I ordered food for pickup. The wait time for my food was 45 mins which is really long but I'm hoping it's because it's made extra fresh! I ordered jerk wings which was pretty good. It was def different from Jamaican style jerk chickez we n because it wasn't grilled. I would have enjoyed it better if it had been grilled. It was flavorful with a slight kick. The oxtail was juicy and tender. The gravy was a lot more watery than I'm used to but it was still pretty decent. My meal was suppose to come with plaintain but instead I got carrots and celery. That was a big disappointment. The ambiance feels like a Caribbean restaurant. The music was lively and I'm aware that there's also a club in the back of the restaurant which is pretty cool. I wouldn't say I wouldn't give this a try again but I'll also be I search of more restaurants like this to come it to. read more

So this was my first time here. I chose this spot randomly because they had calamari which i love and I was visiting the Schenectady area. Anyway, I treated my dad & his fiance to lunch. We came after the carnival. My dad & his fiance were the only ones who liked their food. I did not like mine or my drink. The service was OK. If I could Leave zero stars I would. I ordered the oxtail and white rice. It was a bowl filled with rice & 3 pieces of oxtail. The rice was under cooked. The oxtail had no flavor. The gravy was just spicy. I was so disappointed in the food that I fed it to my dogs. read more

I was really hoping Yelp had a 0 Star review option. Tropics is by far the worst night club i been to in New York. I went twice and will never go back. My first-time attending was with a few friends for a normal night out, we entered, they checked our ID and give us a wrist band. An hour had gone by, and my friend had to use the bathroom, the bathroom at tropic is beyond filthy so he had to go home to use his bathroom which was a block away. When he returned to re-enter, he was forced to pay a re-entry fee. Never in my life have I ever heard of a re-enter fee at any clubs. This is really a sad attempt of extortion and is totally unacceptable. My second time at Tropic was for a concert, I really should have learned from the first time. We had bought some tickets ahead of time, but we still needed to buy an extra one for someone who decided to attend last minute. We had called to find out how much the ticket will be at the door and was told it will be $50. Once we got the door to purchase the ticket the bouncer told us the ticket will be $150! We had to remind him that we called ahead of time and was told it will only be $50, then he said, "oh yeah, its $50". After we got into the venue, it was over packed! I believe it was not up to the city code, we had to stand for over an hour before we could get a server and drinks. They were very much understaffed and who ever was even working at the time seems like they did not want to be there. Oh, and I have to re-mention, one of my friend had stepped out to get something from his car was asked again to pay a re-entry Fee! Tropics is not a place you would want to go or take anyone to. Please do not waste your time and money there, I really suggest you spend your money elsewhere. Let me not get started on the food. Overpriced and tasteless! Big portion sizes and tasty food. It was really hard to decide what to get. I got the oxtail with yellow rice and plantains. The pepper sauce was super yummy and a nice addition to the yuca fries. They kept on turning on and off the lights. I heard this place turns into a club. The drinks were decent and so was the customer service. read more

It's a hit or miss with this restaurant. One week their food is good the next day it isn't. The consistency is off. Another thing is that it's over price. It arrived about 90 minutes after the order was placed, which in and of itself wasn't a huge deal, however, I ordered Brown Stew Chicken and was delivered Jerk Chicken. Upon calling the restaurant to rectify the error, I was told that this "Caribbean" restaurant couldn't have sent Jerk Chicken to my house, as they didn't make any that day. VERY hard to believe a Caribbean restaurant didn't make ANY Jerk Chicken that day, but ok, whatever. I end up having to bring my food there to show them that, yes, they DID deliver the incorrect dish to me. I am African American black women who went to Tropics Restaurant & Bar in Schenectady New York to get some food because their food is good. This is a Guyanese restaurant that serves Guyanese food. They had me siting there for over an hour or more while other Guyanese people were coming into the restaurant ordering food waiting about 15 to 20 minutes for there food and leaving. They showed me blatant disrespect because I was a black women and the only black person in their establishment and because I was not of their nationality. They made me wait and when I did asked when would the food would be ready the person at the counter kept saying wait, wait she said this to me a few times when I asked about my order. After a 1 1/2 hour of waiting I decided I was not going to wait anymore so I went up to the counter and asked for my $30.00 back and it seemed as though they were waiting for me to ask, because they did not hesitate to give it back to me. They made me feel like I was not wanted in their place of business and they made sure I would not be going back their again. I know their is discrimination in the world but I never thought that I would be the subjected to that discrimination in that way. They let me know that racism is alive and well. Just when you think the world is taking a step in the right direction in coming together someone always comes along and reminds you that we still have a long way to go. This is definitely something different in Schenectady. Cuisine of the city's diverse Guyanese, Jamaican and Spanish Cultures. I've lived in this town 33 years. They make a kick ass Mohito, can compete with the best of Miami. But if you want something more New York, they make a Manhatten. But its a full service bar with a generous pour. Tried the Jamaca Jerk Chicken, its hot, its good served on a bed of Lo Mien. Prices are reasonable. Portions are generous. The owners daughter was the bar tender. Gather the place is jumping on Friday nights with current top 40 DJ, and Saturday with Latin nights. The facility is basic, was an Auto Parts store in its last life. But definitely has the feel of Little Cuba. I will be back. read more

Hubby and I recently learned that there is a Guyanese community in Schenectady NY; being hubby's homeland (Guyana) we decided to take a trip in hopes of finding foods that he longed for. The first place we stopped is Tropics for lunch, a Guyanese friend is related to the owner. There was a sign on the front door stating that they're open, but please use the rear entrance, which happens to be a nightclub that's attached to the restaurant. We entered to a vacant room, but could see a couple of people in what appeared to be an office through a window. It was obvious that they could see us as well, yet it took approximately 10 mins before anyone attended to us. Once greeted we were told that there's "a function" going on it the restaurant portion and asked if we'd mind having our lunch at one of the tables in the nightclub, not a big deal so we went along with it. There was energetic reggae music playing softly in the background, and a large bar, but neither of us were up for having a cocktail at that time of day. We were given menus and asked if we needed any explanation of the items, being familiar with the native foods we declined. We placed our order for Curry Goat with Dahl Puri and Sweet Plantains, and Jerk Chicken with Chow Mein, and patiently waited another 20 to 30 mins for our food. Granted they were preparing for the function up front so we dismissed the slow service. The Goat was very tender, and nicely trimmed of excess fat that goat is well known to have, the curry sauce was delicious and nicely spiked with just a tad of hot chiles. The Dahl Puri didn't have much Dahl and appeared to have been made previously and warmed up to serve, for it had a crispy texture that I'm only familiar with when it's not freshly made. It was good, but yet just a tad disappointing. The Sweet Plantains were fried until caramelized and lightly salted. Yum! Hubby's Jerk Chicken had a pleasant taste and aroma of the Jamaican spices it's known for (allspice, thyme, chiles). Although the Chow Mein was good it was quite bland. The serving sizes were quite large, and we ended up only eating about a third of our meals before being pleasantly full. Leftovers made a pleasant lunch the next day. Our server was very kind and soft spoken, and was willing to recommend nearby businesses for groceries and such. All together, including tip was $37 which is phenomenal! In the Buffalo area we'd pay double that for two meals and get less food. Will we return? Most definitely! read more

Pretty nice, big bar area. We started with the sweet & sticky ribs which were just "okay." The ribs were sort of tough but the sauce was good. The birthday drink (goldfish bowl) was very weak and tasted like seltzer water. We must have waited an hour minimum for our entrees and luckily for them I'm incredibly patient. This restaurant is really huge and was completely empty on a Wednesday night. I ordered the large jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage, also a side of mac and cheese. When the order came out I'm really glad I looked at the receipt before I left as they gave me jerk pork instead of chicken. The mistake was fixed very quickly. When they handed me the bag it had to weigh 5 lbs, that's alot of food for 16$ and change. The rice was fantastic, just the way I like it, well cooked and very well seasoned, the cabbage was just ok, tender and well cooked but in need of a bit more seasoning, the chicken had amazing flavor and was incredibly juicy, my only complaint is I prefer a crispier skin on my chicken. Last but not least the mac n cheese was great, most places make it in mass quantity and the pasta always ends up super mushy which is not appealing to me at all, but the mac n cheese here had a decent amount of firmness to it and the flavor was very good. The rice was cold and the cabbage was suppose to be steamed Instead it was cold, very hard and tasteless. However the customer service was excellent. Recently, I visited Tropics and was immensely impressed with their Jamaican Chicken and Pork eggrolls. They were flavorful, crisp and filled vegetables that complemented the protein. The Chicken Jerk dinner came with generous portions and was perfectly seasoned. The chow noddles were a good foil to quell the spiciness of the dish. The Flan was good, not great. The buffet was a very good assortment of spicy and mild foods (oxtail, fried shrimp, fried rice, plantains, curried chicken dumplings) and the dessert banana bread with a coconut rum caramel was amazing!
