As a result of the pandemic, I have been spending more time at home. The sound of running water and being in nature has always been a great comfort. Additionally, I find gardening therapeutic and a powerful exercise in hope. For these reasons, I decided to create a patio pond for my apartment balcony (12 ft x 6 ft). Prior to finding Tropic Bay Water Gardens, I purchased the patio pond, fountain, pond detoxifier, and maintenance tabs online. I imagine that you can find these items or substitutes in their fully stocked store. Lucas was extremely helpful in helping me select beautiful plants from their extensive collection. He was kind, patient, and knowledgeable about the plants. Additionally, he graciously provided a water lily that was not yet potted along with magical water clover. These plants were all purchased from Tropic Bay: water clover, water hyacinth, taro plant, rain lily, and a marginal plant with yellow flowers (not sure what it is). In addition to creating beauty and naturalizing the pond, they provide natural water filtration and oxygen to the fish. Lucas also helped me select 2 adorable Shubunkins! The fish are thriving in their new home. As with the plants, Lucas was very patient and helpful, showing me many different fish. The Apricot comets they have are stunning! Tropic Bay is an enchanting place to visit with hundreds of exquisite and well cared for fancy goldfish (Shubunkins, fantails, comets) and koi of various sizes and colors (butterfly, etc). The local pet stores cannot compare nor compete with the stunning selection offered here. I recommend a visit to tour the grounds (so many birds!) and all the beautiful fish. I promise you that you will want a koi pond/water feature of your own. The owner, Steve, is as colorful as his fish and is clearly passionate about what he does! He has invested a lot of time selecting fish and helping support others build their private oasis. He enjoys getting to know his customers and understanding their vision for their pond, whether a 27 gallon patio pond or stunning backyard water feature. I found him to be approachable, kind, and funny! Great store! The selection of products for your pond is enormous. The owner was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. I purchased a new filtration system and he helped me take everything out of the boxes to inspect the product and ensure all connections and adapters would fit before purchasing. The first filter we inspected was defective and he returned it and grabbed another when he noticed the issue. Due to recent inflation he gave me a good portion of the tubing I purchased to me free of charge. He was also very knowledgeable. My pond is cleaner and healthier than it has ever been! One star is too much for this store. The owner was rude and condescending simply because I was not knowledgeable about ponds and asked him for help in identifying a suitable product. After placing my order for some tubing with the owner, he left us standing for 10 minutes. When he returned, he called out to me "sorry, I had an emergency". Turns out that the emergency was waiting on a buddy and getting him a fish while he left me waiting. I was so annoyed I cancelled my tubing order. I was glad that I did -- when I got home and did an internet search I learned that the tubing he was going to charge me $3.75/foot was available for less than $1.00/foot. I did purchase a UV bulb -- he charged me $48. When I got home and looked online, I found that the very same UV bulb is readily available through Amazon and multiple online sources for $9.99. Normally I prefer to support local businesses, but I recommend you avoid this one, unless you enjoy being treated badly and being ripped off. read more

The previous owner of our house apparently used this company to service the extensive three tiered pond in the backyard. We called a few weeks ago and the owner acted like he had no idea if they had serviced the pond before. When I described the pond, he said "that definitely sounds like a 2 person job, will probably take 4-5 hours at $90/hour". They were supposed to come at 11AM today, but only one person (Rob) didn't show up until 11:35 AM. I called Tropic Bay and the owner answered and told me "just relax, stop freaking out, he'll be there." Rob was nice enough but said he wasn't told that the pond was so extensive. He was a nice guy but was working really, really slowly. I asked him how much he thought it was going to cost and he said "probably at least $1500 just for the cleaning, then another few hundred to up to $1500 to get the pump working." I talked with my husband and we decided to just pay him for the time he'd been there and research other options. I felt bad for Rob but his boss isn't up front and has no customer service skills. Rob did stay a little longer and told us how to get started cleaning it ourselves and explained how everything was supposed to work. He needs a better boss who actually has customer service skills and schedules his employees appropriately. I wouldn't use this company while the current owner/manager is still there. He's a condescending moron who has no idea how to treat customers. read more

Overpriced, obnoxious owner, and failure to wear masks during COVID pandemic. Regardless of anyone's personnel opinion of this ongoing health crisis, masks are MANDATED BY MARYLAND LAW for businesses to be open! The two younger employees wore masks, although one just kept his on his chin with mouth and nose uncovered. EVERY customer wore a mask, properly, and the owner not only didn't do so, but he didn't even try to fake it by having a mask on his chin or around his neck. NOTHING AT ALL to protect himself, his employees, and customers. Prices are at least $10 more for products I can purchase online. We bought some koi from here and all but one died within one week and unfortunately they also infected our other koi that we'd had for 7 years; big beautiful koi! When we called the owner said that they only guarantee fish for 3 days. There was nothing wrong with our other koi until we added the koi from Tropic Bay Water Gardens.
