This spot is located in Piazza Navona in a great location. We had two orders of gelato which came with three scoops of different flavors in each order. We also had two cappuccinos. This is a tough one. We have been coming to Tre Scalini as part of our "night before we leave Rome" tradition for many years. Over those years I have noticed that Tre Scalini isn't quite what it once was back in the days of Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton and on through the years. Heck, it's not even like it was 5 years ago. Going to Tre Scalini used to feel a bit special given its history. Now, they seem to be like any other of a number of places lining Piazza Navona, complete with the acchiappaturisti (you can Google the meaning). That aspect alone kills the feel of Tre Scalini. And they used to not need it so that was a bit of a red flag right from the start. Piazza Navona has always been a place to go and watch people and Tre Scalini was always a great place to do it. Sitting under the umbrella and enjoying a drink and a tartufo had always been the way we wanted to remember Rome. Not so much any longer... We didn't experience any of the service issues other have mentioned. Our order was taken quickly and our items brought in a timely manner. We had our tartufo, which wasn't what it had been just a few years ago, and not even in the same ballpark as the photo on their website. The tartufo is now a flat, square chunck of gelato frozen so solid that we had to chip away at it for a while as it thawed before we could start to eat it. And we never did find a cherry in ours. More importantly, it wasn't like it had been on our previous 10+ visits. On those visits the tartufo was much more in line with their photo. Maybe we caught them on an off night this time, but seeing other reviews makes me think things are slipping a bit. I sincerely hope that things get turned around. read more

Only had dessert here - gelato & tartufo. The tartufo is like a chocolate ice cream bomb, impressive to look and a bit tough to eat politely. Gelato was good. Wonderful ambience. And the food! We had a recommendation to come here from one of the locals, saying it had some of the best pasta in this section of Rome. We were not disappointed. Listen to the negative reviews. We just came from there and staff was rude. I think one of them said some rude stuff about us in Italian because when we asked for hot sauce he brought us 3 different bottles of olive oil and seemed mad about it LOL (they don't speak English here). When we were paying the check, the server actually tried to pressure us for a tip! He kept saying "no tip no tip?". And this was after he had already marked down a tip for himself!! I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews but feel like I need to do this to prevent others from making the same mistake I did. Tre Scalini is located in Piazza Navona, where there is high tourist foot traffic. They have awful, unfriendly staff and service and do not speak English and will not try to figure out how to respectfully communicate with you. They treat you as is you're inconveniencing them by asking to dine in their restaurant. We got an affogato and it was just OK at best. We do not recommend this establishment to non-italian speaking tourists. It was our first day in Rome and were exploring the Navona area and thought it would be nice to stop in for a quick affogato. We had already been traveling Europe for about 2 weeks at this point and never experienced any issues ordering affogatos or asking to dine in anywhere else. We attempted to order at the gelato counter but were redirected to the cashier to order. We walked up to the cashier and asked for 2 affogatos. 2 hostesses then gave us the invoice - 11 euros for 2 affogatos. Great. We then asked if we could sit down at their patio. They both let out an exasperated sigh and rolled their eyes. A couple minutes went by (in complete silence) before they printed out a second invoice - this time it said it was 30 euros for 2 affogatos. We were confused. Mind you, there are no prices displayed anywhere within the restaurant and we were not given a menu. It feels like as a tourist it'd be natural to wonder why 2 affogatos would cost 30 euro, no? So we asked. The hostess then passive aggressively grabbed and opened a menu and snapped at us to point out that the cost of an affogato being 15 euro. At this point it finally occurred to us that they were the type of restaurant that essentially charged a "cover charge" to dine-in at their restaurant. Take away prices were different from dine-in prices. We knew this was a "thing" in Europe but there was no signage or anything indicating this would be the case at this particular establishment so we were very surprised by the way the staff handled the situation. You'd think that a restaurant in a tourist location would be more forgiving to tourists. We had an awful experience and do not recommend this place to other tourists. read more

I have no idea why the bad reviews but we had a great experience! The hostess ushered us in promising gluten free items and they sure delivered! It was hands down the BEST gluten free pizza either of us have ever had! We selected mushroom, ham and fresh mozzarella. If you're visiting the Pantheon, there's a good chance you'll end up in the Piazza Navona. There are bunch of restaurants outlining the perimeter of the Piazza. We ate at this one because we had to wait two hours for our tour bus and were tired from walking all morning at the Colosseum and the Pantheon. We had a nice table in the front of the outdoor dining area facing the Piazza. That was the only good part. Grilled Octopus tough. Two small tentacles 24€ Caprese Salad. 14€. Eight cherry tomatoes (marble size) cut in half. One little sprig of basil with three half inch leaves. Three small balls of fresh mozzarella. I don't know what to say. Anybody whose been to an Italian restaurant anywhere in the world knows this doesn't resemble a Caprese Salad. Service horrible. Pro tip: if there is a guy standing outside the restaurant trying to wave you in, you're in an overpriced tourist trap with poor quality food. Second pro tip: if there are pictures of the dishes on the menu, you're in an overpriced tourist trap with poor quality food . Italians don't need a picture to know what their food looks like. This is postcard perfect location for dinner. At square of Navona, the sun is setting, street performers do their best to attract. This restaurant just in the mixed of the good setting. Basically you can have a seat at the outdoor and look towards the square. In the mean time listen and watch the street performer while eating. Love the romantic dinner. We have the the sauté di vongole (baby clam) to start. The sauté sauce was excellent. Clam is tasty. Our main courses are the Veal Scaloppina with wine sauce and mushroom. The veal is great. Soft and easy to bite. Our other entrees is salmon pasta. This salmon was process with salt before. May be was the salty fish. This is my first time with salty salmon in pasta. Great dish to be. Our service is average. It is a bit slow. We are at the square and may be we should be slow down with the romantic setting. read more

They are known for their Tartufo dessert which they hand crush in front of you and put whipped cream on--I'm definitely trying that next time! Great place for dining, drinks or dessert! This restaurant covers a large portion of the northwest side of Piazza Navona so it's a great place to dine in the afternoon to avoid the direct sun outdoors. I really enjoyed the lunch after some servers escorted us to our tables from the Piazza. Normally one might think to run the other way, but we saw lots of other people dining there and the food looked good. It is on the expensive side, but we liked the food, drinks, service and ambiance. It was funny because we saw a friend having an aperol spritz there later in the day and stopped there again. The view of the Piazza Navona is perfect too. read more

This cafe gave me the craziest service experience of my life. The waiter was nuts. I saw that there was an item - cafe noisette (hazelnut) - under the iced coffee section. I asked the waiter whether it was possible to make it hot. He said yes. I was a bit surprised that it hadn't been listed under the hot coffee section, but trusted the waiter and was looking forward warming up on a chilly day. The backup waiter (not sure of the proper title) showed up with what looked like an ice cream sundae. It was in a glass cone topped with whipped cream and with a wafer stuck in it. The woman at the table behind me also thought it was ice cream. She asked "is that ice cream" and "how much is it" - she said it looked good. It was the exact opposite of what I expected. I expected a cup of warm liquid - not a cone of cold cream. When I expressed confusion, the backup waiter called over the waiter who would turn out to be crazy. The waiter kept arguing with me about cafe noisette - and insisted that I google it. He also asked me how they would have to make it such that it would be edible for me. So I googled it and the first photo that popped up was a cup of liquid with a bit of cream on top (a bit like a cappuccino). I showed it to him and said that if they could make it like that, I would drink it. He said no, they make it like the ice cream sundae that I described earlier. I said I can't eat that (I hate whipped cream and didn't want anything cold). I asked - again - if I could simply exchange it for something else. He said no, I would still have to pay for this ice cream sundae. We went back and forth and he was getting ruder and ruder, so I got up to go. This is when he went nuts. He told me to stay put because he was going to "call the police." I stood by their big ad banner out front - he turned around to make sure I didn't run away. He headed towards a crowd of people but quickly turned back (I didn't see any police). He then accosted a woman who appeared to be the manager - pointing at me and speaking rapidly and angrily. She pushed his arm down and ignored him. Having lost the argument, he came over and took away the sundae. He then went to the woman who had asked about the ice cream to complain about me - cursing me that "bad things will happen to you in your life!" read more

My parents and I were looking for a cafe that serves pistachio nice cream. We found this place a have a few comments: 1) We ordered Americano and pistachio ice cream. A must stop in Piazza Navona, we discovered first in 2016 during a rainstorm. They provided a blanket to dry us off while we drank Prosecco and ate their yummy fruit gelato. Tre Scalini was one of the more disappointing spots I visited in Rome. The location right on Piazza Navona is nice (albeit crowded and touristy), and it makes for some fun people watching while you savor the desserts. But the actual desserts were just so-so. First, I sat on the patio, which is a much more expensive option. The same desserts you can get inside the shop to go are basically doubled in price on the sit-down menu. I ordered a trio of tropical gelati -- kiwi, mango and pineapple. The flavors were fine, tasted similar to sorbet and were not spectacular. The texture was a bit icy and not very satisfying. The presentation is nice, as the gelati are served in a little martini glass with some decorative cookies wedged on top, but I literally cannot believe how much I paid for this. More than ten dollars, folks! I left so unsatisfied that I ended up wandering down the road and ordering at another gelato shop -- Quinto, which would become my absolute favorite gelato in Rome. But I came back again after reading more about Tre Scalini. I figured I had made some rookie mistakes: (a) sitting on the patio instead of ordering at the counter and taking my dessert out to the piazza and (b) not ordering Tre Scalini's most famous dessert. So I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I rolled up to the counter, older and wiser, and paid just six Euros for the decadent chocolate tartufo, which I proudly carted outside with me to enjoy on the piazza. I had heard people complaining that the tartufo is "too rich" and that they "can't finish it," which is usually a good sign that this will be a delicious dessert. The tartufo is good. Much better than the tropical gelati for sure. A beautiful ball of chocolate ice cream coated in a chocolate shell complete with chocolate shavings, whipped cream and a cookie. But, again, it really wasn't that spectacular. Could've been richer! Could've even been more chocolatey. But it's perfectly passable, and it sure is photogenic. So, eh. Anyway, I probably wouldn't go back to Tre Scalini (although I do feel drawn to the banana split...). Serve me mediocre gelato once, shame on you. Serve me mediocre gelato twice, shame on me. After waking up too early on our first day here we ate at the first place we saw that opened. The outdoor seating was lovely. Right in the middle of the piazza and the servers were very friendly. The English breakfast was good. The mozzarella and spinach omelet was ok, a lot of spinach and the cheese hardened quickly. The fruit bowl however was soooo good. So fresh and sweet. read more

Primo seating in Piazza Navona should give you the expectation of a higher bill. The service was good, the desserts were interesting and delicious; there were a lot of choices; the dessert menu goes on for pages! We recommend going for a great lunch or dinner just around the corner to Enoteca Cul de Sac for a less expensive alternative (see my review); then come here for dessert! At Tre Scalini you will find great people watching. While the prices are not for the faint of heart, you are, after all, paying for the location. It's absolutely worth the small splurge to enjoy your surroundings for a short time! read more

I am surprised by any negative reviews of this restaurant. We popped in for drinks and appetizers and it was very very good. The food was good, the wine was good, and the service was exceptional. We did not have to wait to order food or drinks (like as is more usual in Rome) and they were very attentive and friendly. And you can't beat the view of the plaza. read more

The square that this bakery is located in is magical. There is just such a tantalizing aura of this square that just screams Rome. After waking around and checking out all of the wonderful artists selling copies of work on the square and getting my tarot cards read by a beautifully aged gypsy, I was craving some gelato. My tour guide pointed us in the direction of this shop, and so off we went. There is a massive selection of gelato to choose from. The workers are all very kind, and the shop is perfectly clean. I ordered my all time favorite, cantaloupe sorbetto. I'm obsessed with cantaloupe, so this is the flavor I tried everywhere I went during my travels! This consistency allowed me to truly taste all of the different qualities of Italian gelato. So, I think that I'm a pretty qualified gelato judge. This cup in particular was outstanding! The gelato was light and fluffy, all while keeping a very consistent and fresh flavor. It almost had the consistency of a marshmallow, it was that light! The little chunks of cantaloupe only added to the delicate sweetness and was the cherry on top. This was my 2nd favorite gelato in Rome, right on the tail end of Grom. When I return to Rome, I know for a fact that I'll be hitting Tre Scalini up again! read more
