My teenage son and I had a terrific experience on a 3-hour fishing excursion with Big Ed''s. Our guide, Kyle, was outstanding: engaging, informative, highly knowledgeable about fishing and the lake, kind and patient. Although we didn't catch as much as we hoped, Kyle made this a truly memorable experience for the two of us. When your gamer son says "I know we only caught three fish, but this was a great time!" you know it was a success! We made reservations only a couple days prior by calling their office line. Nicole quickly made the reservation and provided all of the basic info needed to prepare for the trip. Within minutes I had a text with trip details: where to meet, when, tips on what to wear and how to get a fishing license. A very good and efficient reservation experience. We fished on a partially covered pontoon. This was my first experience trolling. Such a different experience from fly fishing. I loved our two fly fishing experiences; I found it to be highly meditative. But this was equally enjoyable. Riding around the lake, seeing different views of the beautiful scenery was quite enjoyable. We encountered some inclement weather, but that didn't deter Kyle. He brought us back to the dock where we fished for char. My son caught a rather large one! And we got to watch a heavy rain pass distant mountains, a beautiful site. The clouds passed and Kyle had us back on the lake where I caught a trout. All in all a wonderful afternoon down with my son and Kyle. We'll be back again! read more

My husband and I booked a summer fly fishing excursion. Our guide was Joe and he was really awesome!! We spent time on learning to cast before we even got in the water which was super helpful and helped the intimidation factor. We spent a ton of time actually fishing and got such great instruction, the time flew! This one such an experience! Big Ed's came highly recommended and lived up to our expectations! We were picked up from our hotel so we didn't have to drive ourselves. Then we were taken to the lake where we met with our amazing guide. Such a patient and great person. He took us down to the lake where he had 3 fishing poles set up for us, a tent and heater in case we got cold, and chairs. He set up 1 automatic and 3 regular fishing poles for us. He gave us a very detailed overview on how everything worked and stayed close by in case we caught any trout, which we caught 3! We could have kept them but we decided to release them. He would drill new holes every few minutes and let us move around to different ones when we didn't have any movement going on. We were also allowed to take snacks and alcohol. This was a great time! I booked it on a whim just to get out of the house and do something differennt. We got lucky and had a perfect winter day that was super sunny. There was no need for the warming huts so we got plenty of sun and fresh air. Our guide Kyle was very chill and patient while teaching us, but also clearly passionate about fishing. In the 3 hours we caught 8 or 9 fish. Kyle would have cleaned them if we wanted, but we chose to throw them back. We were a bit late because of traffic but Kyle stayed a little extra so we could enjoy some more time on the lake. He also taught us how to drill our own holes in the ice so we could pick out new spots to fish. They have all the special gear, bait, etc. which makes it super easy and so fun! read more

Went with my family early June and they loved it. Got a sunset cruise on the lake and caught some nice browns, rainbows, and salmon. Had so much fun went again this week with friends from college! For my brother's bachelor party we wanted to try snowboarding and ice fishing for the first time. We were skeptical at the idea of fishing in the cold but this experience was one of the best parts of our trip! Andrew is probably the best guide that one can ask for. He took care of everything from equipment, to training, making sure we're comfortable and was a cool guy to hang out and have a good time with. With Andrew's tips, we reeled in plenty to feed 6 grown men and couldn't be happier. My fiancé and I decided to go on this charter while visiting Breckenridge and it was absolutely terrific. We had Joe as a guide and I have to say he's the perfect guide for lake Dillon. He knows the whole lake and whole area very well. He was very easy to talk to and had amazing stories to tell while we were trolling. We got a hold of a few fish and had a great time. He showed us where the bald eagles were, and told us about all the happenings in and around lake Dillon. He was a great guide on a great fishing charter. Great morning of ice fishing today! We bought the trip on groupon at an extra discount. Well worth it for the first time doing ice fishing. George was our guide, we were booked in for the 9.30am tour and were instructed to meet at his house at 9.15am which was conveniently right next to the lake. Tip: when giving big ed's a contact number, use one that will have signal in Dillion - not a T-mobile number. George had tried to call me but I never got it. Not sure why he was calling but we were there on time after a coffee at the place right around the corner (see my review for the pour house) We pulled up at his house and he gave us a waiver form to fill out, told us that the car in front was filling out theirs too and that the lake is a street over, next thing you know he's getting in his car and driving away, so like good little people we just followed. When we arrived he told us that there was another two people already on the ice and that we would share the tent with them. It's 4 people to a tent and the other car that was in front of us had 4 people in it so they shared a tent. The tents were great, inside was 4 camping chairs and 4 ice holes maybe 8 inches round. He set us up, explained the technique and off we went. He was very knowledgeable and hands on, checked on us regularly and made sure we were all doing well. It was such a beautiful day that he drilled a few extra holes outside and we moved out to fish in the sun. We fished till about 12.30pm (3 hours, same as what we were told by the shop when we rang to book), he'd started packing up the things people weren't using prior to us finishing because there was no afternoon tour today. The fish were biting but not very active today. I caught a tiny one and so did a few other people. I asked George about the fish but he said that there's a million different reasons why they might not be active today. read more

Honestly - this is a blast! The thrill of walking on a frozen lake, surrounded by mountains and ice fishing from a hole was surprisingly a total hoot! We were three women unfamiliar with fishing and Andrew our guide was truly the best! We caught Rainbow trout and hooked a salmon too. They even clean the fish for you to take home and cook if you'd like. It was a very cool experience. read more

It was great fun for both the adults and the kids. There was a huge tent if you chose to fish within the tent. Helps keep you warm and cozy. However you can also fish outside the tent to enjoy the cool breeze and the wonderful scenery. Scott was very patient. He taught us how to bait and reel in the fish. He even talked and played with my 6 year old. He made sure everyone in our group had a chance to reel in a fish, especially the kids. They were so excited to hold the fish in their hands. We caught a total of 16 fishes with 1 salmon. We brought 5 home and had a delicious meal! Can't wait for our next trip. read more

I went ice fishing for the first time with my fiancee and friend (we are all in our low 30s), and had an awesome time! I've done a lot of fly fishing and bass fishing over the years and was a bit skeptical of ice fishing at first, but it is such a fun way to fish! Scott is super knowledgeable, and with his sonar system you can see the trout come in and check out your jig. We finished a half day trip in Steamboat catching around 16 rainbow trout (with 5 or so in the 16-18 inch range). Thanks again!! read more

I took my children ages 7 and 10 skiing at Copper. While googling other activities, I read about ice fishing and, on a complete whim, contacted Big Ed's. I'm so thrilled I took a risk and tried something new. We loved our experience. Scott was a terrific guide--my kids caught fish, learned how to drill in the ice, learned about ice fishing technology and spent an exhilarating afternoon outside working as a team in a whole new way. We caught 9 Rainbow Trout, threw back the first two and ultimately cooked the rest at home. We cannot recommend this highly enough. This is a great activity for families, including children who don't ordinarily like trying new things. Scott is patient, enthusiastic and an excellent instructor. We lucked out! read more

Okay, so I contacted Andrew a couple of weeks ago and told him I was on my way to Breckenridge again for some spring skiing and some more ice fishing. Andrew told me that he would be on travel, but John was now on the team. Coinicidentally, it was John who referred me to Big Ed's after a great afternoon at Broken Compass Brewery (another must go to place in Breckenridge, but only if you like great beer and a wonderful atmosphere!). I was looking forward to seeing John again, but he also brought Jake along, which made for an amazing day of fishing. I grew up ice fishing, but never experienced anything like this before. John and Jake had a tent set up, with great music playing, beers and soda on ice, a heater, comfy chairs, a variety of killer bait and everything you need for a successful fishing expedition. Most importantly, they are two great guys who made the day memorable for my family and my guests. John & Jake could not do enough to make our fishing day the best, to include making it possible for everyone in our party to catch a fish, which totalled in the double digits! I don't give many five star reviews, but these guys are the best!! read more

Our whole family enjoyed the time fishing on Lake Dillon and every staff member we met from Big Ed's. Since there were four of us we had a private charter and the boat was beyond nice and having all the equipment there and ready for us was superb. You absolutely can't beat the views and just cruising through the lake was relaxing. It wasn't a day of getting many bites and we only got three small rainbow trout while trolling. None casting (not any fault of our guide - just nature) - I liked that because it was so uneventful the guides and Andrew stayed with us a little longer passed our time and were able to catch two Arctic Char. We could tell they care for the fish and their guests - which meant a lot to us. We even got a lunch recommendation as we left. The only part I would improve is our guide (while extremely knowledgeable and friendly - even dealing with our toddler telling him all about her my little ponies) could have helped the newbies a bit more with the equipment and helped with some tips as we fished. You could tell he was an expert and maybe just doesn't realize some of us have no clue what we are doing! We would absolutely do this again and thank you all for the memories! read more

He put us on the fish and despite the outside temperature being in the single digits, it was quite cozy inside the heated hut. We caught some nice rainbows, kokanees, and even a few artic char. Very little tackle, short on gear, fish finder only worked half the time, no floor on ice shack so our 5 year old was cold sitting on a bucket, no knife for cleaning fish, expensive, not educational, limited places to fish. I took a tour. The guide was really good though I caught only two small fishes. In the end of the tour I couldnt pay by credit card, they had problem with the card reader app and they did not let me pay by cash. Finally the owner called me after 2 days with a totally unacceptable rood mode starting a conversation. He believed I wasnt willing to pay I tried to explain what happened and tell that I was ok with the service and I m going to pay. He was shouting at me in front of my family he said I m a thief. Which is totally not true the only reason why I didnt pay because they couldnt manage the payment. Finally I had to provide my 3 digits sec. code to my card to a stranger which never happened before, because bank transfer or other options wasnt acceptable for the owner. They took the money with a discount what I never asked for. So my suggestion DO THE RIGHT THING and choose another operator. :-( read more
