This week we had an issue with one of our heaters, and Dan and Allie came with a $300 repair kit and a $1,600 replacement water heater. Dan quickly saw that the gas valve replacement kit would solve the issue and immediately went that route. Eight years ago Dan revealed the "secrets" of making a good water heater last a good long time: 1. Keep the temperature setting constant, even if leaving the house for an extended period. This keeps the water tank from contracting and expanding due to changes in water temps. 2. Check the anode yearly and change when necessary. Owner manuals tell how and why. 3. Run household water softener systems at the lowest possible setting. Such systems are the enemy of water heaters. OWH's prices are below others I have checked. Water heaters are very expensive in Utah now because of our rules requiring ultra-low NOX heaters to be used in accordance with California regulations (yes, California). Ultra-low NOX heaters are ultra-expensive.

I put out for bids on an install of the ductwork and vents through the roof connecting to bathroom fans, and one through an exterior wall that would connect to a kitchen range. I received several responses from HVAC specialists knowing what the job entailed and providing a range of bids for the service. Manwill responded with a message refusing the service and telling me I need an electrician to do this installation. My electrician explicitly requested an HVAC specialist to run the new ductwork and connect the fans to the ventilation system. For being a longstanding business in the community, and a service that installs AC & heating systems requiring ductwork and ventilation, I was surprised they don't understand an electrician doesn't typically provide these HVAC services. I wouldn't have requested the service if I didn't know who I needed the service from. This indicated they most likely neglected to read the details of the request and assumed it was a small job they didn't want. Either way, with their lack of clarification prior to refusing the service, followed by their misinformation and misdirection to a different service altogether, I won't be requesting services from Manwill in the future. This isn't difficult because I've used them prior for annual maintenance calls and they're one of the most expensive HVAC providers in the state. Easy choice. Find another HVAC provider if you don't want to be dismissed or paying too much.

We got a clear answer about a needed repair and he came by the next day and installed two inexpensive sensors. Total cost came to $139. He ran the furnace through several heating cycles while he waited to ensure he had corrected the problem. A few days before we had a competitor's technician take a look, but he didn't find the problem and instead recommended about $2200 in so-called repair parts. Most of those parts had nothing to do with the the problem. And I had installed some of them as new parts only a month or so ago. Talk about a scam. The competitor also tried to talk us into a complete, new HVAC system!!! Go with Method. They are a small, local company dedicated to their customers.

I've reviewed Thompson's Comfort Connection (TCC) multiple times here over the 15+ years I've been…read moreon Yelp, and have always given them top ratings every time. And after a four-year period where everything has been running great, I had to have TCC come out again to check on my 17-year-old Amana high-efficiency furnace and the blower that brings in fresh air to the burners and exhausts combustion gases to an outside port along our front wall. That fan was running but cycling on and off, and we could smell some gas there at the exhaust exit panel outside. One quick email on Sunday, the 7th, and Austin from TCC arrived Monday morning to check out our issue. After disassembling our "inducer" motor/blower (a small fan in a gas furnace that creates a draft, pulling in fresh air for combustion and exhausting dangerous exhaust gases out through the flue) housing, Austin found the problem. After 17 years of use, the blower housing drain port was clogged (spider nest? dirt? both?) Austin cleaned it all out and flushed all the rubber drain tubes as well (which were also pretty gnarly), and that fixed it! All back together and running great...and the inducer blower now stays on and runs great. We're back in business on a solid 17-year-old Amana H.E. furnace! Five stars for prompt service response, fair pricing ($287 out the door), and a pleasant, professional, and communicative repair technician...Austin. Solidly recommend TCC, and ask for Austin if you can! Five Stars! P.S.: My neighbor across the street called me the next day and said that "...her furnace has just stopped working. We used this company to replace our HVAC system this summer. The installation of the new dual fuel…read moresystem seemed to go well but when we got the final invoice we noticed that a different and smaller furnace was installed than the one on the bid. When we asked about this we were told that the one that was bid was too big for the space and that the smaller furnace would suffice for our home. This was done without any mention of the replacement to us and it appeared to be done so that the installers would not have to spend a little more time changing the ductwork. We hired an independent party to assess the size furnace needed for our home and he said that the one they installed was too small and would struggle to beat the home on really cold days. After we insisted that they make it right, they removed the small furnace and replaced it with the one in the bid. All seemed well until the weather got colder and we noticed that the system was not transitioning from the heat pump to the furnace. Long story short, they had not installed a heat sensor that is critical to the proper functioning of the system. They have corrected the problem and the system is now working well. So, this company has made good on what we had agreed to o. the bid but it took co side table effort on our part to get this to happen,

Given our fantastic experience with mini split ductless AC installation and performance in our…read moremaster bedroom in Houston, we decided to move forward with the same in Park City. Houston, TX, June 2018: Mitsubishi 9k cooling only unit with one indoor head, a pad, and a 20' line cost $3,606 Park City, UT, August 2020: Fujitsu 24k heating/cooling unit with two indoor heads, wall bracket installation, and a very short line initially cost $8,673 Thankfully, Select Comfort accommodated us without delay despite the pandemic. Because we were concerned about snow drift in the winter, we asked Select Comfort to install the outdoor unit on the exterior wall (of our master bedroom). This simplified things, making very little line necessary, so the installers were happy to oblige. We unfortunately did not understand the implications. Installation into the studs of the wall of our bedroom meant that whenever the AC was running, the entire room would hum/buzz. (The outdoor unit's vibration would transmit through the studs into the rafters--think being in a car with one window slightly cracked and how it feels to your ears.) It was a nightmare, literally, as it was impossible to sleep. We reported the problem to the salesman immediately after installation, and he sent a technician out to tighten up the bracket. We then didn't use the AC again until late June 2021. When we did, we had the same problem with intolerable vibration, but we also had a new leak (and water damage) from one of the indoor heads, so that was the first priority. Once we got that sorted, and unsuccessfully tried to remedy the vibration (again tightening up the bracket and then adding isolation pads), we requested that the outdoor unit be moved. We were happy to pay an additional fee, but since we were still within the 1-year installation warranty period, didn't feel like we were warned, and reported problems from Day 1, we hoped it wouldn't be a lot. We were offered a reduced rate of $2000 (still quite a lot). We had no choice, unless we wanted to suffer through the auditory discomfort and lose sleep. The relocation to a stand on the ground made a huge difference; however, it took a few more visits to get it running properly. (We pray there is not a leak or other issues in the future.) To be clear, we thank Select Comfort for continuing to work with us to try to make it right. But, it was painful for all. At the very least, others should learn from our mistake and not install on living quarters walls without being aware of the risk for vibration. (We just had no idea because the one in our Houston home was installed on a pad on the ground away from our bedroom.) We also suggest, if possible, planning your installation before the heat of summer, not at the end of it, so you can troubleshoot any issues early in the warranty period. Hopefully, the unit will serve us well without further incident!
