The decaf espresso in this place is so fantastic. That is pretty hard to find. Their morning pastries are also high quality with good choice. The service was impeccable: super friendly and extremely competent Thr ambience cannot be beat. Whether you are outside in the backyard or the front sidewalk, or inside with l high ceilings, Great windows, spacious tables, shelves in exposed brick The backyard is large. beautiful and shady ... and the front sidewalk café tables stretch all the way out into the middle of Pearl Street. Lots of social distancing as well as beautiful trees and interesting people to watch. The inside decor is Homey .., and feels intellectual. The book selection seems well curated. I now officially LOVE the Trident. I have been coming here with friends, family, or independently about 5 evenings a week for the past few months.. I love the low-key and kind customer service, the consistently high quality coffee, tea, chai, and other offerings.. I also still love the bookstore and the publishing opportunity offered there.. Trident is 100% my favorite place to hang out with a book or some homework. You can sit at one of their tables on Pearl Street and have fun watching the action, or relax in the back patio. Inside, the coffee shop feels warm and cozy with pretty cool wood paneling. Beautiful coffee shop, but I am astounded at how rude the baristas were. While waiting in line, the baristas were actively making fun of multiple different people in the shop, constantly talking and taking a really long time to make drinks. Three people came to complain about the chai tea within 15 minutes and they just laughed in their faces and said "you don't know what a real chai is" and "you just couldn't handle the spice". I also got the chai and thought it was pretty watery and bland... I think it actually needed more flavor, which is what the other customers were saying as well. They also laughed at someone for ordering a sandwich, then said to the next person in line very audibly "who the fuck did that person think he was for ordering a sandwich here." Wouldn't recommend this place for these reasons. I really hope the owner sees this because their behavior was honestly disgusting, and I heard a lot of people in the shop complaining about their behavior as well. (I didn't get their names but it happened around 4:10 today). read more

I've been going to The Trident since 1990. I know. A long time. It's changed over the years (haven't we all?), but it somehow maintains that old Boulder feeling. I was just there today. Bought a used book and a card to send to a friend. The coffee has always been great and the outdoor seating in the back in the best. We were recommended this place by locals. The book store is nice & we loved the atmosphere. It was clean and they have a 90 min limit for dining so others can enjoy but the coffee was not good. Also, the barista had no bra on and a shirt with no sleeves and my partner and I both saw her entire breast and all her long unshaven armpit hair. So I guess if you are into that kinda thing it's cool but I'm not so no thanks. My partner didn't like his coffee either, even after adding the complementary cream & sugar we just couldn't get that yuck taste out. Located just down Pearl Street, a block west of the mall, Trident serves as one of Boulder's boutique book stores and coffee shops. Their espressos are great, but can't say I have had much else in terms of food or beverage - they have a vey limited food selection, but then again, that's not what you're there for. Stopped by recently to get some late night work done, and was pleased to stumble across a late-night silent movie showing. Hoping to catch the cinema while I worked, I set up shop outside in their back patio. Unfortunately, they were charging a $5-10 donation for a viewing, and I just couldn't muster the will to throw down for that mystery (This may be a weekly occurrence, every monday night starting at 8:30). Ventured inside for some work-time. The music was a little loud and the constant movements around the workspace did make it a little difficult to concentrate. What I really like about Trident is their Newspaper bin. There is a bin of various newspapers and magazines placed near the ordering counter. I've stumbled across Issues of The New Yorker to Wired. For someone who really enjoys reading, but not so much paying for subscriptions, this place is pretty sweet. There's also a sandbox for you enjoyment in the rear outdoor/patio area of the shop. First thing that happens to me when I get there - some hippie guy raves about gettings calendars at the front cart outside the store proper for $1. Picked up some Duchamp biography for $6 and a copy of Ada (Nabokov) for a ... dollar. Not Moe's in Berkeley, but will have to do for Boulder. Has more of the 'standard' used paperbacks and some history / sociology tomes, though not as much as I would have preferred. Probably not enough UP stuff either. Can't speak about the coffeehouse. UPDATE 2008 October Finally went into the coffeehouse for the first time. Beware on Sunday afternoons: it's really impossible to find a seat. You'll have to double up with strangers, but most of the patrons are rather chill so it won't be a problem. Some of the patrons started moving tables to the bookstore area and having coffee there. It became difficult to browse, say, the Fiction middle alphabet section without eavesdropping on every little thing that is being said. However, instead of being a detriment, I find this charming. read more

Trident is an outstanding example of its kind of bookstore: small and well organized. Art, religion, and philosophy are strongly represented, with a lot of fiction too, but not much history. This is an excellent browsing shop, with a delightfully well curated selection of books. It's the kind of place where I find numerous interesting titles of which I was unaware or only tenuously familiar. I love to find a place that feels so comfortable yet exposes me to something new. As a bonus, the prices are quite reasonable given the physical quality of the stock and the aesthetics of the store itself. The attached coffee shop--separate if you want it to be but accessible if you don't--is a double bonus. read more

A small bookshop but it has a nicely curated selection. For example, I found a copy of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale, but in a hardcover UK import edition from 2009. (I also searched for Don Winslow's Savages, a slightly less literary but no less incredible book, and they didn't have it.) The cafe forms the other half of Trident, with plenty of indoor seating and a big patio. The patio is sparsely tabled, so no risk of crowding, and it's covered, so you could sit here in the rain. It also had a little sandbox for kids, and a small fountain. The cafe offers a pretty wide selection of teas, from black to herbal. I didn't try the food. (As for coffee, I didn't try it, but a friend of mine who's come here many times says it's good, if maybe not as good as what you'd find in the super-coffee-snob shops in town. But those shops don't have books, nor patios with fountains and sandboxes.) read more

Excited to explore but space was tight as one tries to maneuver narrow aisles, people sitting about with coffee table and book reading throughout the bookcases. Didn't see or it was challenging to find used books, found a new one I was intrigued by and couldn't find a price. Staff didn't seem welcoming nor customer service oriented. Left a bit disappointed on the experience after being recommended to check it out by a local. The other bookseller we tried was definitely more superior to this adventure. read more

The only coffee place in the Pearl Street area we could find that serves coffee past 8pm or so on a weekend. The coffee was pretty good. Lots of books. Tons. Felt a little crammed and claustrophobic to me. There were nooks and crannies with tables. Felt pretty private until someone came around a tall bookshelf and scared the crap out of me. Glad this place is in Boulder and serves coffee for us exhausted parents who simply want to make it past 9pm on a date night. read more
