TLDR: Expanded offerings. More shrimp options! Same excellent food. We were out at Third Thursday downtown and I thought I had mentioned to the-woman-who-lets-me-live-with-her (thanks Mike), that I was hungry and ready for dinner, but apparently we missed that bit of communication. When the growling of my stomach was almost audible outdoors, I said we should go to Tamazula because we could sit outside with the dog, who came along to the street fair with us. They have expanded their menu and we ordered the Camarones Divorciado because we love shrimp. Now you can get ceviche in loads of places. Heck, the local mercado has more than one, from a simple aguachile, to fish, and then shrimp ceviche. Most of the time, though, the shrimp are not actually "cooked" in the acidic liquid (naranjas agrias, lime, maybe lemon), they are cooked, and then marinated in the "broth." This is not that. Fully half of the Divorciado is freshly marinated raw shrimp, awash in a delightful broth of juices, cucumber, and onion. The shrimp just whitening at the edges as the acids bite into the flesh. It takes confidence in your ingredients and your techniques to serve a fresh (not pre-cooked) shrimp ceviche and this was an amazing success. I absolutely adored it as did my spouse. We ate everything but the plate. I was so entranced by the ceviche that i ate without much curiosity, the other shrimp portion on the plate. Copped shrimp in a spicy red sauce was also excellent, but I was so blown away by the ceviche I probably didn't give it a fair shake. (ate it all though) Still not to be missed. Birria, ceviche and micheladas. Birrias Tamazula has a winning trifecta!! We had textbook perfect versions of all three on our recent visit. - Birria -- whether served in tacos on soft corn tortillas, in gently fried queso birria tacos, or as part of a generous platter -- was tender and flavorful, but not overly fatty or salty. The consommé, which comes with the platters or is available as a separate side, is complex, not detectably dependent on MSG for flavor. Beef and goat birria were available, the latter non-gamy. - A shrimp ceviche was the real deal: Fresh shrimp were dressed with acid to order, meaning that the shrimp did not come out rubbery and "overcooked" as it does in many an establishment. The amount of spice and balance of vegetables (cucumber, red onion, a touch of tomato) was absolutely perfect in my book. Our waitress was kind enough to bring over a small ramekin of what must've been house made green salsa -- extra spicy -- that was fantastic with the ceviche as well. Crisp, non-oily tostadas and tortilla chips were served alongside. - Micheladas, made with your choice of beer (Modelo for me always), are well mixed with plenty of tamarind and spice. Be careful, though. The large one comes in a mug as big as your head. It's delicious, definitely made for at least two. The Pardner and I, no lightweights, had trouble finishing it. I won't just pay this establishment the dubious compliment of being the most delicious restaurant we tried in Oregon, given that we've mostly been stuck eating overpriced, Sysco-sourced resort town food (though of course it was). The birria and ceviche we tried at Birrias Tamazula were as good or perhaps better than versions we enjoy at a certain Michelin-recognized establishment in NYC. All of the food was delicious and service was so welcoming - we really enjoyed our impromptu lunch date here. We had chips and guacamole to start - the chips were warm and crisp and the guacamole was the best we've had in a minute. I had the dorado plate which included beans and beef birria and soup. It was a lot of food but I almost finished it given it was so flavorful. We are looking forward to going back! read more

I had never had birrias before visiting Birrias Tamazula. We ordered 4 different tacos to share. Not being the most adventurous eater, I tried the goat birria first with the thinking if I didn't like it the beef birria, fish and shrimp tacos would be more enjoyable. The first bite had great flavor, to my delight. All of the tacos tasted great with fresh ingredients, but my wife and I agreed we really liked the goat best of all. As a testament, I had goat birrias there 3 times that week. Since then we have shared with our friends, and are there regularly. Lately we have been going Friday nights for the Carne Asada special. Everything is fresh and delicious. Above that though, we are always made to feel welcome. Always greeted with a warm smile, and lately a cold beer! read more

Searched for a top rated place to eat while driving through Gresham and Birrias Tamazula popped up. So I told my hubby let's go check this place out. When we walked in we were greeted and seated right away. The staff were friendly and the service was wonderful. My hubby and I ordered the birria braised plate with beans and five tortillas, fish tacos and shrimp/ cheese tacos. Tasty, yummy, satisfying and absolutely delicious! My hubby liked the green salsa so we bought a little bottle of it and also ordered some tortillas to take home. Yelp for the win! My husband and I had some running around to do last night so, on a whim, we decided to check yelp for a new restaurant to try in our area. Birrias Tamazula popped up...5 stars...hadn't heard of it before...my husband LOVES Mexican food... The stars aligned and we decided to pop in. We are so glad we did! From the jump we were hooked. We ran into whom we believe to be the owner outside. He was so friendly and accommodating, engaging us in conversation before we even made it inside. He let us know that they had a couple groups there for birthdays and that it would be loud b/c one of them brought a band. Awesome...truly! They were very busy so I will admit that the service was initially a bit slow but the food came out quickly and all of the staff we encountered were wonderful. I don't pretend to be an expert in Mexican food but from this novice to you, if you want yummy, authentic Mexican food...check this place out. This is not an Americanized Mexican restaurant with a huge menu. (If that's what you want, this isn't for you.) They seem to specialize in Birria and seafood. Everything was SOOO good! As if the food wasn't enough, the vibe was spectacular. It felt like we were walking into a community event where everyone knew and loved each other. Flavour was nice and balance with the soup. The tacos tasted like it was freshly made and it had nice flavour and texture. Birrias tacos had a good crunch to it. I stopped by with a friend for a quick lunch the other day. We ordered consomé and several types of birria tacos (goat, beef, etc). I liked it. The consome was not as spicy as what I had at another birria place in Portland, which I thought was good. But it didn't wow me -- I'd probably go for just regular tacos, to be honest. The location is great, and it is a nice big open dining area with tons of seating and big windows to let in light, with several chairs out on their front sidewalk as well. read more

The place is fairly new that being said the place is pretty clean and organized. This Mexican restaurant has lots of seating and they do offer outside seating as well. I ordered the camarones zarandeados and let me tell you ... the serving sizes are HUGE ! Not many places that do sea food offer as much bang for your buck, it feels like to me in my experience. This a family owned hidden little gem in Downtown Gresham. We went on a quiet afternoon right after the lunch hour and were amazed at how tasty the food was. We had the seafood platter (Botana Mixta), fish tacos, and quesobirria tacos. Everything was fresh and delicious! I thought the Botana Mixta platter was going to be small but I was full even after sharing with my partner. The salsas are delicious and the restaurant is well taken care of and clean. The owners are super friendly and waiting on the food was worth the wait. I highly recommend anyone to visit this little gem, you will not be disappointed. House-made corn tortillas, authentic birria (goat), and some of the best guacamole I've ever had. Clean little dining area and very pleasant staff. There's a couple little tables out front where we usually sit with our dog. The fish tacos are killer! This is not the place you go to stuff your face before a food coma like La Carreta.
