True 4 star bar. Simple, comfortable, normal neighborhood bar. I'm gonna start with my one gripe: price. A corona is $6? Nah man, that's not right. Maybe it is market price in DuPont, but this ain't DuPont. On to the good. I love the feel and atmosphere here. Real unassuming, local waterhole kinda place. Where you might stop off on the way home from work, and you know the bartenders kind of place. And those bartenders are great people. Super nice, warm people. Not in a fake way either (I think). And they have an upstairs section which i didn't even know about til I saw someone walk up there on my dozenth visit or so. Wtf. Anyway, the space is great and so are the people. I do take some offense to at least one reference I saw where it said the neighborhood was a little rougher. And this was posted recently, not the 1980s. Like, really? A neighborhood full of townhouses with well kept gardens is suddenly rough because you passed someone who didn't make six figures? Stay in Arlington. Anyway. And just like that, I found my favorite DC bar. Trusty's is in a strange section of Capitol Hill, almost to the river crossing toward Anacostia. It's a somewhat forgotten part of the neighborhood, just far enough away from the Capitol to be transitional. I stopped in on a week night with my wife and we both got burgers. She got a beer, I got a coke, and we enjoyed the evening. Songs were playing on a juke box along the wall, other patrons were playing board games. And when I say they were playing games, it was actually kind of intense with multiple tables competing at various games and additional stacks of games available. We checked out the upstairs which was really awesome. There was the famous school bus bar with canned drinks and even and outside area which would be incredible in the summer time. But we were all about our burgers. The burgers weren't amazing, but they were good enough to make me want to return. Honestly, DC lacks these kinds of bars with a neighborhood feel. And when they do exist, they just aren't good--it's more about the hype. For me, Trusty's lived up to the hype. People of all walks of life were in there, hamming it up, enjoying themselves, letting loose in a friendly atmosphere. The friendly atmosphere of Trusty's is really a stand out. It's just unbeatable here in DC. And for that reason, if you want to head to a bar by yourself, or just enjoy yourself, Trusty's is a phenomenal place to go. For me it's an instant favorite. A bar with a school bus inside? This I have to see. Granted, Trusty's Friendly Bar has been around for awhile but it recently open its second floor bar. What's more, there's a shell of a yellow school bus where you can order your next round through the window. Your first question is inevitably, "how the hell did they fit this through the doors." Your next question eventually becomes, "where the hell do I sit?" The bus is a huge novelty but ends up cluttering the upstairs bar and makes it difficult for large groups. That being said, Trusty's has a great outdoor patio on the second floor. Plus, the beer prices are pretty fair (most beers served in cans). Trusty's is a legend in the neighborhood and so I'd been meaning to try it out for a long time. Now that I've been I can't imagine going back. Trusty's has three pretty distinct spaces. Upstairs is a short bus that serves cans of craft beer. There is also an indoor outdoor patio space with games. Downstairs is a main bar with taps of overpriced cheap beer and a grill to get cheese steaks and other unhealthy food. There were a ton of games on downstairs and there was a diverse clientele hanging out. The problem is that at both the food and the beer we're mediocre and over priced. In the end I much prefer wisdom which is just down the block. read more

Thankfully, that has nothing to do with a predeliction towards lending credibility towards Larry Clark films and rather has an innocuous relationship to the novel "school bus" that comprises half of Trusty's new second floor. As described by Jack F., the school bus itself is basically a shell where you order your drinks from the window. While some people might find this theme incredibly misplaced, I think the potential notoriety it might spark is rather beneficial to a Washington DC bar scene that more often than not creates a safe haven for drab bars with little sense of character. The food here is horseshit, but there is no reason to fret. Trusty's has an ample selection of canned beers (the tap beers could use some major work) and has enough oddities and intricacies to appeal to most people who eschew standard tastes. Aside from the schoolbus theme on the second floor, there is a nice outdoor patio and a first floor filled with games and a jukebox. Trusty's generally seems to appeal to neighborhood residents and individuals looking for a slightly less traditional place to relax. I mean, what can be less traditional than drinking in a school bus? I guess I wouldn't know because I didn't go to public school. I'm such an elitist piece of crap. Anyhow, regardless of all that, you should go here to soak in some of the tasty beverages while enjoying an interesting environment. Trusty's was a serendipitous find for me and soon became the goto bar for my softball team. This is the quintessential dive bar. Dark and dank, but full of character. The entire decor is old auto ads, license plates and oil cans. You can get your beer in a mason jar and sample some of the best burgers you will ever have. The trusty burger is awesome, but the double trusty is the way to go. The jukebox is always pumping, and every table has an assortment of board games from candyland, connect four, the game of life and even jenga. There is also one of those hunting games for those that need more stimulation, but there is nothing better than a pitcher with a burger and some jenga. Word is that they are expanding to have an upstairs and a larger patio. One warning, if the place is busy and you are hungry, order immediately. I'm a big fan of local hole-in-the-wall dive bars and I REALLY tried to like Trusty's, but I am going to have to break their string of five star reviews. This past weekend, before moving to Miami, a longtime "Hill Rat" friend of mine chose Trusty's for her farewell celebration. There were probably 20-30 of us that passed through the bar during the course of the evening. Admittedly, we were probably pretty loud, but never rowdy. For a place that prides itself on being friendly, I noticed more than a few "we don't take kindly to strangers" sneers from the other patrons. Cold shoulders aside, the real downer for me personally was the price of beer. After buying two pitchers to share with the group, I was out nearly $40! This is hands-down my new favorite bar in DC. I'm so happy to have found my dive-bar-happy place to (temporarily) take place of Aero Bar in SD. Staff is super helpful and friendly, as they should be. They will put on any football game for you and/or help you find a spot where you can watch your game. Food is delicious! I'm not saying it is healthy...nor am I saying it is grease-free, but it is the best it gets for bar food. It is so funny that someone below complained about the nachos, because I thought they were perfect. They are by no means fancy-shamance or authentic (in the Mexican sense), but they are quite tasty and go well with a mason jar of Fat Tire. The draft beer selection could be better, but what they lack in draft they make up for in bottle/can selection and prices. And last, but not least, there is a BUS as the bar upstairs. Oh my that smell of Worcestershire and beef is intoxicating! Trusty's has many things going for it. It's a stumble from the potomac metro, so you don't actually have to hang out near potomac. Woo-hoo! The decor is of course Trendy Truckstop, and I have to say someone worked very hard on all the art in here. I really appreciated the rear-view mirror collage in the ladies b'room and the scented tree above the toilet was a nice touch. I would call their cheeseburger a safe bet, go-to bar food burger, and I'd get it again. I sortof liked that it came with chips so I didn't overdose on fries instead. Nice selection of board games and a good crowd. They also had cool tunes goin' on, and I would've given Trusty's a 5 star, but the music was waaay too loud. I'm not that square, I just prefer to shout conversation, instead of scream it across the table. The pitchers are pricey - unless you're sticking with bud, so be careful. I went here for an Arkansas Razorback game, as they seem to be the place in town to go. There were lots of fans, and as in true Arkansas style I ran into someone I knew from college. Finally made it to Trusty's since the upstairs has been completed. What a fantastic job they've done, increasing the size of this place at least 200%, adding an outdoor patio, and the school bus is pretty cool. We have some friends who live just a block away and we don't get to this neighborhood very often. This place in itself is worth the trip, and only a 2 minute walk from the Potomac Ave. Metro. They have a great array of games, including the always reliable Connect 4 and they have National Bohemian cans! I really like this place and will be back again soon, even though it couldn't be further across town from home. So the fellas were giving me my big send off back to the Lone Star State, and of course a place with great beers and better service was on the menu. So When my homeboy suggested Trusty's i was like "cool, I can do a dive and not be extra swanky with it...) I shoulda known what i was getting myself into. It's a dive and by dive i mean dark, dank and dingy. Upon stepping inside the smell of fried food and grease hit me in the face. Every part of me was like "RUN RUN!! FAR AWAY!!!" But I took a deep swallow and went inside. I was promptly greeted by the barkeep and told what's on tap. They did have a favorite IPA of mine (long hammer) so I wasn't completely thrown off, even after sliding me a few Mason Jars that looked like they were better suited for holding nails than brew. They got the whole "drinkin around with the fellas at the garage" theme down. From the slightly sleazy car posters in the bano, the sigage about the restaurant. The kicker to me was the food. I can imagine that if i was at the garage and somebody decided to throw a few burgers on the grill while i'm fixin my brakes, then it'd probably taste like trusty's double burger. It had the taste like a backyard burger pulled fresh off the grill. No Fries, but some potato chips. I also had the grilled cheese on texas toast (what better way to soak up a couple of pitchers?) which was grilled perfectly. Add a few games of dominoes, decent jukebox tunes with the fellas and it was an awesome pre-game for a nice night out to do other things. It's a bit off the Hill in location. Which is a great thing because the proportion of political talk at the bar decreases substantially from places like Pourhouse that are closer to the Hill. Trusty's used to be my go-to for pregaming Nationals games as they had a bus that went from Trusty's to RFK. After the unfortunate move to Nationals Park, I stopped coming to Trusty's as often. Luckily we have friends that live a block away, so it comes into the rotation once in a while. It draws a weird crowd of mid 20's people and old timers. I like the eclecticness of the place. They also offer tons of board games which I think makes it a welcoming atmosphere that you can show up to and just hang for a few hours. The happy hour deals are great, and I love that draft beers are served in a mason jar. It makes me think I'm getting a nice Dark and Stormy due to the jar, but instead it's filled with tasty liquid bread. Trusty's is pretty much the only place in this neighborhood I'd go to, but it's a fine place for any random night. It's too bad it's not as good of a pregame Nationals site, and thinking about it makes me wistful for the RFK era of the Nationals when tickets were cheap, crowds were sparse, ushers were non-existent, and Trusty's was a good pregame happy hour spot. read more

By FAR one of the coolest bars I've ever been to. It's a dive, with a younger but not too young crowd. Away from the stiff "Suits". Beer in Mason Jars, Board Games on every table, jukebox, a small bar menu (I've yet to try the food but I've been told they have amazing Grilled Cheese). Atmosphere is very chill and laid back, the bartenders don't tolerate the yuppies if you know what I mean. Ask what they have on tap and their response it "beer". Straight to the point type of place. You can spend hours playing games and suddenly they're closing down and you've just gotten started. A must-check-out dive. And it's away from the night life so it's never over crowded and it never gets out of control or sketchy. read more

I've been passing this bar for years, and remember when it first came to the neighborhood. I've seen lively crowds enjoying games on the TVs, which made me think it was a sports bar. I'm usually coerced to the burbs to enjoy and watch the local teams at bars and restaurants, where the crowd is rooting for or against the home team good-naturedly and with good spirit. Last night I convinced a friend to come to the city, and we decided to finally try Trusty's. I never thought to check Yelp for something so close to home; I'm more than willing to give a place like this the benefit of the doubt. My friend loves to cheer the home team loudly, and I never would have suggested Trustys if I had known the staff and patrons like it quiet. We were made to feel unwelcome, and Sharkey aggressively told her there was no reason to yell at a TV. First, we thought he was joking. A football game is on two televisions in a "dive" bar with arguably the biggest rivalry in the NFL. He said he hates both teams. Trash talk! Part of any sports environment, right? I was perplexed and embarrassed by his overall reaction. I really think it could have and should have been handled better than that. Another patron huffed away from the bar out to the patio, protecting his beer from noise? Simple, courteous communication would have clarified the situation without embarrassing and verbally attacking customers. The food was tasty (we had buffalo chicken cheesesteak and a blt/grilled cheese) but the overall experience left a really bad taste in my mouth. The trusty bar of Potomac Ave. Trusty's is everything you want from a local bar: friendly service, beer served in mason jars, trashy delicious bar food and always a seat at the bar. I went here after work with a friend that lives in the area for a quick bite and beer. Between the relaxed atmosphere and great service, it almost made me want to move to the area as it was unlike any bar I've seen in DC. It was almost as if we were transported to the set of "How I Met Your Mother" and we just grabbing a bite and burger at MacLarren's Pub. Their nachos are on point -- as in the trashy nachos from your childhood with fake cheese and all the toppings. I highly recommend. If nachos aren't your thing, they also have a fantastic Italian sausage. While I didn't make it upstairs -- this time -- I'm told they have a bar that is built out of the shell of a short bus. It's a bar. They have some beer. There are tables and music. Nothing to write home about in any department, and since I don't live in the area I won't make a trip back. The low review was for the food service, game selection, and cleanliness. We arrived looking to play boardgames, which is something they promote, but only found Jenga, some Trivial Pursuit cards, and an assortment of children's age games. The food took an hour and half to be brought out on a not-to-busy night, and we just ordered club sandwiches. The staff behind the bar were drinking heavily, which I am sure contributed to a few miss-delivered sandwhich orderders. And, the place could use a good scrub. BACKGROUND: Trusty's used to be a hole-in-the-wall surrounded by crackheads with just barely enough room to play a game of buck hunter. However, the charm of this place more than made up for the humble digs. Well, like your high school friend's kid sister, Trusty's is now all grown up, sexy, and ready to be taken advantage of by hordes of johnny-come-lately hipsters and, likely, the bridge and tunnel crowd. With the recent expansion, this previously cozy establishment has expanded into a huge second-floor with AWESOME open deck and full-service school-bus bar. DAMN YOU TRUSTY'S!!!! The beer list remains awesome, and the upstairs bar has pleanty of canned beer to keep you busy. The bar food is surprisingly good, and that freaking upstairs is so cool I want to punch someone in the face for not having it sooner. In my heart of hearts, I guess I still hope no one can find it, but if you do, my hat's off to you, sir. You deserve to enjoy that fresh "schoolbus seat" odor and a delicious natty-bo. read more

Must love Trusty's. I started coming here post-softball games last year, and here I am in my second season of softball, and we still keep coming back for more (it helps that Trusty's has sponsored our softball team this year...) Most pitchers are ca. $10 range - a very small price to pay for post game rowdiness. I haven't really ventured outside of my usual order, but if you are a new comer to Trusty's, and are of the omnivore persuasion, then it's imperative you try one of their CHEESEBURGERS ($6). Bar none, these cheeseburgers are the best I've had in DC: they make all their own patties, so you know you're not getting a pre-processed patty (like at McDonald's, et al). All hamburgers are served with a side of Ruffles potato chips, which I think is a nice break from the standard fry fare. Gaming: Trusty's has a number of games, most notably Connect 4 and JEEEENGA (it's the "drunken version" with dares on the Jenga blocks). The bar is located about 100 feet from the entrance to the Potomac Ave (Blue/Orange line) metro stop. Not exactly the most convenient spot, but it's definitely worth the trip. read more

I didn't know Trusty's existed until it became the official bar for Arkansas Razorback watch parties (WOO PIG SOOIE!) The upstairs outdoor patio was a really nice place to watch the football games before it got too cold. Didn't know they had an upstairs? I didn't either, until the third time I went. Pretty typical beer selection and prices. I really like their homemade salsa, grilled half smoke and the philly cheesesteak. But what I like most is how laid back everyone is. There are so many board games available that it's often hard to decide what to play. And for a smaller space, they've crammed TV's into every nook and cranny for your viewing pleasure. Great bar. Trusty's full serve bar is bad ass. The juke box is tight and the bartenders are cool. I tend to utilize it as a pre-rage spot. They serve PBR cans and have longhammer on tap. The dogs, half smokes and cheese steaks are awesome. Unfortunately the location merits a one star deduction for being so far off the beaten path. However there are two upsides to that. I've been working and studying so much that I don't get to do a whole lot lately. I fly from Detroit to DC almost every Sunday and get a carryout and go to my hotel. Sad! Sad! Sad! Not only am I letting summer go by but I'm missing out on great places like this. I had to drive around to find this place and was a little put off by the barbed wired buildings around and the places with boarded up windows. Not because I'm a snob, I'm from the Detroit area. I simply don't know the areas in DC yet. I parked and walked by a bar on the way here and saw a ton of people hanging out and I noticed the bar's sign "20 dollars all you can drink during the World Cup game". WOW! AM I home? Is this an alternate universe with local places and easy going people in the metropolitan DC area? Why yes it is! This is great! I step in to Trusty's and grab a local wheat in the mason jar and take in the comfort and happiness of a local place. I order a second and the bartender tells me that he bought me one, shakes my hand and introduces me to 2 of the customers. How great is that? I didn't go upstairs, but I'm sure it was fun. If you're looking for a drink and fun in a divey little neighborhood bar even if it's not your neighborhood, you'll love Trusty's. The place has everything you might need for a random night alone or with friends. The first floor has a full bar, a jukebox and even random games to play like Jenga and Connect 4. Awesome drinking games. If you want a bite to soak up some of the beer you might be drinking, there's a bar food menu. You can grab a burger and chips that are actually pretty tasty. Upstairs might have the best feature. The whole upstairs bar is an actual old school bus. How awesome is that? They even have the old bus seats along the wall for additional seating. It's a truly nostalgic feel AND it allows a feeling of rebelliousness for being able to drink "on a school bus". "Trusty's where real people come to be with real people." The beers are cheap and the half-smoked are grilled to perfection. Also, the staff is as they should be, no nonsense but always up for a good time. The staff reflects the type of patrons that would find this place fun, down to earth people. The games are a great draw. You can challenge your friends to a somewhat sober game of Jenga, or you might be challenged by a neighboring table. First time I was at Trusty's with 2 of my gal pals, we were challenged to a game of trivial pursuit by 2 men from the neighborhood.
