Run, don't walk if you're Polynesian and ready to see your curls live their best life with Caroline! I've always been nervous about getting my curls done and usually just defaulted to straightening, but I'm so glad my partner nudged me to book with her after we found her on social media. I've never seen my curls this defined. Not only did she style my hair beautifully, she took the time to teach me how to care for it myself and even had me snap photos of the products she used. After the appointment, she followed up with videos walking through the steps because, let's be honest, I forgot half of what she told me the second I left I seriously can't recommend her enough. It was also such a fun bonus that she's Tongan like me! She's warm, welcoming, and super open to feedback, which meant a lot since I've had stylists in the past get weird about that. My hair ended up a little bigger than I'm used to, and when I asked if we could tone it down and switch up the part, she was completely receptive. All my life I thought I had straight hair with a natural tendency to frizz. It wasn't until recently that I suspected that I had wavy hair, and a close look in the mirror showed me that I had a loose wave pattern. Although I showed up at my previous hairdresser with my natural texture, she still styled it straight, and so I knew I needed a curl specialist. I found the Lush Curls salon through Yelp. I first scheduled an in-person consultation to (1) confirm if my hair was textured enough for a "curly" cut, and (2) get a feel of how Caroline was as a person. Not only did she confirm that I had wavy hair, more importantly she was super sweet and nice! I was so excited to get to my haircut, which we scheduled a week after. My haircut appointment felt more like a spa retreat than a regular cut/wash/style. For one, the salon is in a quiet corner of the building, and I was the only client there which my introvert self really appreciated. The haircut came first, a dry cut where Caroline worked with the layers I already had, as I was growing out a year old shag cut. We had already talked about the hair length and cut during the consult, so this went really quickly. Next came my favorite part, where I got a shampoo and detox/deep conditioning hair mask. During the shampoo, Caroline really got her hands in there and gave me a scalp massage so relaxing the rest of me melted into a mass of happy jelly. I'm pretty sure my mind went back to joyful childhood memories, it was that good. But she wasn't done with me! Next came a detox and deep conditioning hair mask, WITH STEAM. That magical steam soaked my hair but also gently flowed to my face and I was all about this free facial! Yay! (Note: Caroline also offers the scalp treatment (with the life changing massage) separately. I'm planning to do that in between haircuts.) After Caroline woke me up from that blissful experience, it was time for the styling. She showed me what products she will be using (I took pictures), how to use them and in what order. She gave me a mirror so I can watch her apply hair foam section by section behind my head, and also to see how she diffused my hair dry. She had me lean forward later on as part of the diffuse dry process. By the time she was done, I WAS SHOOK. The good kind of shook. I didn't really have expectations on what my hair would do, maybe a loose wave here and there. There were waves everywhere!!! What shocked me the most was that I had ringlets in there too! Such a happy surprise. Caroline's magic handz brought forth what I didn't think even existed with my "straight" hair. As soon as I got home I sent my sister a picture of my curly haired self. She asked me if I was running for office. Maybe it's the red balloons on the side (from a kid birthday party), but I'd like to think it's my new curly hair rizz, thanks to Caroline!

I had an appointment for 9am, I paid my deposit, and then almost a day before my appointment, she switches it to 5AM!!!??!?!?!! She's Nigerian, so she's not well versed in American culture/customer service; but if you inconvenience a guest the least you could do is apologize and offer a discount. She did none of that. She came into the shop, LATE, mind you, and didn't even speak. VERY RUDE. She got me out of the shop pretty fast, but the style did not last long (the braids were slipping, and she doesn't know how to tuck your natural hair into the braids). About a month went by, and I needed braids again. I booked with a completely different braider, but unfortunately, she had to cancel on me bc she had an out-of-town trip. I was also going out of town; I had no other braiders available to me at such short notice. So unfortunately, I had to book with this braider again. I didn't want to, but my trip was less than a week away, and no other braider was available. I booked a 6am appointment with her, and on her site, it says the whole style takes 5 hours, meaning I would be done around 11am. This was perfect because I needed to be somewhere at 12. I send her a rather large deposit (most braiders are not asking for $150 deposit, no matter the style, but I digress...), and book my appointment. THE DAY BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT, she tells me to come at 8am. I tell her I can't because I have somewhere to be at 12. She claims she needs to take her son to daycare. (That's not my problem!) She doesn't even apologize nor offer me a discount. Now I have to re-arrange my entire day because you're unprofessional and don't know how to run a successful business. I don't know how they do it in Nigeria, but in AMERICA, when someone prepays for a service, it is like a contract. You break the contract when you change the service!! I should be entitled to my deposit back. Then it hits me, this is a game to her. She takes your deposit, and then completely flips the script by changing your appointment time and inconveniencing you. Her site states that deposits are non-refundable, so that is her loophole. She then argues with me via text, claiming that I should have allowed an extra hour for this service. I DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a business owner, if you know that the service could run over the time, you should warn customers on your site when they book with you. But I guess common sense ain't that common.... She then asks me to come at 7:30 (which still won't work for me bc if the style is allegedly 5 hours long, I still won't make it out in time for my next event.). She then claims I will still be out by 11am... and I'm like how???!!! At first you claim I should've set aside 6 hours for this style, NOW you claim you can do it in 3.5 hours??? HUH?!! (She may be autistic, I'm not sure) But, I have a Bachelor's in Accounting, I'm pretty good in math, and this math ain't mathin'!??!!!! Even though I know she's lying, so she won't have to give me back this deposit, I still go to get my hair braided. I have no other choice, because I've already sent her $150, for a deposit. So my appointment comes, and she's LATE, AGAIN! And she comes in the shop with no apology and begins to blast gospel music on her speakers. I don't know if she was trying to set the mood, because she knows I was pissed, and she was in the WRONG for how she was treating me, but it didn't work. That's a thing these so called "Christians" do to "ward off evil spirits" instead of taking accountability for their actions. But that's another story for another day. It took two people to do my hair, and I still didn't get out in time for my next event. She claimed via text, that I would be done by 11am. 11am came, and they were still working on my hair. I didn't leave the shop until 12pm, the time I was SUPPOSED to be at my next event. Due to her poor planning and abhorrent business acumen, I was inconvenienced and was late to my next event, which made me look bad in front of my peers. She had no remorse, no customer service skills, no apology, and even bad mouthed Black American culture, whilst sitting amongst a whole BLACK ASS AMERICAN. If you hate Black Americans so much, why would you willingly take our money?!!??!???? I will never go back to this braider again. She is very unprofessional and rude. Take your money elsewhere, where your time is not wasted, and the service is worth the money.
