    Tacos as they come!

The real deal. After moving to Portland from California some years back, where we had access to authentic Mexican doshes, slow cooked meats, rich stews, fresh made corn tortillas, we have continually pined for that authenticity and those flavors. This. Tres Reyes, tucked in a small shopping center off the main drag of 181st & Stark, is simply fantastic, delicious. Down to the salsa bar with radishes and stewed peppers and onions, legit and comforting to the core.

Little family run mexican restaurant kind of off the beaten path. Many choices on their big menu on the wall. The little restaurant itself is simple, not a lot of decor, and clean enough. It's got about 10 tables so it's roomy enough that it could handle a few families at a time. I always get the chile relleno and it did not disappoint. Huge and had a rich sauce over all of it. The beans were creamy. The tortillas were warm and wonderful. They've got the great salsa bar with many awesome condiments to add to your entrees like onions, cilantro, limes, roasted jalapenos etc. They had about 6 different salsas and they are HOT and full of spices! They do not serve cerveza. Chips are NOT homemade. They probably don't really serve them except to gringos like me. I use the chips to sample all the salsas. I think I've gained 10 pounds.

If you're from the NW you'll probably like this place. However, as an ex-Arizonan I am still on scope for some REAL Mexican food. Please Portland, stop getting my hopes up and then letting me down. This place is only a-iight. The meat was decent (both the barbacoa and asada), but the rest was pretty mediocre. Salsa bar has lots of options, but nothing actually spicy and the salsas were all a bit on the watery side. Perhaps a burrito wasn't their best offering so I might go back and try tacos or a plate.

It is the kind of place you instantly feel comfortable settling into. Everyone we interacted with was incredibly kind, and the service was genuinely great throughout. We ordered the Quekas with vegan chorizo and black beans and they were SO good, honestly a standout. The chips and guac were also a hit, and I loved that the guac was actually cold. Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. I will definitely be back!

Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Also, the Tetela de Requeson, maiz, beans and sprouting broccoli with a house made requeson - kind of like ricotta cheese - very beautifully plated and so delicious. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past. Now I'm watchful and ready to go back and see what the chef Angel is serving up. What else is so special is Republica was a James Beard award nominee too!

The person at the counter taking our order was helpful, efficient, and their enthusiasm carried over into the dining portion of the visit. My rule of thumb is that if a place has Cochinita Pibil on the menu, then they can be counted on to do things right. My CP taco had just the right amount of spice to leave me with a pleasant, warm feeling inside, about a half hour after we left. The horchata was cool and soothing, even though it had a wonderful, over-the-top cinnamon flavor. By the time we left around 6 PM, the dinner rush had started and a line was forming at the door. The interior is well decorated, modern, and clean. The server was friendly and service was fast. We ordered the bowl, one with carnitas and other with avocado. Both were very tasty! You can tell that the ingredients were fresh, the carnitas were tender and well seasoned. They also had a mango hot sauce brought to the table in a bottle that is amazing. I drenched my bowl with the sauce for the extra kick and flavor. The bowls are very filling. We ended up boxing up half of our food to bring home and finish for a late dinner. Would definitely come again and try their hot sandwiches. Will have to look into whether they sell their mango hot sauce separately as well. I'd buy a bottle!
