Lake Charleston in neighboring Lake Worth, is a master planned community consisting of over 945 acres of neighborhoods linked by a chain of over 220 acres of lakes. The Lake Charleston Park and Recreation center is next to Manatee Elementary School. The 9.5 acres and is open from sunrise until 10 PM. While the park itself is a public facility, it is closely associated with the Lake Charleston community. Parking is ample, free and shaded. The first playground is designed for smaller children and is designed as a sailboat. A small rock wall, pretend boat helm and two-tiered design appealed to both of my kids (1 and 3). A tiny 'hill' beyond this is the playground for older kids. There were a couple of cool features on the lower levels. Both playgrounds are connected by a sidewalk that continues on in a few different directions - around a lake and through tennis courts. Across from the sidewalks are large fields that I assume are used for soccer, due to the goals. My kids ran around in the mid-length grass/weeds trying to catch dragonflies. The field is very far from the road so it was nice for them to run around without needing to worry. We spotted different kinds of birds and a family of ducks far away. We did walk through the courts (2 tennis and 1 basketball, at least) to another part of a water body (Lake Charleston? No clue!). I was pretty nervous about alligators being that close to the water. We came to a tiny dock that was so covered in bird poop that it was uninhabitable. I didn't see any signs about alligators, but I don't think I'd walk my kids around that part again without a stroller. I'm not sure if it was just a windy day, but these are kind of 'waterfront' playgrounds and definitely received nice breezes. They were also shady with benches and altogether pleasant. Although not fenced, the far proximity from roads is nice and feels protected. The bathrooms are located outside but on the other side of the rec center (not near the playgrounds). They were remarkably nice and clean. We only encountered one other young child here briefly. Otherwise, when I arrived, the smaller playground was being used by a fitness class (for adults), and the larger one was being used by 3 teenagers.

I do wish they would mix up the class times once in a while because I've been going for about two years and schedule hasn't changed much so I end up doing the same classes each week. The instructor Jennifer is great. I love that she does different things each week so I don't get bored with it. The place is clean, large, good staff, nice pool. I like the E gym so you don't have to adjust weights as it remembers when you scan your bracelet. They have a lot of community/family based events.

1 Star -- Extremely Disappointed After 6 Years as YMCA Members…read more Unfortunately, after what happened today, we decided to cancel our YMCA membership and our children's swimming lessons. We have been YMCA members for six years. We have used this facility regularly, our children have taken swimming lessons here, and we have invested a lot of time and money into this membership. That is why today's experience was especially disappointing. I have already left a negative review about this YMCA, but today's situation honestly went beyond what I consider acceptable. This morning, I came to the YMCA for my workout. Around 11:00 AM, as I was leaving, I noticed an older woman in a white car trying to park next to my vehicle. There was no actual parking space available, and she was trying to squeeze into the area between the designated parking spaces. I didn't pay much attention at the time because I was in a hurry to pick up my daughter from daycare. After picking up my children, I returned to my car and discovered significant scratches on the plastic part of my vehicle. The damage was large enough that the paint had been completely scraped off. I immediately went back to the YMCA, hoping they could check their security cameras and possibly help identify the person responsible. Instead, I was told that they could not review the cameras themselves and that I needed to call the police. I was told that they would review the footage only if the police requested it. We called the police. An officer came and documented the incident. However, he did not even go inside the YMCA to review or request the camera footage. He simply explained that cameras of this type are often not clear enough to identify a license plate or a person's face. What I found especially frustrating is that there seemed to be no attempt to look for another way to identify the person. Even if the video quality was not good enough to clearly see the license plate or face, I suggested checking the approximate time of the incident and comparing it with the YMCA's membership check-in records. Members scan their membership when entering the facility. I had seen exactly where the woman went after parking, so it seemed reasonable to at least check whether someone matching the description entered the building around that time. Instead, I felt completely left on my own. I understand that the YMCA cannot be responsible for every incident that happens in its parking lot. I am not expecting the YMCA to pay for my car or to magically identify the driver. But after six years as a member, I expected basic cooperation, communication, and a genuine effort to help when something like this happened on YMCA property. The damage to my car was upsetting, but the lack of assistance and the way the situation was handled was even more disappointing. After six years, this was the final straw for us. We canceled our membership today and also canceled our children's swimming lessons. Very disappointed that after being loyal members for six years, this is how our relationship with the YMCA ends.

I know Ella from a previous class which she is not teaching any longer. To my surprise, she was here today and I was so excited. She is an unbelievable instructor and even though I'm pretty fit, I thought I would try this class because it fit into my schedule. It's amazing how new classes attack different muscles in your body and you can see how it helps you. I know that Ella changes her exercise routine regularly. She is an amazing instructor, and I hope to have her again in the future.

That said, the equipment is definitely starting to show its age. A lot of the machines could use some minor tune-ups, and quite a few of the seats have cracked or ripped vinyl that really should be replaced. The cable attachments are another area that needs attention. There aren't enough handle options to begin with, and most of the D-handles are in rough shape. Many have broken straps that have been tied back together in knots, and the rubber grips are worn out or literally falling apart. Replacing these would be an inexpensive upgrade that would make a noticeable difference. My biggest complaint is that they still don't have a dedicated hip thrust machine. Hip thrusts have become one of the most popular lower-body exercises, and it's surprising that a modern commercial gym doesn't offer one. Adding one would be a huge improvement and would keep the gym competitive with newer facilities. Overall, this is a clean gym with an excellent staff, but it's time to invest in updating and maintaining the equipment so it matches the quality of the people who work there.
