I was craving a nighttime meal outside of the typical fast food when I came across this restaurant. The neighborhood was a bit sketchy, the place was looked more like a dive, and the parking was horrific. Nevertheless, hunger got the best of me and I went in. Thank heaven I did. The man behind the counter was extremely busy, yet stopped to greet my family as we walked in. Because it was so late, the menu was limited. We settled on griot, legume, black rice, and tasso. The food rice was aromatic and tasty. My pickiest eater enjoyed it so much, we returned two days later to try more items on the menu. The restaurant did not disappoint us. I use to come to tropical almost everyday when I lived in Boynton, right before I moved something change with the food, it went from being really good to really really bad "NASTY" I moved a couple exits south so I stopped coming. But I seen they got a new building and thought maybe it would be better. Well I was wrong, the food was terrible. I mean just a complete mess!!!!!!!! Pickli was so nasty with a whole bunch of vinegar, the rice nasty, max and cheese nasty, meat nasty plantains nasty nasty nasty nasty. I never try to make reviews but today was enough for me. After seeing reviews for Haitian food in my area, I decided to order pick up from this location. I ordered the full-size legume served with white rice and red kidney beans sauce. The legume was so delicious. Although I thought the size was a bit small, the flavor was amazing. The legume was not greasy, was the right level of spicy and was filled with both crab and stew meat. There was a considerable amount of rice for the amount of legume that was served but I was pleasantly surprised and would 10/10 order again. Like the look of this restaurant it was clean but there were flies. Ordered lemonade it was very sweet and totally artificial red bean rice lacked flavor the sauce did help. Fried turkey was a little undercooked chewy and lacked seasoning . The plantains were good. But won't drive that far again for this restaurant. The workers very nice . So good, definitely recommend you try the jerk chicken. I got the griot and it comes with salad, rice & beans, a spicy slaw condiment, and a sauce. Though the atmosphere very fast paced in and out Togo with the option to sit down, you go there for the food: a hearty blend of Caribbean Haitian French influence with just the right amount of spice. Don't be turn off by the size of the place, the food is authentic, fresh, homemade and if you are into Cuban or Creole cuisine, this place is right for your taste buds! I arrived at the Best Caribbean joint!!! It's a tiny place, just as I walked in I was greeted as warmly as if we were arriving at a family dinner, Jean Morisset the owner cheerfully engaged me and my wife in conversation, expertly explained the menu choices, and gave us a little history of the restaurant and the family nature of its operation. The happy beginnings were accentuated by the wonderful and delicious food ... which is cooked on order,not pre-prepared, so expect to 5 to 10min wait, but everything is well worth that very minor delay . We shared a plate of Creole Spinach(Lalo) as an appetiser, for which the word "delicious" is simply inadequate ... lightly spiced and tasty, in a sauce that could have been served as a dish in its own right. For mains we chose the Curry Chicken and a creole Red Snapper, West Indies Style, both of which were a delight to the palate. Each main came with two sides, so we chose the Rice and Peas(two orders), the Cabbage (spicy), and the Fried Plantains, all of which were great accompaniments to the main courses. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the convivial manner of our hostess and that of the excellent chef who came out to speak with us as well. This place is pure magic! It's right around the corner from my house and has become one of my goto food spots. I've never had a bad experience here. Some of our favorites here are: Tassot (fried goat) which is served with a massive portion of rice and 4 tostones as well as a salad and pickliz (hot pickled cabbage, a Caribbean kimchi of sorts). It's worth noting here that there are several choices of rice. I generally alternate between the djon djon rice (rice and green peas cooked in a mushroom gravy) and the yellow rice with pigeon peas. Griot (fried pork) served with rice, two tostones, a salad and pickliz Dinde (turkey) stew served with the asides that accompany griot minus the pickliz. There's also this Haitian milkshake in a variety of flavors. I've only had the guava one but it was fantastic. If the food weren't so heavy id eat here every day. They best thing is the price. I always get the larger portion which is usually 8 dollars. The tassot is more but it's enough food for 2-3 people. They 8 dollar meal can feed 2 people or 1 extremely gluttonous person (me). Took a couple weeks off from Tropical Island to check out some other spots in town, went back last night and it was as amazing as ever. Tropical Island is STILL fantastic read more

Got dinner from here last night. Wow! Whole fried Red Snapper withspicy onions, jerk chicken, stewed greens. We loved everything but I have to talk about the bean and rice side dish. This is ubiquitous at island restaurants and is usually tasteless. Not here, moist,tender and flavorful. No surprise that everything else was delicious.
