Love this place! We've eaten at Mexican restaurants all over Oregon and I still come back to my hometown one! The enchiladas are my favorite, everything is so flavorful and they have the fastest service around. They have late hours and wonderful customer service and if they make a mistake, they're happy to fix it. Can't say anything but great things about this place. Been coming here for over 12 years and I'm so happy it survived Covid and it's still going strong!!!! Also, if you're gluten-free like me, their green enchilada sauce is fantastic and made without any flour. I've only been here once before... years ago. I don't remember being all that impressed the first time, but my partner wanted family style Mexican and he requested we go back. They provide free chips and salsa, but if you want a refill it will cost ya. This food is so damn expensive and very cafeteria-esque. The quesabirra was underwhelming, and were essentially $7 each!! They were accompanied by bland beans and weird tasting rice. I didn't love my overpriced meal and should have just let them throw it away, but felt compelled to take the rest to-go because of the cost. Parking is limited and I passed the building trying to find it. It's a pretty big restaurant, bigger than it looks on the outside. We were seated right away and they brought out complementary chips and salsa. The chips and salsa are made in house. The salsa had a bit of a kick but it wasn't too bad. We ordered chicken and steak fajitas and the enchilada and carne asade taco combo. Both came with beans and rice. The carne asada tacos were so good, they had a smokey bbq flavor and even though they looked dry they were not. The chicken enchilada was probably the best enchilada I've ever had. Met up with friends for a bday celebration. Big, spacious restaurant, great for groups! The first bowl of chips and salsa are free (don't get a refill unless you don't mind paying for it), and the drinks were pricey but they came quickly. Naturally we ordered oversized margaritas that were delicious but lighter on tequila than I'd like. This place used to be an icon. I started going here about 30 years ago, and it was my favorite Mexican restaurant in Portland. I have not been here in at least 5 years, but I was in town, and a friend wanted Mexican, so I took her here. I should have known when I walked in and the place was practically empty- and there weren't hardly any natives there, I should have known there was a problem. (The best test for me of a good ethnic restaurant is when their own people are there eating the food. ) So the chips and salsa were not bad, but that was it. Everything else was flavorless. The meat wasn't seasoned well, the beans & sauce were bland, the rice needed salt, the pico de gallo was simply chopped onions & tomatoes, there wasn't any cilantro or lime juice mixed in, it was horrible. I talked to the manager, who stated that the food was the same as it has always been. I asked him how long he'd been working there, and he said 1.5 years! Poor thing, he obviously doesn't know how iconic & delicious this place USED to be. Unfortunately, we didn't eat the food (but had to pay for it anyways - even though we left it on the table). First time in probably over 10 years that I've been back at this restaurant. It's my sister-in-law's favorite place but she moved outta state years ago. The workers were so friendly and welcoming, very attentive. Our waiter constantly checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was good, large portions and very tasty. And the drinks were also refreshing and delicious. We sat in the bar for a friend's birthday and at the end of the dinner; the staff brought out a hat for him to wear and they all sang to him and gave him a complimentary birthday shot. We have been coming here for years. We had our first date here. On special occasions we like to bring a nice Spanish style bottle of wine. In the past we have paid between $7 and $15 corkage fee. Tonight it was $35. We passed. We could have had pizza and gotten a decent bottle of wine for $35. We brought our own plus $35. Everything else is the same. No prices listed for any of their drinks was a sign as well. $13.99 for a margarita that was most definitely mostly sprite and bottle margarita mix was an interesting sign. No prices listed for guacamole was a sign; $8.99 for a tiny 2oz scoop was a bit of a sign, especially when more than the initial complimentary single chip basket was not included. Portions were decently large for the entree, but food wasn't great. Spending eighty-something dollars for 2 margaritas and 2 of the basic entrees and guacamole... then being charged for a small take away container seemed excessive. Enchiladas don't come with sour cream and guacamole anymore, the sauce on them was brownish instead of the red it used to be and did not taste good. Rice was crunchy. As always, the food was solid. I had steak and shrimp fajitas. The marinade used was delicious. Rice, beans and tortillas all fine. My friend had a crab and chicken burrito I believe, which also was quite good. El Indio's menu is great. So many creative choices. I only complaint this time was the atmosphere. The main dining room could use a real make over. We sat by the window and in the sill were two slugs visiting...inside. I must admit, this was somewhat disturbing and grossed me out a bit. Was always the neighborhood goto but really the prices in this economy are silly now and quality of product falls closer to Taco bell steam tables than what a cook might make because they care. Ingredients are not what u expect ant the menu often needs to be reviewed to get all the ingredients listed. Drinks are solid but chinese joints do just as well. And when I told him that it wasn't my problem they served me food with hair in it either he just rolled his eyes. The was the neighborhood Mexican restaurant growing up. It always kept fond memories in my heart. So, even though I don't live as close, I try to stop in every once in a while to keep tabs on it. And to this day, they still don't disappoint. One of the great things about fajitas, is they come out sizzling and steaming. And El Indio is cranking them out fresh and hot. The meat is perfecto. It is seasoned and has just a little bit of a kick to it. Under the meat, there was primarily onion, but we did find some peppers as well. We would have liked a more even mix. The guacamole side was amazing! For $8 though, I would have though this thing was coming out in a large molcajete. Overall, as for quality of food and taste, they get a perfect 5 stars. Mouth watering every time I think of their salsa too. But, I will say, I know times are getting tough, but the prices are getting a bit high. I feel like you are paying for upscale restaurant food, in the little neighborhood spot. I'd still recommend it to anyone who hasn't been and is looking for just quality Mexican food. I really wanted to like this place. It's close to my house & I saw they had albondigas. Let's start there: the albondigas - 3 meatballs of idk what meat it was a grayish color. No rice in them. And the broth was flavorless with a bag of frozen mixed California veggies. Including cauliflower. then the chimichanga I got beef thinking like shredded. Nope, a can metal flavor tasting ground beef inside. Which turned into a wet burrito with a soggy bed of lettuce. No crunch nothin. My friend ordered crab enchiladas which they told me was only good with the rice which they hate rice from anywhere. They told me to try how terrible it was so I looked at it and was like "noo the crab is grey I'm scared to get sick." Packet horchata as well. Disappointed. Step it up gente. The staff was super friendly, we had a pretty good size party(25) and the staff worked very well together! They seated us quickly, by the time we sat down, we had chips and salsa ready at the table. Brought drinks out right away after we ordered. Food was ordered right after drinks were brought out. The most impressive thing was ALL the food came out at the same time and each plate was piping hot!! Very impressiveness! The food was actually pretty good! We all enjoyed it! My husband and I have been going to this place for a very long time back when they allow kids to eat in the booths in the bar area and even longer then that maybe around 40 years. We stopped going here after the food went down hill, more camercialized and stopped comming her for about 10 years so after along time of boycotting this place we decided to make another attempt to see if things got better, the bartenders still remembered us and after getting the menus and got a drink we noticed the prices we way out of control, the street taco's are probably the best thing on the menu, (dont order the fish as I could seen the bartenders look on his face when I asked him how it was and went for shrimp instead. So we decided to go here tonight just for the street tacos, the asada was tasty I was able to make 10 out of the five tortillas as they double up on them and with some carful finessing you can peel them apart then you can get 10 with the rice and beans it's pretty decent. We decided not to buy any drinks and just get 2 soda water instead and go to one of the other establishments across the street, [Not 108] and much cheaper. Sooooo we finished up dinner and then asked for our tab, good thing I looked at the tab carefully and noticed we were charged for 2 vodka sodas, I flaged lino and said we only ordered soda waters. Not 2 vodka sodas, as I did watch him make them and I was not paying $6,75 apiece for 2 soda waters. It's just water with bubbles. So he replied no they were vodka sodas. I would not order vodka, as my husband and I drink tequila and tequila only. [Bartender] no there was vodka in them, again I Say no there was not. I drink soda water and soda water only. No sugary stuff for me I am type 2 and don't do sugar. He goes to the monitor and gives me a revised tab, I looked at it again and there was still a charge for one vodka sprite now at $6.75 for a drink and a $1.25 for open bar. $8.00 for 2 soda waters in a fancy chimney type glass. Your kidding me, he said it's same price as a soda. Were not going there anymore. We can get 2 tequila sodas for that price and a pint glass of soda water for free. I used to come here with my brother since it was his favorite place ever. We would each get a sizzling fajita plate. It was absolutely delicious. We would have on one sizzling plate strips of chicken, steak, peppers and onions. My brother passed away and I have not gone back until this night. I had the sizzling fajitas. It was absolute shit. It was a sizzling plate like always but it was a mound of indistinguishable beef, chicken and peppers covered in a very bad sauce. It was red and tasted like tomato paste and chili powder. Not separated just mixed and covered. Terrible. My wife ordered a taco salad and it had the same red crap filled into a taco bowl. Our waitress was sweet when she came around but that was not very often. She stopped at the Spanish speaking tables all around us but stopped short of us three times in a row. Another waitress chewed on her and pointed to our table. She finally came over with an attitude. Our tradition has been shattered. Went there for lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant is very nice inside, roomy with a lot of natural light. The service was very quick and good. Unfortunately, I noticed a very overpowering smell of disinfectant upon walking in. I Had the Ranchero Burrito for $18.99, which didn't have much taste. It was too full of shredded chicken, and I didn't notice any beans or cheese in the burrito, which would have made it more tasty. The rice and beans on the side really had no taste, and there was just a small amount of melted cheese on top. They did supply a good amount of guacamole and sour cream, which helped.
