It's been almost 6 years now living in Central Illinois, and I have to give a resounding no in general to this bakery for everyday baked goods. Most of their cookies are terrible, all taste the same and have a slight stale taste to them. This reminds me of "Innkeeper's Coffee/Galesburg", also stale'ish tasting cookies. My specialty dessert cupcakes were unappealing and very small, especially for the price! Their turtle candies were very, very good. Service was good here. I came in on a week day to check out the bakery and get a birthday cake. The building is beautiful and the cases are filled with cookies and cupcakes and so many other items. There was also soup avaliable on the day of my visit. I was looking for bread but the selection the day I came mostly had sweet instead of savory types. I got a plain cake with some decor and it was around $35 dollars for an 8 inch cake which is very pricy and from a quality standpoint it was good but nothing exemplary. This is an establishment that is apart of peoria, as much as it is apart of my life growing up til now, it has lasted the test of time and brings excitement to anyone who hears about its arrival. This bakery is no longer nearby so i cannot buy from the case whenever i want anymore, but i will order this for my birthday, every party, holiday and celebration that i can afford to do so. First impression is that it is a beautiful building, family owned business. Love the old buildings and the vibe inside is very fun - antique bikes, pictures of the building with the original company and water tower. Desserts have great variety. A little pricier but was very excited for our treats since we had heard so much about the various options. Cons: hair in my pie (noticed after I had almost finished eating it =( and I have to say that our entire group had a pretty negative interaction with Brittany (shorter brown hair female-I believe that was her name). Love Trefzigers and will continue to go but the service we had yesterday left a lot to be desired. There were just a couple of other customers and they were already being helped and while I was waiting at the counter for service, the 2 girls behind the counter were just standing and talking to each other. I know they saw me waiting at the counter because I made eye contact with one of them, yet they still continued their conversation for a couple minutes afterward before coming up to me. My daughter had a question about one of the pastries and she asked one of the girls to help her but she acted very bothered by the question and pretty much blew her off. I had asked to have my 2 dozen cookies consolidated in a square box because it was a gift and had this done in the past but this girl was arguing with me that it couldn't be done and wanted to give me the cookies on 2 foam plates. That Simon Trefzger who arrived to the US from Germany in 1856 would be tickled a "strawberry cream pink" to see a customer like myself from Hong Kong in 2017 sitting in his family's bakery store with a smile on her face thoroughly enjoying her baked good treats. I grew up in a small town in Indiana and love small town bakeries. There is something authentic, glutenous and real about these places. If you live in a small town, you know what I am talking about. The Trefzger bakery started in Ohio before ending up in Illinois, but has been around since 1861. Clearly they are doing something right to be in business after all these years! Despite Trefzger's newer larger location to accommodate more room to bake and a bigger show room to serve the public (I never had a chance to visit the smaller original location, although in photos you can tell it was a piece of Peoria history!), this place is soaked into the same feeling as walking into a small mom and pop shop. Brick walls, wood floors, welcoming staff, fresh baked goods put out daily, warm bread/dough smell coming from the back. And the variety and assortment of stuff is extensive. There is something for everyone from cakes, cupcakes and turn overs to cookies, breads and coffee cakes. But be warned, stuff sells out and choices can be more limited later in the day. I was hooked from the first time I ever walked in, bought a pecan sandie thump print and a fresh cherry danish and sat down with a container of milk in their store. I have enjoyed bringing back to my folks in Terre Haute, IN their strawberry chiffon cake of the month this July, their blueberry coffee cake, a few turnovers and some bread. I enjoy going in when I am in Peoria, looking around, grabbing a pastry and a drink to sit down and enjoy right there to ponder what I am going to purchase to take home (there is so much good stuff to pick from, I have to pause to absorb it all!). Grab a number from their machine if they are busy the moment you arrive before you start looking around. Someone the crowd can be extensive, other times, not so much. I often bring home stuff and my folks freeze it. I have found most things freeze pretty well from Trefzgers. I also like that they recycle and have clean, welcoming bathrooms for guests. You can take the girl out of a small midwest town, but you cannot take the small midwest town nor the love of an authentic small town bakery out of the girl! read more

Honestly, I am sad to leave this review but I came all the way down from Houston to visit my sister while she graduated with her degree. We ordered a four layered white cake with tons of fresh fruit all throughout the 4 layers and on top with buttercream filling in the middle. We ordered almost the same cake before but chocolate last time. Now - As far as the cake, it was moist so that was pleasant but the taste wasn't there. It tasted like nothing at all. It didn't taste like their normal cake. Then on top of that the buttercream was terrible. It was like biting into a bag of sugar. Way too sweet and it was even gritty when you put it in your mouth. Overall it was very unpleasant for spending $113.00 for this cake only it to turn out the way it did. Now I can't reach a manager or anyone because they're closed... I will try again on Monday to see what can be done because it wasn't worth $113.00. Customer Service - the employee who took my order was awesome. We found out about this bakery through the food network while on vacation and made it a point to try it since we knew we would be in the area. It looks like an old factory from the outside. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the many employees there. It's huge inside and they have so many good things to buy. They make everything in house. They sell things from pies to pizza pies. The smell is so good it makes you want to stay inside and just take it all in. We decided to try their cake of the month. Raspberry chiffon cake. It was so fluffy with the right amount of sweetness to balance the acidic in the raspberry. My mouth is watering from typing this review. We also bought a raspberry coffee cake just like the chiffon cake it was balanced the right way that you didn't miss any flavors. We can't wait to return and try their many other items on their menu.
