If you're looking for a guided fly fishing trip, THIS is the place. Sam Kinney was the most patient, knowledgeable and fun teacher we could have asked for. Not only did we catch trout ALL DAY with his guidance, he taught us a lot of techniques and coached us through the mistakes we made. It was the perfect trip for getting started with this hobby. The week of our trip there was a lot of rain that effected some of the fishing locations but Sam was very communicative about finding the best spot for the rainy circumstances. He gave us a few different options of where we could fish and we ultimately went with his recommendation which was fishing the rivers in Silverthorne. We got even more out of it than expected. My wife and I decided somewhat last minute to book a half day guided trip with the Trouts shop out of Frisco. We are new to fly fishing and had only had a couple hours of instruction prior to this trip. We did have most of our own gear, but I needed waders and boots. They have a very good rental fleet of waders (Simms G3) and boots, so you weren't wearing cheap gear, which was nice. We met up with our guide Ryan first thing in the morning at the shop and decided to fish the Blue just north of Silverthorne and in town. We had a blast with Ryan! We were looking for more of an educational trip, as well as hoping to get on some fish. Ryan was great in explaining how to read the river and present the fly in the best way as well as different knot methods which we didn't know before. He didn't get into super technical casting methods, it was more about getting the fly where you wanted it and then presenting it so hopefully the fish would take it. You could tell Ryan was super passionate about fishing and helping people out. We had a blast. The best part of the day was that my wife caught her first fish ever and now she is really "hooked". I can't thank Ryan and the other shop guys enough for a great day. read more

Staff member was not helpful at all. Demeaning character when asking a simple question about local fishing spots. The selection was very dull as well. Better off going to Cuttthroat Anglers in Silverthorne, a much better shop with friendly staff. read more

They don't sell fishing licenses anymore. Limited selection for anything related to fly fishing. Why have business hours if you aren't going to stay open for them? Apparently they just close whenever they want regardless of posted hours online. read more

Walked in store to ask for help selecting what to fly fish with in the area. Staff helped me pick out flies and helped get my equipment rigged for fishing in the Frisco area. Outstanding service and lots of great advice. Even pointed out where I should go try fishing. Caught fish all morning thanks to the great staff at Trouts. read more

Do not go here. I called to find out if I could go to the store to buy a fishing license. Whoever answered the phone clearly did not want me to come to the store. He immediately told me I can buy a fishing license online. I said "I'm in Frisco right now if I actually wanted to come into your store where would I go?" He then told me it's also "on the website". Apparently he was way too busy to even think about helping me. read more

He also had virtually no knowledge of the shop's gear, or of the local area. Maybe he's not from around here, and I'm sure he's sick of dealing with tourists, but come on. Booked an all day float trip as my 11 year old wanted to learn how to fish and I didn't want to miss an opportunity to spend the day with him "device free." We could not have asked for a better experience (though we would have liked to have caught more fish). Our guide/instructor Tim was amazingly patient with us both and just an all around great guy. It was all in the little things -- from calling me a few days before to talk logistics, having every piece of gear we could have needed, the perfectly prepared no frills sandwiches made on the boat, and just a sense of calm no doubt perfected over years of experience. Great little shop, don't be fooled by its little size. The customer service is outstanding, and they have great advice on where to go fish and what flies to use. There isn't much equipment to buy here, but if you're looking for flies, leaders, tippet, etc this is the place. read more

I have had only great experiences with Trouts in Frisco. I am a senior woman who had "never, ever" fished. I signed up for a free Fishing 101 class and had the good fortune of meeting guide Ryan Wooten. His enthusiasm for fly fishing is infectious and I caught the bug. After a couple of weeks of practicing knot tying at home, I signed up for a half-day guided trip on the river with Ryan. We went to the Blue River in Breckenridge on July 15 and I had more fun than I could have imagined. I have taken lots of float trips on lots of rivers, but never had such an incredible day as I did with my guide Ian. Got to sight cast most of the day into browns and rainbows- caught at least 50! Never would have gotten to those spots without my guide. I am pretty sure he got a workout I couldn't have handled. The entire day included dries, streamers, with the occasional nymphs. Can't wait until this summer, planning on an overnight that will include mousing. Still freaks me out there are fish big enough to eat a mouse! Tight Lines read more

I went into Trouts fly fishing store to get my fishing license, some flies, to get some advice on local streams and to check them out for a potential guide trip. The guy that was there was not at all helpful and also gave inaccurate, bad information about fish biology (info we are knowledgeable about), was so negative, and yet wanted to come across as a "know it all" . He had not even been on the local steams and he could not find on the state web site how to get our fishing licenses. I walked out without buying the flies I had intended to buy and went to Walmart where they had no trouble at all selling us our licenses. I will not be going back there and definitely will not be going out on any guided trips from there! read more
