I order through door dash I got chicken wings jerk chicken coco bread and beef patties ... everything in my order was good with the exception of my beef patty it was burnt and I was kinda upset about that since that's my favorite course of the meal. The wings were flavorful and hot and crispy. The jerk was a dry rub the rice and peas were really good along with the plantain... the cabbage was little on the vinegar side I think that is the taste they were ok but other than that plate was good!! read more

Hmm they had all the 'trappings' of a traditional JA restaurant, but...I think it was just 'ok'. Maybe an off day? Ordered jerk chx- which was dry and had sauce spooned on top and on the rice. I heard about this place from a friend at my old job, so after trying to find it unsuccessfully once before, I decided give it another go. Using Google maps, I found it easier this time, so here we go ..... I'm going to apply my standardized rating system to this review. Establishment: earned - The restaurant outsides look clean and entry into the place is easy. The dining room looked clean and so did the buffet area & counters. We didn't try the seats and table, since we ordered to go, but the people sitting looked relatively comfortable. Waitstaff/Counter person : earned - The woman who took and built our order was pleasant and chatted with us a bit. We asked about the menu offerings and she was able to explain them. All in all, very hospitable and nice. Service: earned - the food came out and was bagged up quickly since most of the items are already cooked and not made to order. Food/Drinks: 1/2 star earned - I wanted to really love this food. I'm very experienced with eating Jamaica/Caribbean food from over 30 years of living I'm NYC. I would described this as Jamaica food tweaked down in taste, for the more delicate pallets of Katy. We ordered the oxtails and jeark chicken. Both tasted rich and savory, but lacked the essential hallmark spices a native would expect. The generous portion of rice and beans were also tasty, but a bit bland on the taste buds, it even had a refrigeration aftertaste (that made me sad). The sauce from the oxtails could have assisted, but it again ...tasted spiceless as well. We also ordered two beef patties. They were out of coco bread, so we just had them plain. They tasted pretty standard and my son enjoyed the majority of it. Food/Drinks: not earned - Again, we really wanted to love the food, and while everything WAS edible the piece of plastic my son almost swallowed while eating the chicken, sadly was not. He pulled it out of his mouth and asked me what it was, I almost dismissed him and excused it away as a piece of red pepper, but it turns out to be plastic from some sort of bottle (that's my guess anyway). Needless to say no star was earned in this graded area. My opinion is, this seems like a cool little small business, and a nice place to have a low key dine in or take out meal. I hear great things about the buffet, so since I'm local, I'll have to come back and give that a try. Now that I know what to expect taste wise. My tip, add more spice and be more careful with plastic around the food, and we're in good shape. read more

I got the brown stew chicken and a plate of oxtails. This was the worst place I've ever been to. A waste of money, the rice had no flavor whatsoever just tasted like it was cooked in coconut milk and kinda lumped together. The oxtails had no flavor just brown sauce but no real taste. The brown stew chicken was horrendous. The chicken itself had no flavor either. I apologize for sounding so harsh but I wish someone was truthful during these review. Even the plantains were soggy and tasted like they needed to be cooked more. I had high expectations from this place but left disappointed. I couldn't even finish the food and had to throw both plates away with 3/4 remaining. Waste of $40 I wish I could get a refund. I have been eating Jamaican food all my life and I never received a brown stew chicken without herbs & spices "thyme, onion,tomatoes, and bell peppers. The best stews include veggies like potatoes and carrots. I received chicken and this brown gravy that like browned soup. My rice and peas was like sticky rice with no taste of salt or coconut milk. The baked mac and cheese was made with kraft noodles and cheese. I spent 20$ first and last time. I am just going cook myself instead of being lazy. read more

I've been coming to this location for years. The food is okay, but it's the closest Caribbean restaurant so I tend to come here when I need my fix. The customer service has always been subpar. The new young lady who works in the back has a bad attitude and shouldn't work there to be honest. The last order of oxtails they tried to stretch the oxtails by adding in stewed pork thinking no one would know, but my family recognized it and this had happened before. The first time we thought it was a mistake, but the third time this has to be common practice. Today my wife placed a phone order we arrive, let them know I'm here. 10 minutes pass they ask what did I order I tell them. They come back 10 minutes later ask me again, and then proceed to tell me that I didn't place the right order. Finally, they tell me that I would have to wait another 30 minutes at least for my food after waiting a total of 35 minutes already. I left and will never eat there again. I might just buy the place tbh. read more

Omg this place is fantastic! We were welcomed in by Danial the cook who asked if this was our first time in. He then recommend that we should try the 4 meat combo. We tried the jerked chicken, curry chicken, ox tail and goat. It was served with a bowl of rice and beans way more food than 2 people can eat. Everything was delicious and the portions were very generous., great spice without being to over powering. Will be going back for more. It comes with either peas and rice or white rice. Im always good either way. They also had jerk chicken, stew chicken, curry goat (one of my favorite foods of all time) and many more. I arrived to the Tropical Diner about 12:50pm and put in for an order of the large oxtails with rice and peas and vegetables. I was told that the oxtails wouldn't be ready for another hour. To say I was pissed was an understatement. I decided to order a patty and coco bread since I was already there and hungry. The patty was nothing but breading and left a lot to be desired. Really wanted to like and try this place since it's so close to home. It is quite unprofessional to have one of your most popular dishes not ready by the time you open. My family is from Belize, so we are in tune with your average jerk chicken, stew chicken, curry chicken, oxtail... Rice and beans plantains, the whole shebang.. BUT unfortunately, I got a bad batch of rice. My rice wasn't cooked, really crunchy. I don't mind a crunch or two in my rice.. But not the whole thing. We bought three plates of stew chicken and rice and beans, it was good.. Don't get me wrong there's flavor. But it was cold, needed some more spices and the rice wasn't fully cooked. I am not sure if it was because the time I came? But either way, the food should always be hot and fresh for your customers. They do a good job with their decor, looks like your average Caribbean spot. Being that there ARE a lot of belizeans in Katy, and Caribbean people in general.. I've been going to this place for several years now. It's consistently delicious. I usually get two large curry plates and a side of Jerk Pork most of the time and that runs me exactly $30. 2 LG plates feeds my family of 4 with plenty of left overs. There's meat, Peas n' Rice, and smoothed Cabbage on the plate. You can get a side of any other meat of your choice if you have a favorite but want to try something else. The oxtail is one of my husbands favorites. Nice and clean on the inside. If you dine in they serve the food on nice dishes and the tables are decorated like you are sitting in there own home. Friendly family like atmosphere. The only concern is have is the meat pies aren't up to par. Everything else is mouthwatering delicious. read more

I think the other reviews set my expectations too high for this place. I came in for dinner on a Thu night with my daughter. I had the Jerk Chicken plate which came with the "peas and rice" side (red beans & rice) plus greens. Peas and rice was good - fluffly texture and right amount of salt but it could have used more flavor. The greens were similar to what you get a soul food places. The jerk chicken was definitely pretty good with very healthy portions, legs & thighs, maybe a breast. Flavor was excellent but I found myself wondering if maybe I should have gotten the curry chicken or other specialty items. I'll definitely be back here but without the daugther (4 yrs old) who just didn't like Jamaican food.
