time and they were very accommodating. When we arrived at our rebooking time, we were promptly seated after they verified our green pass info (COVID vaccination record). We ordered the best steak I've ever had in my life. First of all we came in with high expectations from their reputation. Well they exceeded it. It started with our server. He was eager to help and finally we just let him bring us what he thought was best. He brought the steak Chianina which is the certified Tuscan beef. It was cooked perfectly! During my January 2023 trip to Italy, I made it to Trattoria dall'Oste a total of three times, at two locations. We tried different things on each visit and really enjoyed ourselves. The steak was fantastic - and a 1 KG Fiorentino steak is great to share among 3 people, if you're ordering a bunch of sides and getting dessert. We also tried tartare three different ways, and was happy with all of them. To top it all off, service was very good on all three visits. I plan to return and heartily recommend. read more

Very disappointed by the service and the meal. It was clear that we've been treated unfairly due to our Asian appearance. We ordered €170 worth of food and despite that, we kept being asked "if we are done" about one hour in (we didn't even take that long!) while we were obviously still working on the food (sizable meat left on the platter, my family was still working on the bread, etc.). This may be because it was getting to their popular dinner time and they wanted us out of the way for new customers. But then again, they didn't ask any other white looking customers if they were done. As soon as we said we were done (third time of being asked and we were tired of the rush so we gave up), two servers immediately came to take away the dish. One of them came in between me and my mother and took the biggest plate with juice still flowing around. Of course some of the juice dropped onto my mother's trousers. That server left without an apology and no one came to tend to us to help clean up until we insisted. The store manager then gave my mother some kind of powder without an apology either. When I complained, the store manager insisted that "it was no one's fault" and "it happens", and that "the server didn't get to apologize because he had to change his shirt because of the juice too", so it was normal for customers to sit in their seats appalled by the service with dirty pants while the server left with no apology to take care of themself first. The arrogance and contempt is apparent. If you'd like to pay a handsome amount and still be treated poorly, I'd recommend this restaurant. read more

This place was recommended to us by our tour guide, and the feel from the folks working there it's all about turning and burning tourists through for very expensive, and fatty, steaks. The food was average at best. Waiter tries hard sell for most expensive steaks and more. A much better place we found off the beaten path is L Arti Di Dory. This is in a local hood within walking distance to the Duomo. Handmade pasta was delicious. Steak is lean, tender and tasty. Tiramisu was out of this world. Don't waste your time at tourist traps. Walk 15 minutes to this gem (L Arti Di Dory). They don't speak much English but you will manage. read more

Best steak so far! This is located near the Duomo in Firenze. We made a reservation prior to coming here because I know they get busy. Their menu is fairly big. They offer pasta, seafood and of course their specialty, steaks. They also offer specials that includes appetizers, main course, dessert and drinks. It's truffle season in Italy and it happened to be on their specials... so when in Italy, you got to have truffles on everything. For starters, we had the crostini with porcini and black truffle shavings, main course we had the rib eye (16 oz) and salad, dessert we had pistachio panna cotta with truffle shavings. Our food came with bottled water and house wine. What can I say... the appetizer was delicious, seasoned right and the truffle shavings wasn't over powering. The steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly, the dessert was awesome! They're so generous with the truffle shavings it got me so excited! The house wine was good, they're also generous with the amount of wine they gave us. They practically gave us a a whole bottle of wine! The cost wasn't so bad either. If this was in San Francisco, our meal would've cost us a whole lot of money. But not in Firenze! Our check only cost us €142 for 3 people... read more

In case you don't read everything: great service, and amazing, MUST HAVE, Onion Soup. Right off the train station. I would like to say that I do not leave reviews for just anyone. Had I had social media earlier in my life, between traveling and living with my father who was in the Navy, there would be reviews from Canada, all over the USA (from Chicago to New York to D.C. to Florida to Colorado and Wyoming), Mexico and other parts of South America, and Europe. I have to give thanks to two people in this review. My waitress and the cook. Service in Italy is very different than in the Americas. In Italy you are able to socialize more without constantly be cared for. If this is a problem for you then you have no business bringing a spouse to Italy at all. You can always get someone's attention easily though. The communication between the staff was as beautiful as listening to the violin while walking over a hill to see the Colosseum appear in front of you (Yes the Colosseum is in Rome not Florence). But it was amazing and applause worthy. The attention that my wife and I received from our waitress Mariana (Spelling?) was as if we were the only two in the restaurant. I noticed that she constantly had her eye on our table as she was back and forth throughout the night. She made sure that my wife's steak was perfect, and learned about my taste in beer (The house wine is good too). Being a server in other countries isn't as easy for someone because of communication, but she did well. She maintained a perfect balance between checking on us and making sure that everything came out right on time. She is by far the best server that I have had in Italy, and possibly worldwide. Next, the Cook. On our way to Florence we were told that we needed to stop any were that had a T-bone steak. This is how we decided on eating here last night. It was half the price of some near by restaurants, that aren't nearly a as nice as this one. I was not disappointed in the steak (For the Italians that haven't been outside of the country I could see how this would be great). There probably isn't an Italian in the world that would tell you that you had to go outside of Italy for pasta. So with that being said if you're from Italy and want the best steak in the world it is at Smith and Wollensky. What really made me want to leave a review though was the onion soup. It did not live up to the hype. I'm a meat enthusiast and as such I thoroughly researched where to get the best bisecca alla fiorentina when visiting Florence. This seemed to be the place, so I booked online a month in advance. The Fork was offering 10-20% discount for booking in advance. Fast forward to the day of reservation. We sat down and server asked if we had booked it online with discount. His attitude completely changed when we said we did. The waiter acted as if he was doing us a favor throughout the rest of the night. All in all, food quality was good. We got the bistecca alla fiorentina of Chianina. It was great but not outstanding. My 15 year old son made it a point to order Quattro Formaggi pizza throughout our stay in Italy. In 3 cities, I'd guesstimate he had at least 10 of them overall. It just so happens that Il Portale was the first. And he deemed it so good (the best, in fact) that on our day trip from Rome to Pisa, we booked the return train so that we made a two hour stop in Florence and ate here a second time. They have a full "senza glutine" menu and I have to say, I agree with the boy. Hands down the best gluten free pizza (with prosciutto and mushrooms) on our first visit. However it's worth noting the second time around, we were the first customers in for dinner and maybe the oven wasn't fully heated, maybe our meal was rushed...I'm not sure. But the crust was not fully cooked and the end result was a bit slimy in the middle. Regardless, tasty ingredients and a very hungry girl meant it was still quite good. I'd heard that any "decent" restaurant in Italy isn't open for dinner before 7pm so a word of caution if you do find yourself eating out before then....we apparently had a shift change towards the end of our meal (as evidenced by the change from white shirts to black shirts by the waitstaff.) One minute, our waiter was dropping off dessert menus and the next, he apparently left the building and so we sat for 30 minutes drooling at the thought of dessert only to have to flag someone else down, get our check and leave without in order to catch our train. This restaurant is conveniently located behind the train station so it makes for the perfect 1st place, last place, and as i mentioned, detour stop for lunch or dinner. read more

We came here today with high hopes, which quickly went downhill within the first 10 minutes. We should have left then, but decided to stick it out for a few more minutes. We had a reservation and were seated right when we arrived. Once we were seated, it took over 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged. The restaurant isn't that big and there were a bunch of waiters and waitresses there, but no one stopped to take a drink order or anything until almost 20 minutes in. When I ordered our meals, the waitress was looking everywhere else, but at me. She didn't even ask my husband if he wanted anything before putting her pad of paper away and looked annoyed when she had to take it out again to write his order down. The food came quickly, which was a plus since the kids were starving. They really enjoyed the steak , but to me it lacked some flavor. It needed more salt and a crust. The potatoes were the best part! I had ordered a salad on the side, which never arrived. I also had booked directly through the website, which stated I'd get a 20% discount, but nothing like that was shown on my receipt. To be honest, I didn't ask because we just wanted to get the heck out of there. Do yourself a favor and find another place for steak.
