Ok, so I love Mr. Henry's and have been coming here for a long LONG time! But, to be honest, it is a difficult place to review. I can't decide between 5 stars which my gut tells me OR 4 stars because the interior is so drab and dreary. Ultimately, I decided to give it 5 stars because the food was so good and the service was so lovely! So there - that is my decision! We returned to Mr. Henry's after a long hiatus and we found the food still among the best comfort food in the city. My spouse's blue cheese hamburger was juicy and meaty. The potato chips were crispy and not greasy (and tasted like real potatoes). The cole slaw was tart, a little sweet and a little tangy - just like it should be. A very good meal. For me, I had the pulled pork. OMG the pork was so good. Very moist, real meat and it had a luxurious barbecue sauce that neither overwhelmed the meat nor underwhelmed the sandwich! And the bun was toasted to perfection and held together perfectly under the moisture of all that delicious pulled pork. Really really good! One thing that struck both of us was how VERY good the service was! Naveeta was so friendly, so professional and so talkative (without ever interrupting us). She really added a great casual yet welcomed atmosphere to Mr. Henry's. She was able to help us navigate the menu. If our glasses got close to empty, she was right there for a refill! She is the consummate waitress to be sure! The other waiter (who did not wait on us) also seemed friendly and professional. How did they find such good people to work there??? The ambiance of the dining room leaves a little to improve on. It's not just old, it's run down. That doesn't stop me from loving the place and it will NOT stop me from coming back of course. But, it is, to be honest, not a good looking or modern dining room. It is comfortable though and that is consistent with the type of food you get here. It is not fine dining BUT the food is all SO DAMN GOOD that you really don't care! Is it a touch dirty looking? Maybe. But, again, I can overlook that if the food knocks my socks off (which it did). And when the service is great, I have to give this place its due. I guess that is the real reason Mr. Henry's has been around so long. Delivering great comfort food in a friendly and efficient way with a big smile on their faces! Mr Henry's is awesome. We were walking back from the National Art Gallery, and it was lunchtime. With 4 people/different preferences, we started looking for a bite. At first we went into nearby Hawk and Dove, but they only had brunch items, and some of us were looking for something more savory/substantial. One more block, and the answer appeared, like a rainbow after a summer storm. It was the only crowded place today, a good sign! We were seated in about 3 minutes and had a great meal. Son and I both liked the grilled ham and cheese. The ham was great- just the right thickness and perfect blend of salty and sweet. The fried pickles were the perfect appetizer to take the edge off our hunger. My wife liked, but couldn't finish, her breakfast quesadilla. DIL enjoyed the waffle stacker. Wife said the waffle was delicious. One of the most historic places on Capitol Hill, friendly staff, good food, and a unique experience. Highly recommend! read more

yes I agree with another customer. if I could leave less than one star I would. Almost left because nobody waited on us. one whole side is a smoking section. the food was horrible. I brought home for my dog and we always eat leftovers but not this chicken and dressing. when we were leaving waitress ask us how the food was and we were honest and told her we didn't like it. she snapped and said WHY, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT?? we told her what we thought and she said "ill let the cook know". all waitresses were rude and it ruined our first and LAST time eating there! never again!!! read more

Decided to try out this local landmark on a Friday night. I ordered the Philly steak. I wasn't a huge fan of it. Not sure why, it just wasn't fit me. The bread was a miss. And the onions that were supposed to be sautéed were lacking color. The fries were good and my cocktail was really good. The service was definitely the highlight! Drinks were good.. food was mediocre like very subpar... the oil needs to be changed and the meats seasoned prior to cooking. The fries were ok as long as you didn't get a thick cut potato cause they weren't cooked fully. Nice corner spot restaurant that seems to be a neighborhood staple for many. We were visiting DC and looking for a place to listen to some live jazz. Since we were staying in the Capital Hill area, and we found Mr. Henry's, we decided to stop in on their Wednesday Jazz Jam session. Overall, it was pretty fun...here are some of our observations: - We got there around 7:30pm, which was good since the place filled up quickly after that before the 8pm show started. - Service as really abysmal...some of the worst I've had at any place in a long time. First, it took a while just to get menus and water, then the guy didn't even hardly talk to us, and then after we got our food our server virtually disappeared, and no one seemed to be working our side of the room at all. Later, during the show, after unsuccessfully trying to flag anyone down, I had to go up to the bar to get a refill on my beer. And, when we decided to leave, I had to go back to the bar to get the check so I could pay the bill. - Food was not bad, but not cheap for what it is. My wife and I first ordered the fried pickles, which were good, and then we split both the Pesto Burger and the Veggie Quesadilla. Those were both tasty. - The first hour with the professional band was really good. After that, there were a lot of walk-up performances...and while I applaud the concept, some of them really shouldn't be allowed to perform anymore. While I get that that is the concept of the place, the best way to think about the $10 pp cover is that you're paying that for the first hour of music and after that you never know what you're going to get. Great jazz here! I attended with a freind and we had an absolute blast. The band was really vibing.

We came for jazz last week and the LLQ band was awesome. We got there a little early to enjoy dinner before the music started. The upstairs area was pretty stuffy and hot. However it was decorated with beautiful art which we took some time to appreciate. Our waitress was attentive and very sweet. We ordered a burger and a small Caesar salad with a crabcake. My husband said his burger was very good and the salad I got was decent. I was really pleasantly surprised by the crab cake - mostly crab, very little filler. I'd definitely come back for a bite and a few drinks again! read more

I recently made a quick visit to Mr. Henry's as a going away night out for a dear friend. We made plans to weather the brutal cold (20 degrees), but who likes to stay home all day even though it's cold out, right? The plan was to meet up around 06:30 pm. Well, as you know women are always late (quick duck). lol Moreover, I called up one of my cousins who lives around the corner to meet me. While waiting on both women I decided to order from the menu. I have a traditional thing I do when it's under 30 degrees out: order an Irish Coffee. Well, let me tell you, this was the largest serving of Irish Coffee I've ever had and it was prepared in the best way (Coffee, Jameson Whisky, and Whipped Cream). Just as I received my drink my cousin showed up and we decided to head over to the bar (Bartender, Tim) since she's a regular (CHEERS) I felt comfortable meeting her friends. After another hour, my other friend finally showed up (smh, lol). But that didn't matter because my cousin and I needed to catch up anyway. My food arrived, and lucky for me, I brought my appetite. I ordered the Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich (tangy BBQ sauce on a toasted Bun, Cole Slaw, real potato chips, and pickles). I was so hungry, that I made a "Happy Plate." If you've ever been here, it's a nice spot to enjoy 'live' music, and that night, they had a Jazz Open Mic where local musicians could play together. It started around 08:00 pm. After hanging out and having fun downstairs we decided to head up to enjoy the open mic and participate. We ordered two more Irish Coffees and enjoyed the entertainment (and gave generous tips to the host and his band) until 11:00 pm. A great experience! read more

Yesterday, I met up with a friend from out of town here. I had never been, but needless to say I've stumbled upon another pub to put on my list of places to grab a drink in the district. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy and intimate. I don't know if they have an expansion, but the bar I sat at is pretty small and there are *some* tables, but I'd argue the seating might be limited during peak season / hours. We didn't order any of the cocktails as we kept mostly to basic girl orders (tequila soda), but I saw a couple of them getting made and they looked really good -- especially their moscow mule. After a while, we decided to order food instead of going somewhere else. I got the pulled pork and my friend got the classic burger with everything on it; we also shared an order of half fries / half rings. I will start by saying this place is definitely on the lower end of DC prices, but still expect to spend at least $15 on a sandwich. That said, the pulled pork was flavorful, juicy, plentiful, and I did not feel cheated. My friend's burger also looked VERY yummy: it was a thicker patty, so if you prefer smashburgers this might not be your vibe. The fries and rings we had were good, but the standout were the fries -- they were a handcut, thicker wedge style that was crispy yet super fluffy on the interior. These are a must order. It's worth noting that this place is an LGBTQ+ establishment and apparently a mainstay in the queer community and local music scene -- the bartender told us about how Roberta Flack got her start there! I'm not normally in Capitol Hill, but now I got a place if I'm in that borough. Had a great time. read more

I am a fan of this spot. They're my go-to for a midday drink, or lunch. When the weather is pleasant, you can't beat people watching from their terrasse. Their burgers are very well crafted and they've got a couple different patty options making them able to appease all palate types so that's definitely a plus as well. The servers always seem to have a good attitude and disposition so that's definitely appreciated. They've also got a good beer selection as well as a decent wine selection. The bar is a little intimate and I feel like it'll be cool to hang in there on a cool night. There really are no complaints. read more

For me, the ambiance had a definite and rich sense of history here, that I appreciated. On the other hand, other people in our party thought the space was grungy and in need of a refresh. We arrived before Happy Hour ended at 7 PM, and ordered burgers, fries, and Long Island iced teas. The servers and patrons were friendly and exuberant. The food arrived hot, the fries were plentiful and crispy, and the drinks were strong. The other folks arrived after 7, ordered wine and fish dinners, and were not happy with the food quality or the price. Stopped in for lunch after visiting Eastern Market on a really hot Sunday. Place was packed, but we three squeezed into a booth. Water, lots of water and ice. Split crab cake platter, which they were nice enough to split into dishes. Each dish had one cake, really nice veg and some fried potato slices. Cake was good, all back fin, but little breading. Excellent live music, but that doesn't really make up for the almost complete lack of service (we sat down at about 8:05 pm, didn't have a waiter come by (to leave us menus and napkins) until like 9:15 - no water, no drinks, no food, nothing - then disappear again. It wasn't just us, either, as we noticed most tables rarely if ever being waited on. Also, the space is grungy/cramped, not particularly comfortable. Sad to say, I never came to this historic venue when I lived in the neighborhood in the late 1970's and it took until last night for use to come, hoping to hear the Bob Schwartz Quartet. Nice intimate venue upstairs to hear jazz, and the Quartet was in fine form, interesting program focused on blues singer and songwriter Percy Mayfield. We had already eaten dinner, but the beer and wine list were fine, then I had chocolate cake for dessert. My wife had the house-made chips which she felt were the best potato chips she had ever had. We sat with a jazz vocalist friend who liked her salmon dinner. Good experience -- we will be back. read more

Mr Henry's is fun. Fun, fun, fun. Staff even break into the occasional spontaneous dancing when they crank the music up to play some 70s or 80s jams. Chill li'l neighborhood spot that has been around FOREVER it seems. I remember they were open when I was in college. Great place for a quick drink or a bite to eat. Stiff drinks and nice bar fare = a winner. Parking on Capitol Hill can always be challenging so there's that to contend with. What a delightful little surprise. I ended up at Henry's when I showed up to Barrel a few doors down and it turned out that they were closed for a private event. Our group of 5 really lucked out w Henry's-- we had no problem getting a 6-top and they were serving the happy hour menu at the tables as well. The drinks were s t r o n g. I definitely didn't need that last Long Island ice tea. They seriously don't joke around. The food was also surprisingly good bar food! There could have been more buffalo chicken dip for the price, but that's really my only complaint. The popcorn shrimp was great, as were the sliders. Pretty much everything was eaten so no complaints there. And they really got me out a bind when the original venue fell through. read more

We strolled down the block and found what was an interesting corner lunch spot. We had no idea it was going to be the best place in the neighborhood. Went on a Friday night to hear some jazz. Jazz is upstairs and it sort of looks like you're going through the kitchen to get there. It's a very narrow space, crammed with tables and chairs, and a slightly raised stage at the front. There's a bar upstairs as well as a restroom. I enjoyed the music, although because of the size and shape of the space, not every seat is a good seat to see the whole band. Aaron Myers is a great entertainer as well as singer, so he kept the crowd engaged and enjoying the evening. I ordered dinner because the website said there was a $15 minimum per person (no one was checking from what I could tell). The size of the salmon blew me away and it was good, but could have used a tad more flavor (salt maybe). I was impressed that it came with veggies and a smaller portion of potatoes. It got me to eat zucchini, which I never do, so that's a win! I ordered an amaretto sour and a Magner cider. Both were delicious. I would recommend this spot and hope to return specifically for the live jazz. read more

Hmmmm where to start. The Good (always start with the good): Excellent Eastetn market location right off of Pennsylvania Ave and 6th. Decent parking in the area and excellent socially distanced options for seating. They also take phone numbers and names for contact tracing and require masks, though they do make clear that it's because there's a fine. So... The service is good, attentive without being overbearing, familial and homey without being too familiar, and the coffee was piping hot and fresh and served in a MASSIVE mug! I enjoyed that coffee so much! I had the salmon scramble which was not as warm as it could be--I ordered as a party of one and asked the waiter to tell the kitchen to hold it as my cousin wanted to join me. I get the impression they fired it and kept it under the lights until she arrived and ordered. It came out literally five minutes before her food. The home fries were not great but they were seasoned okay. My cousin liked the biscuit with jelly. I was unimpressed. The meh: So the food wasn't amazing. The menu is SMALL SMALL. If it's that small, the food should be amazing, amirite?!? My cousin had the croissant sandwich. She said the egg and bacon was good but the croissant was -inexplicably-cold and it didn't taste that fresh... Also, the mimosas weren't mixed. All champagne on the top, all OJ on the bottom and 12 ice cubes in a tiny white wine glass. WHO PUTS ICE IN A MIMOSA?!? My second was straight champagne because...no. The bad: Nothing was "bad" but I can't say I'll be back. There are far better options in DC and eastern market. read more

Adding insult to injury, the restaurant no longer provides napkins or silverware except on request. Seriously?!?! WTF?!?! The service was just awful and our server deserved to be fired. Mr. Henry's is a DC establishment! It has so much history, and continues to offer awesome events. You can feel and see all the history when you sit inside as it continues to have a 60s feel (which is when it was founded). Their outdoor seating is great for people (and dog) watching, but there can often be a lot of mosquitos. I was also happy to see that they have recently taken over the adjoining parking lot to offer more outdoor seating. Additionally, they have great daily specials, and service is delightful! They offer all the food classics - nothing too special but always good! My favorites are the pesto burger and grilled chicken sandwich. As for drinks, I like their peach bellini best! If you're looking for a place with fun vibes, good food, and somewhere you can feel good about supporting, this is your spot! read more
