Firstly, the service, these guys run a tight ship with clear communication and timely delivery of each course! I have to say that's the first thing noticed. We opted for the 3 course menu which delivers all the main classic Roman dishes and we were not disappointed, my partner is an Italian native and was also highly impressed by most of the dishes. The carbonara and Amatriciana were amazing! We had no reservations and just walked up around 7 and lucked out with a table right away. Trattoria Vecchia Roma is came highly recommended so we decided to give it a try. The smell of garlic outside the restaurant was incredible so we were very starving and ready to eat. The restaurant is really busy and feels a bit chaotic. We were sat in a very high traffic area so it was kind of tough to relax. The menu was extensive and the prices were very fair considering it is a touristy restaurant. They don't ask you if you want bread, and then they throw it on your table in a paper bag and charge you for it. My husband liked his chicken parm and my sister in law loved her ravioli, but everyone else thought their dishes were underwhelming. Nothing was memorable. Trattoria Vecchia Roma is wildly popular, gets a lot of attention, so we gave it a try. The restaurant was busy and lively, but it felt more touristy than expected. The overall feel was rushed, and by the end of the meal it felt more like something you'd find in Little Italy in NYC than a memorable Roman dining experience. There were some positives. The fried artichokes were tasty, and the polpette al sugo were decent meatballs in sauce. Prices here are also great -- wine and pasta are very affordable. The pastas themselves were ok, but nothing stood out. They leaned a bit salty and felt more generic than expected. We also tried both the traditional tiramisu and pistachio tiramisu -- again, ok, but nothing special. One thing to be aware of: bread was brought to the table without us asking (three slices), and it showed up on the bill for €2. Also, if you're coming for the amatriciana, it's supposedly to be finished tableside, but that doesn't always happen -- apparently it's only done in certain parts of the restaurant, which was disappointing. Made a reservation about a month before because I knew about the wait time for walk ins. When we got there we were seated fairly quickly and there was definitely a long line for the walk ins but it seemed to move relatively fast. Their restaurant has a lot of seating. Can be shared But if you've got a big appetite could demolish it on your own. For the set menu I went with- Bruschetta- best tasting tomatoes Bucatini Amatriciana "Flambè"- salty but very flavorful dish. Located near Termini in Roma, Trattoria Vecchia Roma is a pretty good restaurant. There is a constant line outside for walk ups, which we were in. We did wait about 30 minutes before they seated us for this reason but they do take reservations and those people were seated fairly rapidly. My wife specifically ordered the Amatriciana Flambe pasta that was to be prepared tableside in a bowl. This never happened and when we asked our waiter why, he said that is only done in the front part of the restaurant - HUH? This was never mentioned when she ordered it. In fact, when ordering, we asked the waiter if that was their famous tableside dish and he said yes. One would assume he'd tell us that we wouldn't get the tableside preparation at that point due to our seating area. BAD WAITER! Aside from that, the meal was pretty good. At our table we had a mushroom pizza, Cacio e Pepe, green salad, and the Agnello Panato (breaded lamb). I tried each dish and gave my approval. The lamb was a impromptu choice for me as I wanted to try something other than pasta. It was probably my favorite dish of the meal. Along with some vino blanco, our meal was complete. If you're in Rome, you have to visit Trattoria Vecchia Roma. There's usually a long waiting line, but it's absolutely worth it! Out of all the places we tried during our stay, this was by far the most delicious. We loved it so much that we went back three nights in a row. Our waiter, Aldair, was incredibly kind and respectful--his hospitality made the experience even more special and is a big reason we kept coming back. The cheesecake was amazing! We got the polpette di angus con maionese al tartufo (meatballs), Bucatini All 'Amatriciana Flambe, Spaghetti Aglio Olio E Peperoncino, and Ravioli. The ravioli was my favorite. It was so flavorful and definitely would recommend to order. I thought the spaghetti was really salty and the noodles were undercooked. I don't know why this spaghetti is so popular. And to build credibility, I lived in Italy for several months and tried MANY many different spots for these pastas. But this place tops them all, which is a strong statement!!! Apparently this is one of the best places to eat for travelers and to be frank it was the first time I saw a half liter of wine for 6 euro so I was pretty happy already as a foreigner. The place was old school brick oven style with lots of families and locals and tourists alike. We got the roman classics, from cacio e Pepe, carbonara and the steak. We originally wanted the bone marrow but the waitress insisted we got the steak which was actually one of the worst steaks we've had in general. Why did she recommend it to us? Maybe because we're foreigners? I don't know. It definitely didn't hit the spot and potatoes she said was amazing I thought they were mediocre. Honestly just stick to pasta and pizza here. This just left a sour taste in my mouth because we originally wanted something that we wanted but was promised a legendary steak that was less than mid. This is why I'm bumping down the rating from 5 to 4. They also forgot our bruschetta. Not that we had room in our stomach but yes they forgot the bruschetta. For the pastas- the cacio e Pepe was my favorite as it's a lighter taste than the heavy carbonara but if you're a big pork fan the carbonara may be your pick. I ended up eating most of the cacio e Pepe while my friends ate the carbonara. Pastas were excellent. If I ever come back I will be ordering a pizza for sure. My family recently spent 12 days in Italy. As a Yelper, that meant 29 Yelp reviews to do. I decided to save the best for last! Since it's Italy, there were close seconds but for me Trattoria Vecchia Roma was the best! We made 8:30pm reservations and still found quite a crowd at the door. The host was working hard and got us in pretty quickly. You descend into a cavernous restaurant with a fun vibe. I got the feeling that everyone was enjoying their food and time together. I want to highlight the porchetta. When people ask what the best food I had in Italy was, this porchetta comes to mind. It's on the menu as a starter. I absolutely loved it! The skin is unbelievably crispy, the meat is juicy, and the spice blend that it's rolled around was intensely flavorful! I miss that porchetta. Fried cod was a hit, kids pizza a hit, mozzarella in carozza a hit. Wife's osso bucco, ridiculously good. House made red wine was a hit with my wife. I absolutely loved the bucatini alla'matriciana! I had wanted to have that dish, so that I could have the real guanciale. Perfectly al dente and amazing sauce! I loved the coda alla vaccinara (oxtails) also. The collagen from the bones, made for a sauce that was unctuous in the best possible way! I can't neglect to mention two of the best dishes. Hands down the best pasta I have ever had in my life. We both got the pasta that they put in the Parmesan wheel and mix it up with the melted cheese. I didn't catch the name of it. But they let me watch as he made it in the cheese wheel which was so fun to see and I appreciate they let me walk from my table to the stand as it was prepared. The place is so busy and you as an individual customer still matter which is rare these days and I can see why it's such a popular place and not only for the amazing food but for the way they treat you. My family of 3 had dinner here last night. Good thing we had a reservation (for 7pm when the restaurant opens), as when we got there right at 7, we saw a line stretching a block. The line was for those that did not have reservations. There was a "smaller" line of ~30 people for those with reservations. When the restaurant started seating people, they took a bunch of people from the non-reservation line first, which I thought was a bit weird. Since we ended up getting seated, I assume so did everyone else who had a reservation did as well. The restaurant is at basement level and "old school" decor. They squeeze people in. Our party of 3 got seated at a table meant for 2 with an extra seat placed on the side. Two of us were staring directly at the back storage area/rundown back staircase. When I was walking out after our meal, saw a bunch of empty tables that were better located so can't explain why we got stuck in the corner. Will give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt... The service was so-so. Part of this is attributable to how busy they are, but frankly, we saw some servers just walking back and forth aimlessly. A zoo environment, certainly not the model of efficiency I think one of the reasons this restaurant is so popular are the prices. Everything seemed to be 10-20% less than the same dishes at other restaurants. One annoyance was that when we were seated, there was already a paper bag in the table with some okay, room temperature bread. When we got the bill, there is a 2 euro charge for the bread. I just chalked it up to the cost of eating here but a bit strange IMO. We had: Prosciutto with melon - 4/5: the melon was delicious (so sweet). The prosciutto was a bit salty even by prosciutt standards.. Fried calamari and prawns - 5/5: perfectly fried and the squid and prawns were both very flavorful. In the U.S., this would have been served with a side of marinara sauce (which would have been great) but assume that's not the norm here. Spaghetti Corsara (seafood) - 5/5: really tasty. Fresh tomato sauce, perfectly cooked seafood and pasta. Portion is pretty big as well compared to pastas at other restaurants. Diavola Pizza - 4/5: Sauce, cheese and salami easily 5/5. The crust was a bit thicker than others we've had and a bit doughy. My daughter and I really enjoyed the food so would overlook the negatives and go back. Thank goodness our hotel concierge was able to call and make our reservations as we strolled to the front of the line for others who were not so fortunate to have reservations for a Saturday lunch . Crazy noisy, busy, incredible food - one of our best meals in town. Our table was in the middle of 2 other two tops and we enjoyed chatting with the other diners. Fortunately, their English was much better than my Italian. Bread was served hot in a paper bag and it was amazing of course. I ordered the house spaghetti with a red sauce ..look at the top of the menu to find it and my hubby order cacio y pepe. Lots of pizza, pasta, suppli/appetizers at moderate prices and generous portions. The steamed/braised artichoke was delicious and so tender. Our server was helpful although we had to track someone down to pay the bill towards the end of lunch service hours. See photo I was kind of expecting with fresh tomatoes so it was disappointing to me. The taste was ok to me. The pizza was yummy but not Roman style where it is paper thin. I had oxtail that fell off the bone at another place so it was full of Cala or but I like it falling off the bone. The best was the carbonara pasta and amaritciana pastas. Wonderful showstopper hidden away in Rome. We had to wait a good 20 minutes outside before being ushered in downstairs into the basement-level joint. We ordered BOTH of the flambe pastas they're famous for - the bucatini amatriciana and the spaghetti parmesan. Our pastas were tossed inside the heated insides of pecorino (mine) and the parmesan cheese wheels LIVE which coated them with wonderful cheesiness (oh, and the aroma that wafts through the restaurant when the lady did that... Ooh la la Buono, magnifico!). My pasta all'amatriciana had tasty bits of guanciale (cured pork) and perfectly al dente bucatini in spicy peppery sauce similar to arrabbiata. Of course everything was coated it nutty aged pecorino cheese strands from the flambeing. My wife's spaghetti parmesan was less salty due to lack of cured meat nor spice, but more sweet & umami. Very enjoyable. We did realize that our mistake is ordering two cheesy pastas for lunch... because even with a glass of san pell & pinot Grigio, that was power overwhelming and bit too heavy for lunch. I guess eager tourist's mistake. We did have a caprese salad but we all know that... isn't really salad (shhhh) at least how we in the states think of salad (a lot of greens), so overall a heavy experience. There were quite a few tables enjoying pizza as well as white pastas like Alfredos, and overall everyone was beaming with that certain 'Yep, we knew where to come. Aren't we so cool?' vibe that we gladly reflected back. This place is a true trattoria that the locals go to. I strolled in on a Thursday afternoon at around 1:30 pm, and it seemed like I was the only foreigner in the entire place! There wasn't much of a wait but that might have been because the restaurant had just re-opened after their monthlong august break. I got seated and ordered a 1/2 lt house red, a prosciutto pizza. Who would've guessed that 1/2lt of house red, 4€, is somehow cheaper than a class of wine, 5€? What a great cost to effect ratio! The pizza arrived out promptly, was pretty standard thin crust Italian pizza but the crust was not dry at all and I quickly gobbled it down while downing the wine. The best part of the meal came after though, I ordered a tiramisu and as soon as I had my first bite I "'mmmm"'ed so loudly that the worker nearby turned around and asked me if I thought it was good I definitely thought it was the most memorable tiramisu of my trip! read more

The food was incredible, I'm a foodie and particular about flavor pairings. We got the rosemary slices beef cooked med rare to perfection. It's tender and tasty, the sear was perfect. Paired this with sautéed broccoli and the ravioli in brown butter sage with mushrooms. The broccoli was tender and loaded with buttery garlic flavor. The ravioli was cooked al-dente, good amount of cheese, covered with the buttery sauce and slices mushrooms, bellissimo! I rarely write reviews, but I wanted to write this one to ward off other tourists visiting Rome. This restaurant is a large tourist attraction with many high reviews. For starters, I will say the food isn't bad, but it also isn't good. It is average at best. The service is about what you would expect here, the servers don't seem to care much about what you think and are just going through the motions of their job. I don't want to generalize that to all Italian restaurants here, because there were restaurants where the servers were very attentive and often asked how the food was. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and would advise those who follow yelp reviews to read carefully. Some places are tourists traps, others (such as this) are overhyped. A few months back I was shopping in an athletic apparel store nearby and the owner, out of nowhere, told me that Vecchia Roma has the best Bucatini all'Amatriciana around and I should try it. An odd recommendation, to be sure, as I was only looking for a sweatshirt and some joggers. I eventually made my way there and I quickly realized that the man knows of what he speaks. We went there and had some traditional roman dishes, Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe and Bucatini all'Amatriciana, and both were amazing. It was so good we decided to come back a week later and have something a little less well known, this time bringing my camera. We made reservations and we were glad we did. The line of those people without a reservation was probably 100 people deep. We sat down on time and got a 1/2 liter of vino della casa and settled in for a great meal. For my antipasto, I had the Supplì di Pasta. Although this is a simple dish, the frying skills are a big indicator of the quality of the restaurant for us. It was fried perfectly crunchy and not greasy at all. I also tried the Fettuccine al ragù bianco di Cinghiale and enjoyed it, although I don't think my picture does it justice. I was expecting a gamier flavor but this was delicate and the pasta was nicely chewy. My wife enjoyed Polpette di Melanzane (eggplant meatballs), which were also fried perfectly, and Arrosticini for her main dish. Luckily I was able to steal a skewer of the lamb and found it very flavorful, with the right amount of salt and that delicious grilled flavor. At only 10€, this greatly exceeded my expectations. Even though the restaurant was packed, with a line out the door, the service was on point. They managed the crowds with a very well defined process of seating, ordering, serving and checking in with you. This probably limits the flexibility for the customer, but I'm not viewing this as a negative because I respect the level of organization and coordination in a city not known for it.
