The service was good, the desserts were interesting and delicious; there were a lot of choices; the dessert menu goes on for pages! We recommend going for a great lunch or dinner just around the corner to Enoteca Cul de Sac for a less expensive alternative (see my review); then come here for dessert! At Tre Scalini you will find great people watching. While the prices are not for the faint of heart, you are, after all, paying for the location. I am surprised by any negative reviews of this restaurant. We popped in for drinks and appetizers and it was very very good. The food was good, the wine was good, and the service was exceptional. The square that this bakery is located in is magical. There is just such a tantalizing aura of this square that just screams Rome. After waking around and checking out all of the wonderful artists selling copies of work on the square and getting my tarot cards read by a beautifully aged gypsy, I was craving some gelato. My tour guide pointed us in the direction of this shop, and so off we went. There is a massive selection of gelato to choose from. The workers are all very kind, and the shop is perfectly clean. I ordered my all time favorite, cantaloupe sorbetto. I'm obsessed with cantaloupe, so this is the flavor I tried everywhere I went during my travels! This consistency allowed me to truly taste all of the different qualities of Italian gelato. So, I think that I'm a pretty qualified gelato judge. This cup in particular was outstanding! The gelato was light and fluffy, all while keeping a very consistent and fresh flavor. It almost had the consistency of a marshmallow, it was that light! The little chunks of cantaloupe only added to the delicate sweetness and was the cherry on top. This was my 2nd favorite gelato in Rome, right on the tail end of Grom. When I return to Rome, I know for a fact that I'll be hitting Tre Scalini up again! read more

Right in the heart of the Piazza Navona is this cute cafe, Tre Scalini. We enjoyed some breakfast here before heading out to the Vatican for a tour. You sit outside on their patio right in front of the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and listen to beautiful Italian music. Fantastic! read more

37 times in Italy. 12 times in Rome So one can say that I am a fan. We can also say that I know Italian food and their ingredients. And for the very first time I have lived the most unpleasant experience with a waiter. As I know Rome very well . I chose to eat the spaghetti carbonara in this restaurant because I had a very positive experience with it before. Unfortunately this time it was very disappointing.The dish was simply inedible. It had a soap aftertaste that was covered by an overuse of salt. I try to explain this discreetly to the waiter and order another dish. The waiter explains to me that pecorino cheese tastes saltier....as if I've never eaten pecorino before. Adds to that that other customers have not complained... When the food is fresh as it should be in a good restaurant I think every dish has its own taste. The waiter judges without having tasted my dish without knowing that I know Italian cuisine by heart. But it doesn't stop here... He brings me the new dish and completely ignores us after that moment. He doesn't look back when I try to order drinks. He doesn't look back when I try to ask for an ashtray. It's only when I get up to leave the place that he's next to us in a jiffy. Without looking at the amount I notice that there is still carbonara on the ticket instead of lasagna. I tell him that and there he begins to speak in an outrageously loud manner. Here refuses to listen to what I say and drowns me out. This is an unacceptable attitude towards a customer who has remained discreet and politely ordered a different dish than the one she originally intended to eat. The photos show the restaurant team. The waiter I'm talking about isn't there. The rude waiter I'm talking about wears glasses and has no place in the hospitality industry. If a customer is not satisfied with a dish, he should politely replace it and apologize for the inconvenience and unfortunate fact. In a good restaurant you expect not only high prices for the dishes, but tasteful pasta and a tasteful attitude from the waiters. read more

Tartufo is the one thing I must mention about my experience here! It is one of the most amazing desserts that I have ever had. You must try it and enjoy every bite! He loudly called across the restaurant in Italian that I didn't think their service there was good, though I understood exactly what he was saying. We were seated quickly and offered a blanket to keep us warm as we opted to sit outside to 'people watch'. Food & drinks served promptly. Drinks were served piping hot and a nice strong flavour. Truffle ice cream was dark chocolate ice cream mixed with dark choc pieces and topped with cream & a wafer. Very rich and a strong flavour so probably enough to share between two people. Only downside was having to watch waiters try to 'capture' potential diners which meant we had to catch their attention when we wanted to pay. Otherwise a nice place to watch the square from. Located right in the Piazza Navona, we visited Tre Scalini twice during our visit to Rome. The first time, we wanted a lemon granita to go but we were told that it was only served if we sat down. We were exhausted and almost heat stroked so we decided to sit outside to enjoy an expensive lemon granita (€6 per granita!). It was really refreshing and lemony and definitely helped cool us down in the crazy Roman heatwave. The second time we were there, we got a lemon gelato to go (which was at the corner, rather than the main restaurant). The gelato was once again refreshing, and cost €3 per small (piccolo) cup. Recommend the to-go part of Tre Scalini. The sit-down was not quite worth it. read more

Yes, this is the birthplace of tartufo. It was created by Ciampini family in 1946, using 13 varieties of swiss chocolate. It was a little underwhelming experience as we read/heard so much about it and being chocolate lovers we didn't find it special. The location is amazing as it's located right on Piazza Novona. Tip - Toilets and wi-fi are only reserved for dine-in customers. So if you're only there for their famous tartufo make sure to bring a cup to pee in, should you need to. read more

How the heck anyone can complain about the prices is beyond me. Yes, they were about 1-2 euros more than restaurants off the square. However, the servers were amazing and the food was OMG delicious. My mother-in-law thinks Italians don't know how to make pizza or how to cook pasta until it's "done." Aside from the American prejudice about wanting Italian food to taste the way the Americanized versions taste at home, we just need to chill and to try to appreciate authentic cuisine. The food here is superb - at least the 6 or 7 different dishes our party had were. In my case, the pasta special with fresh porcini mushrooms, black truffle and olive oil was marvelous. The Oso Buco, unlike anything I've had in the states, was equally delicious. The Tartufo dessert amazed, and the espresso and limoncello were the perfect ending to a great meal. Of the hundreds of meals we have had in restaurants on cruise ships and abroad, my wife said this was the best overall meal experience she's ever had while traveling. I agree. read more

The street solicitor for them coaxed us to sit down and we thought "why not it's right on the Piazza and we can people watch while eating". We also saw a picture of the famous Italian dessert tartufo offered there and it looked chocolate delicious. I had risotto gamberi with shrimp for 22 euros and got just 3 medium shrimp on a large serving of bland tasting risotto. My husband ordered gluten free spaghetti alle polpettte for 22 euros (he was told by the waiter that they had gluten free spaghetti); he got penne and when he asked the waiter for correction of spaghetti as ordered was told "We don't have gluten free spaghetti in Italy"!! Our bill came for 96 euros and as the waiter was running our credit card he asked if we wanted to leave a tip in cash or as a separate charge on our card. My husband didn't answer him; he wrote TIPS on the bottom of our bill and circled it! We ignored him and left. What gaul. In Italy the waiters/waitresses get a living wage and normally do not expect a tip nor are the customers required to tip. There isn't even a spot on the credit card receipt for tips. I guess this restaurant, at least the waiters we had, are trying to take advantage of U.S. customers. To be fair the tartufo we had for dessert was out of this world delicious and the location on the Piazza is nice. read more

Highly recommended by friends, we were completely satisfied with this Plazza Navona outdoor cafe. We started with a fried artichoke dish my wife wanted. Didn't sound too exciting to me, be I went along. It was great, only lightly breaded and very tasty. Then I had an absolutely delicious risotto with scallops, tomato, and asparagus. Accompanied of course with an Italian white, this one a nice Trebbiano. We had to have dessert - the extreme chocolate tartufo that this restaurant claims to have invented. Rich creamy chocolate on the inside, with shaved chocolate on the outside, topped with a giant serving of whipped cream. With a thin cookie on top and a cherry at the bottom in the middle of the chocolate. Good service, cold mist sprayers working under the giant umbrellas, and the wonderful view of the Plazza Navona. Upon returning in 2007 we were not impressed, service, food, it was the quintessential tourist trap. We came back in 2012, but just got gelato. That was good. Ordered fish Dover sole (it's a local river white fish grilled and served on its on no starch potatoes or rice) also comes with bones in - whole fish ( they clean it for you before serving if you like) $18 and we ordered a mixed salad $8 and speggetti arribiatta with pollo (chicken) they didn't have it on menu but they accommodated and made it for us. Not great food options or menu for kids - but you can ask them to make half portions for kids pasta. Deserts are so so not very impressive. This is only for the tartufo. We went There and there were a lot of people eating lunch etc. They Have a different price for eating at the table so we took ours and sat in the piazza. Fahmi, the man behind the counter, described it as- chocolate ice cream with chocolate hollandaise and bits of black chocolate. The whole thing is chocolate on steroids and is all kinds of delicious. It's what the store is best known for as well and I would definitely recommend a stop here when you are at the navona. I would also say that this is more solid than a gelato or ice cream I actually thought there was a cake base to it but there isn't- it's all solid chocolate. I wish I could give this place negative stars. Undoubtedly the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. In fact, I will call the experience offensive. When we sat we knew we were getting ourselves into a tourist trap; however, we were blissfully unaware of what exactly was in store. The waiter was rude, pestered us when we did not immediately order, and complained that he gave the wifi before we got our food. They even turned off the wifi for the majority of time we sat there. While the little food we ordered, bruschetta with mozzarella, was adequate, the 7 euro coffee was atrocious. When we asked for one to be remade as none of us were able to drink it, the waiter fought with us and complained it was coming out of his pocket. We told the manager our grievances, and he offered to make another. At that point the waiter returned to complain to us more that we went to the manager (in hopes that he would help), leaving us so offended that we asked to leave immediately. This restaurant was recommended by my daughter's high school dean of students (he is Italian), and it was indeed well worth visiting. It's right in the square of Piazza Navona so might as well make a stop for this item. Ask to go to the bar which is basically just the gelato stand... in the middle you'll see some brown balls that says tartufo. Ask for one and pick a gelato topping of your choice.
