Over the course of several weeks, I worked closely with Lina while arranging the additional support my mother needed following her surgery, which had been significantly delayed due to the Kaiser strike. Throughout the process, Lina was professional, compassionate, kind, and extremely helpful. There were several frustrating moments related to scheduling issues, many of which I expressed to Kaiser. Lina was always honest and transparent, explaining that all of their Spanish-speaking caregivers were currently assigned to other clients. Even so, she consistently took the time to listen to my concerns, answer questions, and help explore possible solutions. Lina maintained regular communication to ensure my mother received the specific care she needed when she needed it. While there were some scheduling challenges along the way, Lina remained proactive, attentive, and supportive, helping us navigate each obstacle. She also worked closely with her scheduling team to make sure my mother's care needs were met. I am grateful for Lina's dedication and commitment throughout this process. He actually picked up the phone. He talked with me for about 40 minutes, explaining all the services he offers and how it would look helping my dad (and mom). He knows his stuff! Very compassionate. Knowledgeable. Caring. There are a lot of things to consider when hiring a caregiver. Legalities. Regulations. Matching a caregiver with a client. So much more. Dwight explained it all so clearly. Big one: If you have a long-term healthcare insurance policy, make sure to check the waiting period. My mom hadn't looked at the policy in years, and sure enough there was a waiting period. His advice on activating it was on point. He met with my mom and I within a week of first talking on the phone. He re-explained to my mom all the services he offers. She was able to use him for only a week....my dad returned to the hospital. And never returned home. Dwight was so supportive. Would not hesitate to call Dwight.

Thankfully, Kaiser, my insurance, ordered me home health physical therapy and occupational therapy.  Never had this type of therapy at home, but I'm so fortunate to have that. Honestly, I went from bedridden to getting my strength back because of this dedicated team. They pushed me to my limits, but I needed it to desperately get my life back. I'd like to recognize Swati S, my occupational therapist. She was the cure and key to getting myself back to health. Her methods have given me my life back. I'll be ready and back to work soon. There's a trade off finding a caregiver company who would provide caregiver versus a private…read morecaregiver. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, we signed with 24 hr home care. In the beginning, we have tried numerous caregivers. We started with 24/7 then cut back to only 12 hours once my husband was feeling better. Then back again for 24/7 as my husband's condition got worst. Some caregivers were very awesome and caring but some are bad such as sleeping on their job, showing up late, or just doesn't do anything unless you tell them to. We were fortunately to encounter some great ones who took great care of my husband until his final days. There are few things you need to be aware of: 1) Make sure you keep track the dates and times that the caregiver is present for your loved ones. I had a few days when there was no caregiver and still get charged for it. Or, I get charged double for the same shift. 2) Don't depend fully on the caregiver. They are like us, they might call in sick or have car problems. Make sure you have a back up plan and be ready to take the shift yourself. We had a hard time especially around holidays, when no caregiver would take the shift or cancel on us at the last minute. 3) Make sure your care plan is very clear as there's a potential someone new caring for your loved one everyday. 4) They are non-medical caregiver, so make sure you plan out the pills in an organizer so they can dispense and just let your loved one take the med. Overall despite some hiccups, some of the caregivers took great care of my husband until his final days and we are very grateful to them. It's a tough job mentally and emotionally. I applaud their bravery for taking such hard job.

She knew exactly how to push me just enough to make real progress without ever pushing too far. That balance made all the difference. In just three weeks, I've made more progress than I expected, and I truly credit that to her expertise and encouragement. This is not an easy industry in which to work, and it's nice to meet others who lead with their heart. Taking great care appears to just come naturally.

We chose Home Instead as it seemed to be the best option at the time. A Home Instead Exec comes to…read moreyour home and spends several hours understanding what your parent's needs are. Generally we were happy with the services however you still have to stay on top of the care givers who can be hit or miss. It takes a while to find the right ones and sometimes they are switched around without any notification and even, on occasion do not show up but the agency does find someone. You have to pay an initial deposit upon signing including a pre-payment or services and if you don't use the 24 hour shift rate, it goes to an hourly fee (we paid $22 per hour). The carers unfortunately don't even get half this amount. It is a business at the end of the day and they are there to make a profit. After nearly a year of using their services, we chose another option. We wanted our mother to get out of the house, go to senior functions, the beach, etc. Mother was a challenge to get up and out but the reality was that the majority of caregivers let her have her own way and did not take her out of the house - it was just easier that way. More like a babysitting service. We did not want this as she could sleep the entire day away if allowed. The two carers that we had most of the time were good, however we moved Mother to a secure environment in the end because we just felt she wasn't getting the stimulation that we wanted by having someone care for her in her own home. It is a challenging situation and every family is different but having Mother stay in her own home didn't work out for us.
