The best part of this excursion was that they're dog friendly and of course we opted to get a doggy captain hat! Thankfully my husband is a good driver but it looked simple enough. I also recommend getting an early time slot bc we were almost the only ones in the water. I think I'd be more nervous if the water was crowded like later in the day. Decided to surprise my wife with a relaxing duffy boat ride for our wedding anniversary with some friends. Went straight to Yelp to do my research (thanks Yelp!). Originally, I was going to book with a rental company for Newport Harbor, but then came across a Groupon for PCH Electric Boats. After checking out their website and reading the glowing reviews on Yelp, I immediately booked. I called to book a white duffy boat on the day before Thanksgiving. The person on the phone was friendly, courteous and really easy-going. They asked if I had a Groupon and if I could provide the voucher number. BOOM. done. all set! I received an email with VERY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS (including photos) of where to park and where the meeting area was. Additionally, a link to the waiver form that every passenger is required to fill out (even your babies) was included in that email. On the day of our booking, we were met by the owner Grant who I'm pretty sure was the same friendly, courteous and easy-going person I talked to on the phone days earlier when I booked. He provided specific instructions on where we're allowed to go and what to avoid. He saw we had several small children in our party and recommended everyone use the restroom nearby before boarding since there is not place to stop out in the harbor. After we came back from our potty break, Grant lead us down to the dock and got all the kiddos fitted for their life vests (all in great condition btw). He assisted us with our bags so we could focus on boarding the kids safely and even took a group photo for us! The boat was clean and easy to drive. The sound system was bumping and all the windows easily lifted up for that nice harbor breeze. It was a beautiful and memorable day. On our return, Grant was at the dock with one of his employees ready to receive us. He guided us in smoothly and as we were gathering our belongings and cleaning up, he helped all the kids out and grabbed our bags. We handed Grant a tip and immediately he passed it over to his employee who was going to do the post-ride cleaning.. what a great boss!!!! Definitely will be booking with PCH Electric Boats again! We booked for 3 hours (3:30-6:30pm), which turned out to be the perfect amount of time. The harbor is beautiful, and it was so much fun cruising around and checking out all the homes. I rented a Duffy Boat for 2 hours on my 17th wedding anniversary on 3/20/16 after trying to rent at another place. James came to the rescue and was easy to deal with and beyond informative with his instructions on the Duffy boat operation. Even though I've rented plenty of boats in the past James gave me helpful tips to ensure our safety. The boat was clean and had an awesome sound system so we could hear the tunes we wanted to during our cruise. James also gave us a bottle of champagne to enjoy during our cruise!! The kids really like the Key West bow rider, my wife loves the the center console and I think I like the pilot house best. We have explored several of the local harbors including Long Beach, San Pedro and Alamitos bay. The water inside the break wall is so nice and smooth and it's been lots of fun getting up and close to the container ships, cruise ships and even the Queen Mary. We are planning our first trip to Catalina and the kids can't wait. I think we're going to get a Hotel the first time but after that I look forward to camping near two harbors, it's going to be a blast. The boats are nice and very reliable and the company has great policies and procedures to fall back on just in case the boat does actually break down. Sea Tow memberships, GPS tracking systems and a good VHS radio keep you safe. If you're gonna go far away or even stay the night somewhere you create a float plan so they always know where you're at. There's a little bit of training involved no matter what kind of boating experience you have. They don't just hand you the keys and tell you to go have fun. They educate you about the local hazards, tides and wind patterns. They teach you how to handle breakdowns, man overboard situations and who to contact and how to contact the different harbormasters, police agencies, fire departments and Coast Guard dispatchers. The staff is awesome. The owner is very nice and I think fair. He runs his company with rules and regulations but he's also human and treats his customers like they are a friend or maybe even family. I have witnessed him go over and above for not just my family but others too. His employees are extremely nice and again very well trained with great attention to detail in customer service. They have a system in place that literally get you in and out quickly and safely so that you can enjoy yourself on the water. The owner and his staff really make a difference and bring a tremendous amount of value to the program. Again, I'm a very happy customer and if the idea of owning a boat something you're considering I highly recommend you check this place out first. There's no maintenance, there's no slip fees, there's no trailers and there's no storage. You don't waist your time cleaning the boat. All you do is drive the boat and then park it and walk away, again I highly recommend Freedom Boat Club especially the Huntington Beach location.

When I signed up, I was told and promised that I would be able to use my sea time with freedom boat club towards USCG Captain's license. 2 years & over 100 days waisted!! They've been bouncing me from supervisor to supervisor for over 6 months and still have not produced the documentation. They will not provide see-Time documents as they promise. They didn't give us any instructions on how to use the kayak, which is especially important for beginners. There was one staff member at the launch area, and when we were trying to get into the water, no one helped us push the kayak. What made it worse was that one staff member inside the shop pointed at us and laughed, and the staff by the shore joined in. It felt very disrespectful and unprofessional. Overall, a very poor experience. Definitely would not come back.
