i have no idea why the low rating. i have had healthy paws pet insurance for my dachshund since she was born, 2017. i had 250/90%, but recently due to rate increases, which do occur, i changed to 500 deductible with 90% reimbursement. you have to understand and read the fine print. they do not cover routine office visits, and other routine care. they cover accidents, illnesses, read, read ,read. other than a few small illnesses and accidental lick of hot sauce that sent her to the er, i had no real issues until i did. she had an small accident that turned into a $10,500 + several thousand at er numerous times, totally around $13,000. for disc surgery, and numerous trips to the er and office visits. i was reimbursed 90%. i only paid about $1,800 and the rest was totally covered by healthy paws, i have no idea what i would have done with out their insurance. i was paid with in days of submitting the claims. i have zero complaints. yes, they may be more expensive, but when you file a claim, hand in the proper paper work, and you have read the fine print, they do cover just as they state. you must read your documents and make sure your pet does not have pre exisiting illnesses, which are not covered, office visits are not covered, er fee visit, not covered, dr. office visit, not covered. what is covered- surgery, medications, diagnostic studies, lab testing, treatment for illnesses, diseases, and accidents. i know that yearly it does go up and it is a struggle, but it would have been a bigger struggle without it. healthy paws has the easiest claim process and super quick reimbursement. read more

I WOULD GIVE ZERO STARS IF I COULD. AVOID HEALTHY PAWS. Do not use Healthy Paws. I am absolutely disgusted with this company. I have insured multiple dogs with them, and my current dog has been insured since he was 3 months old. He is now 7. They started out great, but over the years they have continually found reasons not to cover things, while my premiums have more than doubled. I was even forced to drop from 90% coverage to 50% because the cost became ridiculous. My dog now has severe gum disease and needs multiple teeth extracted. A couple of years ago, Healthy Paws specifically told me that while they didn't cover dental cleanings, they did cover extractions. Now, after years of paying premiums, they have apparently "tightened the language" and told me extractions are only covered if the tooth was injured in an accident -- such as being hit by a car or getting hurt in a dog fight. My dog has a serious disease, and they won't cover the treatment. And their standard answer when you call about coverage is essentially: Go ahead and spend thousands of dollars, submit the claim afterward, and we'll tell you if we feel like covering it. That isn't insurance. Gum disease can literally be fatal - how open earth can they not cover that? It's in the words - "DISEASE". I have been a loyal customer for many years. I have paid them thousands of dollars in premiums. And now that my dog actually needs significant medical care, they have found another way to avoid paying. I will NEVER insure another pet with Healthy Paws, and I strongly urge everyone else to stay away. Sadly I am stuck, because rarely do new insurance companies take on a more "senior" dog. Been paying since 2016, no claims, but regularly get over 100% premium increases. Since the class action lawsuits and buyouts, this company is unethical and they can't be trusted (class action suit is due to their nonpayment for claims). read more

Healthy Paws informed me that my 15-year-old cat's monthly premium would rise from $75 to $448.17. Because of this increase, I had to find alternative coverage. In my opinion, this kind of jump in cost is unreasonable and made the plan unsustainable for us. I cannot recommend them. read more

Horrible horrible horrible. Stay far away. We've been paying for our dog for many years and premiums went up a few months ago from $120 to $475. We scheduled dental surgery for cracked teeth most likely due to age and a possible fracture from being hit in the mouth from a ball but turns out they don't cover dental if it's not a proven accident or injury. They don't cover routine or any type of vet visits, meds, vaccines, NOTHING. Almost $500/month for absolutely nothing. We learned the hard way, you don't have to. So many other options out there! read more

I rescued my doggie, Roxy, from the SPCA shelter, after she was abandoned by her previous owner at the age of 4. She was a Lab mix. Roxy, unfortunately passed away last month but lived a good long life; almost 16.5 years; unusual for a large breed; due to excellent (human grade) food, supplements, Vet care and lots of love. I signed up with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance (HP) soon after adopting Roxy in 2013. At the time HP had reasonable insurance rates and was a relatively small company in Belleview WA. In 2013 I was paying a rate of $36.79 per month for coverage. Over the years the insurance premiums skyrocketed. By the time I cancelled the policy last month the premium had increased to $564.48 per month. My experience with HP's was mostly positive during the early years. Please be warned, however, Healthy Paws does not cover anything that has to do with "Wellness", preventative or of an "exam" nature. It seems to be highly counterintuitive that they would cover a more serious (and more expensive disease/ailment) than possibly preventing it in the first place with a wellness exam. I just don't get it. As time went on the premiums increased tremendously. There, apparently, is no cap for the increases that HP's hits its customers with. And they know that as the pet gets older you are stuck with them; you are uninsurable with anyone else and you need the insurance because you have a senior pet that might need the reimbursements (for medical care) that older dogs might typically require. During the last month of her life, as her arthritis, had become quite severe, the Vet prescribed a strong arthritis medication, requiring injections at the Vet. These were initially on a schedule of 2 times per week for approximately one month; and then once a week for the next month. Unfortunately, Roxy didn't survive past the first month or so. HPs was reimbursing me for the injection visits (under $50 per visit) for the first 4 visits and the last visit; but they rejected the claim for the 5th visit. Requiring claim to be reviewed by a review board. I addressed this after my dogs passing. Several emails and phone calls took place between me and HPs customer service and claims dept. HP's claims manager even stated that HPs did cover the injections (and that it was a covered item) yet they still required a board to review the claims. Multiple emails, phone calls and a board to review a claim that HPs deemed to be a covered claim but then to hold off on paying one $40 claim? Seriously.? I even received an email after my dog's passing (the policy was already canceled at that time because my dog had passed) from the claims manager saying Hello and hopefully you and your dog are doing well!!! It is extremely disheartening and unacceptable the total lack of empathy and compassion Healthy Paws shows to pet parents especially after their beloved pet has passed. It is quite apparent that the only thing Healthy Paws cares about is money. Below is a timeline/listing of the premiums charged by Healthy Paws to me to cover my dog. Please note that my dog never had anything major done: no major surgeries, no cancer; only, mostly non-invasive office-visit medical treatments. Oct 2013: $36.79 per month 2015: $42.67 per month 2017: $53.91 per month 2019: $73.43 per month 2020: $110.14 per month 2021: $165.21 2022: $311.31 2023: $207.47 (move to Texas) 2023 (Oct - anniversary date): $259.29 per month 2024: $359.85 per month 2025: $564.48 per month I do not recommend Healthy Paws; in general dealing with Healthy Paws has been an extremely frustrating, disappointing and expensive experience. You would be wise to stay as far away from Healthy Paws as possible! read more

I don't often leave reviews, but this seems like such a racket. I paid premiums on my previous dog and current dog. Very, very grateful that both dogs that I love to the moon and back have been healthy. They have denied any claim that I have ever put in. Just heard that they are doubling by premium as my current dog turns 7 (note--I have paid since he was 10 weeks old and they never paid a claim). For the double premium, I get half the coverage with a higher deductible. FEELS LIKE A RACKET! They are taking advantage of how much people love their animals. So very, very disappointed. Stay away from This pet Insurance!!! Terrible service. Refuse to reimburse and claim everything is "wellness" or "prevention", even when your pet is sick and diagnosed as sick/ill by the vet, they still refuse to reimburse for the pet's ILLNESS and claim it was "preventative" and refuse to reimburse. They start out with lower rates than other pet insurance which seems attractive in the beginning, but then raise the premiums tremendously... I have several pets and when my dog turned 10 they raised the premium by 100%. All other premiums were also raised by around 50-60% - I am paying $500/month now and still they refuse to reimburse my dogs ILLNESS with vomiting and diarrhea and claim the treatment he received when he was sick was preventative. All they do is take your money, but refuse to reimburse for what you signed up to... I had to file complaints with the Department of Insurance and the BBB read more

Although they have been great for most of my dogs life paying out claims , I just got a notification that my premium will go up from $127 a month to $420 a month. She just turned 10. I can't go to another insurance company because of preexisting conditions so in order to keep her covered with something, I had to customize my policy. I now will pay $175 but with a $3,000 deductible and only a $70% payout. My deductible was $500 and 80% payout. Healthy Paws appears to be doing this to everyone once they turn 10 so beware. Their explanation is that the increase is based on the number of claims from your state. It's clear that once a pet turns 10 they want you to drop the policy so they don't have to pay out for health issues as your pet gets older. read more

Warning!!!! Do not purchase this insurance. I wish I knew what I know now. I took out the policy when my cat was 8 weeks old. I had 90% reimbursement with $100 deductible. She just turned 10 and was diagnosed with a heart murmur. They have crazy rate increases. The policy was $24 a month when I took it out, and increased to $114 a month when she was 9. After all these years of paying these crazy premiums, they just dropped the coverage to 70% reimbursement and increased my deductible to $500. So now my cat is older and has a health condition they want to avoid paying. As a pet gets older you need the coverage more. Cats can live up to 20 years, so I can only imagine how much more terrible this coverage will get as she gets older. And now I can't switch companies because she has a pre-existing condition. This company should be ashamed of themselves. Very unethical! read more

I have had healthy paws for over 9 years. They have increased my rate substantially and refuse to have any accountability or compassion for my case. They do not care about your pets and will happily take your premiums while your pets are young and need no care. When they begin to age they will increase your rate to the point you can no longer afford thier coverage. Theoretically when your pet may actually need care and hope you cancel before they have to pay any claims. Do not recommend thier coverage to anyone. read more

I received an email today that my almost 13 year old policy for my small dog was going from $182 a month to over $500 w/ a reduction in reimbursement from 90% to 70%! When I called to inquire, I found out they had my dog classified as a medium size instead of small on the new policy when their records show she's only 14 lbs. If you decide to stay with this company you should make sure they are charging you for the correct weight & price. I cancelled the policy. So much for appreciating their long term customers! read more
