Of all the times I've been here, this was my first show at the Triad Stage, thanks to Yelp/our CM. The box office provide some great info to prepare for the show. The parking deck allowed for entry to the building from the 3rd deck. Elevators are available, however I took the stairs for a more scenic route. I didn't feel cramped, likely because I was seated on the end of a row. Even with a mostly full house, my view of the performers was not obstructed. I wasn't sure which dates would be available but was able to obtain tickets to the Wednesday show. From start to finish the staff was extremely helpful. It was nice to see an actor from some films I'd previously seen on a different platform. Though I didn't partake, the bar was stocked with small snacks & beverages, both non-alcoholic & alcoholic beverages. There was also seating on the second level above the bar area to relax or even grab a drink before the show. read more

What a fabulous set for the Agatha Chritie play. Actors were quite good as well.. the theater was intimite w gallery and lower level seating. Very close in, no trouble seeing. Reasonably priced and a professional performance. read more

The theater is top notch and not too small or big. Every seat has an excellent view. The gallery level offers small intimate table seating with great views of course. The concessions are reasonably priced. The lobby is stylish and inviting. I especially like the chandeliers. Love the neon signage out front. Sound and lighting are excellent. Seats are comfortable. Triad Stage offers the Greensboro community an exciting, professional theatre experience that usually one can only find in NYC. It has a very friendly and helpful staff and always a wonderful show for each season. If you're a student and you want to go see a show, it only costs $8 with your ID and you have to get your ticket 1hr before the show starts, so you could possibly not even get in, but it's still a fun adventure. They also offer $10 Gallery seats to all shows, but a fair warning, the gallery seats aren't that comfortable and sometimes you can get the seat that's right next to the podium railing, so it kind of limits your view. Though, if you want a great seat and you've got the cash, it's well worth it. The lobby bar also offers snacks, beer and wine, but you might want to get out there a minute before intermission starts so you can get a jump on the lines. The best thing about Triad Stage is when they premiere shows. It's always exciting when you know you're the first to see this play being performed! So, the next time you're looking for a romantic evening out and you're sweetie is tired of the movies, I bet you'll score big points when you suggest Triad Stage. read more

I guess Triad Stagers aren't big Yelpers because I know there are hundreds, if not thousands in the Greensboro area that would give this theater a full five stars. This theater is a center focal point for Greensboro's downtown and really was the beginning of the downtown revitalization in the early 2000's. And if you see a play here, please take the time to eat in one of the nearby independent restaurants (Liberty Oak is a favorite of patrons). But, on to the show! I've seen probably twenty plays and a few acoustic concerts over the past seven years at this theater. Most of them I love, some of them I like and a few have even left me a bit disturbed. I agree with reviewer Kate D - Beautiful Star was amazing and their version of Glass Managerie was probably my least fave production I have seen at Triad Stage. But the productions are always well done, with excellent professional actors, many brought in from the New York theater scene, and always with gorgeous sets. Side note - Triad Stage collaborates with local universities, such as UNCG to allow their students learn the trade of set design and creation. We in Greensboro are so lucky to have this theater and I encourage anyone reading this to check out at least one play here. They run plays throughout the year and about once every year or two, they feature a play written by the talented co-founder Preston Lane with music by another Greensboro marvel Lauralyn Dossett. Lane and Dossett have done three (I think) of these musical/plays to date, each one a unique and beautiful work honoring the cultural heritage of North Carolina. I highly recommend Triad Stage for live theater. I think our little hometown theater rivals any in larger cities. read more

Triad Stage is a jewel in our city. Preston Lane presents unique productions that are often themed in NC folk lore. The plays are a nice blend of drama and comedy and are always thought provoking. I've found productions of non-original plays to always have a unique slant which gives the plays a fresh feel. I do have to admit that some treatments are a little weird, but most plays are witty and several including A Beautiful Star, absolutely beautiful. Casts are usually a nice blend of NY actors, UNC-G Drama students, and local residents and overall is top notch. By far the best local theater available. The venue is very unique to this play-goer. It reminds me of a small theater in college. It's very intimate putting the viewer close to the action. I would not recommend the upper level seats on the side, but that's mainly because I don't care to sir in a cafe chair for two hours. Other than those, every other seat in the house is great. I've always been amazed by the stage sets. For such a limited space, Triad Stage creates very original and flexible sets that morph from scene to scene. The creativity of the sets is worth seeing by itself. The acoustics are very good as well. Ticket prices are very reasonable making Triad Stage one of the best entertainment values in the Triad. read more

Triad Stage - Performing Arts Near Me - Greensboro, North Carolina

Triad Stage is very hit and miss - as are most regional theaters. I've seen some truly lovely productions there (Beautiful Star and Tartuffe, to name two right off the top of my head - both were amazing!) and some really horrendous ones (they did a production of The Glass Menagerie last year that was so pretentious and overworked I was sure Tennessee Williams was spinning in his grave, and they also did a production of Ghosts that was so odd and discordant that it made an unpleasant play even more unpleasant). I studied theater, I've seen a lot of theater, I've actually worked on shows at TriadStage and I often feel that their productions are trying so hard to be unique and thought-provoking that they don't tell the story of the play very well. Theater (especially if your focus tends to be often-produced American or well-known European plays) isn't supposed to be about smoke and mirrors, and if the audience leaves talking about how cool this special effect was or how neat and avant-garde the set was (unless, of course, you're a local theater student and one of your semester assignments is to go see a show at Triad and then write about how the design of the show reflects on the theme of the play at hand), then hasn't the production kind of missed its own point? I was always taught that theater is about the story and the journey of the characters involved, and that anything that detracts from this should be minimized. Amazing how most of my memories from shows at Triad are of elements that jolted me right out of my "suspension of disbelief" and made me think, "What in the world is THAT?" or "Hey, that thing the set/lights just did was super cool, I wonder how they did that?" My memories are not of the stories of the characters...as the playwright intended. Granted, I have not seen a play at Triad since moving away from the area a year ago, and maybe my assessment is no longer valid. I'm not going to pay money to go find out, though. As for the space itself - most of the seats have good views, although the gallery seating on house left and right have awkward sight lines and the actors rarely play to those sides. There is cabaret space upstairs, known as the UpStage Cabaret. It's tiny, but has a great view of Elm Street (because clearly, when you go to see a show you care about the view out the windows, but I digress). I agree with the previous reviewer that it's awkward to move around in when it's crowded. But the shows up there are inexpensive to go see, and vary widely in content and quality. In all, I really appreciate what TriadStage is about. Greensboro needs a good, local theater - the downtown area, and the arts scene in general, are much more vibrant with Triad around. I also appreciate that Triad has partnerships with local universities to give directing, designing, and acting opportunities to students (myself included). However, I wish that their productions were a bit less about the spectacle, and more about thought. Call up Aristotle; he knows how it's done. read more

My wife and I are season ticket holders. During the past year we have seem some of the best regional theater we have ever seen, and in some cases, some of the best theater anywhere. Triad Stage's production of Shipwrecked was delightful, hilarious, and amazing. But the play of the season for us was definitely tonight's performance of Preston Lane's "Tennessee Playboy". I am telling you this is happy Southern farce of the highest order. Take some time from your electronics and drop by for a nice treat! read more

Ppl who complain about an establishment online over petty, often uncontrollable issues, annoy me more than you can imagine. Ppl don't realize how difficult it is as a local business owner....in a city like Greensboro....in a business I'd largely categorize as "art and entertainment!" There's not a person on Yelp or any of these sites that could pull off opening, running, producing, marketing, etc etc etc a small theater!!! This theater is legendary. I don't care if you have to sit on the ground and pee in a cup, you should be thankful places like this exist. It does so much for the city we live in, and probably does little for the pockets of the ppl who own/run/perform. Thank you, Triad stage, for enhancing the culture of this city, being one of the most talked about spectacles for tourists, putting GSO On the map in the world of theater, and for existing all of this time even when members of the community complain about seating, parking, and convenience of ticket sales! I was able to go to Triad Stage for My Fair Lady and for the TED Talk Conference. I love this place. The layout can be a bit confusing if you aren't familiar with the place. Everything is always so clean and everything seems to be in place. Both times I was able to visit the staff there made me feel like they were waiting for me and had known me for a long time. The quality of the performers should never be in question here. The performers in My Fair Lady. They were all amazing. The producers, light and sound crew during the TED Talk Conference were also top notch. Great! read more

Let's get one thing out in the open right now: I dislike non-musical plays. I would rather stay at home and play with the cat than watch Anna Christie again. Even though I dislike the source material, I think the Triad Stage does a spectacular job of presenting the work and I doubt it would have looked any different in a big budget playhouse in New York or Los Angeles. The smoke, the lighting, and most importantly the actors are all spot on. You can feel that a lot of thought was really out into each piece of the stage and to the overall ambiance. My wife used to see plays back in Los Angeles and attests to the Triad Stage's strong production values. Another things that makes this place great, is that it's mainly subsidized by donators, so ticket prices are reasonable for regular people. I think they estimate that only 40% of the costs of running the theater come from ticket sales and 60% comes from the generous supporters of the stage. Parking is in a garage attached to the house, and was free when I went on a Sunday. The building is fairly large and there is seating on 3-sides (check out their website for the seating arrangement.) I actually got to sit at both the upper balcony because I came late, but actually had seats in the 2nd row so I moved during the intermission. I loved my visit to Triad Stage. I saw Steve Everett perform a "hometown" show. (He is great, and very funny; you should check him out if you haven't heard his music by now.) Wonderful staff and a well-thought out season. One of the reasons I love Triad is that they really try to read the community they're in, and their season is designed specifically for this city. Beautiful facility, and when I saw BEAUTIFUL STAR, they gave us free gingerbread cookies. Go see things at Triad, especially their original programming. Triad stage has its main stage and a separate theater upstairs called UpStage Cabaret. Regarding the main stage, it's not too bad, not too great, either. The seats aren't very comfortable, and the interior is pretty bare-bones. You don't get the elegant theater atmosphere like you get from Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium; it's much more "bohemian," complete with a lobby that smells like either mildew or feet. Parking is nonexistent; you have to either take your chances with street parking (good luck!) or park in a parking deck and schlep. Might I take a moment to complain about how they sell tickets? If you want to buy them online, and not go all the way downtown to the box office in person, you have to pay a $2 fee per ticket. I guess Triad Stage thinks it's the year 1900 and everyone lives/works within a mile of downtown. As for the UpStage Cabaret, I don't have anything positive to say about it. Seating consists of café tables & chairs. The room looks nice and spacious in the website photos, but when it's full of people at a sell-out performance, it's crowded and stuffy, and there's no wiggle room. God help anyone who has to get up and pee during a show. I noticed some people had to sit at tables with their backs to the stage. After having to park 3 blocks away, my wife and I arrived right at showtime to find no two empty chairs together, so I had to plead with the staff to let us take a seat on two chairs "reserved for volunteers" all the way in the back. The view from there was so obstructed that we just gave up and left before the performance even started, forfeiting $42 and ruining our wedding anniversary. I had an awful experience and WILL NEVER GO TO UPSTAGE CABARET AGAIN. In summary, the main stage is fine if you don't mind cramped leg room and the enchanting aroma of mildew, but AVOID, AVOID, AVOID UpStage Cabaret. read more

I've reviewed Triad Stage before, but it's been a few years. TS isn't community theatre, don't be confused. This isn't Wizard of Oz with your neighbor as the Tin Man. TS brings in top notch talent, but also uses local talent (of which we have plenty around here). I've seen MANY shows here in Greensboro, and now in Winston-Salem as well, and have rarely been disappointed. This is professional theatre right here in our backyard. I saw a show last night that made me laugh, made me cry and made me think. That's value folks. When you feel all the feels, that sounds like a good time: and that's Triad Stage. read more

what triad stage does for greensboro cannot be understated. the fact that the city has experience a major resurgence in the time that triad stage has been here is no coincidence. for that alone, the community should embrace this great organization. as for the work, when art is done well, it may be "good" or "bad" but it will always get people talking. while people may not have always loved the work at triad, you could never deny that it was interesting and thought-provoking. they choose plays that make you think and want to discuss the work with someone. this is what makes even the plays you don't like as much a success. this place is a true gem, y'all. please do go check it out. we have to support these sort of cultural opportunities in our community or we are going to lose them and that is good for no one. read more
