I think this place recently has new ownership since they were totally different last year - and better. The prices seem WAY more expensive, and they up-charged for the table-balance things. Last year, those were free (and they were penguins - I did like these tables more.). We paid something like $80 for a family of four - admission, skate rental, and two balancers. Also, the skates were extremely oddly designed. I have never seen skates with laces so short before. I couldn't wrap them around the ankle of the boot, and as such they were very loose - so much so that I had to go down two sizes, at which point they were just pinching my feet. My kids also complained that they were too loose and then too tight. Finally, we started very soon after they opened and the rink was already difficult to skate on because of all the marks on it. We didn't see the zamboni until we were leaving, around 11:30. They really needed to use it earlier. I don't think we'll come back here to skate anymore. read more

As a previous reviewer mentioned, the downtown Silver Spring ice rink has changed hands in terms of management. Prices are pretty expensive - I was charged $13 for admission without renting skates. At the Wheaton Ice arena, you can get admission and skates for this price. I saw a mom who paid $36 for two kids to enter and skate! Plus, the rink is not as well-kept. On multiple occasions, the ice is quite rough to skate on, because they aren't Zamboni-ing properly or often enough. I probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

Okay location and parking is pretty accessible. The website is inaccurate though, they're no longer limiting the number of people on the ice. They have high school employees and don't regulate congregating and poor skating etiquette. The penguins are not available for rent- pretty sure people just walk off with them and they're constantly in use by older kids so it took over half an hour to get one for my four year old. The rink was EXCESSIVELY crowded and the employees didn't come on the ice to regulate at all. There were hockey players weaving in and out and throwing up ice, kids congregating on the edges and talking to their non skating friends outside the rink AND families trying to skate with their kids. When the rink was reiced, they let people on too soon while it was wet - meaning that anyone who fell got ice cold and wet- and it also slushed up quickly. Overall, the experience left something to be desired. Tweaks with management could ensure a lovely experience but at least it was safe and family friendly- But leave valuables in your vehicle as they don't have lockers here!!! read more

I visited this place on 11/28 thanksgiving night. My cousin has had a tough fight with chemo and I wanted to take him out and get his mind off it so we came to skate right before close as this was last min. When we arrived the cashier told us they were about to close and I told him it was fine. Paid 71 dollars for my party of 4. the guy who gave us the skates made faces at all of us. The rudest anyone has ever been to me in the silver spring plaza, he made a face when he looked at my cousin and we assumed it was bc of his appearance and it left such a sour taste. the skating was a blast and worth it but when it was time to leave we came back to rerun the skates and again he stared us all down and made such rude faces at all of us. Sort of this superiority feeling. I would not recommend this skating ring, there are plenty more near by. read more

Horrible, dont waste your time. It's incredibly crowded to the point where you will wait in line for well over 30 minutes even though you are required to reserve your tickets a head of time. There is absolutely no room to even skate. Its so unsafe. There are tons and tons of families with little kids and you can hardly see the ice! Not safe at all. read more

I can finally check 1) outdoor ice skating and 2) ice skating at the downtown Silver Spring rink off my bucket list. It's a nice alternative for something to do in DTSS but it's probably not the best choice to do on a Friday evening - there's lots of kids skating in every which direction, and with high traffic, the ice gets torn up pretty quickly. If there are any general rules for the rink, they're 1) not well advertised and 2) not enforced. There was one "skating assistant", identified with a red jacket, that was skating around on the ice to help pick people up when they fell down. I was actually surprised that the Zamboni came out every hour, because with all the tracks in the ice, it's hard to tell that it gets smoothed out at all. If you're a skating novice, there are cute penguin walkers that you can use - if you can get your hands on one. They're first come, first serve, and people like to cling onto them for dear life for as long as they can. They're a hot commodity, and there are actually signs posted that say no refunds will be issued due to lack of penguins (lol). The place employs mostly college and high school kids. Prices are fair - $13 total for one person ($9 admission + $4 skate rental). They give you a sticker to track that you paid and the approximate time you got there. You get to skate for two hours, which was more than enough time for us... when your ice skating skill level is simply trying not to fall without holding onto anything, you can only skate in circles on a tiny rink with little kids so many times. When you rent your skates, you trade in your shoes. Also, they didn't honor the yelp check-in deal (free hat or gloves) the evening we went. But they have colorful lights and music playing for an overall, A-OK experience. read more

We had a nice time skating at Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink. Since social distancing rules were in effect, our visit was pretty easy breezy because there were not a whole bunch of people on the ice. I guess the rink does crowd control through its reservation system. Unfortunately, the ice was really slippery during our visit so skating was a bit difficult. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that ice is supposed to be slippery, but it felt like the ice was too hard so we had to skate very cautiously. However, you kinda get used to it (I think) after a few laps around the rink or falling down a few times. read more

We had a great time skating here between Christmas and New Years. We went during the afternoon and it was very crowded, but we didn't have any trouble getting around the rink. The ice does get pretty chopped up, but it was okay for us since we are beginners. The staff was very friendly and the Manager helped us when we checked in and sought us out later to see if we were having a good time. We will definitely come back! read more

If you have a child that is just learning how to skate, they can use a cute penguin bucket to hold onto while they skate. There is free two hour parking in the immediate area. There is also metered street parking and garages nearby. You will have smaller crowds on a weekday. It is fun watching the kids skate. read more

What a fun place! I decided to come here with my BFF since neither of us have been ice skating since we were 10 (so, about 23 years), and I've never been to an outdoor rink. Basically we had completely forgotten how to skate and looked like a bunch of toddlers on the ice. However, they have these little penguin things for kids to lean on so you don't fall. Naturally, I grabbed one for my first couple of laps around the rink. I have no shame. It's a small rink, and obviously lots of kids are around, which to me is a major con, but as long as they don't grab onto me or try to pull me down with them, I can deal with it. They play some decent pop jams, albeit a bit inappropriate for kids ("Do what you want with my body" isn't what I'd pick to DJ a kid-friendly activity). All was well until some mystery person started bleeding on the ice, and the ambulance had to be called. Although, that means four attractive EMT guys arrived. One of the teenaged employees cleaned up the bloody ice with a shovel...and then carelessly waved it around right in front of us on the way to dump it over the side of the rink onto the sidewalk. I'm no medical expert, but it seems like a pretty careless (and GROSS) way to dispose of bodily fluids to me. All in all, we had a fun hour reliving our youth. The only thing that would've made it better is getting rid of the kids and adding alcohol! read more

This ice skating rink is well put together. Super friendly and helpful staff. Reasonable prices and a great atmosphere. My nieces and nephew had a ball here. They fell many times and no one skating at the rink seemed to mind. There were a lot of first time skaters there and the rink provided little penguins for the kids to hold on to. Took my Daughter to this rink for the first time. I didn't even know the rink was there until she begged me to take her skating. I haven't skated in 8 years and it was her 2nd time skating and she did pretty well. It was a Saturday night and yes it was crowded. However, the flow was good. A lot of young kids, some couples and a lot of smiles. It's not a rink that I would go to all the time, but it was a nice rink to spend time with my daughter and socialize with the other patrons. It's a great rink for beginners and non-aggressive skaters. Good atmosphere, good music and good family fun. I would recommend this rink to anyone that fits in the criteria above! read more

The only reason this rink gets 2 stars (not 1) is for convenience and hours. Otherwise it's 1 star. The staff responsible for the rink itself spend most of their time socializing with friends. Kids and adults with or without penguins are going in every direction and make this rink a hazard for most. Others outside the rink throw things onto the rink to trip up their friends and should be asked to leave but nothing happens. I won't be back. Protect yourself and go to Wheaton or Cabin John. read more

Went over to the Silver Spring Ice Rink on the new Veterans Plaza for the first time this week, and had a great time. My friend and I were able to rent skates and skate for 2 hours for $11 (admission was $8 and rental was $3), which seems reasonable. The ice was very uncrowded which I loved, and even though it isn't the largest rink in the area it's a nice locale outdoors in the middle of Downtown Silver Spring. All in all a fun time and I'll definitely be back. read more

Went there skating for the first time with couple of my friends and i have to say, that was the most fun i had in a long time. The atmosphere is just great with friendly staff and people all around. The place is great not only to skate but also to relax, its open on all sides for a great view to enjoy while skating, and is spot in the middle of a shopping center so there are still awesome stuff one can do after leaving there. read more

This is an outdoor seasonal ice rink in our neighborhood. It's small, but kids love the penguin skate mates.

Husband, daughter and granddaughter went ice skating recently at Veterans Plaza. I tagged along to take pictures and eat and shop with them afterwards. We got their tickets and it was very reasonable, $8 for adults, $7 for children for a 2 hour skate, the fee included skate rental. When daughter asked how they monitored the time limit the clerk just shrugged, but it didn't matter because we knew our group wouldn't last that long anyway. The rink was busy, but not too crowded and it seemed like most skaters were pretty amateur with lots of families with kids on the ice. They have large plastic buckets scattered around to help give the kids something other than the rails to hang on to. There was music playing on the loud speakers and everyone was having a lot of fun. And as expected after about half an hour our party was tired and one was bruised (ouch!) so they turned in their skates and it was off to lunch. read more

This was a very small rink, and they had no problems overloading it, and then blocking off sections for lessons. Have to agree with the other posters about the horrendous staff of this location. The rink was full of unattended children skating the wrong way and people on cellphones with the staff sitting by either not visible or talking to each other. Not to mention that the rink is not properly maintained more water and slush than ice. There's plenty of outdoor skating in the area so find another spot. read more

I love the staff here. Super friendly. The rink is covered so it doesn't make a difference if it's raining or snowing and to top it off on Fridays they have the rink open until midnight. During the week it's not crowded at all. read more

This is a fantastic skating rink and experience. It's always open, the atmosphere is great, and the people have so much fun. There are many beginners and very few of the hot-shot, run-'em-down skaters that you find in many indoor rinks. People have a fun, welcoming attitude toward skating. It's also probably the most diverse skating rink in the country -- you get all kinds of races, ages, languages, and abilities. We love it! read more

Primarily a rink to take small kids if shopping in SIlver Spring. Something similar to DC's Sculpture Garden rink. It's size is similar to a studio rink, definitely NOT either a NHL or Olympic rink. Still, it serves this niche adequately. read more

Another "family" activity priced to keep lower income bracket out. 11$ admission/rental for adults, 10 for kids (3 dollars cheaper if you bring your own skates).
